Today it was time for the gang to get ready for the Jubilife Contest, which was tomorrow. Dawn was trying on her contest outfit, which her mother had given her. She wore a pink dress, with a white collar, a red ribbon around the waist, with three small red ribbons on the collar and red shoes and Dawn also had her hair tied up.

"How do I look?" she asked Brock and Alain.

"You look great, Dawn." Brock commented.

Alain nodded in agreement.

"Coordinators in the Sinnoh region always dress up for Pokémon contests." Dawn smiled as she twirled around and then turned to Johanna, who was on the video phone, "Thank so much, I just love this new dress."

"[I'm thrilled you it and all, dear, but I think you need to take a look in the box I sent you. There should have been a choker in that box.]" Johanna informed, gesturing her neck.

"Choker? I didn't see a choker." Dawn said.

Just then a Glameow turned up holding a black choker, with a red ribbon, on its tail.

"Wow, it's a Glameow!" Dawn gasped.

Alain looked at the Glameow on his Pokédex:

[Glameow, the catty Pokémon. It hides its spiteful tendency of hooking its claws into the nose of its Trainer if it isn't fed.]

Glameow lifted its tail with the choker on it.

"[Hey that's your choker!]" Johanna said.

Dawn gasped and gently took the choker from Glameow's tail.

Just then a girl with spikey red hair turned up; she was Glameow's trainer.

"There you are. I saw your choker on the floor in the dressing room, and I realized it was yours by your dress." The girl said.

"Thank you so much!" Dawn thanked her as she put on the choker. Then she turned to Johanna, "I got the choker now! You don't have to worry about a thing!"

"[When you tell me not to worry is when I worry the most.]" Johanna retorted.

Dawn turned around to thank the girl, but she was already gone.

"[Now Dawn,]" Johanna said, sternly, "[The last thing you need to go is to be absent minded. If you let yourself get distracted so easily, then you will not win any Pokémon contests.]"

"No need to worry mum," Dawn assured her, "I've practiced a lot with my Piplup and Burmy so we will be fine!"

"[It's when you say not to worry that gets me worried.]" Johanna reminded her.

Dawn grunted as she slumped her head down.

"Don't worry. We'll be here to help her out." Brock assured her.

"Hang on, where's Ember?" Dawn asked.

"Right here." Ember replied.

Ember came out of the dressing room wearing a different outfit. It was a white sleeveless dress that stops at the knees and a frilly collar. On top of the white dress was a light purple sleeveless dress split at the waist front with three buttons on both sides. There's a gold lining along the neckline and zipper. A purple and black striped ribbon tied like a bow is sewed on the back. She wore a purple and black striped ribbon tied like a bow around the collar. On her arms she wore white sleeves that start above her elbow and end at her wrist. She also wore long white stockings with purple boots.

"Wow! You look amazing, Ember!" Dawn beamed.

"Thanks, Dawn." Ember smiled.

Alain nodded which made Ember blush.

Johanna turned to Ember. "[Ember, I saw your contest appearances on TV with Dawn, so I look forward to see what contest moves you'll perform here in Sinnoh.]" she said.

"Thanks, Johanna." Ember smiled.

Then the phone call ended.

"Come on Ember, let's do one more minute training!" Dawn announced.

"Wait a moment Dawn," Ember stopped her, "You and I need to register for the contest first."

"Oh no I forgot about that!" Dawn exclaimed, in a panic.

Ember face palmed; she had a feeling that Dawn hadn't registered yet. "It's a good thing that Brock, Alain and I are travelling with you." she said.

The gang went up to the desk, where they had to register, and Ember and Dawn got themselves sorted at once. Once they received their Sinnoh contest passes, they were also presented with ribbon cases, a ball capsule, the rule book and an envelope. Ember got a purple ribbon case and Dawn got a pink one.

Brock opened the envelope and saw some seals in it. "Hey Dawn, what are these seals for?" he asked, "Ember didn't get anything like this in Kanto and Hoenn."

"These seals are to make a super appearance when you release your Pokémon from the Pokéball." Dawn demonstrated it by placing her Piplup's Pokéball in the capsule, next she placed a heart seal on the capsule, and then she threw the ball and lots of hearts appeared when Piplup came out of it.

"Wow that's pretty cool." Ember beamed.

"You're right and there are all sorts of seals that do different things, and you only place one on each capsule." Dawn said.

"I get it." Ember said, excitedly.

After sorting out the registering and getting out of the outfits, Ember and Dawn could now do one more practice for the Pokémon contest. Dawn showed how much practice Piplup had done with his Peck attack; with storing so much energy it could make his beak get bigger while it glowed. Shantae (Aipom) put on a performance by doing Double Team and then Swift. The multiple Shantae's created a giant star in the sky thanks to the Swift attacks.

"Wow Ember, your Aipom is certainly built for Pokémon contests." Dawn complimented.

"I agree she really loves them," Ember agreed, "funny thing is though my other Aipom, Luffy, does like them a bit, but Shantae here really is into them."

"Well Pokémon do have different likings, Ember." Brock reminded Ember.

Ember and Alain were training out in the training grounds near the Pokémon Center. Just then the girl with the Glameow turned up. "You're Ember Ketchum, right?" she asked Ember.

"Yes, and you are?" Ember asked. She already knew that this girl is Zoey, another coordinator.

"I'm Zoey. I've seen you participate in contests on TV," Zoey replied, "but I must ask you. I've heard you participate in contests and gym battles, right?"

"That's right I do." Ember confirmed.

Zoey frowned. "You should make up your mind on which you should really be doing." she advised.

Ember sighed. "There is nothing wrong with people taking part in contests and gyms," she stated, "I've learned that there have been many people who take part in both gyms and contests, and there's no law against that. Besides the one who decides on what I should do is me and me alone."

Zoey didn't take in any of that and left.

"What's her problem?" Alain asked.

"Apparently, Zoey was one of those people who were against those who did both gym battles and Pokémon contests. But Tesla and I will show her what we learnt from our past gym battles." Ember assured him.

Alain smiled, "I'm sure you will." He said.

When Ember and Alain got back to Dawn and Brock, they told them about Zoey. Dawn couldn't believe that Zoey was against those who did both contests and gyms.

"What are you going to do, Ember?" Dawn asked, worriedly.

"I'll be showing her what someone who does gym battles can do in a Pokémon contest." Ember replied.

"Be careful, Ember and don't let what Zoey said get to you." Brock warned.

"I won't." Ember assured him.

Next day it was time for the Jubilife contest to begin. Ember was in her new outfit, and they were in the waiting room with Brock and Alain. Brock and Alain wanted to watch the preliminary rounds in the waiting room.

"Where's Dawn?" Brock asked.

"She's probably sorting that hair of hers out." Alain guessed.

"If she doesn't hurry, she will be late for the preliminary round." Ember pointed out.

By now the contest had begun. The presenter for the Pokémon contests in Sinnoh was a woman named Marian. Marian was a cousin of Vivian and Lillian, which was why she nearly looked like them but without a mole. The judges were Raoul Contesta and Mr. Suziko and Jubilife City's Nurse Joy; just like Hoenn and Kanto. Marian showed off the Jubilife Ribbon; it was aqua blue with white outlines. In the waiting room, Dawn turned up.

"There you are, you're late, Dawn." Ember stated.

"I know, I had trouble with my hair." Dawn admitted.

"Figures." Alain said.

Then the preliminary round started. Zoey was first and she called out a Misdreavus. Her catch phrase for contests was 'curtain' and the seal on Misdreavus's capsule ball was a smoke seal, so Misdreavus appeared in a puff of purple-grey smoke. Misdreavus did Double Team, while still surrounded by the smoke, and created a spooky shadow silhouette in the smoke.

"Wow that brings out the spookiness of Misdreavus since it's a ghost type Pokémon." Ember commented, who was impressed.

"Zoey is good at being a coordinator." Brock agreed.

Then Misdreavus used Confuse ray, which broke the smoke apart and revealed Misdreavus, and then it used shock wave and showed how strong its electric move was. To finish Zoey posed and Misdreavus landed on top of her hand. Dawn didn't take her eyes off for a second.

After Zoey there was a Rapidash, a Beautifly, a Scyther, a Buizel, a Bidoof and a Weepinbell. Then it was Ember's turn.

"Now here's a coordinator who everyone has seen in contests from the Hoenn region and Kanto region," Marian announced, "and she's the winner of the Hoenn and Kanto Grand Festival. Give it up for Ember Ketchum!"

The crowd cheered loudly once Ember got on the stage. She sent out Shantae (female Aipom). She had a star seal on her capsule ball, so Shantae was surrounded in multi-colored stars. Shantae started off with Swift and the stars broke the stars from the seal, creating hundreds of yellow particles. Next, she did Double Team to created multiple copies of herself and used Focus Punch to destroy her copies. To finish, she spun around like she was dancing and balanced on her tail to pose.

"Wow, Ember is good at this," Dawn commented, "no wonder she won at the Hoenn and Kanto Grand Festival."

"Just relax Dawn and have a good time out there." Brock advised.

Next up was Dawn's turn and she sent out Piplup. Her catch phrase was 'spotlight' and her capsule ball had a bubble seal, so Piplup came out with a lot of bubbles. Dawn told Piplup to use Bubble Beam, and Piplup's bubbles pushed the seal's bubbles into the air. The Piplup used Peck, making his beak grow big, to peck all the bubbles very quickly and created white particles after all the bubbles burst. To finish Dawn curtsied and Piplup puffed with pride.

Soon the preliminary round was over, and Dawn collapsed on the floor. She had been nervous all that time.

Ember offered her hand to help her get back up. "Come on Dawn," she said, "it's too soon to be relieved. We still need to get through the battle rounds."

Just then the final results of who will proceed to the battle round came up on the screen. Only eight coordinators could go through to the battle rounds and Zoey, Dawn and Ember were four of them. Then the cards of the coordinators shuffled around, and the result was Ember had to battle Zoey first.

Zoey and Ember turned to each other.

"I'll be showing you the difference between a contest battle and a gym battle." Zoey declared sternly to Ember, and she left.

"Ember?" Dawn said, worriedly.

"Don't worry Dawn," Ember assured her, "I learnt a lot of tricks from gym battles in the past, and Tesla and I will be showing Zoey what we've learnt."

"Raichu." Tesla agreed.

Then Ember and Tesla left for the stage.

Soon it was time for the battle round, and Ember and Zoey took their battle positions. Brock, Alain and Dawn watched from the audience seats. The time for the battle match was five minutes. And instead of having a point losing line like back in the Hoenn and Kanto contests, the board had a point losing circle under the pictures of the coordinators. The Sinnoh contests were different from the Kanto and Hoenn contests.

Ember called out Tesla; since Tesla didn't want to be placed in her Pokéball, she just came out normally without the seal. Zoey sent out her Glameow, which had a part seal and lots of pink confetti came out.

"Let's go, Tesla." Ember said.

Tesla ran over to Glameow to attack, and Zoey told her Glameow to stay still. Ember recognized this because she has seen this before; this meant Glameow was waiting for Tesla to attack so it could move in next.

"Tesla, use Dig!" Tesla dove into the ground.

"Stand your ground, Glameow!" Glameow stood its ground waiting for Tesla.

"Now Tesla!" Tesla jumped out of the ground and shocked Glameow with Thunder Shock.

"Glameow, move in with Fury Swipes!" Zoey called.

"Tesla, let Glameow hit you!" Ember countered.

Tesla stood still, smirking. Glameow scratched Tesla, but then Glameow got shocked with static electricity and became paralyzed.

"This was something I've learned from battling in the past, Zoey." Ember called out.

"Glameow, use Shadow Claw!" Glameow moved in with Shadow Claw.

"Tesla, use Agility to dodge!" Tesla dodged the attack, "Now Volt Tackle!"

Glameow tried to dodge but it was too paralyzed to move. Glameow was really hurt by it. Suddenly time was up, and the board showed that Ember was the winner of the battle round.

Dawn was up next with her Burmy, and Burmy defeated her opponent's Bidoof. Then she defeated a coordinator with a Buizel. Then a coordinator with Weepinbell defeated her opponent's Rhydon. Ember defeated the coordinator with the Weepinbell. Soon enough, Ember and Dawn were set to battle against each other.

Next up it was time for Ember to battle Dawn in the finals.

"Tesla, Center Stage!" Ember called Tesla the normal way.

"Piplup, spotlight!" Dawn called out Piplip; the capsule had a heart seal and Piplup was surrounded by small hearts.

"Piplup, use Peck!" Dawn ordered.

"Tesla, Swift!" Ember countered.

Both attacks clashed against each other, causing the two to lose points.

"Try Water Gun!" A stream of water shot of Piplup and headed towards Tesla.

"Dodge and use Thunder Punch!" Tesla dodged the attack and sparks appeared on Tesla's paw and she punched Piplup who cried out in pain at the attack.

Then the two jumped away from each other.

"Piplup, use Bubble Beam!" Piplup launched a bunch of bubbles from his mouth.

"Tesla, Thunder Wave!" Tesla released a wave of electricity from her which clashed against the bubbles and hit Piplup who grunted at the impact of the attack.

"Piplup, you okay?" Dawn called out.

Before either trainer could call out an attack. Time was up. The result revealed that Ember and Tesla were the winners since she had more points than Dawn.

Ember was the winner of the Jubilife Contest.

Ember was presented with the Jubilife Ribbon.

"I had a feeling you would compete in the contests here in Sinnoh, Ember," Mr. Contesta said, "and I look forward to see more of your skills here too."

Ember smiled and was happy to receive her first Sinnoh ribbon. Just then Zoey stepped forward.

"After seeing how you won this contest with your battling skills," she said, "I realize I was wrong about you, who does gym battles, not knowing the difference with contest battles."

"It's as I said Zoey, I learnt a lot of tactics and tricks in gym battles and other Pokémon battles I've been in, in the past." Ember stated.

"People can learn from contests and battling," Mr. Contesta spoke up, "to get to the top you have learn everything there is about contests and battling especially if you are doing bother contests and gym battles."

Zoey realized her mistake and took out her hand, "Congrads, Ember. Also, I'm sorry about before."

Ember accepted her hand. "I'm glad you understand." she said.

Zoey was now a new rival for both Ember and Dawn in the contests.

After the contest was over Zoey said goodbye to the gang and walked off for her next destination, while the gang planned to continue on for Oreburgh City for Ember's first gym battle.
