Chapter 29: New Powers

Disclaimer:

I will be starting a 5-day update and there will be a chapter every day this week for you guys to read! I got ahead of myself when writing and am ahead by a lot so I thought why not do this? The previous chapter had the end of the Royal Capital attack and now we're in for some more cool stuff. Hope you guys enjoy!

A day had passed since the attack on the Royal Capital. The Eye of the Midnight Sun were behind the whole ordeal and the Magic Knights realised that this threat wasn't going to go away any time soon.

Lucas, along with the other Golden Dawn members who were on site, had returned yesterday and told everyone what had happened.

The group had wanted to report to the captain, but Vangeance was nowhere to be found. Though, they told Langris about the developments.

"I've had some word from the Magic Knights Headquarters already and been told the situation. It also looks like our new recruits seem to have gone up in the ranks", Langris said with a smirk.

It was now the early morning and Lucas was laying in his bed, staring at the ceiling. The curtains were drawn, and no light was being let through. Lucas had slept well but was up early before the others and chose to stay in bed for a while to think.

"So much happened yesterday… the enemies are getting stronger, so I'll have to get stronger". The tired mage put his right arm up towards the ceiling and had it stay there for a few seconds.

"Time Magic, hm?" Lucas looked at his arm, where his other magic originates and sighed. "The Wizard King is such a powerful mage with his Time Magic. Is that something I could do?"

"It's been 10 years since I put the lock on my Time magic. I only wanted to focus on my Light Magic but doing so has left me in bad situations. The fight with Mystic in the dungeon – I could have done better. The fight against Max – I could have potentially saved Aiden from being hurt…". Lucas got up into a sitting position and moved his right hand around.

"I think I should start training with my Time Magic. I don't feel too comfortable letting the others know about it right now, but a little practice can't hurt".

"There's also something else… Yuno and Mimosa let me know that I acted a bit odd towards Alecdora back at the banquet hall. It had something to do with me being angry? I'm not an angry person… I remember it happening against that royal, Nebra, as well. My anger came over me and I seemed like a different person".

"I want to make friends and avoid trouble like that. Maybe if I get a hold on both my attributes, the uneasiness could disappear?"

The Golden Dawn mage then got up from his bed and put his slippers on. He turned towards the bathroom and was going to get ready for the day.

A few minutes had passed, and Lucas returned, ready and prepared for the day with a new set of clothes on.

He was about to leave the room but looked back at his desk and saw the painting and flower encyclopaedia that his sister, Iris, had given him.

"I should write back to the people at the village. Big Sis Iris, as well as David and Melanie. So much has gone on so I haven't had the time. Maybe I'll take some time right now", he said to himself.

The Light mage sat down on the chair next to his desk and brought out some paper and pencil. He started to write about everything that happened and what he had done. He included his first mission with Yuno when they were sent to patrol the outer walls of the Royal Capital. The dungeon mission, as well as the Royal Capital attack. He wrote about Asta, Yuno, Noelle, as well as Klaus, Mimosa, and Daisy. Eventually, he ended the letter.

"That should do it. I'll add a lot of my Magic Knight pay too. It's good to help out and I've received a lot of yul from my work". Lucas stretched his arms. However, as he did, he glanced at his flower encyclopaedia once more.

"Hm". He picked it up and started flicking through the pages. After a few seconds he landed on the page he was thinking about.

"I knew it! That first mission with Yuno, I found those Red Daisies in the grass. They're here in the book too. Crazy that those flowers reminded me of Daisy, as well as the colour scheme of a blue and purple shade resembling her eyes. Kinda cool that her name is the same as those flowers. Maybe I should get her some?"

After finishing his letter, Lucas left his room to go towards the common room. Lucas met up with the others and after posting his letter, they had breakfast. The last thing to do was to enter the main area for morning briefing where the Vice-Captain, Langris, was stood at the top of the stairs. The large glass mosaic of a rising sun was in the back behind him.

Langris spoke and let the group know that they could take a few days off because of the recent events, so there would be no missions. He also mentioned the fact that Captain Vangeance would be away for a period of time with an important mission.

Finally, as the briefing was ending, he also mentioned that the squad received a large number of stars, as well as two of the members going up in ranks.

"Lucas and Yuno, the two rookies that seem to love showing off", Langris continued. "You two have been promoted to 2nd Class Junior Magic Knights. Congratulations".

The two Knights wore a smile on their faces, though Yuno's was a bit less obvious as he wanted to keep up his cool exterior. Though, he genuinely was happy.

"I moved up the ranks a bit. This is a good feeling!" Lucas pumped his fists.

After that, the morning briefing was over, and the squad had a few days to do whatever they wanted. A few of them had gone to train, a few had gone shopping, and a few were just goofing around.

"Congrats for ranking up", Mimosa spoke after the group had left the common room.

"Yeah, your efforts are being recognised by the Wizard King himself! You should be proud". Klaus put his arm on Lucas's shoulder.

"Thanks guys, but I'm not done yet!" Lucas responded.

Next to them, was the Wind mage who was stood listening in on their praises.

"Hey! Prasie Yuno as well! He did great too!" A small, yet high-pitched voice spoke to which all three of Lucas, Klaus, and Mimosa reacted to.

"Wh-who… wh-what are you?" Lucas asked, clearly surprised to see a miniature human sitting on Yuno's shoulder, legs crossed.

The voice in question was actually the Wind Spirit who had chosen Yuno. The Sylph was quite small and wore a light-green and short dress with two slightly transparent wings and pink blushed cheeks.

"Allow me to introduce you to Bell. This is the Wind Spirit that I got back at that dungeon. I only just properly met her yesterday though". Yuno used his right hand to pet the spirit in a friendly way.

"The Wind Spirit?!" Lucas shouted. The others saw how excited Lucas got and they chuckled.

"S-sorry about that. I've read about the Four Great Spirits when I was younger, but I never thought I'd meet one! Nice to meet you, Bell. I'm Lucas", he put his finger out for the spirit to hold on to as a different form of a handshake.

Bell was surprised that she was accepted so quickly. She realised that she could come off a bit annoying because of how hyper she was but regardless, she accepted the gesture. "Nice to meet you too, Lucas!"

After everyone greeted the spirit, they were about to set off on their ways. Yuno was going to train with his magic and Bell, and Klaus was going to go shopping.

"So, Lucas. What are you going to do today?" Mimosa asked, her hands behind her lower back. The Vermillion smiled as she asked.

"I think I'll train my magic today, by myself. I want to try a few things out", he replied.

"Oh, I see. Can I join you?" She asked.

"Sorry… I-I'd like to work on my own for this particular bit", he laughed slightly awkwardly. "I'd love for her to join, but I don't think I can reveal it just yet".

Mimosa stood straight and sighed a bit. "That's fine. Just let me know whenever you need help", she smiled.

After that short interaction, the Golden Dawn members went on their individual ways.

"So, Yuno. Did you say you wanted to train with my power?" Bell hopped up and down on her host's shoulder.

"That's right. If it weren't for you then I'd have been dead. I'd like to mix my own powers with your own to get stronger, together". Yuno took out his grimoire.

"Silly. I've said my power is your power! Though, I think I know what you mean. You want to use both of our abilities to become stronger, right? Let's do it!" She jumped off from Yuno's shoulder and floated right next to him.

Yuno and Bell had found a vastly open area where none of the other members of the squad were near. It had large plains of grass stretching wide and many trees alongside the edges of the area.

"When I lost my senses, I felt the mana inside me and all around me very clearly. Can I get that feeling alongside my five senses?" That was what Yuno was going to train for today. "Bell. First of all, I'd like you to use your magic against mine".

"Hm? Me fight you? Well, okay then but don't get too mad when you find out how much stronger I am than you!" The spirit winked.

"No chance", Yuno smirked.

As the two got ready, Yuno flicked through his grimoire to look at his spells. He and Bell separated and instead faced off against each other for the first time.

The two got ready and started to concentrate on their training session.

"Wind Spirit Magic: Sylph's Breath!" Bell inhaled a small amount of air but transformed it into immense power when she exhaled out. The air turned into strong winds, and she was blowing Yuno backwards in the wake of her attack.

Yuno was getting pushed back and because of the open field, there was nothing to hold onto for any sort of grip to protect himself.

"Bell is strong even without her powers being combined with mine. How was it that she was randomly in that dungeon?" The Wind mage thought for only a second before concentrating on the fight again.

"There's nothing for me to hold onto so I'll use a spell to counter hers! Wind Magic: Towering Tornado!" The mage summoned a huge tornado that swept up the air and wind around and used that to strengthen itself.

The two magic attacks clashed against each other and the wind that was around all dispersed outwards causing the leaves on the trees to rustle, as well as the grass on the floor to move violently.

"Looks like we're evenly matched for now", Yuno said.

Bell floated over to her host and spoke with a sincere tone and innocent voice. "Say, Yuno. I get why you want to train like this, but it would be better if we trained together and became stronger like that". The Wind Spirit slowly sat on Yuno's shoulder.

For some reason, Yuno didn't understand what she was saying at first.

"All my life, I haven't really trained with anyone else. Even at Hage I would be on my own to train. Asta would often ask to train together but I would want to be on my own. Is that weird?" Yuno asked.

Bell thought for a moment and then opened her eyes as a thought came to her mind. "It's not exactly weird but fighting alongside someone is something that can't be matched. If you fight alongside someone, you can cover their weaknesses and they can cover yours", she said with a smile.

"I don't have weaknesses", Yuno replied with a poker face.

Bell stopped talking and stared at her host and face palmed.

"You're quite stubborn you know that?" Bell replied.

"Stubborn and you still chose me as a host. Now that's saying something", Yuno smirked.

The two laughed for a few seconds enjoying the conversation between them.

"I'm just saying, like I have been for a while, my power is an extension of yours. If you weren't strong, then you wouldn't have drawn me to you. Think of it like we're 50% of each other's power. If we combine our efforts, then we'll be at 100%!" Bell jumped up and down.

"Wow, that's a good way to put it. I don't know why I never thought of it like that", Yuno replied.

The two, instead of facing against each other, now were side-by-side. Yuno standing up and Bell on his right shoulder.

"So, what now?" Yuno asked.

"Beats me. I just wanted to be with you", Bell replied cheekily.

The Golden Dawn mage sighed comedically. "I think I have an idea of what I want to do. You know how Asta fights with his swords?"

"Asta… Asta… Oh, the shrimpy?" Bell asked.

"Yes, the shrimpy. Well, what if we made a spell that used a weapon as well. I'd still like to keep it a long-range spell but adding another to our grimoire would be useful". Yuno pointed out.

Bell scratched her chin for a while. "Another weapon? Swords – no. An axe – nah. What about… a bow? That is something for long range". Bell suggested.

Yuno thought about it for a few minutes and sat down for the time being. He stared at the sky and tried to picture how they could make a bow construct. The mage saw the tree leaves rustle in the breeze. He saw the grass underneath him wave side-to-side. He also saw a few sticks and broken tree branches at the edges of the field.

"Sticks… a breeze… and strong winds…! I got it". Yuno stood up straight away and spoke with Bell. "The bow needs to be strong, so I'll try to make a bow myself with some Wind Creation Magic. If we do this for now, then we can think about perfecting it after".

Yuno closed his eyes and generated small amounts of wind in his palms. First, he created a long and thin piece that would serve as the handle where Yuno would hold. Next, he made the string out of wind that would be used with arrows which he then made next.

"Wind Creation Magic: Gale White Bow!" Yuno formed the bow construct and had it floating in front of him.

The black-haired mage then used the arrows he formed and had them shoot outwards by using the bow, but it didn't seem like there was enough power.

"Since you spoke about combining our powers, why don't you use your Sylph's Breath spell to shoot the arrows outwards? We'll aim for that singular tree in the distance" He asked the spirit.

Bell looked at Yuno and then the bow with starry eyes. "What a great idea! Let's try that".

As Yuno summoned his Gale White Bow again, instead of him pulling on the string and firing the arrows, he removed the string and had Bell blow on them instead and the result was to their liking.

The arrows flew all the way to the other side of the grassy area, and it even destroyed parts of the ground where it landed at the end. The huge sound it made could probably have been heard by the other squad members with how fast and strong the impact of the spell was. However…

"That wasn't good enough…", Yuno panted. It seemed like creating a spell from scratch like that put a tough toll on his body. Also, the spell itself was largely inaccurate as the arrows strayed from their intended path. Not to mention that the wind bow itself had started to disperse and disappear.

"Not good enough? I'd say that's pretty good for your first try. Let's keep practicing!" Bell cheered.

"Don't you mean 'our' first try?" Yuno smiled.

Yuno and the Wind Spirit smiled at each other before continuing to practice.

On the other side of the Golden Dawn HQ, another Magic Knight was starting to practice with his magic for the first time. Not his first attribute, but the one that had manifested later on.

The sun was just starting to set, and the skies slowly turned from a bright blue to a mild yellow with the sun rays colouring the scenery. The birds were singing in the trees as they got ready for the night. However, Lucas's day was far from over.

"I just… can't get it right!" He shouted. The teen was frustrated with how his Time Magic wouldn't seem to work now that he had actually made the decision to use it.

"For once I want to use that magic, but it won't come out…", Lucas sighed. His hands were on his knees as he was tired from his training.

The mage sat down and then lied on the grassy floor he was on. In terms of size, it was the same type of area that Yuno had been training on, but there were a few trees in the middle of it.

"The few times I've used it, I've either been happy, angry, or frustrated. When I picked those flowers back in the town of Missbrauch as a five-year-old, I was happy. I also realised I did in fact use it against Mystic in the dungeon and I was angry. When we fought Max, I was frustrated that I couldn't only rely on my Light Magic…". Lucas closed his eyes.

As he did, he had a deeper thought. "Is it linked to my emotions? It would make sense, but then again, I'm feeling frustrated right now, but I can't get it to work".

Just as Lucas had tried to calm his mind, the thoughts about his inability to use his Time Magic made him jolt up and shout. This reaction making him even more annoyed than he was at first.

"Do I even have any Time Magic spells?" He flicked through his four-leaf grimoire and carefully read the pages. After a few seconds he stopped at a page and noticed that it was in fact a spell to do with his second attribute.

"H-Heaven's Time?" He put his finger to his lip and thought. "Oh! I remember getting this spell just before I passed out against Mars and Mystic in the dungeon. How did I forget about it… No, that's not true. I just didn't want to use it. It has the description of the spell, and it does seem quite cool… Man, I really want to try it out".

With that small sense of elation he felt, he quickly got to his feet and tried summoning his spell. "Time Magic: Heaven's Time!"

The mage had his body tense up with the feeling that something could happen. Though, that feeling was betrayed as nothing happened yet again. As he opened his eyes and saw the lack of any type of result, he fell to the floor and looked to the stars that had slowly started to appear in the sky.

"Nothing works…", he thought.

A few minutes has passed and the dual mage didn't move from his spot. That was until he heard the soft footsteps of someone walking towards him. The sound of walking was slightly muffled under the frail grass. Lucas turned to see who the mage was.

The mage put her hand up and waved. "Hi there Lucas. You've been here for hours, haven't you?" She asked.

"Oh, hi Mimosa. Yeah, I've been training or at least trying to", Lucas felt dejected from his efforts going to waste.

"What's wrong?" She asked as she knelt down and sat next to her squad mate.

Lucas also sat up from his previous position. "I've been… trying a new technique out, or I've been wanting to, but it just won't work properly. I've had instances before where I think I've used it but now… nothing". He tried to explain his worries without revealing the full truth.

"I get you. It's the same with me". Mimosa replied to which Lucas reacted to.

"It is?" He asked.

"Yeah. I've been wanting to try a new spell out that's very different to what I have done before. It's an attack spell but I've had no idea on what it would even look like. I felt so annoyed that I've been helpless in the last few missions. Noelle and I, and even you, got injured in the dungeon mission, and I feel like I should've done more when the Eye of the Midnight Sun attacked". The Vermillion leaned back on the grass and looked up.

"I thought I could train on the spell with you, but you were busy. I still tried today anyway but no luck", she sighed.

Hearing this made Lucas feel extremely bad. It was bad enough that he had opted to leave her out with his training but since he was an emotional person anyway, it made it worse.

"I… I'm sorry I left you alone like that!" Lucas turned to sit opposite the royal. He looked into her eyes as the final glints of the setting sun reflected off her yellow-tinted eyes. He then held her hand softly. "We'll train together soon!"

With this Mimosa started to blush and became animated. She didn't move but her facial expressions changed from shock, to surprise, to embarrassment and her cheeks became red. "Oh… umm, y-y-y-yeah! Th-that would be good if we c-could train together!"

Lucas noticed her acting weirdly and wondered why. When he shifted his gaze from her light-green eyes to his hands holding hers, he immediately realised the situation and let go of them straight away.

"S-sorry about that!" He shouted.

"I-it's no problem", she turned her head away slightly and smiled, still having the same rosy blush to her cheeks.

They sat silent for a few seconds. Obviously, the situation that happened was on their minds but eventually they broke that silence.

"Lucas?" Mimosa asked.

"Yes?" Lucas replied.

"Since it's getting late, when you train next, I have a little piece of advice that could work. If you're struggling with something, just take a breather and remind yourself why you're doing it in the first place and your mind should become calm and make it easy for you to move forward", the royal tilted her head and smiled.

"Focus on why I'm doing it in the first place, hm? I guess it's because I want to become stronger", he replied.

Mimosa pouted and crossed her arms. "That's not right, is it?"

Lucas wondered why she said that. "It's not? Oh… It's not because I guess I want to be stronger. It is because I want to be stronger". He pumped his fist.

The Plant mage smiled though that expression quickly turned to one of worry.

"What's up, Mimosa?" Lucas wondered.

"I forgot one of the other reasons I came here! I wanted to check up on you but it's also WAY past our dinner time now! We have to run back and see if there's anything left!" Mimosa quickly stood up and started running.

"Oh no, let's hurry!" Lucas copied the girl in front and ran alongside her.

Lucas and Mimosa were almost an hour late for their dinner. As they got to the dinner hall, they saw empty tables and chairs with the food all being long gone. Fortunately for them, two of their squad members had saved two meals for them and kept them warm under a silver dining dish. The Knights were Klaus and Yuno and the four of them enjoyed the rest of the night.

The dark sky stretched across the Clover Kingdom and the Magic Knights had all gone to bed. Due to Vangeance's mission, the squad were granted a few more free days of rest but could still choose to do missions if they wanted to. That was exactly what David Swallow of the Golden Dawn did.

The tall nobleman was sitting just outside of his room on a wooden railing that separated the rooms from the grassy common area where many would relax on. David brushed his short, blond hair and looked at the moon with his blue eyes.

"The mission tomorrow… I'll need a bit of help from a few members of the squad", he realised as he tapped his boot on the floor repeatedly. "If this mission goes well, then I'll be sorted for life!"

David's eyes started to glisten with the sparkles of the starry night reflecting from them.

"Oh, maybe I'll get one of the new recruits to help me. I'm thinking Lucas since I feel like he needs to get out more. Yuno… well, he's Yuno and probably won't enjoy it", the nobleman thought.

"Well, that settles it. I'll think of the other person tomorrow before the mission, but I'll get Lucas to join me!" David laughed.

"The mission… my mission is to get a girlfriend at tomorrow's mixer!"

NOTES:

Hope you guys liked this sort of 'cool down' chapter. I'll be exploring more of the Golden Dawn and its members in this fanfic so look forward to that!

With what's happening in the manga, no spoilers but Yuno is becoming one of my favourite characters and so I want to flesh him out a bit more here, while still keeping a lot of what makes Yuno… Yuno.

Lucas is starting to accept that other side of him and we're slowly getting there. I wonder when he'll use it properly for the first time? Well… I do know :P But do you guys?
