Unexpected Situations
Chapter 2 Now What?
-Regina's POV-
Whale repeated, "Regina's pregnant."
I shook my head. "Whale, you and I both know that cannot be. I took a potion years ago that prevented me from having children, and you're telling me I'm pregnant despite all that."
"How far along is she?" Emma inquired, and Whale replied, "I can get the gynecologist on call to do an ultrasound."
I nodded, and Whale left the room. I looked down at my flat stomach and placed my hand on it. There was no way that Robin and I could conceive on our own, so I know he had nothing to do with this. This had to have happened with magic. I had no sexual relations with anyone magical, so how in the hell did this happen?
"Regina." I turned to look at Emma, and she said, "It's going to be okay. We can figure this out."
"We?" I asked, trying to wrap my head around everything that was happening. "Emma, I am going to figure this out. The only way this could happen is with powerful magic. If dark magic created this, I want it gone! I want nothing to do with the darkness again!"
"Regina! It's not the baby's fault if dark magic is involved!"
I was about to argue, but a woman with shoulder-length curly blonde hair walked in, rolling what I am guessing is the ultrasound machine.
"Hello, Madam Mayor. I'm Dr. Amy Fabin, and Dr. Whale asked me to do an ultrasound to determine how far along in the pregnancy you are."
I looked at Emma, and she squeezed my hand. "It's okay. It won't hurt."
"Alright, Madam Mayor, I will get you to spread your legs for me to insert the probe vaginally."
I followed her directions, and she did just as she said. My heart was racing, and the monitor was beeping at a face pace.
"Breathe, Regina."
Emma had to remind me to breathe because I didn't know I was holding it.
"Ah, there you are, little one. You are precisely six weeks in. You want to see."
"You mean, I can see the baby right now?"
"Yes, let me turn the screen so you can see."
She turned the machine around, and I saw something bean-shaped. Dr. Fabin pointed out, "There's the head, the little nubs right here, and here are the arms and legs forming. Right here is the heart forming. It won't be long until it starts beating."
Tears grazed my cheeks, and I couldn't help but love this tiny little being growing inside me.
"Want me to print out a picture?"
I nodded, and she handed me the printed picture. "Now, I will want to see you next week so we can follow up and then schedule you to talk to the nutritionist about what you can and cannot eat during the pregnancy."
She turned off the machine, removed the probe, cleaned it, and added, "I will return with your appointment on my card."
I was still staring at the ultrasound photo, and Emma replied, "Thank you, Dr. Fabin."
I heard the door close and ran my finger over the bean-shaped baby.
"Six weeks, isn't that two months?" I nodded to Emma's question then it hit me. "Emma, exactly two months ago, you took the darkness from me and became the Dark One. I had no sexual relations with anyone magical. The only thing that happened magically that day was when you…"
No! Could it be that? No! Could it be that when Emma stuck the dagger into the darkness, I became pregnant then?
"Regina, what's wrong? You're pale again. Do you need to throw up?"
"No, I must talk to Gold when I leave this hospital."
Emma let go of my hand, sat on the bed, placed her hand on mine, looking at me. "Why do you need to see him?"
I looked at her and said, "I need answers, Emma. I magically got pregnant two months ago, and I need to know who 'fathered' this baby. He is the only one that can give me a definite answer."
-Emma's POV-
Regina slept while I was awake during the night. We figured out the baby is magical, so now she's eliminating who's the baby daddy. We also figured out that she feels better when I touch her. Great! Now I guess I will have to go where she goes, always holding her hand so she won't get sick and pass out again. Ugh, this sucks!
"Emma?"
I turned to look at her. "Yeah, I'm right here. What is it?"
"I'm sorry you're stuck here with me."
I squeezed her hand and rolled the chair to see her face. "I didn't get stuck with you. It would be best if you weren't alone. I don't want to be alone right now because I will cry myself to sleep because of Killian. I want to be here for you and for me, too."
She smiled. "Thank you, you're the best friend that stuck with me the longest. You don't know how that makes me feel."
"I can imagine. We need to figure out how this touching thing will work when we return to work. I won't be able to be with you all day long."
She shook her head. "I don't know. We'll figure something out when that time comes. Try and get some sleep, Emma. I don't want to be the reason that you didn't get any sleep."
"Don't worry about me. I can sleep anywhere, thanks to the foster care system."
I couldn't tell you when we both went to sleep. What I do know is when we woke up.
-Regina's POV-
Damn it! Who turned on the light? I opened my eyes, and when I looked down, Emma was still asleep, holding my hand.
"Good morning, Madam Mayor."
"Whale, I'm going to kill you! Why the hell did you turn on that blinding light above me?"
"I'm checking your vitals."
I groaned as the blood pressure cup inflated and tightened on my arm. Emma lifted her head, and I asked, "How did you sleep?"
"I would have still been sleeping if this light wasn't in my face."
"Blood pressure is good, your oxygen levels are normal, and I would like Emma to let go of your hand to see if anything would change."
Emma let my hand go, and the nausea quickly returned. She grabbed my hand, and the nausea was held at bay. Whale handed Emma a prescription paper.
"This is for the nausea."
"But the nausea only comes when I stop touching her. The nausea is because of the magic being drained. How would this medicine help?"
Whale replied, "This is not for morning sickness. This is strictly for nausea. Here's your appointment card from Dr. Fabin. She asked me to give it to you. I'll start the paperwork to discharge you, and your nurse Kenley will come shortly."
I nodded, and he left the room after Emma took my appointment card. My hand rubbed my stomach then Emma placed her hand on top of mine. I looked at her, and she said, "It will be fine. I'm here if you need me."
I couldn't hold back the tears any longer. She embraced me while I cried.
-Emma's POV-
I held her as she cried. I couldn't help but think back to what she said last night. "Emma, exactly two months ago, you took the darkness from me and became the Dark One. I had no sexual relations with anyone magical. The only thing that happened magically that day was when you…" Oh shit! Could I be the one that got her pregnant? If it is me, she's going to kill me! The door opened, and I broke the embrace to see who it was.
"Good morning, Madam Mayor. Are you ready to get rid of the IV?"
"Absolutely."
"I apologize for hurting you ahead of time because this tape adheres well."
Kenley began pulling on the tape, and Regina winced because I knew it hurt. After removing the needle, Kenley placed a band-aid to stop the bleeding. She removed the blood pressure cuff and the heart monitor pads from Regina's chest.
"Dr. Whale should return shortly with the discharge papers."
"Thank you," I said, then she left the room.
"Emma." I turned to look at Regina, and she continued, "I still stand by what I said yesterday. After I get discharged, we are going to see Gold."
I nodded. "Okay, and that's what we'll do."
Whale returned with the paperwork, and Regina signed it.
"Alright, you're free to go."
She used her magic to change into one of her pantsuits and a maroon silk shirt. I could tell she felt nauseated, and I held her hand.
"Thank you, I didn't want to start the day by throwing up. Now, let's go."
"You're the boss."
She laughed as I used my magic to whisk us away from this place.
