GerSlov: Allergy
Ludwig opened the door to a grinning Samuel. Ludwig smiled, before he stepped aside to let Samuel inside.
"Thank you for coming," Ludwig said. "So… I have coffee and cakes, and then we can go to the cinema later?"
"That sounds great," Samuel said, before he hugged Ludwig.
A bark caught their attention, and soon, three balls of fluff ran in their direction. Samuel dropped to his haunches as Ludwig's three dogs came to greet him.
"Hey there Aster," Samuel said. "How are you doing, Berlitz? And what's…" He paused, his eyes widening. "What happened to Blackie? Did the dogs get in a fight?"
"No, nothing like that," Ludwig sighed, looking at the wound above his dog's eye. "Blackie has been scratching a lot. I think he scratched himself too harshly. I've given him some flea treatments, but nothing's working."
Samuel started stroking Blackie's head, being mindful of the injured eye, before he frowned.
"I can feel something," Samuel said. "Do you think he might have a rash?"
"A rash?" Ludwig repeated.
"Yeah. I mean, if humans have allergies, why wouldn't dogs have allergies too?"
Ludwig frowned, crossing his arms. He had never thought of that.
"I'll get him some ointment then," Ludwig said. "But what could he be allergic to? I didn't change anything."
"I have a cousin who enjoyed drinking milk every day," Samuel said. "And then he started to get sick. Turns out, he developed a milk allergy. It's possible that something that didn't bother him before is bothering him now."
Blackie leaned into Samuel's hand, which had started scratching. Ludwig watched for a while before he nodded.
"So then, shall we get some cake and coffee?" Ludwig asked.
…
They returned from the cinema. Samuel had gone to a pharmacy and got some anti-itch cream for pets. He crouched down next to Blackie and started to massage the ointment into his head.
"I think he's enjoying this," Samuel said as the dog leaned into the contact, helpfully tilting his head as Samuel started rubbing the sides.
"I expected him to put up more resistance," Ludwig said. "I remember the time he pulled a muscle. Getting him to stand still to rub in the ointment was a real chore."
"I think that just hurt him. This… I think this is soothing to him."
Ludwig watched the two and smiled. He was glad that he found someone that cared about his dogs. He didn't want another relationship where his partner hated his family.
Our dog is constantly scratching, and we started to feel small bumps on his head. So, we figured it was an allergic reaction. We got some anti-itch cream, and he's scratching a lot less. And he really enjoys it when we rub it in. Our old dog had to be cornered whenever we wanted to rub some ointment on him. Have you ever tried to corner a claustrophobic boxer? And yes, the dog had claustrophobia.
