Chapter Thirty-Two: Drowning.
Staring blankly out of the window of his chambers, Tommen had never felt more lost in his entire life; there were so many people around him trying to tell him what to do. There seemed to be no right answer and he wished he was strong enough to know what to do, he hadn't even visited his mother since she had returned to the Red Keep. Since her return she had been locked away in her chambers, the Sparrows keeping a close eye on who visited the disgraced Queen but there was no sign of them releasing Margaery.
The doors to his chamber opened and Jaime Lannister entered, his uncle looking worse for wear as he made his way into the centre of the room and bowed to Tommen. Concern was written across his face at the state of Tommen, the boy seemed to be wasting away before his eyes and Jaime knew that the news that he had to deliver would only make it worse.
"Your sister has decided to stay in Dorne. She sends her congratulations of your marriage and promises to visit you soon," Jaime stated breaking the silence, he hadn't known what to expect when he returned to King's Landing but it wasn't this. Cersei spurned him, she blamed her imprisonment on him and swore that if he'd been here like he was supposed to be then she'd never have ended up in a cell.
She seemed to forget that she had been the one to send him to Dorne, she had been the one to instruct Jaime to fetch Myrcella and bring her back when now it seemed she was safer in Dorne. Tommen didn't speak, he didn't even acknowledge that Jaime was in the room and it made the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard; there was silence and Jaime shifted awkwardly before reaching into his pocket.
Myrcella had begged him to deliver this letter to Tommen, she had insisted on writing to her brother and told him that it was for Tommen's eyes only. Jaime had agreed, respecting her wish for private correspondence with her brother knowing that if anyone could reach Tommen right now then it could be Myrcella; the two had always shared a special bond very much unlike his own with Cersei.
"A letter from your sister Your Grace," Jaime stated moving to set the letter on the table next to Tommen, he didn't know what else to do but he knew that he had to report to Kevin once he was finished here. His uncle was eager to learn where he had been during this time and insisted that there was much to be discussed especially during this time about what they were going to do. Taking one last look at Tommen, Jaime had never felt more lost in his entire life and he quickly made his exit unable to see the young boy like this now.
Once the door to his chamber was closed, there was no movement from Tommen for a moment before he slowly reached for the letter from his sister. His hands were slow to open the parchment, a part of him a little upset that Myrcella wasn't coming home but he didn't blame her; if he had the chance to escape this hell then he would do so and never come back.
My dearest Tommen,
It feels like only yesterday that we were standing on the shore saying our farewells before I set sail to Dorne. I never could have imagined that everything would work out the way that it did.
There is no denying that Joffrey's death was a shock when I learned of it, but my fear for what would become of you is greater than that. I know our mother will be whispering in your ear about what should be done but I pray that you do not listen to her.
What happens now in King's Landing is her fault and her fault alone. There is so much that I wish to discuss with you, so much that I have learned that I wish that I could tell you but it is unsafe for me to write such things here.
I am on your side little brother and I know you do not wish for this crown. So I offer you a way out if needed, one that will set us free from the dangers that our own mother has created for the two of us.
Uncle Jaime has been accompanied by two of my betroths cousins, Nymeria and Sarella Sand will should you require it will allow you to send letters to someone that will be able to guide you better than I in these next steps.
You are not alone, no matter what mother says. It is not us against the world.
I pray this letter finds you well, the tales of the Sparrows reach us here in Dorne. Trystane and I wish you the best and I hope to be reunited with you one day.
All my love, Myrcella
Setting down the letter that Myrcella had sent him, Tommen felt tears in his eyes and he quickly wiped his face with the back of his hand. He felt so lonely trapped here and a part of him leaped with joy at the news that Myrcella had written to him; he felt so lost and yet here was his sister offering him a way out.
Staring down at the letter that Myrcella had sent him, he scanned the letter once more time before he got to his feet; he knew if this letter was discovered then his sister would be in trouble. Casting it into the flames Tommen stared down at it as it burned, he would use the channels that Myrcella offered to him; he wanted out of this situation that he found himself in.
There was no light at the end of the tunnel for him, there was no escape or way that things could improve; his mother had made sure that there could be no happy ending for him and he knew what had to be done. Squaring his shoulders, Tommen watched as the last of the letter burned knowing that it would be best to invite the new ambassadors from Dorne to meet with him. He would act his part as king until he was able to get out of this, Myrcella was offering him a way out and he would take it with both hands.
Reaching for his crown that was set upon the table, he put it on his head and made moves to leave his room for the first time in weeks with hope in his heart.
Sitting at his desk working through the various scrolls, Jon Snow couldn't wrap his head around how the last few years of his life had been since he had joined the Night's Watch. Now he sat here as Commander of the Night's Watch and a part of him wondered if it had all been worth it in the end.
There was a time that he had tried to leave the Night's Watch when the war had first started, he felt that his place would have been at Robb's side and that he could have helped his brother avenge their father's death. It hadn't been easy here, especially after Ned Stark had been declared a traitor to the realm and executed; if it hadn't been for his friends and Jeor Mormont that he doubted he would have remained. The door to his chambers opened and Olly stepped inside, the boy had become his steward since Jon had been risen in rank and Sam had headed to the Reach to train as a Maester upon the death of Maester Aemon.
"Lord Commander. It's one of the wildlings you brought back. Says he knows your Uncle Benjen. Says he's still alive," Olly told him having been sent by Alliser to collect the Lord Commander from his office. Things had been rather strained between the two when Olly had originally looked up to Jon because of his actions with the Wildings that Olly hated with a passion.
"Are you sure he's talking about Benjen?" Jon asked getting to his feet, there had been no word from his uncle since he had left nearly five years ago and went missing. Jon had thought that he was long since dead, he had lost hope especially after the news of Robb's murder had reached him; there seemed to be a lack of Starks in the world that left him uncomfortable.
"Says he was first Ranger. Said he knows where to find him," Olly replied with a nervous look on his face, he tried to play it off and shrugged his shoulders knowing that there was no going back now. They couldn't allow Jon to ruin the Night's Watch because he had become a Wilding lover, he had betrayed his oaths and that could not be allowed to stand. Rushing from his room down to the ground, he was met by Alliser who nodded to him and started to lead Jon to where the man was.
"Man says he saw your uncle at Hardhome the last full moon," Alliser stated while they walked together, his face betrayed nothing of what was to come and he acted as if he wasn't about to commit treason in his actions. For as far as Alliser was concerned, he was doing the right thing to defend the realm from the wildings that he had sworn to fight against.
"He could be lying," Jon replied, his eyes sweeping the area trying to spot the man that he had been told about; a heavy snow laid on the ground and the air was cold; winter was officially on it's way it seemed. It was more snow than Jon had experienced, his time here at the Wall had really been eye opening; he had been born during the summer even his time over the Wall with the wildings had taught him so much.
"Could be. There are ways to find out," Alliser said leading the way, he directed Jon passed a group of Brothers holding touches towards a corner of the yard where a sign had been placed. TRAITOR. Jon turned around to see that he was corner and that was when Alliser made his move, he stabbed hm in the gut with no emotion on his face.
"For the Watch," Alliser told him, he stepped back away from Jon who stumbled at the action before another brother stepped forward and stabbed Jon. The words 'for the watch' were repeated again and again, as one brother after another stepped forward and stabbed Jon; he stared at each of them unable to believe what was happening. Dropping to his knees, struggling but still alive Jon watched as the final brother stepped forward revealing himself to be Olly; tears in his eyes as he approached Jon.
"Olly," Jon breathed staring at the boy, he had been hard on him after the battle against the wildings when Olly had killed Ygritte but Jon had forgiven him for that. Olly stabbed Jon in the stomach, the words 'for the watch' falling from his lips as he stepped back away from the man that he had looked up to when he had come here.
Jon stayed on his knees before falling backwards into the snow, the brothers walking away from him as he laid there on the ground with no expression on his face. A puddle of blood spreads around him in the snow as the sound of Ghost howling into the night could be heard and Jon stared at the sky unseeing.
