When Twice was out of the way, Dabi turned around and directed his flames towards the ceiling. Hawks had dodged his first attack, and this one hit a little closer. However, the majority of the flames burst out of the door and missed Twices body by mere inches.
An awful stench mingled with the smoke as the tips of Hawks feathers caught flame. He threw himself towards the door and stumbled outside, desperately trying to douse the flames.
Dabi followed him slowly, his face a mask of disinterest. His left hand trembled lightly, but he told himself that it was just from the strain of using his flames. His body was not catching up fast enough.
Whoever was on the other side of the intercom just got first class seats to an auditory barbeque.
"I can't believe you killed him!" he roared, making sure it was loud enough to be carried over the intercom.
Hawks was rolling on the floor, trying snuff the fire out. Black soot smeared his face. Dabis jaw clenched. He had to do more than that. In a swift motion, he raised his boot and let it come down on Hawks body. He gasped in pain and instinctively raised his arms to protect his face. Dabi let the blue flames roar around his legs. He could feel the heat rising as he tried to control his emotions.
"Is that the face of someone who has just lost his friend?" That question got him off guard. His face froze in the grin he had fabricated. No, it was not. It was the face of someone who had to do the unspeakable in the name of justice. Or what was left of it anyway.
"My tear glands were burned do I can't cry." His left hand trembled, fingers twitching. He gave a speech about the importance of Twice to the cause of the League, something for them to hear and take notes of as valuable information gained in spite of the loss they were about to receive.
"I'm sad, I'm really sad."
It was true. He couldn't cry, even though he wanted to scream and kick and throw obscenities to everyone whose decisions led up to this point. But his face stayed frozen in the manic grin. Hawks breathing was labored and he winced as his boot pressed down harder.
"Th-the league… I looked up your information, but I could find nothing on you or Shigaraki."
Another crumb for the bastards of the commission. Did Hawks want them to believe that he was incompetent? Or did he want to protect their little charade game?
No, they know that Dabi knows his real name. He himself had blown that cover in a stupid heat-of-the-moment decision. So this was an attempt to save his own ass, so they wouldn't suspect a connection to him. Smart bird.
He looked down at Hawks, his face contorted in pain, and they both new what would follow now. The other man winced again, flames licking at his flightsuit and the skin on his bare arms.
"Who… the hell… are you!?" he spat out, legs trembling under the pressure of Dabis boot and the heat of his flames.
Dabi felt the heat rising on his skin, the smell of burnt flesh in his nose as a small trail of smoke came out of the corner of his mouth.
Their eyes met, and the next words were not meant for anyone else's ears.
"I'm sorry…" he mouthed, not daring to utter a single sound because he didn't know how sensitive Hawks wiring was.
Hawks eyes grew wide, his breathing becoming erratic. He knew what was coming. "I love you…"
Dabi pressed down his boot harder and blue flames erupted around him, engulfing them both in a chaos of heat and burnt feathers. Hawks screamed in agony as the flames burned away at his wings, turning the beautiful red feathers into ash, before eating away at the flesh and bone underneath.
The sound burned itself in Dabi's brain, along with the flames licking at his neck and arms. He couldn't feel it. He couldn't feel anything anymore. His fingers trembled. His heart was racing, but his ears strangely didn't pick up any other sound. It was utterly silent, just the screams echoing in his ears.
