Detective Fedorov: "Start from the beginning Mr. Belinsky."

Mr. Belinsky: "Alright. I was making a delivery from Naryan-Mar to Usinsk, making an all-night drive. I was taking my usual route through the forest road when I heard something awful in the wind. I've gone up and down these routes plenty of times, and I've never fallen tired on my night runs. This sound was like thunder from hell."

Detective Fedorov: "What made you certain it wasn't the wind? The weather forecast reported a snowstorm in that area."

Mr. Belinsky: "Because I saw it! When I cleared the forest and was driving across the plains, it appeared. It was a monster as huge as a mountain, enormous even though it must've been a mile or two away! I thought I was hallucinating, but then I felt it, like an earthquake. The behemoth was on the move, one massive step after another! I was scared that it saw the lights of my truck, so I drove faster!"

Detective Fedorov: "Could you describe this creature for us?"

Mr. Belinsky: "It looked like an elephant, but far too huge and covered in thick hair. The horns on the top of its head seemed to draw in lightning like a rod, illuminating its head enough for me to get a better look at it. The tusks must have been a hundred- no two-hundred feet long! Huge and curved! I saw its trunk wrap around the spruce trees and it gobbled them up into its mouth. The last I saw of it was in my side view mirrors. I heard it bellow, loud enough to shake all the snow off the trees."

Detective Fedorov: "Right, right. Thank you for your time."

Mr. Belinsky: "You don't believe me do you?"

Detective Fedorov: "Sir, we will investigate this matter. Let the police handle this. You are free to go."

H.E.A.T. Headquarters Security Camera Footage Transcript

The H.E.A.T. team is gathered around Nick Tatopoulos, who is lying bedridden with a stuffy nose. Kori is present as well, leaning onto the foot end of the bed watching him.

Elsie Chapman: "No missions for you, wormy. You're staying in bed today."

Nick Tatopoulos: "I can't. Not for a case this big. How are you going to handle it without me to bring Godzilla along?"

Monique Dupre: "You're in no condition to travel. You will only slow us down."

Nick Tatopoulos: "Alright. Craven, I told you once before that you're in charge when I'm not around. You'll handle this."

Mendel Craven: "Me? But I thought you were making a joke! I'm not a leader like you!"

Nick Tatopoulos: "No, I wasn't joking that day." Nick blows his nose into a tissue before continuing. "You've really come into your own these past few months, I believe in you."

Mendel Craven: "I'll try, Nick."

The group starts filing out of the bedroom as Kori curls up next to Nick. Nick rubs the lizard's head as the two of them rest.

Randy Hernandez: "Get well soon, Jefe. We'll remember to buy you a souvenir. Maybe one of those funny little nesting dolls."

Camera H-7 records the Heat-Seeker leaving the dock. Godzilla then appears, sniffing his nose in the direction of the leaving boat before turning his head around to the building. Peeking through the window, he spies Nick and Kori sleeping in the room and mewls. Godzilla snorts at the glass misting it for a few seconds. The mutant lizard looks back and forth between the window and the sea before moving out of frame.

H.E.A.T. Copter Radio Communication Transcript

Mendel Craven: The creature was last seen over this stretch of forest. Local reports described it as a giant mammoth. Elsie, what can you tell us?

Elsie Chapman: Well, Siberia was certainly part of the wooly mammoth's home range. But the last mammoths died out on a remote island 4000 years ago. If this is another prehistoric relic, we'll have to find out how and why it's only appearing now.

Mendel Craven: Since you probably failed history class in high school, Randy, that means they were still around while the Egyptians were building their pyramids.

Randy Hernandez: Hey, I got a B minus! Gimme a little more credit here. pause Down there! Old Dumbo's been through here!

Elsie Chapman: Those footprints are wider than a house! We're dealing with something truly massive here. Something bigger than Godzilla.

Randy Hernandez: This trail of destruction stretches for miles! Somebody must've spotted it by now!

Mendel Craven: Areas like this are sparsely-populated. This creature's chances of staying out of sight might be more likely than we thought. Monique, we'll land in the trail, spread out and search for any traces it left behind.

N.I.G.E.L. Black Box
Audio-Visual Data Recording

July 25

N.I.G.E.L. scans the edge of the forest ahead of the team. While the front cameras guide the robot forward towards the intact trees and bushes, the rear cameras keep an eye on the team.

N.I.G.E.L.: "Detecting trace amounts of radiation 9.1 meters ahead. Recommend maintain position. Da! Boris will handle this!"

Mendel Craven: "Randy, is that yours?"

Randy Hernandez: "What? I didn't do that. That was one of the ones Dr. Ifukube added."

Mendel groans off-camera. N.I.G.E.L. moves further ahead as the team stays put. He picks up a giant strand of hair.

N.I.G.E.L.: Hair sample acquired. Analyzing. Genetic material consistent with species Mammuthus primigenius. Motion sensors detecting movement meters southeast, and closing.

Monique Dupre: "Enough! We are not alone!"

Monique and Randy ready their laser rifles and take aim, positioning themselves in front of Elsie and Mendel.

N.I.G.E.L.: Multiple organic signatures closing in. Radiation source approaching. Seven meters. Six meters.

Mendel Craven: N.I.G.E.L., get away from there!

Out of the forest emerges a horde of giant mutant invertebrates as the robot moves backward. Three distinct types were visible. The smallest were six-legged pale insects with long bodies, roughly five feet high.. Slightly bigger than them were the bipedal brown bugs with long hind legs and covered in segmented plates with backward-pointing spikes. The largest were bulbous egg-shaped eight-legged creatures with large shield-like plates on their backs, ten feet wide. They were clearly of different species, yet converged upon the team as a swarm.

Randy Hernandez: "Woah! I thought we were hunting for a mammoth, not playing pest control! What gives?!"

Elsie Chapman: Lice, fleas and ticks! Whatever mutated the mammoth must've also mutated the parasites that were living on its body!

Randy Hernandez: "Oh gross!"

Mendel Craven: "Is it a bad time to mention that I'm allergic to all three?"

Monique and Randy begin shooting at the mutant swarm to keep them back. The laser shots bounced off of the shield-like plates of the ticks, but they were able to shoot down the lice and fleas. The fleas start closing in with their leaps.

Monique Dupre: "There are too many of them!"

Mendel Craven: "Aaaghh! Back to the chopper! Let's get out of here!"

The team scrambles back to the H.E.A.T. Copter as Monique provides cover fire. Mendel starts up the engine and Monique hops in. N.I.G.E.L. is the last to enter and they take off swiftly. As they ascend, the mutant fleas try to leap after them. One manages to cling onto the side of the helicopter, shaking the craft as it tries to get in. Elsie screams as Monique takes the controls to keep the H.E.A.T. Copter steady.

Randy Hernandez: "Get off!"

Mendel leaves the co-pilot's chair and grabs one of the laser rifles and opens the door, causing the mutant flea to scramble. Mendel shoots the insect's clinging leg and cuts it off, causing the creature to fall. More of the mutant fleas shoot through the air after them, but Mendel takes a potshot before shutting the door, the leg landing on the floor and twitching. N.I.G.E.L. grabs the leg while Monique gets clear of the leaping fleas.

Elsie Chapman: "Thanks, Mendel."

Randy Hernandez: "Yeah, thanks doc!"

Monique Dupre: "This infestation would be spreading wherever the creature has passed. We cannot take on an epidemic this large."

Randy Hernandez: "And that's just the hairbugs! What are we gonna do about the mammoth when we find it? Let's face it, the G-Man is not gonna be having our backs for this one."

Mendel Craven: We'll just have to focus on what we can do. Elsie, focus your efforts on the parasites first. They have to be weak to something. Randy, locate the mammoth. Monique, we need to make contact with the Russian military. We're gonna need their help.

Fast-forward to nine hours later. The H.E.A.T. team, with the aid of the Russian Armed Forces, are engaging the mutant mammoth near the mouth of the Pechora river. N.I.G.E.L. is capturing remote footage using his mobile hover drones while he and the team watch from a distant hillock. Artillery fire bombards the angry mammoth while ground forces engage the mutant parasites that fall from its body.

Elsie Chapman: "Colonel, the chemical lures are complete. I suggest you deploy it by air to cover a large area. It'll take some time before all the swarms are drawn to the target zone.

Col. Agonskaya: "Very well, Doctor Chapman. I have battle groups stationed and ready to hold the line." The colonel turns away and talks into his cellular phone in Russian "Drive it towards the sea!"

Randy Hernandez: I don't know about you, Colonel, but it's heading this way!

They watch as the mammoth charges through the din of shelling, each footstep making the ground shake like a small earthquake. The creature sweeps its tusks on the line of retreating artillery vehicles and it rears up to crush the forward base camp and everyone in it. A loud familiar roar catches the enraged beast's attention. The cameras turn to the sound and see Godzilla charging through the countryside towards the mammoth. The reptile pounces and tackles the behemoth, only to make it budge several feet as the creature's mass exceeded even Godzilla's.

Randy Hernandez: "Yes! The G-Man !"

Monique Dupre: "But what is he doing here?"

Elsie Chapman: "Guess even he couldn't ignore Ivan the Terrible's ruckus!"

The mutant mammoth threatens to sweep the camp away, but Godzilla grabs its huge curved tusks and manages to wrestle with the beast. Godzilla tries to hold his ground but is being pushed back, so he claws at the creature's face, raking at its eyes. As the mammoth reels back in pain, Godzilla tries to lunge from the side and bite the neck, but the thick fur softens the blow. Irritated, he blasts the mammoth with a surge of his atomic breath. Some of the thick fur is singed, but the mutation endures and rushes Godzilla, sending him flying and crashing onto the trees. As Godzilla recovers, everyone rushes to the vehicles to leave. The atomic flames flush out more of the mammoth's parasites to leap off its body, attacking some of the personnel as they flee to their vehicles.

Col. Agonskaya: Translated from Russian "Evacuate now! We have two monsters! I repeat: two monsters!"

Mendel Craven: "Colonel, you have to believe me when I tell you that Godzilla is here to help us!"

Col. Agonskaya: "We thought Godzilla was under Doctor Tatopoulos' control?"

Mendel Craven: "Well, we kinda thought that too. But please do not fire on Godzilla! We need all the help we can get!"

Col. Agonskaya: "Does he not listen to Doctor Tatopoulos only? How do you expect to handle him?"

Elsie Chapman: "Yeah Mendel, how are we going to handle Godzilla?"

Before the conversation could continue, the ground shakes as the mammoth makes an earthquake-like stomp with its hoof. Colonel Agonskaya and a subordinate holler to H.E.A.T. and they all board one of transport trucks. The colonel and the subordinate sit in the cab, while H.E.A.T. leaps into the rear carriage, stowing N.I.G.E.L. on board with them. They escape just as the mammoth demolishes the camp. N.I.G.E.L. continues to use his remote aerial drones to capture footage of Godzilla lunging in again and clambering onto the mammoth's back, out of reach of the trunk. As Godzilla incinerates the mammoth again, the beast flails and starts charging in the other direction towards the coast.

Mendel Craven: "We need to get back to the Heat-Seeker. I have the Sonic Signaler down in the ship's lab. It's the closest thing we have to actually communicating with Godzilla."

Randy Hernandez: "Doc we're not even sure that gizmo worked on Godzilla the last time!"

Mendel Craven: "If you have a better idea Randy, I'm all ears!"

Skip forward to thirteen minutes later. The H.E.A.T. Team has returned to the Heat-Seeker via helicopter, with the Colonel onboard with them. While the military officer is talking on his phone to his subordinates, Craven walks on deck with the Sonic Signaler, the team following behind him.

Mendel Craven: "No time for a test!"

Mendel sends out a command to Godzilla to breathe fire. Godzilla pauses from his attack momentarily, long enough for the mammoth to shake the reptile off its back. Godzilla lands on his feet and breathes fire at the mammoth once again, driving it into the water.

Mendel Craven: "Hey, I think it worked!"

Col. Agonskaya: "I am authorized to deploy our most powerful weapons against the beast. I suggest you do your best to keep your monster out of the blast radius."

Elsie Chapman: "A nuke?! Colonel with all due respect, it was a nuclear weapon that created that mammoth in the first place."

Col. Agonskaya: "What are you talking about?"

Elsie Chapman: "According to our investigation, we believe the mammoth was trapped in a glacier on Severny Island, only to be freed and mutated by your nuclear tests. Another weapon might only empower it at this point!"

Col. Agonskaya: "That may be so, but that is even more reason for us to use more...efficient weapons. I assure you doctor, this weapon is decidedly non-nuclear."

Elsie Chapman: "What do you mean?"

Monique Dupre: "He means to unleash an experimental weapon on the creature!"

Col. Agonskaya: "The missile will hit the target in 19 seconds. Understand that I am doing this to protect my country. Do whatever you must to protect your abomination."

Randy Hernandez: "We gotta get the G-Man outta there!"

Randy and Elsie run to the deck to shout at Godzilla, hoping to get his attention. Godzilla remains occupied, pinned under the mammoth's foot trying not to get crushed. Some of the parasites fall on Godzilla and are trying to pierce his skin.

Mendel Craven: Monique, which direction is the missile coming from?

Monique Dupre: Monique looks through her binoculars "West-southwest!"

Mendel types commands into his Sonic Signaler. A moment later, Godzilla's growling ceases and he fires a gout of atomic fire upwards, burning the mammoth's trunk. It backs off and he escapes from the crushing hoof. Godzilla sweeps the parasites off of him as he steps backward. Mendel frantically sends another command with the Signaler. Godzilla seems to hesitate, looking back and forth between the mammoth and the Heat-Seeker, before diving into the sea. The missile hits the mammoth square on its back. Everyone looks in awe as the massive mutation slowly becomes encased in a strange pink crystalline substance. The mammoth growls as it stumbles into the water. Soon it is totally engulfed and frozen solid. Godzilla roars in victory before turning away. Randy and Elsie cheer, while Mendel breathes a heavy sigh of relief and falls to the ground with trembling knees. Monique helps him to his feet.

Randy Hernandez: "Alright Doctor C! You saved Godzilla's lizard keister!"

Monique Dupre: "Tres bien, doctor."

Elsie Chapman: Elsie looks at the crystallized mammoth. "That weapon-"

Col. Agonskaya: "Is none of your concern, American. Your business here is done. We will see to the extermination of the remaining parasites ourselves. The Motherland thanks you for your assistance. Please take your Godzilla with you when you leave."

The colonel leaves via boat to return to his forces. Then Godzilla surfaces right in front of the Heat-Seeker's deck, rocking the ship and back and splashing the team with water. He noticeably points his snout towards the group, who are a little apprehensive at him. Mendel is noticeably terrified as he locks eyes with Godzilla.

Mendel Craven: Please don't eat me!

Godzilla snorts and licks the whole team at once with his tongue, much to the disgust of the group. Godzilla proceeds to devour N.I.G.E.L.. The main camera is heavily damaged and loses connection, capturing only several shots of the inside of the monster's mouth before going offline. The remaining footage is captured from N.I.G.E.L's aerial drone, which flies close to Godzilla as he chews the robot up and spits him back onto the deck. Randy, Elsie and Monique laugh as Godzilla swims away.

Mendel Craven: "Oh, N.I.G.E.L.!"

End of footage

A/N:

Thought I'd put it here now to give a sense of time passing between SCALE's first attack on the 4th of July and their next big hit, which you will see next.

The basic idea was meant to be a mammoth in suspended animation mutated by the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated. To any readers who play Fate/Grand Order, I hope you enjoyed the reference to a certain Rider-class Servant. Early on I was thinking that this creature would have been so strong that Godzilla would have had help from either ICE or Komodithrax, but ultimately that first idea ended up being given to Escargantua. As for the other idea well...

The chapter felt really dull to finish without something else to spice things up, which is where the idea of taking Nick out of the picture came in. I love the show and rewatching it multiple times really opens my eyes to the slow chadification of Mendel Craven throughout the series. Consider this chapter as me doing my due diligence of pushing him forward a little more, building on Nick's statement that Mendel would be in charge when he's not around. There's gonna be more time for Craven to shine soon because of what's coming next.

Feel free to speculate on the Russians' mysterious crystal weapon.
