Even with the war over, the work did not stop. They had matters to smooth out upon their return to Ylisstol on top of needing to find that last gemstone. Robin had spent the better part of the day looking through old records for a hint as to where it might be, but he had a good idea already where they would find it.
However, he eventually opted to take a bit of a break. Once he decided to do so, he almost involuntarily started seeking Lucina out. The two had grown rather close, and that had only deepened on the trip back home. So much so that Robin kept thinking of the jewelers in the market, but shook his head. They were not even officially courting. Nevermind the issues that he feared might plague any deeper relationship they may try to kindle.
Upon reaching the royal quarters where Sumia had, unprompted, told him Lucina should be, Robin was stopped by the sound of a beautiful melody being hummed. Slowly peeking inside, Robin found Lucina humming away at the baby princess as she put her to sleep. The scene was more than enough to have him wait outside, not wanting to interrupt.
Eventually, the child asleep, Lucina exited the room only to be startled by the waiting Robin.
"Sorry, I didn't want to interrupt," Robin whispered, "That was quite a nice melody."
"Oh," It was amazing how she could be such a hardened warrior and also strangely adorable, but Lucina managed it as she tucked some hair behind her ear sheepishly, "It was a lullaby my mother sang to me as a child. She was having trouble falling asleep so I hummed a few verses from memory."
"That's sweet," Robin smiled. She had a way of eliciting those from him.
"I don't know about that. I still think it's a bit awkward to be putting her to bed, but mother has been dealing with political stuff today."
"Maybe she wanted you to get adjusted. Maybe she hoped that seeing her would remind you that you are your own person."
"Hmm," Lucina hummed as they walked away from the princess' room, "I do remember fighting my bedtime more than that."
"Oh? Were you a rambunctious child?"
Lucina immediately blushed upon realizing she had shared something less than flattering, "I was active. I preferred playtime to bedtime. I often had to be caught before being put to bed. Though that changed after…"
"Right," Robin quickly sought to change topics, "Still, you did pretty well even if she is a bit more mild mannered. I didn't know you were so good with kids."
"I'm not, really. At least I don't think I am. I never really considered myself the motherly type. Never had much time for it. The idea seemed like an outlandish fantasy."
"I think you'd be a great mother," Robin's smile was small but genuine.
"No need for flattery, Robin. Besides, even if that were the case, I don't see myself as particularly sought after. Royalty might have been the only thing I had to attract a husband, but that isn't much of a factor anymore, is it?"
"You sell yourself short. Any man would be lucky to marry you. Though, if it makes you feel any better, I'm not sure my prospects of finding a wife are all that great."
"Surely you jest. It should not be hard for you to find someone."
"Maybe," Robin afforded a sidelong glance, "But it's about finding the right someone."
Lucina felt his gaze and stopped, "Did you have someone in mind?"
"Maybe, but it's complicated."
"Complicated how?"
"Well, for starters, I'm not sure how her family would take it, but I could deal with that. Though I'm not entirely sure if she returns my feelings."
"I think there is a good chance she does," Robin honestly could not tell if she had caught on or was just being supportive.
"Maybe she does, but our situation still isn't normal. She's from pretty far away you might could say, and I think she may be planning to go home after this is all said and done."
"I see."
"Though, I'd be happy to at least get a little time with her. Even if she does go back to where she thinks she belongs, I'd love to have that time with her. I might even go with her if she insists."
"R-Robin, you are quite an important man. Surely you can't mean to just up and leave."
"I wouldn't want to ideally, but she's worth it if I had to choose. This is all hypothetical anyway. Like I said, I don't even know if she feels the same way."
"I see. Is it someone I know? Perhaps I could ask for you."
Robin chuckled a little, "I'd say you'd be the best one to know actually."
"I am?" So she had not figured it out. Fair. Subtext was not her strong suite.
"Yes. It's you, Lucina." Robin had not been planning to confess today, but he had come this far, "Somewhere along the way, I fell head over heels for you. I tried not to, but I could not resist your charms. I'm sorry if this makes things awkward, but that's how I feel."
"Oh, Robin," Lucina's face was heating up now, "I don't know what to say. I never thought-I never thought you would feel that way about me of all people. I don't know what you see in me, but I know that I have fallen for you as well."
"Those are some of the sweetest words I've ever heard," Robin was smiling ear to ear, "And I meant what I said. You don't have to choose what you'll do right now. I'll simply cherish the time we have."
Robin swore her smile in that moment was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, "Thank you, Robin. I do not deserve you, but I will cherish you all the same."
Oh yeah, he was definitely visiting the jewelers tomorrow.
A/N: While I do like their support chain, I do have a critique of their S support namely in why did Robin have to name drop Chrom?
Also, for the first part, I do kinda headcanon that Lucina is a good singer. That said, not that many get to hear her, generally being something she does for her children.
That said, thoughts on Morgan's inclusion? Particularly in longer stories. Do you like her to always be in, or do you prefer her presence be explained? Also, why did it take so long for someone to comment on that unfinished sentence? Must have not saved the rest of it somehow. Not sure if that was me or the site.
