Things happened after the gang left Jubilife City. First Ember had Percy (Swellow) train Sora (Starly) and Alain's Starly. In the midst of that, both Starly's evolved into Staravia. Second, Brock's Bonsly evolved into Sudowoodo after it learnt the move Mimic. Last of all, Brock caught a Nuzleaf that became fast friends with Sudowoodo.

Now the gang had made it to Oreburgh City where Ember can earn her first gym badge. Oreburgh City was like a factorial town because it had a big coal mine called Oreburgh Mine, and the big chimneys were to help control the air in the mine and out.

"You ready for this, Ember?" Alain asked.

"I'm ready as I ever will be and so are my Pokémon." Ember answered.

The gang made it to the gym; the outside of the gym was like a huge stone cave.

"This is impressive." Alain commented.

"Hmm from the look of the design of this gym I would think that this gym probably uses Rock Pokémon." Ember observed.

"I think you may be right, Ember." Brock agreed.

Suddenly Paul came out from the building.

"Paul? You defeated the gym leader already?" Ember asked.

"No, the gym leader isn't around at the moment." Paul replied, rudely.

Just then a man with long green hair came out. Ember recognized him as Ian, Roark's assistant.

"Oh hello, are you here for a gym battle too?" Ian asked.

"Yes. I'm Ember Ketchum from Pallet Town." Ember replied.

"I'm Ian, the gym leader's assistant." Ian introduced himself.

"By the way Ian, does the gym leader here use Rock type Pokémon?" Ember asked.

"Yes he does." Ian replied.

"I'll wait at the Pokémon center until the gym leader gets back." Paul said, and he left.

"Oh, here's your badge case. You'll need it to put your gym badges in." Ian said as he gave Ember a lavender-blue colored gym badge case that had a Pokéball design on the lid.

"So where is the gym leader at the moment?" Ember questioned.

"The gym leader is Roark. He's working down at the Oreburgh mine at the moment." Ian explained.

"I heard that it's famous for its coal there." Brock spoke up.

"Not only does Roark dig for coal, but he also digs for treasure." Ian informed.

"How about we go and visit the Oreburgh mines?" Ember suggested.

"Sounds like a good idea." Alain agreed.

"Yeah. We'll meet up with Roark there as well." Brock added.

So the gang decided to visit the Oreburgh Mine to see Roark themselves.

At the Oreburgh Mine it was very busy; lots of miners were digging and there were lots of fighting type Pokémon helping out with carrying the heavy stuff.

"Excuse me sir, is Roark around?" Ember asked the miners.

They were just about to answer but then two miners came out of a mine, pushing a big cart that had a giant stone in it. A man who wore glasses and a hard, red underground hat, also came out of the mine. Ember knew that it was Roark the Oreburgh Gym leader.

"Easy now!" One worker called.

"Don't worry!" The other worker chuckled. They both carefully dragged the cart to its spot.

"Okay! You can leave it right there!" Roark called back.

"Sure thing, Roark!" The worker agreed.

"That must be Roark." Alain confirmed.

The group walked towards Roark, where Roark was smoothing the boulder with his hands.

"Excuse me, Mr. Roark?" Ember asked.

"Hold on a second, please. I'm having a talk with this fossil right here." Roark replied. He closed his eyes and smoothed the surface of the special boulder once again.

"You can talk to fossils?" Dawn asked, amazed.

"I sure can. And right now, it's telling me something... It's all right now... You will come back to life... Someday." Roark replied, soothing the fossil. He stopped and opened his eyes. "Alright now! Take it to the museum now!" He ordered.

The workers agreed as they worked to get the large fossil to the museum.

Roark turned to the gang, "Now, what were you saying?" He asked.

"I'm Ember Ketchum. I'm here for a gym battle here in Oreburgh City." Ember explained.

"That is, someone is ahead of us." Dawn explained.

"Really? I got two challengers already!" Roark laughed.

"So, that fossil... Is it like a hidden treasure to you?" Dawn asked.

"Ian explained to us that you hunt the mine for hidden treasure." Brock explained.

"Treasure, huh? Of course! The truth is that many Pokémon fossil appear here in the coal mine!" Roark explained.

"No way..." Dawn gasped, amazed.

The group headed back to the Oreburgh Gym with Roark as Roark explained the discovery he had just made.

"Welcome back, Roark! How was the treasure hunt?" Ian asked.

"It was amazing! I'm telling you, we finally discovered something!" Roark exclaimed. Just as Roark was finished, Paul came into the entrance.

"Oh! There's Paul! He's your first challenger." Ian explained, pointing to Paul.

"Actually, I would like it if you let Ember go before me." Paul requested.

Roark, Ian and the gang were surprised at Paul's request. But Ember knew the reason behind Paul's request; he wanted to see how skillful Ember is.

"Is that alright with you, Ember?" Roark asked.

"Well, if Paul's okay with it, then I'll allow it." Ember replied.

So, everyone went to the battlefield where Ember's Gym battle was about to take place.

"Awesome! So, this is what a real Gym is like!" Dawn squealed with excitement.

"Many Gyms have different sorts of battlefields. Of course, this Gym is a Rock Type Gym! So, that is why this field is for Rock Types." Brock explained.

Paul and the gang sat down on the seats to watch, and Ember and Roark took their positions on the battlefield. Ian was the referee and explained this battle was a three-on-three Pokémon battle.

"This is so exciting! I can't wait to see how Ember does in a gym battle!" Dawn beamed. She felt a bit excited as this was her first time of watching a Pokémon gym battle.

"Be sure you pay attention to this, Dawn." Brock advised her.

"There will be a lot of things for you to learn from this gym battle, more than you think." Alain added.

"The Oreburgh Gym battle between Ember Ketchum, the challenger, and Roark the Gym Leader is about to get underway! Each side will be able to use three Pokémon! And the battle will be over when one side's three Pokémon are unable to continue! Also, only the challenger is able to make substitutions! So, let the battle begin!" Ian announced.

"Geodude, let's go!" Roark called.

"Geodude!" The Rock Pokémon grunted.

"Oh wow! A Geodude!" Dawn cried happily.

Dawn scanned Geodude:

[Geodude, the Rock Pokémon. Geodude is often found on mountain roads with half of its body buried in the ground so it can observe mountain travelers.]

"Calypso, let's go!" Ember released her Bubble Jet Pokémon.

"Vap!" Calypso the Vaporeon appeared on the field.

"Ember, you may have the honors!" Roark called.

"Thank you, Roark!" Ember called back, "Calypso, Muddy Water!"

Calypso opened her mouth and releases a wave of muddy water from her mouth at Geodude, getting it in its face and preventing it from seeing.

"Geodude!" Roark called out.

"Now Aqua Tail!" Water swirls around Calypso's tail, and she hits Geodude with it, sent it flying across the field.

Geodude grunted as it balanced itself out and tried to wipe the mud from its eyes.

"Geodude, try and use Rock Throw!" Roark called out.

Geodude grabbed a boulder and threw it towards Calypso.

"Dodge and then use Sand Attack!" Calypso dodged the attack and then stood on her hind legs and slammed her front legs on the ground, sending a big cloud of sand at Geodude, blinding the Rock type even more.

"Now Surf!" Calypso summoned a huge wave of water and rode on it. Then the wave hits Geodude. When the water subsided, it showed Geodude with swirls in its eyes.

"Geo~" Geodude groaned.

"Geodude is unable to battle! Calypso wins!" Ian announced.

Calypso jumped into Ember's arms, "Great job, Calypso." Ember smiled as she petted Calypso.

"Vap!" Calypso smiled back.

"Wow, Calypso's one strong Pokémon." Dawn awed at the Bubble Jet Pokémon.

"Ember has had Calypso since she journeyed through the Kanto region." Brock commented.

Paul had to admit that he was somewhat impressed.

Roark returned Geodude, "Thank you my friend, you did well." He takes out another Pokéball, "Alright, Onix! You're up next!"

Onix roared as he appeared on the field.

Ember returned Calypso and took out another Pokéball, "Talos, come on out!"

Talos the Silvally roared as he appeared on the field.

"It's huge!" Dawn squealed with delight, checking it with her Pokédex.

[Onix, the Rock Snake Pokémon. It tunnels through the ground which shakes when it raises its thunderous roar. It can move the ground at fifty miles per hour.]

"But who's the other Pokémon?" Dawn asked as she and Paul scanned Talos.

[No data found]

"'No data found'? What does that mean?" Dawn questioned.

"It means that Talos is an undiscovered Pokémon. He's not registered in the Pokédex because he's not from this region." Alain explained.

Paul was curious about this 'Talos'. It made him wonder how Ember came across this Pokémon. He wondered what this Pokémon is able to do.

Ember takes out a blue disk from her pouch (Similar to Gladion's, but in the shade of purple) which held all of Talos's disks, "Talos, accept this Water Memory within yourself!" She threw the Water Type Disk towards Talos's head, which a mechanical slot opened out, and the disk inserted itself which caused his normal colored eyes, feather-like scales and back fin-like tail to change to a blue color.

This action shocked Roark, Ian, Paul and Dawn.

"What just happened to Talos?!" Dawn gasped.

"I guess you could say that it's Talos's ability." Alain stated.

Paul was very interested in Talos. He wondered what this 'ability' was.

"Talos, use Icy Wind!" Talos blows a beam of icy wind from his mouth at Onix who flinched at the attack. Ice began forming around Onix's body.

"Onix, use Dragon Breath!" Onix fires a yellow beam from its mouth at Talos.

"Talos dodge!" Talos dodged the attack.

"Use Rock Slide, Onix!" Multiple gray rocks appear around Onix. It then sends the stones flying towards Talos.

"Protect!" Talos projected a green colored barrier in front of him, making the rocks bounce off the barrier.

"Onix, use Dig!" Onix dug into the ground.

"Talos, Hydro Pump into the hole!" Ember ordered.

"Onix, get out of there!" Roark called out.

But it was too late, the water went into the hole and Onix was shoved out of the hole. Onix was breathing heavily as it stood out of the hole.

"Onix, Double Edge!" Roark ordered.

"Talos, Iron Head!" Ember countered.

Onix and Talos collided with each other with their attacks. Talos got tackled hard but wasn't beaten yet. As for Onix, it got struck hard by Talos's Iron Head attack and soon fainted.

Onix groaned with swirls in its eyes.

"Onix is unable to battle! Talos wins!" Ian announced.

"Way to go, Talos!" Ember beamed.

Talos looked over his shoulder and smiled at Ember as he growled softly.

"What a Pokémon." Dawn commented, amazed.

"Talos is one of a kind." Alain stated.

Brock nodded, "Indeed."

Paul had to admit that he was impressed with Talos's abilities. He wondered where he can find a Pokémon like Talos.

Roark returned Onix, "I'm very impressed, Ember. You already managed to take down two of my Pokémon. I have to admit that Talos is quite a mystery." He admitted.

"He's unique and very special." Ember said before she returned Talos.

"Indeed. Now I'll introduced you to my last Pokémon! Go Cranidos!" Roark let out his last Pokémon.

"Cran!" Cranidos appeared on the field.

Ember took out her Rotom phone and scanned Cranidos:

[Cranidos, the Head Butt Pokémon. Cranidos lived in the deep woods about one-hundred million years ago, and its cranium is as hard as steel.]

"Triton, let's go!" Ember released her shiny Penguin Pokémon.

"Piplup!" Triton the shiny Piplup appeared on the field.

"A shiny Piplup huh?" Roark muttered, "Cranidos, use Headbutt!"

Cranidos charged towards Triton.

"Dodge and then Rain Dance!" Triton dodged the attack and chirped loudly, summoned some dark grey clouds and made it rain. The rain put Cranidos off a bit.

"Now use Bubble Beam!" Triton launched his attack at Cranidos who grunted at the impact.

"Cranidos, use Zen Headbutt!" The blue part on Cranidos's skull glows blue and becomes surrounded in a light blue reflective shield and then charged towards Triton, but Triton spun out of the way.

"Bubble Beam again!" Triton launched his attack again at Cranidos who got hit.

"Now move in with Steel Wing!" Triton's wings glow white, and he slams them into Cranidos.

Cranidos skidded across the field, and it panted heavily before it collapsed onto the ground.

"Cran~" Cranidos moaned with swirls in its eyes.

"Cranidos is unable to battle! Triton wins! So, the victor is Ember!" Ian announced.

"We did it, Triton!" Ember cheered as Triton rushed towards her and partly tripped. He quickly got up and continued towards her and jumped in her arms, "You were great, Triton."

"Piplup!" Triton chirped happily.

Roark returned Cranidos and walked up to Ember, "Ember, you and your Pokémon gave me an exciting battle. I give you proof of your Oreburgh victory, the Coal Badge." he said, and he handed Ember his Coal Badge.

The Coal Badge was brown with grey outlines, and it was shaped as a boulder and Pokéball combined.

"Thank you, Roark." Ember bowed slightly and gently took the badge from his hand.

"Alright! We got the Coal Badge!" Ember posed with her Pokémon.

"Raichu! (Badge number one!)" Tesla cheered.

Calypso and Triton trilled while Talos grunted happily.
