A Power Ranger Fanfic
1. Prelude
Darkness surrounded me as I walked forward. It was as if I had just been dropped in a bottle of ink, not a spot of light to be found for miles. As I came to a stop, I could feel the earth give a little under my feet. Closing my eyes, I thought about the sand under my feet. I could hear the sounds of the ocean shore, a distant call of a dolphin skipping through the dark waves, and a boat calling out to another. The sea salt was in the air as the light wind moved my hair around my face.
It sounded like waves crashing against a sandy shoreline, that ebbing whooshing sound that made goose bumps cover the entire surface of your skin. For a brief moment, I could almost believe that I was standing on the shores of the Californian coast, a place I had grown up. But then it grew louder, the waves transforming into something else. Something more uniform. It built, louder and louder. A crescendo of noise washed over me like a tsunami, almost knocking me off my feet. There's something in the noise I can pick out. It's calling out, saying something over and over in a chant.
"Kimberly. Kimberly. Kimberly."
My name. The noise is chanting my name. I opened my eyes and I looked around, staring out into the dark ocean that roared in front of me. Only, it's not an ocean. Right before my very eyes, it transformed into a sea of people. And under my feet, the soft and squishy sand gives way to that of the hard ground of a stage. The moonlight that had shone down on me before brightens, filled in with the bright and colorful beams of lights that direct their bulbs in my direction. In that sea of people, I can just make out faces that are all looking up to me with their arms stretched out towards me. I couldn't pinpoint a voice with the faces, the sound of them all mixing together in a chorus that made the ground rumble and my chest vibrate with its intensity.
In front of me was my passion. In front of me was what three years of blood, sweat, and tears helped me achieve. All the people standing and jumping up and down in front of me were here, after standing in line for hours, just to see me. Even with the thundering noise in my chest, I could still feel my heart. It was pounding, matching the beat of a drumline. The noise reached a high peak and it became to the point where it all just washed away, leaving me with my thoughts as I gazed around. The image of a little girl, sitting in front of her bathroom mirror with a brush in her hand while she sang came to mind while unshed tears came to the corner of my eyes. The dreams I had been afraid to speak out loud for the longest time were staring me in the face as I brought the microphone to my lips.
"Y'all ready to have some fun tonight?" I asked, smiling out at the crowd. It erupted in a deafening cheer as 20,000 people jumped to their feet.
I knew at that moment that I had officially made it.
