Chapter 5

"We're finally here in Pewter City." Serena says, and I smile, "Yeah, this is where we have our first gym battle."

Yellow asks, "Um... Ash, didn't Viridian City have a gym? Why didn't you challenge that one?"

I say, "The Viridian Gym leader isn't in the gym, which is actually very strange. But we decide to do that one last."

"But before we go to the gym, how about we check out the Pewter Museum of Science?" Insey asks.

"Sounds good." Misty says. Then we all head into the museum and we manage to look at a lot of fossils. I know that there is a Fossil restoration machine here in Pewter City, but I don't have any fossils since they're located in my Mt. Moon House. Anyway, while we're finished, we find a strange man sitting in front of us with a lot of rock merchandise.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" Yellow asks.

"The name's Flint. These rocks here are Pewter City souvenirs. Do you want to buy some?"

"No thanks. We are going to challenge the Pewter City Gym." I say.

"Don't tell me you're planning on challenging Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader." He says with a laugh, "You think you can beat him?"

"Who knows, my parents did train us a lot about strategies. We shall see." I say as we leave the old man alone.

Once we arrive at the Pewter City Gym, we see that the gym field is a rock garden. A man walks to us and says, "Hiya! Do you want to dream big? Do you dare to dream of becoming the Pokémon champ? I'm no Trainer, but I can advise you on how to win. Let me take you to the top!"

"That will be nice." I reply.

"The Gym Leader here is Brock and he specializes in Rock Type Pokemon. I suggest you have Water or Grass Type Pokemon on your team if you want to beat him."

"That sure is useful." Serena says, "But you don't have any of them, right?"

"I don't need to use Water or Grass Pokemon." I say with confidence. "And you'll see why."

On the way, there are two Gym trainers before reaching Brock. The first one is the Camper named Amara. "This is the Pewter City Gym. Trainers here are a bit different from those you've faced so far."

She sends out a Geodude to battle, and I decide to go with Butterfree, my strategy against this Geodude is simple, I have it fall asleep using Sleep Powder, and then I end it with several Confusion attacks.

"You're quite different from the challenges I've faced! I never thought I would lose to a Bug and Flying Type."

Yellow says, "Wow... he's amazing."

Serena says, "Ash is capable of helping Pokemon learn new moves after all."

The next trainer is a camper named Liam, he says, "Stop right there! You're ten thousand light-years from facing Brock!"

This one is also a Geodude, but I decide to go with the Male Nidoran instead. Nidoran is probably one of the few Pokemon I have that aren't really weak to Rock Type. And with the help of the Poison Point ability and the Double Kick, the second Geodude is also down.

"Oops!" The trainer gasps, and I just ignore him and finally reach Brock.

"Who goes there?" Brock asks, and I say, "You must be Brock, the name is Ash. I challenge you to a gym battle."

"My Pokémon are all hard as a rock and have true-grit determination! That's right! My Pokémon are all Rock types! Fwahaha! You're going to challenge me even knowing that you'll lose? After all, your Pikachu is in a cute stage, it can't win."

"You just need to worry about your Pokemon, just because Pikachu is cute doesn't mean he can't be strong." I say.

"Suit yourself. That's what a Trainer's honor demands! So be it! Show me your best!"

Then he snaps his fingers and the battlefield appears. I say, "My first Pokemon will be Pidgey."

"This will be a two-on-two match. I'll start with Geodude!" After sending out Geodude.

As the match begins, I say, "Pidgey, let's raise your speed with Agility!"

"You have a bad strategy. Don't you know that Flying Type Pokemon are weak against Rock Types?" Brock asks.

"Maybe it seems bad, but there is a reason why I defeated your two Gym trainers with Flying Type Pokemon." I say back.

"Then let's see how you do it. Sandstorm!" Brock says as he has Geodude go for Sandstorm, covering the field with sand.

"Rock Throw!" Brock says, and I quickly have Pidgey dodge the attack and use Quick Attack. It hits Geodude, but Pidgey groans in pain because Geodude has a hard body.

"This isn't over just yet." I say. "Pidgey! Sand Attack!"

Brock gasps as Pidgey kicks the sand and causes the Geodude to be blind. "Shake off the sand and use Smack Down!"

Geodude tries to, but the Sandstorm isn't helping, and the Smack Down misses the target.

"Now use Steel Wing!" Pidgey's wings glow and eventually knock the Geodude, lowering a lot of his health.

At the same time, Misty, Insey, Serena, and Yellow are watching from the second floor, and Insey says, "That sure does a lot of damage!"

"Now Ash needs one more hit and he'll win!" Serena adds. But then they are surprised to see nine more people come to watch the battle, I have to guess they're Brock's siblings.

"Finish it with Twister!" I say, and Pidgey goes for the move and knocks Geodude into the air before the twister disappears, smacking it to the ground faint.

"No way..." Brock gasps in shock before returning Geodude. "It's my fault for underestimating your Pidgey. But it will be no match for Onix!"

Here it is, the second and final Pokemon... Onix... "Use Bind!" Brock goes for the first move, and the bind causes Pidgey to be trapped.

"Oh no! Pidgey! Try to get it off using Gust!"

But seeing that the Onix is binding tighter, Pidgey eventually faints. I frown before returning the Pokemon. "Pidgey return." I recall the Pokemon and turn to Pikachu. "Pikachu, you're up!"

Pikachu nods as he jumps to the field, and Brock seems to be thinking, usually, people will just mock me for sending on an Electric Type Pokemon on the Ground Type. But Brock seems to be thinking.

"Onix, that Pikachu might have some tricks, let's use Rock Polish!"

Raising the speed I see... then I decide to have it go for Iron Tail, dealing some damage.

"Iron Tail is super effective!" Serena cheers.

"Bind again!" I gasp in shock after Pikachu is bound in the same manner as Pidgey, I say, "Iron Tail!"

Pikachu uses its tail to crash into Onix, causing him to break the binding. "If that's the case, use Gyro Ball!"

Seeing that Onix is starting to get close to Pikachu, I decide to let it trip. "Pikachu! Grass Knot!"

After the move, Onix trips and falls to the ground. I say, "Now let's go with Rain dance!"

Pikachu growls and the rain appears, causing Onix to be in pain. "Rock Pokemon are weakened by Water." Misty says. "Pikachu can learn Rain Dance as well?"

"In normal circumstances, a Ground Type Pokemon like Onix won't be affected by Electric Type moves. But with the rain going on, Electric moves will be able to attack Onix! Let's finish it off!"

But just before I can command, I feel that a lot of people are holding me back. Insey yells, "Hey! They can't do that! It's against the rules!"

The ones who are holding me back are Brock's nine siblings, they all shout at me for hurting Onix so badly and they call me a bully.

"Stop it, get off, all of you! This is an official match. And we're going to finish it no matter what!"

"But Brock! We know that you love your Pokemon so much!" "That's why we can't watch Onix suffer from another attack!"

I frown as I say, "Pikachu, return."

After Pikachu runs back to me, Brock asks, "What do you think you're doing? This match isn't over yet!"

"I'll probably come in another time. After all, I think I'm doing a little too much and it is not fair for Gym Leaders who are facing challengers with no badges." I say. "The next time I come, I'll battle without relying on tutoring moves..."

Everyone frowns at me before I put all of Brock's siblings down. Misty asks, "But why? It's not against the rules that he shouldn't use Tutoring moves."

Insey says, "That's my brother for you. Deep down inside, he loves Pokemon and he doesn't like to see them hurt as well."

Serena says, "Ash! Wait for us!"

After leaving the gym, I turn to Pikachu. "Pikachu, even though we didn't win the Gym badge, your training with the Grass Knot and Rain Dance really paid off."

Pikachu says, "Thanks. But I am still unable to let it go..."

"Ash! Wait up!" Just then, we turn around to see Brock running towards us. "Brock?" I ask.

"You forgot this. As proof of your victory, take an official Pokémon League Badge—a Boulder Badge!" Brock says.

"But I can't accept that, I didn't beat you. I gave up in the end..." I say.

"Nah, I lost to you. You beat me in battle and were kind of all Pokemon. To tell you the truth, I get more pleasure from raising Pokemon than making them battle. I don't care about being a great Pokemon Trainer. I want to become the world's best breeder. I can't leave here because I have to take care of my brothers and sisters. Ash, I want you to take this and fulfill my dream. Will you do that for me?"

Everyone is surprised at what Brock just said, I decide to accept the badge. "Thank you, Brock."

"With a Boulder Badge, Pokémon up to Lv. 20 from other Trainers will listen to you without question." Brock says, and then we're cut off by the same man who was selling the merchandise from before.

"Brock, you should go follow your own dream." Just then, he takes off his disguise and Brock says, "My father..."

"I couldn't become the great Pokemon trainer I wanted to because I was such a failure. And I was too ashamed to go back to my family." Flint says. "Brock, I think it's time for me to take care of my own family, while you can go on a journey and fulfill your dream."

Brock stares at him before saying, "First, there are some things that I must tell you."

Then it turns out that Brock is going to tell him the habits of his siblings and Flint is having a little hard time memorizing it. And after that, Brock asks, "Hey, Ash, are you sure it's okay that I go with you on your Pokemon Journey?"

"Of course, the more the merrier. And, I'm just glad to have a boy in our journey to talk with." I say.

"And you don't want to talk with us?" Serena asks with a frown, and I say, "No, I enjoy talking with you, but just like you girls have your own private matters, boys also have their own as well!"

"Relax, Brother, she's just kidding." Insey sighs as we all laugh a little.
