Miles tossed and turned in his bed as he slept, the tiny fox's imagination running wild with an amazing series of dreams, each one growing better than the last…Be it saving beautiful princesses from fire breathing dragons, exploring new planets in the depths of space or scuba diving in a luscious coral reef, his mind would always come up with new, thrilling, indulging, exciting adventures that would play out in his mind.
The bed creaked ever so slightly as he shuffled around under the thick, warm duvet. His head constantly shifting from one side of the large pillow to the other…His imagination rife with numerous wondrous dreams…However little did he know that in the course of a few hours…Things would flip completely upside down.
…...
Robotnik laid back in his chair, the tubby frame of the doctor sinking into the cosy leather of the seat…He was tired for sure, but ever since he had received that terrible…terrible news a matter of hours ago he needed to stay awake…That foul rodent could arrive any minute now…He had a family now…He couldn't lose Miles, not to that hedgehog of all people…
His eyes gazed wearily, at the numerous security cameras displaying each hallway, room, hangar and even outwards into the inky black void of space…The sound of radar beeping beside him…He felt his heart begin to thud slightly faster and faster as seconds turned into minutes…and minutes turned into hours…Nothing was happening, nothing but the sound of the ventilation and air conditioning could be heard…
The only sights he could see were just…Empty hallways…Empty hangars and the darkness of space, the smell of coffee filling the Doctor's nostrils…He was becoming weary and tired now…Maybe they weren't coming…Maybe he had time to send Miles away to safety…or to fortify…anything…he couldn't lose it now…not like this.
He felt the dread in his heart slowly begin to rise as he heard a small…soft blip on the radar…He turned his head to the scanner…waiting for the next one to be sent out and lo and behold…A small dot on the scanner appeared…slowly growing closer…Blip…Closer…Blip…Closer still…
Robotnik eyes frantically danced through the cameras, looking to see where they were…It was on a singular camera…On a tiny red dot…no larger than a pin head growing closer…Slowly increasing in size…Robotnik frantically pressed at the monitor on his wrist and bellowed into the radio…
"They're coming get Miles to an escape pod now!"
…...
The tiny fox's short legs kicked about in his sleep, his mind rife with dozens of dreams…However something in the next few moments would draw the tiny fox from his slumber…
Orbot's skinny, metallic frame swiftly rushed into the room and rapidly flicked the light switch in the room…The sudden burst of light seeming like an instant rush of adrenaline to the little boy.
He opened his eyes slowly, his vision blurry and groggy. He slurred as he spoke in his usual squeaky high pitched voice.
"O-Orbot? What's happening?" he managed to croak out…However he was interrupted when the robot frantically shook him back and forth.
"Miles, get dressed! You have to get out of here now!" Orbot exclaimed frantically, shaking the tiny fox.
The action itself worked and after a good few hard shakes, the fox had gone to woozy fatigueless to full operation within the span of a few seconds…However he was still unsure of the direness of the situation he was in.
"But Orbot? Why should I go there's nothing wro-"
The fox was cut off by the thunderous, bombastic cacophony of cannonades firing out…The sound of his father's voice booming over the crackly static of a loudspeaker.
"All Egg-Interceptors move out now! Those bastards won't win this time!"
Miles didn't even have time to question it…He knew he was in danger this time…but who from? How could anyone know where he and his father were? Why would his father even be under attack?
He rushed over to his wardrobe and opened it, he ripped out a pair of the same black trousers and leapt into them, the next pieces of clothing that were hastily donned was a black, long sleeved t shirt and his much loved jacket that resembled his father's…then came the goggles which he fitted hastily and sluggishly, making one of the black silicon lens lower down than the other.
Orbot visibly fretted as he watched Miles get dressed, they were very short for time and the little boy was taking too long…In fact when the kid shoddily slid on his shoes, the robot grabbed his hand and rushed him out of the bedroom, their small forms moving down the empty corridors with extreme haste.
…...
Robtonik watched the scene through one of the many wall mounted hallway cameras and grimaced as he did so…He didn't want to send Miles away…But if it was necessary to ensure his safety then he would do it…He wasn't going to let his kid be caught in the crossfire, biological or not.
His eyes gazed back to the security footage, showing the battle occurring outside the Death Egg, it didn't look especially good…he could see the tiny shape of one of his egg carriers getting closer…The shape bobbing and weaving it's way around every individual egg fighter, missile, laser, cannon…Just how did that blue raspberry coloured swine do it?! Every time he could just dodge through it like it was nothing…what would it take for the bastard to leave him alone or die!
He just wanted to know what that hedgehog had against him, yes he may had been justified the first time, but industrialising Green Hill was a necessary evil, the second time was equally unjustified, the first Death Egg was a research station! It was clearly plastered as such and yet he selfishly destroyed it without thinking…And as for this time, he hired that blasted Echidna because he wanted to keep Him…Out of the way.
He only wanted to research those accursed emeralds in peace, that was all he ever wanted and yet he…No they had to make it difficult for him…And now he was going to have not only his home…but his son taken away from him as well…He was tired of this…So, so tired…
A tiny burst of light could be seen as one of the missiles impacted with the hijacked vessel and Robotnik gave a momentary cheer…did he just win? Was that hedgehog…finally gone?! He gave a cry of joy, his tubby form leaping up and down into the air like a lard filled rabbit…He had done it, that hedgehog was no more.
"AHAH! YIPPEEE! Ding dong the hedgehog's dead, which hedgehog? The blue hedgehog! Ding dong the bad hedgehog is dead!" he sang gleefully, in fact he spoke joyously into the loudspeaker's microphone.
"Orbot! Miles! False alarm, the intruders have been neutrali-"
He was interrupted when he saw a golden light begin to glow through the footage of one of the security cameras…stopping the Doctor's dance in an instant…He raced back into his chair and saw the footage…He could see a small golden orb racing towards the Death Egg at alarming speed…Robotnik's face went white as he could see the form rapidly accelerating towards the Death Egg and all he could croak out was a nigh silent,
"Oh no…"
…...
Miles and Orbot raced into one of the many escape pod bays scattered across the Death Egg, it was a small room to be sure, a drab grey smearing the walls and floor, the lighting coming from a singular flickering white bulb which cast down a baleful white light.
"You know Orbot…Maybe it's safe, the cannons and missiles have stopped…" Miles said slowly, clutching the doorway to one of the pods, his chest rapidly rising and falling as he panted…
"I wouldn't bet on it Miles…The intruder your father is facing can be very unpredictable, it's never this easy usually…even when we have gotten the upper hand on him…"
"An upper hand on who Orbot?! Why are we getting attacked?! Where is Dad?!" Miles yelled, getting visibly agitated, his fur sticking up like spikes.
Orbot rested a hand on the anxious boy's shoulder and spoke,
"Listen Miles…Your father isn't a very popular man back on Mobius…"
"But why not? He does so many nice things for me and helps me whenever I need him! Why don't people li-"
THOOOOOM!
A massive shockwave ripped across the Death Egg, sending Miles tumbling to the floor, Orbot swiftly following suite, the noise itself was stupendously loud…Like a cannon had gone off right in the fox's ears. Miles clutched his ears tightly and whined, slowly getting up on his trembling feet… The shock certainly surprised him…And the sudden feeling of the floor shaking was making him queasy…
The sudden phenomena had switched the atmosphere now, instead of the baleful white light, there was a low crimson sheen as sirens blared out across the interior of the Death Egg with the cacophony of a thousand thunder strikes
"Miles, get in the escape pods now!" Orbot cried.
The little fox obeyed without question and leapt into the nearest pod…Orbot would have given a sad grimace if he was capable of such an activity as he pressed a few buttons on the console next to the escape pod…Miles let a tear slip down his cheek as the doors to the pod snapped shut, a hiss of steam being heard as it was vacuum sealed…Making sure that he would be safe and have enough air to at least make it back to the planet alive.
"I'm so sorry Miles…I didn't want to do this…" Orbot whispered before pressing the eject button…
The little fox felt the force of the pod being ejected hit him like a train, it felt like being catapulted as he was sent crashing to the floor…Pain searing through his head as it collided with the metal wall, however it didn't take long for him to regain his senses…
He raced over to the form of a tiny glass window and peered out, he could see the white hot exhaust trail of the pod's fuel as it slowly shot him towards the tiny blue and green orb in the distance…However due to being in space, it didn't take long for it to stop burning at last, now all he could see was the large shape of the Death Egg…His home growing smaller and smaller…
He whimpered, wanting to know where his father was…however something horrible began to happen…He noticed tiny explosions begin to ripple on the surface of the space-station, great reddish orange plumes bursting up through the hull like flowers blooming in spring…
He grew scared as he saw the sight of his home being completely decimated,
"Daddy?" he whispered, feeling more and more tears well up in his eyes…however horror overcame him at the sight of what came next.
He saw the Death Egg…his home…his shelter…give into the damage and detonate…A gargantuan explosion ripping through the nothingness of space…everything on it...utterly destroyed.
"NOOOOOOOOO!" he shrieked, seeing the only refuge he had ever known...the only man who had ever shown him kindness and love…be taken away from him…
He collapsed to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably…His tiny heart had been shattered like glass…why? Why did he have to suffer? Why was it only him that the world seemed to despise?
The tears came out in streams, it wasn't fair! It was not fair…why did everything bad have to happen to him…
He curled up on the cold, hard, metallic floor and cried…he didn't care what happened anymore…his suffering was too great…And he wanted it to all be over…He could feel the pod begin to shake violently at it entered the orbit of the planet…the form of the toddler beginning to rattle like a skeleton until a force like that of an earthquake erupted through the pod…Miles felt the feeling of his body crashing through the air, the metallic wall speeding towards him and then a burning pain in his head…
And everything…went black.
