Day off
Donna never asks for a day off, except for Halloween. She goes to work even when she's sick, and she knows very well that if she were to ask Harvey, using all her charms, he would make the sacrifice of surviving a day without her, but her self-demanding nature doesn't allow it. She's there every morning, ready to handle anything her boss needs.
But one morning, when she wakes up completely sweaty, feeling like her body weighs more than usual, and realizes she has a high fever, she simply knows that it won't be possible to go to work.
"Harvey, good morning. I'm sorry, but I won't be able to come in today. I feel terribly ill and have a high fever. Do you think you can survive without me for a day?"
"I'll try, Donna. But I can't promise anything. Get well soon, for yourself, and because I need you."
Harvey's day is worse than chaos. He doesn't know which meetings he has to attend; he answers the phone himself, and he even has to talk to people he has no clue about. He spends the day completely overwhelmed, more like on the brink of collapse. He no longer remembers what his life was like before Donna put it in order, and although he already knew how much she meant to him, that day confirms it. Without Donna, he wouldn't be the lawyer he is. No doubt about it.
Harvey sends her lunch for delivery, one of those vegetarian sandwiches she loves, from one of the places they usually order lunch.
"It's good to know I won't starve to death, thanks Harvey," she writes when receiving her favorite order from that shitty Thai food place for dinner.
"This is chaos without you; please eat and get better soon. I almost broke the copy machine more than once today," he replies from his office.
She giggles when she reads it. "Leave my machine alone, Harvey! I'm eating, and I already feel better. I hope I can come in tomorrow."
"Are you more worried about your machine than me?"
"But you survived, Harvey!"
"And it's been a nightmare. Please, don't get sick again. Do you need me to buy you some vitamins?"
"You're an idiot," she responds, laughing. "I'll do my best not to get sick again. See you tomorrow, okay?"
"Alright, Donna. See you tomorrow."
The next morning, Donna still doesn't feel too well, but she knows she has to go to the office before Harvey throws his entire career overboard. Upon arriving at her desk, she finds her favorite coffee, with her favorite pie and chocolate, along with a handwritten card, in her boss's terrible handwriting: "I can't function without you, please have all this energy to survive today." She chuckles and looks up to find him in his office, with a warm smile on his lips.
"Thanks," she mouths, and he winks at her.
