A shoutout to Graymar1 who gave me the idea of this one.
The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the pristine beaches of New Bellard. The rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore provided a stark contrast to the tense atmosphere that enveloped the three figures standing on landing pad near the beach.
Superman, his blue eyes scanning the horizon, let out a deep sigh. "It's beautiful here," he murmured, almost to himself. "It's hard to believe that such a place could be the epicenter of so much global tension."
Beside him, Batman's gaze was fixed on the surrounding area, always watchful for potential danger. "It's not the place, Clark," he replied, his voice low and gravelly. "It's the idea behind it. A nation of metahumans, isolated from the rest of the world. It's a powder keg waiting to explode."
Wonder Woman, her regal posture undiminished even in this casual setting, nodded in agreement. "People fear what they don't understand. And a nation where every citizen possesses powers beyond comprehension? It's a concept that many find hard to swallow."
Superman turned to face his companions, his expression earnest. "Guardian means well. I truly believe that. But the world sees New Bellard as a threat, not a sanctuary."
Batman's eyes met Superman's. "Intentions don't always translate to outcomes, Clark. Guardian might have created this place as a haven, but to the outside world, it's a fortress. A stronghold of metahumans who could, if they chose to, dominate any nation they wished."
Diana placed a comforting hand on Superman's shoulder. "We're here to bridge that gap, to foster understanding. But we must also be prepared for the possibility that not everyone will see it that way."
The trio sat in contemplative silence, the weight of their mission pressing heavily upon them.
As the last rays of the sun disappeared, a brilliant streak of silver cut through the twilight sky. Descending gracefully was a woman with iridescent wings that shimmered like a dragonfly's. Her hair, a cascade of silver, flowed behind her, and her eyes sparkled with an otherworldly light.
She landed softly on the sand before the Trinity, her wings folding neatly behind her. "Greetings, esteemed guests," she began, her voice melodious. "I am Lysandra, emissary of New Bellard. The Supreme Leader, Guardian, will see you now."
Superman stood, nodding respectfully. "Thank you, Lysandra. We appreciate the audience."
As they began their journey towards the heart of New Bellard, the island's wonders unfolded before them. Lush gardens floated in mid-air, supported by metahumans with elemental powers. Children raced on the streets, some running at blinding speeds, while others levitated, laughing joyfully. A young man manipulated water from a fountain, crafting intricate sculptures that danced and twirled, while another played a haunting melody, drawing ethereal notes from thin air.
Batman, ever the observer, noted the harmony with which the metahumans used their powers. "It's like a symphony," he remarked, a rare note of wonder in his voice. "Every individual playing their part, contributing to the whole."
Wonder Woman smiled, her eyes taking in the sights. "It's a testament to what can be achieved when people are free to be themselves, without fear or prejudice."
Lysandra led them through a grand boulevard lined with statues of metahumans, each one commemorating a hero of New Bellard. The path culminated in a magnificent building, its architecture a blend of ancient and modern. Towering pillars of marble stood alongside walls of shimmering crystal, and the emblem of New Bellard—a phoenix rising—was emblazoned on the entrance.
"This is the Hall of Unity," Lysandra announced, "the heart of our government and the symbol of our shared vision."
As they entered the building, the grandeur of its interior took their breath away. The vast hall was illuminated by floating orbs of light, and a mosaic on the floor depicted the history of New Bellard, from its founding to its present.
At the far end of the hall, seated on a throne of intertwined branches and stone, was Guardian. His presence was commanding, and his eyes held the wisdom of someone who had seen much and borne great responsibility.
"Welcome, Trinity," he intoned, his voice echoing through the hall. "I've been expecting you."
The heroes approached, ready to begin what would be one of their most crucial dialogues. The fate of New Bellard, and perhaps the world, hung in the balance.
Guardian's gaze settled on each member of the Trinity, assessing, weighing. "I've heard the whispers of the world," he began, his voice deep and resonant. "They see us as a threat, an anomaly. But all we've sought is peace."
Superman stepped forward, his posture open and non-threatening. "Guardian, we understand your intentions. This haven you've created is remarkable. But the world outside sees a concentration of power, and that breeds fear."
Guardian's eyes narrowed slightly. "Fear born out of ignorance. They don't understand us, so they label us as a threat."
Batman, ever the pragmatist, interjected, "It's not just about understanding. It's about balance. The world fears what New Bellard could do if it chose to. And that fear can lead to actions, actions that could harm both sides."
Wonder Woman, her voice filled with empathy, added, "We've come as ambassadors, Guardian. We want to bridge the gap, to foster dialogue between New Bellard and the world. To show them the beauty and harmony of this place, and to help them see that coexistence is possible."
Guardian leaned back, his expression contemplative. "You speak of dialogue and understanding, but the world has a history of persecuting what it doesn't comprehend. How can we trust that this won't be another chapter in that history?"
The atmosphere in the Hall of Unity grew palpable as the Trinity stood before Guardian. Superman took the lead, his voice firm yet diplomatic. "Guardian, we understand the vision you have for New Bellard. A sanctuary for metahumans, free from persecution and fear. But the world is growing anxious. The sudden migration of thousands of metahumans to this island has caused significant geopolitical tensions."
Batman added, "Especially with China. They've lodged formal complaints about the 'abduction' of their citizens. The world is on edge, and we're trying to prevent an all-out conflict."
Guardian leaned forward, his gaze intense. "Every metahuman who has come to New Bellard has done so of their own free will. They seek refuge, a place where they can be themselves without being weaponized or imprisoned."
Wonder Woman, ever the diplomat, interjected, "We are not here to accuse, but to understand and mediate. The world needs to see that New Bellard is not a threat. And for that, we need transparency."
Guardian sighed, the weight of his responsibility evident. "When a metahuman is discovered in China, they are given a choice – to serve the state or face imprisonment. The Great Ten, their elite metahuman force, ensures compliance. Those who resist are sent to camps, forced into submission. I've seen it, Diana. Young men and women, with gifts beyond imagination, broken and chained."
Superman's expression softened. "We're aware of the challenges metahumans face globally. But taking them without the knowledge or consent of their home countries is causing unrest. We need to find a middle ground."
Guardian stood, his stature imposing. "I will not stand by while my people are oppressed. But I also do not seek conflict. New Bellard is a beacon of hope, not a fortress of war."
Batman, ever the strategist, proposed, "What if we establish a protocol? A system where metahumans who wish to migrate to New Bellard can do so, but with the knowledge and, if possible, the consent of their home countries?"
Guardian considered this, "A transparent process might ease tensions. But the safety and freedom of metahumans will always be my priority."
Wonder Woman nodded, "And it should be. But diplomacy can be a powerful tool. Let us be that bridge between New Bellard and the world. Let's show them that coexistence is possible."
Guardian looked at each member of the Trinity, seeing the sincerity in their eyes. "Very well. We will try it your way. But know this – I will do whatever it takes to protect my people."
The heroes understood the gravity of his words. The path ahead would be challenging, but the first step towards understanding had been taken. The fate of New Bellard and its relationship with the world now rested on the delicate balance of diplomacy and trust.
Guardian's gaze swept over the Trinity, his eyes hardening with resolve. "While I appreciate your efforts at diplomacy, let me make one thing abundantly clear: New Bellard stands as a beacon of hope for metahumans everywhere. If any nation threatens, persecutes, or harms metahumans, I will not hesitate to intervene, even if it means using force."
Superman met Guardian's gaze, his own eyes reflecting the weight of his responsibilities. "Guardian, we understand your commitment to your people. But violence begets violence. If you retaliate, it could lead to a global conflict, endangering not just metahumans but all of humanity."
Guardian's voice was steely. "For too long, metahumans have been hunted, used, and discarded. I've seen children torn from their families, individuals experimented on, and many forced into roles they never asked for. If nations cannot treat metahumans with the respect and dignity they deserve, they will face the consequences."
Batman, ever the pragmatist, interjected, "Guardian, we're not asking you to turn a blind eye to injustice. But there are ways to address these issues without resorting to violence. We can work together, gather evidence, and expose these atrocities to the world. The court of public opinion can be a powerful ally."
Guardian looked thoughtful for a moment. "I've tried peaceful means, Batman. Protests, negotiations, even appeals to international courts. But the plight of metahumans is often ignored or swept under the rug."
Wonder Woman stepped forward, her voice filled with conviction. "Then let us amplify that voice. Together, we can shine a light on these injustices. But we must also show the world that New Bellard is about unity and understanding, not aggression."
Guardian sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I will always prioritize the safety and well-being of metahumans. But I hear your concerns. Let's try this your way, for now. However, if I see that diplomacy fails to protect my people, I will do what I must."
The Trinity nodded in understanding.
As the conversation continued, Superman broached another topic. "Guardian, the United States has proposed a joint scientific research initiative with New Bellard. They believe that by studying the unique genetic makeup of metahumans here, we might find ways to better understand and harness these abilities for the betterment of all."
Guardian's expression darkened immediately. "Joint research? You mean a front to gather intelligence on us. I've seen how these 'research initiatives' work. They're nothing more than thinly veiled attempts to study, control, and weaponize metahuman abilities."
Batman, ever the detective, tried to gauge Guardian's reaction. "You seem to have strong feelings about this. Has there been a precedent?"
Guardian's voice was cold. "The Suicide Squad. They came here under the guise of a diplomatic mission, but their true intent was espionage and, if necessary, neutralization of what they deemed 'threats'. They underestimated us."
Wonder Woman's eyes widened in surprise. "The Suicide Squad? Here? We weren't aware."
Superman's face was a mask of concern. "Guardian, I assure you, we had no knowledge of this. The Squad operates in the shadows, often without the full oversight of the government."
Guardian leaned forward, his voice dripping with menace. "Let this be a warning. If they, or any other covert operatives, set foot on New Bellard with ill intent, the consequences will be dire. I will protect my people at all costs."
Batman's eyes narrowed. "We need to investigate this. The Suicide Squad's involvement changes things."
Wonder Woman nodded in agreement. "It's clear there are forces at play here that even we aren't fully aware of. Guardian, we promise to get to the bottom of this."
Guardian looked at each of them, his gaze unwavering. "See that you do. New Bellard is a sanctuary, not a battleground. But if pushed, we will defend ourselves."
The revelation had added another layer of complexity to an already delicate situation. The Trinity realized that navigating the intricacies of global politics and covert operations would be essential in ensuring peace between New Bellard and the world. The stakes had never been higher.
Guardian's stern demeanor softened, and he looked at the Trinity with a mix of weariness and appreciation. "I apologize for my earlier hostility. It's been a challenging journey, and I've grown wary of outsiders. But I recognize your genuine intentions. You three have always stood for justice and peace, even when the world didn't understand or appreciate your sacrifices."
He turned to Batman, his gaze thoughtful. "I've kept a close eye on the world beyond these shores. Your efforts in Gotham, and indeed the world, have not gone unnoticed. You've always fought for those who couldn't fight for themselves, often at great personal cost."
Batman, usually stoic and reserved, was taken aback. It was rare for him to receive such open acknowledgment, especially from someone as influential as Guardian. "Thank you," he replied, his voice betraying a hint of emotion. "It's... not often that I hear such words.
Superman and Wonder Woman exchanged knowing glances. They had been by Batman's side for countless battles and knew the toll it took on him. To see their friend acknowledged in this way warmed their hearts.
Guardian smiled, a genuine, warm smile. "Now, before I give you a tour of our beautiful island, I have some news that might interest Superman."
Superman raised an eyebrow, curious. "Oh?"
Guardian's smile widened. "A few months ago, we discovered a spaceship that had crash-landed on the outskirts of our territory. Inside, we found a young Kryptonian girl. She's been with us, learning to harness her powers and adjust to this new world."
Superman's heart raced, hope and disbelief warring within him. "You found one of my people?"
Guardian nodded. "Her name is Kara. She goes by Supergirl now. She's eager to meet you."
The weight of the revelation hit Superman like a tidal wave. The thought of reuniting with a piece of his lost home, with family, was overwhelming. Wonder Woman placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, her eyes filled with empathy.
Batman, ever the protector, asked, "Is she alright? Has she been treated well?"
Guardian chuckled. "She's more than alright. She's thriving. And she's been a great help in training some of our younger metahumans."
Superman's voice was thick with emotion. "I can't thank you enough for this, Guardian."
"Follow me to the back."
The massive back doors of the Hall of Unity opened, revealing a sprawling courtyard bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. Verdant gardens, bubbling fountains, and serene pathways created an atmosphere of tranquility. But what caught Superman's attention was the figure standing in the center of the courtyard.
A young woman with raven-black hair and piercing blue eyes, dressed in a blue and red costume reminiscent of his own, stood waiting. Her posture was confident, but there was a hint of nervous anticipation in her gaze.
Guardian stepped forward, gesturing towards her. "Clark, meet Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. She's been with us for several weeks, learning about this world, its history, and, of course, about you. She's also been training, mastering her powers."
Superman's eyes never left the young woman. Memories of Krypton, of family and a life lost, flooded his mind. He took a hesitant step forward, his voice filled with emotion. "Kara?"
She nodded, her eyes glistening with tears. "Kal? Is it really you?"
In an instant, the distance between them vanished as they rushed towards each other, embracing tightly. The weight of years of separation, of loneliness and longing, melted away in that moment. They were family, the last remnants of a lost world, reunited against all odds.
Wonder Woman and Batman watched the reunion, their faces reflecting a mix of happiness for their friend and the gravity of the moment. Batman, ever the observer, whispered to Wonder Woman, "It's not often we see Clark like this."
Diana nodded, her eyes soft. "Family has a way of breaking down even the strongest of walls."
Guardian, observing the scene, felt a pang of satisfaction. Despite the challenges and tensions, moments like these made his mission worthwhile. "Welcome to New Bellard, Supergirl," he murmured to himself, "a place of new beginnings."
The courtyard, with its beauty and serenity, bore witness to a reunion that transcended time and space, a testament to the enduring power of family and love.
While Superman and Supergirl were engrossed in their reunion, Wonder Woman approached Guardian, curiosity evident in her eyes. "Guardian, I've heard whispers of male Amazons here in New Bellard. Is there any truth to these rumors?"
For a fleeting moment, a look of fury and shock crossed Guardian's face. It was gone in an instant, but not before Batman, with his keen observational skills, took note.
Guardian took a deep breath, choosing his words carefully. "Yes, Diana, the rumors are true. They are known as the Sons of Themyscira."
Wonder Woman's eyes widened in surprise. "Male Amazons? I've never heard of such a thing. Can I meet them?"
Guardian hesitated, his gaze unwavering. "I'm afraid that won't be possible. The Sons of Themyscira have made it clear they have no desire to meet you."
Confusion clouded Wonder Woman's features. "Why? I don't understand."
Guardian's voice was heavy with sorrow. "Long ago, the Sons of Themyscira coexisted with the Amazons on the same island. But a tragic event led to their annihilation at the hands of the Amazons."
Wonder Woman staggered back, horror etched on her face. "That can't be true! The Amazons are a peaceful people, dedicated to love and understanding."
Guardian's gaze was sympathetic yet firm. "The Sons are clear on the matter, Diana. Their history speaks of betrayal and bloodshed. They remember."
Batman, who had been silently observing the exchange, stepped forward. "Guardian, history is often muddled with time. Memories can be distorted; truths can be lost."
Guardian nodded. "Perhaps, but the pain and anger of the Sons are very real. They've found solace and purpose here in New Bellard, away from the shadows of their past."
Wonder Woman, her heart heavy with the weight of this revelation, whispered, "I need to know more. I need to understand."
Guardian placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "In time, perhaps the wounds will heal, and bridges can be built. But for now, the sons need their space."
Batman, ever the detective, filed away the information, sensing that there was more to this story than met the eye.
Wonder Woman's mind raced as she processed Guardian's words. The Amazons, her sisters, were while flawed always tried to be paragons of virtue and peace. The idea that they could commit such an atrocity was inconceivable. Yet, Guardian's conviction and the evident pain of the Sons of Themyscira couldn't be ignored.
She remembered the tales of old, the stories of the Amazons' early days, and the challenges they faced. But never had there been mention of male counterparts, let alone a conflict of such magnitude. Could it be that this dark chapter was deliberately erased from their history? Or was it a misunderstanding, a distortion of events lost to time?
Diana felt a deep sense of responsibility. If there was any truth to Guardian's claims, she needed to uncover it, not just for herself but for the legacy of Themyscira. She had always believed in the power of truth, and now, more than ever, she needed to seek it out.
Beside her, Batman's thoughts were analytical, always probing for the deeper layers beneath the surface. He had seen firsthand how history could be manipulated, how truths could be twisted to fit particular narratives. The Dark Knight knew that every story had multiple facets, and the truth often lay somewhere in between.
Guardian's fleeting expression of fury was not lost on him. It hinted at a personal stake, a deeper involvement. What was Guardian's connection to the Sons of Themyscira? And why was he so protective of them?
Batman also considered the strategic implications. If the Sons held a grudge against the Amazons, it could have ramifications beyond New Bellard. Such a division could be exploited by external forces, leading to further conflict.
He glanced at Diana, noting the turmoil in her eyes. They had faced countless challenges together, and he knew she would seek the truth, no matter how painful. And he would be there, as always, to support and aid her in her quest.
The revelations of the day weighed heavily on the Trinity. As the sun set on New Bellard, casting long shadows across the island, the heroes were reminded that the path to understanding and peace was often fraught with obstacles and painful truths. But together, they were determined to face them head-on. They explored the island and saw much then left with hope in their hearts for a brighter future.
o-o-o-o-o
The Hall of Unity was silent, save for the echoing footsteps of Guardian and Anastasios. The grandeur of the hall seemed to amplify the tension between the two men.
Anastasios's voice was sharp, filled with years of pent-up anger and pain. "With Wonder Woman's knowledge, it's only a matter of time before the Amazons come looking for us. We should enact 'New Blood' now!"
Guardian, ever the strategist, responded with measured calmness. "Rushing into action is what they'd expect. We've been preparing for this moment for millennia. We stick to the plan, Anastasios, but we'll accelerate our timeline."
Anastasios's eyes, a deep shade of blue reminiscent of the Aegean Sea, flashed with frustration. "Do you remember, Guardian? Do you remember the screams, the fire, the desperation as we ran for our lives?"
Guardian's face hardened, his eyes distant, lost in memories of a time long past. "Every day, every moment, I'm haunted by those memories. I will never forget."
The weight of their shared history hung heavily between them. The Sons of Themyscira, once a thriving community, had been reduced to mere whispers in the annals of history, their existence almost obliterated by the very people they once called kin.
Anastasios took a deep breath, his voice softening. "We've rebuilt, grown stronger, and waited for our moment. I just want to ensure that our sacrifices, our pain, wasn't in vain."
Guardian placed a reassuring hand on Anastasios's shoulder. "We've been patient for three thousand years. A little longer won't hurt. When the time is right, the Amazons will pay for their transgressions. I promise you that."
The two men stood facing each other, bound by a shared past and a singular purpose. As Anastasios departed, Guardian's gaze lingered on the horizon, his thoughts dark and resolute.
In the quiet solitude of the hall, Guardian whispered to himself, "Paradise Island will fall, and from its ashes, a new era will rise."
The stage was set, and the wheels of destiny were in motion. The coming storm was inevitable, and its outcome uncertain.
The Sons of Themyscira were the male amazons who were abandoned at birth by the Amazons. it was actually part of an illusion created to keep wonder woman away from Paradise Island. It took place in the new 52 and is no longer valid but it was a neat concept that I felt made a great villain SI story.
