This story is a prompt given by Tulie4EVER.

In 1837 Hans Christian Anderson published The Little Mermaid. The story inspired the Walt Disney studios to bring it to life on the big screen where it was released in 1989 by the same name. The characters were given names and distinct appearances that are protected under copyright. Which means that while Disney got paid for their piece of fanfiction, I don't.

Chapter One

Saleen was bored.

At least a century had passed since the Elemental had a worthy adversary. Saleen's last rival, Aladdin, had the nerve to grow old and die. Without her permission or leaving behind a worthy opponent. Saleen was sure Aladdin and that princess of his had little minnows, but they had never paid her a visit. They probably were so scared of her they decided to hide away in that pitiful desert, which was hardly a consolation.

Nowadays, there weren't that many adventurers to be found. Sailing ships stuck to the same routes, too concerned with speed and making good time. But sinking ships were so last century anyway. Besides, the vessels now had things called "lifeboats" the humans would jump into instead of choosing to do the decent thing and drown. Those boats were much smaller and not as fun to sink. But it did make Saleen laugh when she pushed the water through the slits in the wood, causing the sailors to panic as they frantically tried to stop the leaks. The snippets she did hear from fish that got away from fishing nets claimed that humans thought the merfolk and other sea creatures were nothing more than a myth.

The daughter of the water was growing barnacles waiting for the next fun thing to happen. So Saleen started to swim away from the water she had called home. She swam north, where the water grew cold, and blocks of ice floated on top. There were no humans who lived on the snowy caps. The only inhabitants were animals with white fur and claws, or chubby things with tusks. Neither of which had the skill to be a proper hair stylist like Armand.

Thinking of her faithful servant was the closest Saleen felt of sadness. He had served her well; and her power had kept him alive longer than normal for creatures of his kind. But eventually, he fell into the sleep no one awoke from.

Saleen felt tired herself. Tired of swimming. Tired of boredom. And the siren of the sea allowed herself to sink into the dark abyss. A place she had never explored before. It would have been interesting, if it weren't so dark. Down, down, down she sank until her body rested on ice. The Elemental opened her eyes and stared into a frozen gaze.

Then the eyes blinked.

Her interest igniting again, Saleen backed up and saw a figure trapped inside the ice block. It was a sea creature, but where Saleen had a tail, this had tentacles. And while Saleen was a creature of beauty, this was older, the skin was greener, and the hair unkempt.

"My, my. What do I have here?"

Saleen felt herself smile for the first time in ages.

Finally! Someone to play with.
