The moon was high in the night sky when Dabi heard footsteps on the roof behind him. He didn't need to turn his head to know who it was.

"Hey, hot stuff."

A whistling of feathers and Haws was sitting beside him, feet tangling over the edge.

He remained silent and avoided the golden eyes which burnt like the sun on his skin. Tonight was not a good night to talk, for both of them probably. Dabi sighed. Hawks didn't care.

"You were right. They know."

Of course he was fucking right. And now they were standing on the wrong side of the equation.

"It was only a matter of time until they found out." He deadpanned. He still couldn't look Hawks in the eyes. This meant their little undercover mission will be blown in a couple of days at best.

"How long have you been sitting here?" Hawks gaze wandered over the skyline of Tokyo, eyes sparkling in the moonlight.

"Couple of hours maybe."

"Have you been waiting?" He felt the golden eyes graze his skin again. The wind picked up, rustling feathers.

"Took you long enough…"

Hawks huffed out a laugh.

They remained silent for what felt like hours, both of them avoiding the topic until Dabi broke the silence.

"What will you do now?"

"I don't know. They gave me the order to kill."

Dabi looked up at that. Hawks eyes were still glued to the horizon, but his hands were clasped in his lap.

"Betrayal from the inside. Nice strategy…" he hummed in appreciation. The Commission was ruthless, not caring about the how of their mission, only focused on the results. Maybe that's why their little charade had been working so well.

"Not just me. They've been planning a whole operation on the PLF. Nearly all available heroes have been commanded to Jaku. They'll blow this up like a party cracker."

Dabi smirked, and the skin on his jaw pulled at the staples.

"And you'll be on the front line. I have to be careful then." This was a desperate attempt to lighten the mood, and it failed miserably. Hawks said nothing.

"Hey, Birdy. Look at me." Hawks face turned and Dabi shuddered at the resignation in those golden eyes. "I'll be fine. And when this is all over, the commission will leave you alone."

"No, they won't."

No, he knew that they would not hesitate to put Hawks on a suicide mission. Again.

Dabi's fingers brushed against Hawk's leg. "No, I know."

"I just… I don't know if I can do it this time."

This time. The way Hawks spoke so casually about the multiple horrible things he had to do for the commission made Dabi's blood boil. He had to bite his tongue to keep his flames from making an entrance. It was one thing to decide on a career path as a hero, or a villain. But to be given no choice in the matter…

"Dabs, you're burning up." He hadn't noticed that Hawks fingers had found his hand, but now he felt the cool skin against his. Dabi took a deep breath and tried to cool his temper.

"What do they want you to do? In detail," he added, because Hawks was obviously trying to gloss over some stuff here.

"I don't know if-"

"Keigo!"

The mention of his first name made him flinch, and Dabi felt instant regret. He gripped the cold hand in his tighter. "Please… You don't need to do this alone."

The tension in Keigo's shoulder eased a little and Dabi started rubbing small circles into his hand.

"They ordered me to kill Twice…" The confession made Dabi shudder, but the tone of voice made It clear that this was not all there was to it.

"And…?"

Hawsk turned, his eyes suddenly lacking all spark, despite the moonlight reflected in them.

"And you. All of you, if I can get my feathers on you, anyway. But they were very specific about you two."

Dabi felt the heat rise again, but smirked despite of it. "And they think you'll do it?"

They had danced around each other for months now, without either of their sides even noticing. "Just tell them you failed, like you do every time. I can take care of myself, and maybe I'll even burn the tips of your wings a little, to make it more convincing."

He smiled sheepishly, but Hawks did not react. At all.

"No, Toya. That won't work this time." The first name use made him pause as well.

"Why? Because there are others? We can easily find a secluded area in the heat of battle, pun intended."

Hawks shook his head. "I'll be wired."

It was silent for a few seconds, as Dabi had to process what he just heard.

"…what?"

"They'll give me a bug, goddammit!" Hawks took a deep breath. "They have been for the last few missions. To make sure I stay on track. Or for security purposes, I don't know."

"They don't trust you." Dabi stated matter of factly, and Hawks smiled sadly.

"Would you?"

Dabi just stared at him and gripped his hand tighter.

Hawks cleared his throat. "So, yes. I will be wearing a bug. They can hear everything I say and everything that is spoken around me and on intercom. So no use to try and trick a way out of that."

"I'm a convincing actor." Dabi replied with the smoothest voice he could muster. He even bowed a little.

"Can you fake your own death?" It took a second for Hawks to realize the stupidity of the question. "Who am I even asking." But the smile that followed didn't reach his eyes.

"But that won't work in the long run. The league will not let me vanish off the face of the earth just because you need to have a body. I need to make a comeback sooner or later… And then they got you good."

Hawks nodded. No matter how he looked at it, there was no way to get out of it with both of them unharmed. Therefore…

"They won't let me go until you guys are eliminated. Unless…" He looked Dabi straight in the eye. He did not like that look. At all.

"You need to put me out."

"What?"

"You heard me the first time."

"No, Keigo. I can't-"

"Me neither! But it has to be you or me!" Hawks voice was raspy and Dabi could swear there were tear marks on his cheeks.

"They won't let me go until I am no longer useful to them."

They way Hawks said useful made Dabis stomach turn. It reminded him too much of his own past, the way his father made him a tool just to abandon him when he was no longer serving his purpose.

"Keigo… You can't ask me to do this."

Suddenly, there was a hand on Dabi's cheek, and he felt the brush of Keigo's thumb over the part of his face that could still feel.

"Don't take just the tips." He murmured before his hand dropped away again and he got up.

Without a word, Hawk's wings flapped, and he took off the building. Dabi just sat there. He could still feel the brush of his fingers like feathers on his skin.
