Author's Note: I don't own Naruto.

Hiya! I'm back with a third chapter as promised, although I might just have been a tad late. Had to go back to manga to check/confirm something.

Also, thank you for the encouragement and reviews dear readers. I love them.

Edit: OMG! Have you guys read the new Minato one shot? I love it! It wonderfully displays the love Minato and Kushina have and the parallels to Sasuke and Sakura, I almost cried. It is beautiful. Please read it if you have not already. It has been translated as well.

.

I have tried to be as canon-compliant (both manga and anime, and the lite-novels) as much as possible, and left the time stamps of the events in this fic vague, because I couldn't find an official timeline. Feel free to assume on your own if these events happened within few weeks, or within a few months.

Here is the next chapter. I hope you like this too. Enjoy Chapter 3 of 8.

Chapter summary: Sasuke has to make hard decisions, amidst his own healing. Can he see hope?

Chapter - 3 - How To Move On

Sasuke fell face first into the dirt beneath him. As two of Sai's ink demons held him down, he could hear Naruto counting to three in the distance, his ears still ringing from the fall. Sweat trickled in beads through his thick black hair and began to drip onto the soil below, darkening small circles as he tried to catch his breath. Finally, after what seemed like ages, Naruto reached three, and Sai let go of Sasuke again, garnering another victory on day two. Winning fights with only one hand seemed to be not so easy after all.

The Uchiha dusted himself off and solemnly walked towards the shade once more as Naruto readied to take his place in the next spar. However, sudden movement caught his eye and he looked up to find Kakashi walking hurriedly towards the field. As he turned to witness whatever it was that had caused Kakashi of all to hurry, Sasuke found a gray hawk with a reddish tail fly steeply towards in the direction of the masked ninja, who swiftly held his forearm out. Kakashi soon took out a rolled piece of paper tied to its foot, receiving the message that it carried. The hawk, having delivered its cargo, flew away the way it came from.

Sasuke observed as Kakashi glanced at the contents of the note scrupulously. Although nothing specific shifted in his expressions, Sasuke seemed to understand nonetheless that something had changed, because his sensei immediately turned towards the raven haired boy and promptly instructed him to follow him.

"Come with me, Sasuke, now", Kakashi said with the slightest hint of hurry in his tone. The abrupt manner of his call alerted Sasuke that somehow, the note meant more with regard to the lone Uchiha than to the silver haired ninja himself. Which could only mean that something must have changed for him.

Sasuke immediately realized what the nature of the matter was in an instant and complied immediately. Knowing what he knew, the urgency in Kakashi's voice made sense. But for those that didn't know, they would be left with more questions than before.

As if on cue, Naruto promptly interrupted the duo.

"Kaka-sensei, where are you taking him?", he asked with his confusion evident in his tone.

Kakashi kept walking, but glanced at Naruto anyway, waving his worry off. "It's alright Naruto. Nothing to worry about."

But the questions were not over yet.

"You have received a hawk", began Sai with an emotionless voice, "and now you are rushing him, something is not right", he concluded. Sasuke rolled his eyes. Observation of this level did not require any skills whatsoever. But what was more daunting was that the reason behind their actions would be nearly impossible for the trio to figure out on their own, if Kakashi and Sasuke were to walk away right now without settling their concerns that is. And for a second, Sasuke wondered if this was how he wanted to be, leaving people in the dark.

The raven haired boy stopped in silence, and looked up at Kakashi. He wanted to do something different.

"What is wrong, Sasuke-kun?" Sakura's voice urged as she took a step towards him. It seemed she had found her voice as well.

Kakashi's eyes bore into Sasuke, and the message was clear. They have got a whiff of something going on, it's up to you.

That was true. It was clear that everyone knew something was going on. While Sai kept a neutral hold over his expressions, Naruto's brow however wrinkled in curiosity, and Sakura's in worry. But then, that was the whole point of the summon itself. Whether to make a certain something public knowledge or not. And he would prefer to know the contents of the message here than in front of the Konoha council.

So Sasuke took a deep breath and gave Kakashi a curt nod. "Tell me here," he said, glancing at the remaining three members momentarily.

The silver haired ninja obliged pleasantly, which made Sasuke wonder if the news was a good one. Or maybe his ex-teacher was just happy that he decided to expand his circle. Probably the latter.

"The council members have given you a choice, Sasuke", he said, clearing all of Sasuke's doubts, but leaving him with more questions. But it seemed as if he would not be allowed to ponder over them until some time. Because Naruto, he seemed to have clearly gotten the wrong idea.

"The Council!?" the blond asked in surprise. "What is going on!? Are they asking him to leave?", he extended his worry. But quickly his lone hand clenched into a fist and he growled head on away from the field. "If that's the case then I'll knock some-"

Aaargh! Sasuke yanked him back that very instant, interrupting his blue eyed friend immediately. "Calm down, you idiot. It's not that," he said impatiently. If he was really going to tell his teammates the entire story, this would not be the time for Naruto's antics.

"What is it then?" Sakura asked, confusion flashing in here emerald eyes.

Sasuke Uchiha was never the one to sugarcoat things. He might have avoided answering people's questions, her questions at times, but that was almost always because giving an answer would serve no purpose. Or because he could not afford to let his mind linger around the answer at all. Reaching an answer required either too much active thinking, or felt like reaching it would cost him his drive. Avoiding it always worked. But now, things had slowly started to change for him now. And this was not one of those times he resorted to avoiding. Sasuke wanted to answer. More like, he needed to answer this question because he actually wanted to be closer to the right answer. Huh, how time had changed him already.

"It is about the Uchiha massacre", he said bluntly, not looking at anything or anyone in particular.

Sakura hitched a breath. The mention of the Uchiha massacre has the potential to do that. Also, the fact that Sasuke himself had never picked up this topic back when they were assigned on the same genin team might have had something to do with the topic becoming a taboo.

"Sasuke-kun," she began with hesitation. "You- You don't have to share this with us if you don't want to", she exhaled. How very like Sakura, to make sure he was comfortable. "Do whatever you-".

"Sakura," he said as he glanced at the pink-haired kunoichi, interrupting her words as well. He knew where they led.

She silenced at once as his gaze met her eyes, her discomfort evident on her face. But it would not bode well. This unwillingness to have uncomfortable conversations had been the root cause of most blunders that happened. Something Sasuke understood while he was in captivity. So he decided not to sit on it anymore.

"It is the truth of it", he told her.

"Be clear, will ya!" Naruto screeched, waving his stub at the Uchiha, clearly not in the mood for any indirect speech.

Sasuke rolled his eyes at Naruto once more. Taking a few steps back, he leaned on the tree and took a deep breath as everyone gathered around him. Well, here it goes.

"After Itachi's death, I found out a few things from Tobi", he began. "My brother was not some psycho who killed his entire clan for power. He did it because Danzo Shimura ordered him to." Sakura's eyes widened in shock which did not come as a surprise to Sasuke. But Naruto's eyes widened in recognition at this. There will be another time to ask Naruto some questions, Sasuke thought. Finally, while Kakashi's neutral expression was expected too, given he was among Sasuke's interrogators, Sai was an unexpected factor.

"Is that how he got the sharingan?", the pale boy asked Sasuke with an appalled tone.

Sasuke was surprised at this, how much did Sai know, but did not hang around it too much. "Not exactly", he replied in response and continued.

"He did that because the Uchiha were planning a coup on Konoha. Konoha was going to go on the offensive, but the resulting battle would have caused a lot of destruction. Danzo ordered Itachi to assassinate the clan, and in exchange told him that he could leave me unharmed", Sasuke finished, and something clicked on Naruto's face.

As if on cue, Kakashi took over from there. "Tsunade-sama established a council meeting after Sasuke's interrogation, and everything was revealed there. Justice needs to be done," he put, easier said than done. But leave it to Naruto to misunderstand this with his half-asleep brain.

"But Sasuke is not responsible for it", Naruto argued. "How can they want to punish him for what his clan was plannin-" he tried continuing, but Sasuke directly smacked him on the head this time. Sakura jolted back at that action, and Kakashi shook his head sick of them both.

"Could you. Shut up. And listen?", he asked the blonde rhetorically. Naruto was as slow as he possibly could be and the Uchiha was tired of him jumping to conclusions. "How are you going to make Chunin, with that small a brain?", Sasuke scoffed into thin air as he looked away shaking his head in disbelief.

Naruto took mild offense to that and grunted something about requiring a lot of patience. Kakashi however became seemingly tired of their spat and continued with the information.

"The information about that coup, and the way it was handled has never been made public. But needless to say, many innocent lives of the Uchiha, who were irrevocably Konoha citizens, were that night. Since Sasuke's actions towards this village with respect to the war were good intentions, and the fact that Itachi's loyalty was always to the village, it led them to rethink their decision of hiding that information. So they want Sasuke to choose on behalf of the Uchiha, as he is the only descendent alive, as to what they would want", Kakashi finished and Sasuke nodded in acknowledgement.

The trio were too stunned to speak. Although the issue at hand was put forth mildly, but this summary was enough for now. Then, Naruto broke the silence.

"Ooh. Wow, that's… a lot to suddenly know, you know", he said carefully. "What are you going to do Sasuke?" he asked, amplifying the voices in Sasuke's head that asked him the very same question.

"Would revealing about the coup not be more damaging in times of peace?" asked Sai, as if he could read the very first questions that formed in Sasuke's mind.

Kakashi however, took care of the latter's question. "Yes, Sai. If the matter is made public, then everyone will know about the coup and the Uchiha name will be dragged through the mud. But if the matter is not made public, then it would be injustice to the innocent lives lost. Many of them were children who had nothing to do with the coup."

Sasuke had almost forgotten that it was not just him that would ask and speak bluntly. And Naruto seemed to understand quickly enough this time. "Man, that seems to be a hard decision", he said, looking at Kakashi.

"Leaders have to make difficult decisions, Naruto. You would have to do that too, when you become Hokage", replied the mentor warmly.

Sakura joined in. "Whatever you choose Sasuke-kun, we will stand by you", she nodded in assurance. But wouldn't Sasuke have to choose first?

"It is not that simple", said the lone Uchiha. At Kakashi's nod, he extended. "The reason behind the coup was the mistrust of the Uchiha. This stems from the Curse of Hatred ever since our ancestor Indra Otsutsuki was manipulated by the Black Zetsu. Both The Leaf, and my clan thought they were doing the right thing for their people. And exposing Danzo's schemes will not change anything about it now. Stigmatization of the Uchiha did not begin with that man."

And man did it require a lot of self control from Sasuke to say this out aloud. He could feel his sharingan wanting to whirr into existence and set the world aflame. The realization and the reminder of being The Last Uchiha was earth-shatteringly painful and did not seem to lessen with time. Yet there was nothing that would take it away either. Closest to he felt at peace with it was when he was bleeding out in the Final Valley, but he had chosen to walk out of there and allow someone to be there for him.

Sasuke's thoughts were interrupted by the silver haired ninja. "That is a good observation, Sasuke", he acknowledged. Yet, his eyebrow stayed raised and grey eyes kept boring into him even after these words. Maybe Sasuke was not that hard to read for Kakashi.

"Then you will not reveal the truth of the Uchiha massacre?", Sai asked straightforwardly.

No, Sasuke thought. But that would be because Danzo was just a vile symptom of the widespread public problem the Uchiha Curse of Hatred had become.

But before he could explain, Sakura spoke up. "No Sai", she began, and looked at Sasuke before continuing. "I think Sasuke-kun is trying to say that he needs to find a third option."

Sasuke's eyebrows rose momentarily, surprised at this. It was as if Sakura had read his mind. But then, why was he surprised at all. He always knew Sakura was intelligent. It was just the other two who needed explaining in more detail as to why revealing (or not revealing) the truth about Danzo's involvement was futile. Thankfully, the remaining possessed exceptional analytical skills already.

The raven haired boy nodded at Sakura in agreement. "I need to find a way to end the curse of hatred my bloodline has", he said. "Otherwise the stigma would continue cyclically and revealing or not revealing this would be useless and will not have long term consequences.

"But, what is your answer to the council members then?" Naruto wondered out loud.

Sasuke heaved a deep breath once again. Finding a solution to the curse of hatred was a long shot. But this opportunity that Konoha's council had given was certainly short-lived. And he would not be able to find a solution before that. The only thing he could do is to present this string of thoughts before them, which would inadvertently lead them to decide how justice would be served to the innocent Uchiha massacred on the unfateful day. Finally, Sasuke responded to all of those whose eyes were on him.

"The only thing I can do right now is to tell them the same thing that I told you," he said as he turned to face Kakashi.

Kakashi however seemed to be in deeper thought. The silver haired ninja was also a member of the council, soon going to succeed as the Sixth Hokage, as news went, and maybe Kakashi was considering how this response might go over them. Sasuke patiently waited for him to come out of his trance and lead him to the Council, or better, offer a neat trick to prolong the case.

Soon, Kakashi looked up at Sasuke and gave a quick squeeze on his shoulder. "Come Sasuke," he began, "I actually happen to think that they might give you more time to think, if you put it this way," he said, taking him by the hand and leading him away from the field.

The remaining members of Team 7 stood behind to train, watching the duo go nonetheless as they captured the trace remnants of Kakashi's words. "…And about the solution to the curse - - - have you considered - - - you can also try to…" his voice trailed off as the distance increased.

Finally, Sakura broke the silence that was left among this unwilling trio. "I would never have imagined the village would do something like that. But imagine. All of that happening because of..." she swallowed. "To know that not just you, but your entire family and bloodline was manipulated and misguided since they came to be, and the world might be different towards you if not for that, that must take a big toll on someone."

"It is going to be challenging", Sai joined, not taking his eye away from what had become the silhouette of the two that just left.

But Naruto, he was sure about one thing. "He has us this time."

Sasuke walked the streets of Konoha with Nara Shikamaru, deep in conversation. The sun would soon begin to set but their conversation seemed to be getting somewhere. This morning when Kakashi took him to meet the council members once again, Sasuke took Kakashi's advice and told them what he told team 7 and simply did not know what to expect. But somehow, the council agreed to prolong the hearing for this particular incident and Sasuke got more time.

The only thing that occupied his mind that whole afternoon was that the curse of the Uchiha bloodline needs to end. And he would need to think deeper and find the problem that occluded anyone finding a proper solution. And then, something Kakashi said on the way came to his mind, developing into a train of thought. The fact that Black Zetsu was sealed along with Kaguya.

Sasuke sat with the thought all afternoon in silence. According to the creature itself, Black Zetsu was manipulating the Uchiha clan in hopes that someone would unlock the Rinnegan and unseal its mother. This manipulation was what caused the early Uchiha's to act out and their successors to note the enormous power they could possess and protect their loved ones with. Given the many cycles of reincarnation that happened, it seemed as if this insanity came and went with its manipulation, and each time as generations moved further, the horror was forgotten. Madara Uchiha was no different, but the compounding effects he had on the Ninja Villages was too recent to be erased from the minds of the many. Coming to the actions of Sasuke himself, his deeds were only forgiven, not forgotten by Konoha, let alone by the other Ninja Villages that did not even consider the former idea yet.

The curse of hatred would end with him anyway, Sasuke was sure. And the fact that there was no Black Zetsu anymore to manipulate the events, that would take care of any future generations of Uchiha, if there are any after him that is. But another part of this Curse was rooted in the memories of the masses. None of the general public knew the truth about the Zetsu or Kaguya, and the influence they had on their world and most of the Shinobi World wars. But everyone remembered the after-effects of the manipulation This was what needed to be corrected. Not that they had to reveal the truth about Kaguya and Infinite Tsukuyomi to the public, but the fact that their misplaced hate and fear was the second leg of the Curse of Hatred and its recycling. Ofcourse, a few centuries of silence would also take care of it, but that would not be a true solution that provides justice to the innocent Uchiha. So, Sasuke realized that this was the only way to approach this problem.

One of Kakashi's advice from this morning was to speak with a few of the council members and explain his point of view. But now that Sasuke seemed to have figured out the key to approaching it, he could do better. He could do more than just convince council members to be on his side. And hence, Sasuke realized he needed to speak with Shikamaru Nara. The representative of the Nara Clan in the Konoha Council, someone who the Uchiha knew would objectively approach the issue presented to him. So he approached Shikamaru in the evening, as soon as the busy teen could give him time. And finally, the solution was beginning to gain some structure.

The duo discussed all of the issues at hand and potential strategies that could counter them as they came to a halt in front of Ichiraku Ramen. The boy with the spiky ponytail gave a curt nod in agreement with Sasuke's idea.

"Yeah, yeah, I see your point", he said scratching his neck, deep in thought. "I'm sure this can be put into action. And I think I may be able to persuade the council. A memorial stone perhaps?" He approached the Uchiha.

Sasuke shrugged. "Or a book."

Shikamaru gave a light pat on the back of the ex-missing nin as silence took over momentarily. "Welcome back, Sasuke", he said, peering into his soul, but not necessarily trying to get a read on him.

Sasuke was taken by surprise at this and looked at Shikamaru. Kohona 11 is waiting for you, Naruto's words were ringing in his ears. Maybe it was not too bad holding on to a little hope. The porcupine haired boy continued, "Give the village some time. It's good to have you here again. Naruto seems very happy," he said.

Sasuke loosened up a little at the mention of Naruto. For a while there he thought Shikamaru might slip into making small talk and Sasuke was not sure if he was ready for that yet. Hell, he didn't know if he would ever be ready to have small talk with anyone. But about Naruto, sure, he could talk about his friend for a while.

"He is", Sasuke replied calmly.

"You know he used to sit here everyday and yap on about how he will bring you back whatever it took. Isn't that right master Teuchi?" He called at the owner of Ichiraku Ramen, who was standing in the back readying one of his soups. "Look at how quickly these times change", Shikamaru fell into a murmur.

Master Teuchi was more than excited to join in the conversation at the mention of Naruto. "Oh yes, yes. Always, always" he began in amusement, "To be honest it was a sad sight to watch. He sat here alone, always looking lost when he talked about you. Like a member of his family had gone missing". Teuchi shook his head in disbelief and grabbed one of the bowls and a wiping cloth. "Now he grins all the time, it's a relief." he chuckled.

But something else caught Sasuke's eye in the conversation.

"Alone?" he asked.

Sasuke was being pursued by ninja's of almost every village at one point. And he was well aware that Sakura, and Kakashi were always with Naruto in trying to bring him back to the village. But that didn't explain why Naruto sat alone at Ichiraku's. Were Kakashi and Sakura not with him in his quest?

Teuchi answered his question. Although his answer did not do much for the thoughts lingering in his mind after that question was put out. "Yeah. I mean the team gets busy or whatever, I understand that. But you would think someone else would like to sit with him or make conversation. But people stayed away from him like a plague. I mean, I agree the boy was a jinchuriki, but he was only a jinchuriki," Teuchi said in disbelief, stacking the bowls carefully. "You'd think people would see sense quickly."

Shikamaru nodded along. It was the reality. Even in the academy, Naruto was sidelined and avoided by the other kids, just because their parents told them to stay away from him. Even though the village did not know the entire story about Naruto being a Jinchuriki until later, The rumors were around, and people kept away from him. And Sasuke had felt a part of that loneliness when Naruto's Kyuubi chakra had cloaked him during the war, and when they were close to death near the valley of the end. But something about Teuchi's words again captured his focus.

"You did not avoid him", he stated, gaining Shikamaru's attention who looked at him intriguingly.

But Teuchi stilled in his actions momentarily and laughed. "Why would I? I could see that he was just a boy, orphaned by the war like many others. This village lacked sense. But then I suppose the Third Hokage forbidding anyone to talk about the nine-tails attack could be why I didn't find out until later, the gossips that run around in this village, hush..." he said, wiping another one of his bowls. "Doesn't matter to me though."

Shikamaru let out a chuckle. "He is your favorite customer, Master Teuchi, now don't be shy in accepting that. We see you giving him extra pieces of chasu," he smirked.

"Of course he is," the ramen master accepted without hesitation and for a minute, it warmed Sasuke's heart to know that Naruto was loved and appreciated by someone. "The boy is so full of life, he makes everything seem better than it is. I sometimes miss him, when he is away on long missions."

"Busy saving us all, what can you do," chimed Shikamaru.

"Ah yes. Always thinking about the village. And now the village sees it too," Teuchi said nonchalantly, "They love him".

Hm. They do. But would they extend the same courtesy to an ex-criminal who wants to make amends? Would they see him for what he was today and what he could be tomorrow, and not as a mere sum of his mistakes? Would they see him as Sasuke, and not as the last Uchiha? And what if they choose not to? What purpose would his attempts to vindicate the Uchiha clan serve in that case?

And the Uchiha realized he would be walking out with more questions in hand.

.

.

.

Sasuke entered Naruto's apartment in no time after his discussion with Shikamaru came to an end near Ichiraku's, only to note that Naruto was not alone. Another pair of sandals by the door alerted him of a guest visiting his friend. Sasuke quickly glanced into the living room to notice someone sitting in a teachers vest at Naruto's head table and figured out that it was Iruka Umino, whom Naruto was addressing happily. The coincidence surprised Sasuke a little as he recalled the conversation he had with Teuchi just a while ago. Their academy teacher, now sitting with his back towards the door, was another one of those early people who had accepted Naruto without a question.

Naruto, who was instantly alerted by the click of the front door that Sasuke just closed, approached him swiftly.

"Hey! You're back. What is that in your hand", the blonde asked, gesturing at the packet Sasuke held. Teuchi had informed Sasuke that a new flavor of Miso Ramen was available in the instant pack, and asked him to give Naruto a free sample. Naruto seemed to always have an eye out for Ramen.

"Here," Sasuke began. "Teuchi sent it for you to try out. New flavor", he said, handing out the packet.

"Oh wow, thanks," Naruto said, as he grabbed the snack. Immediately he twisted his head to Sasuke again in recognition. "Oh. How was your- discussion- with Shikamaru?" he whispered to the black haired boy, looking over his shoulder to ensure that their sensei was not listening.

"It was fruitful," Sasuke said simply. This should answer him for the time being and not launch into a discussion in front of Iruka. For all intents and purposes, until the Council came to a decision, this would remain hidden.

"Come on in, I was just about to set the table for the three of us," the blonde said as he walked back inside. "Look Iruka-sensei, Sasuke is back", he said excitedly.

The academy teacher greeted him wholeheartedly, Sasuke realized. "Hello Sasuke-kun. How are you doing?" he asked.

Sasuke returned the courtesy. "I'm fine. You?"

"As good as I can be," said Iruka as he scratched his neck. "Only the regular kind of trouble that students give me. Nothing you and Naruto did not," he shrugged letting out a laugh.

Sasuke hummed in response and sat down. He looked around to find Naruto in the kitchen where he was taking out the bowls and Chopsticks for the trio. Something about today's coincidence was occupying a corner of his mind, itching to resolve itself. Just like Teuchi, Iruka had never mistreated Naruto either, when other teachers in the academy were not so honorable. He had also heard one time from somewhere that Iruka put himself in harm's way just to save Naruto from some rogue ninja, back where they were still in the academy. And Sasuke was curious to know what inspired Iruka to do the same. So the Uchiha took Kakashi's advice to open up a little, diving right in.

"I need to ask you a question," he phrased as politely as he could muster.

Iruka's head popped up and Sasuke continued. "You were always fond of Naruto even when other teachers at the academy did not."

The master looked surprised at the sudden question but he answered nevertheless. "Uh. Yeah. What brought this up, Sasuke-Kun?

"Why weren't you scared of him?" Sasuke asked. "I just wanted to know."

Iruka's eyebrows raised in question. "Oh wow. No one has ever asked me this before," he chuckled nervously. "Well, it is simple, really. I saw a part of myself in him." When Sasuke did not respond, Iruka continued. "I was orphaned too, the day nine-tails attacked. Naruto was just as much a victim of it. All he wanted was some love and attention, something I craved for too. So I could relate to him. And hey, at least I could provide it to him, so that's something," Iruka said, scratching his head again.

Somehow, this simple explanation answered all of Sasuke's questions within seconds. Wasn't that how Naruto understood Sasuke's loneliness, because he was alone too? But again, Naruto was willing to accept that love as well, that Iruka provided him with. Sasuke, on the other hand, took a long time to reach a stage of acceptance.

"I wonder what would have happened if you were not there for him," Sasuke said, not expecting any specific response. Though, there was a certain thankfulness in his tone. At least someone could make a difference to one of the orphans of war.

Iruka turned to look at Naruto who was laying the table, and looked back at Sasuke again. "I don't know," he said honestly. "But sometimes having one person is enough."

That was true, Sasuke thought. He would have given everything to simply have his brother back, even if he was just one person who loved him and cared about him. And soon Sasuke would come to realize the impact these words would have upon him.

"Are you guys coming or what?" Naruto hollered from the kitchen, aptly putting an end to the conversation, and Iruka and Sasuke focused on more important things for the time being.
