Darkwing Duck watched the calm night from a top a building, his cape flying behind him.
"Must you pose?", Gosalyn asked him from behind.
"It's the end of patrol, I have to finish it off with a bang!".
"By posing? Who is seeing you anyways?".
"It's about warning the criminals. A shadow hides, surveils and protects. I am the terror that flaps in the night, I am the spider that catches the fly of evil. I am, Darkwing Duck!", he exclaimed before jumping down next to her, "And I think it's time we go back to the tower".
Gosalyn nodded and followed him back to the Ratcatcher.
Back at the apartment, Drake was watching the news while Gosalyn was in her room, hopefully getting ready for bed.
He enjoyed the company while patrolling on the weekend, but he did worry at times that maybe he was being irresponsible. The sooner her grandpa returned, the better things would be.
How could he raise a teenager? He could barely keep himself alive.
Something then caught his eye. An image on the TV, "Who is this mysterious companion? And will they continue to team-up with local vigilante Darkwing Duck?".
A blurry dark image expanded. It showed Darkwing Duck on top of a building, with a small shadowy figure besides him. Gosalyn.
You couldn't really tell it was Gosalyn, but you could definitely make out the outline of a duck.
He could keep his secret identity, but Gosalyn didn't make an effort to hide who she was.
They were lucky she hadn't been identified and that the image was blurry, but they wouldn't always have this luck, they couldn't depend on it. And if they had a face to face confrontation with a villain, she would be singled out.
And if that happened…
"Night Drake", Gosalyn said before her door closed.
"Night", he managed to respond.
The next day Gosalyn got up and stretched her arms out. She stood up and walked around her room, somethings' off…
Shaking the feeling off, she left her room and went to the kitchen.
"Drake?", she asked, waiting for an answer. None came.
'He must be asleep', she shrugged, yet still felt something strange about this. It wouldn't be the first time she woke up before him, so what was different now?
Gosalyn waited for a few minutes, maybe he was sleeping in? Either way, I'm sure he would be happy if she made them some breakfast. It wouldn't hurt to do something like that once in a while.
She was almost done eating, and still, he hadn't gotten up.
Worried, but not really she just found it strange you know, she walked up to his door.
"Are you awake?", she asked after knocking.
No answer.
Gosalyn opened the door with caution and poked her head in, "Hello?". The room was empty.
Now she was starting to get slightly worried. Where was he?
A door rumbled from outside the room.
Thinking quickly, Gosalyn left Drake's room, closing the door behind her as she grabbed an umbrella next to the door and got ready.
After some jiggling the door opened and Gosalyn attacked.
Aiming for the legs, she knocked the intruder off his feet and jumped on top of him, aiming the umbrella at his head.
"What are you doing?!", she exclaimed, before having a double take.
"Wha-who-wha…It occurs to me I should've left a note", a dizzy Drake said.
Gosalyn quickly got off him, "I'm sorry. I thought you were an intruder".
"Don't worry about it", he said, standing upland picking up the box he had been carrying, "Good thinking with the umbrella there".
Gosalyn smiled awkwardly. Of course he would point out her use of defense, it was what he tried to teach her as Darkwing Duck, "Sorry about that".
"Don't apologize! Had I been an actual villain, you would've taken them by surprise in a quick and effective way. Now I don't have to worry about leaving you alone", Drake said, "Did you make something?"
Gosalyn nodded at the kitchen, "That's for you. I thought you were sleeping".
Drake set the box down on the kitchen table and got to eating, "Thank you. I appreciate your thoughtfulness".
"So, where were you? I hope not fighting a criminal without me?!", Gosalyn asked as she peeked into the box.
"Not at all, I just got some inspiration", Drake sighed as he ate.
Gosalyn picked up the fabric, trying to find shape of it, "What is this?", she looked deeper into the box, "Is that shirt mine?!".
Drake scratched the back of his head, "Sorry about that, but I needed some measurements".
"A suit? I didn't know you could sow. And design, and, did you make you Darkwing suit?".
"Years of cosplay and being in a theatre troop will prepare you for these moments. And yes, yes I did".
"So what's this for?", Gosalyn asked, even though she was sure she had figured it out already.
"I got to thinking about last night, and how I have a secret identity", he started.
"And I don't? So, I'm finally graduating to full blown superhero? Who am I? Did Darkwing ever have a partner?", she asked as she pressed the fabric against her, trying to see if it would fit her.
"Not exactly. You still have a curfew and will only work on weekends".
Gosalyn groaned but didn't object.
"As for your last question, he always worked alone in the show, which means you get to pick your own superhero name", he smiled at her. Even if the show had introduced a partner, he wasn't going to force his obsession on her.
"So, you designed this yourself?".
"Redesigning is always an option, I just got inspired and thought it would be good to have a starting point, and something in case we have to go on a mission soon"-"It's cool".
Drake was taken aback. Gosalyn thought it was cool? She wasn't a cold person, but by no mean was she an open book, and he was sure she wasn't really that impressed by him.
So her actually telling him that the suit he made for her was cool, was unexpected. A thank you maybe, but not a compliment.
"I'll go try it on", she said enthusiastically, leaving him alone.
'Am I THAT sleep deprived?', he wondered.
"Tada! Say hello to, 'Darkwing Duck's Second in Command'", she said, throwing her cape back dramatically.
"Is that your official name then?", Drake grinned. He had done a better job than he had thought at first.
She rolled her eyes, standing up straight, "Obviously it's a stand-in name".
Drake nodded, "How does it feel? Can you move in it? And most importantly, does it make you feel cool?".
"It's awesome! Maybe a few adjustments to the size, and maybe we could add a tool belt?", she said.
"Of course! I just wasn't sure with your quiver and bow, how it would, well, function I guess".
"This is great, but I think you should get some sleep. We can talk about modifications later", Gosalyn said, staying up all night takes a toll on people, even superheroes.
"That's probably for the best", Drake said, suddenly feeling the excitement and adrenaline leave his body, "What are you going to do in the meantime?".
Gosalyn watched as he stood up, "Think of a name for myself. 'Darkwing Duck's Second in Command' doesn't exactly roll off the tongue now does it?".
"May I suggest the Jade Arrow?".
"Man, you really do need sleep".
