Epilogue
Standing in the kitchen of her apartment, Sara listened to the TV as a reporter spoke about a tragedy in Slovakia. The Avengers had been sent in after a rouge A.I. and practically destroyed the city. They were calling for the Avengers to be put under government control. From her limited knowledge of Steven Rogers, Sara assumed he would never go for it. The Avengers were not for the American Government. They were meant for the world. "Mummy!" Jonathan called from the living room. "Door!" She smiled at hearing his voice. They had come a long way with her finally managing to get him cochlear implants and him having to learn to speak. "Coming!" she yelled back. She walked to the door, opening the drawer where her gun was stashed to make sure it was in easy reach. She'd only had contact with Fitz, Bobbi, and Hunter, but they didn't know where she was yet.
Opening the door, she froze when she saw who was on the other side. He was clean-shaven, wearing a dark sweater that covered his arms. He hesitantly smiled at her.
"Hey, Sara."
"I liked the beard," she remarked.
"I'll grow it back."
"Mummy! Who?"
Jonathan ran to the door, stopping when he saw Ward. Ward stared down at the almost two-year-old. He was splitting image of Ward, but Ward could see Sara in the gentleness of the boy's brown eyes.
"Hi," Ward said. He crouched down to Jonathan's height. "I'm Grant." Jonathan tilted his head to the side.
"Dad," Jonathan corrected.
"Excuse me?" Jonathan pointed at Ward than himself.
"Dad."
"Yeah. I'm your dad." Jonathan grinned, then threw himself into Ward's grasp. Ward startled, catching the boy. He looked up at Sara, who was smiling, but tears were falling down her face.
"He's smart," she said, wiping away her tears. "He's already reading."
"He's only one."
"He'll be two in a few weeks."
"Scientist," Jonathan said, pointing at himself. "Mum."
"Exactly like mum," Ward nodded.
He stepped inside, allowing Sara to close the door behind him. Ward set Jonathan down, then turned to Sara.
"I-I miss you."
"No past tense?"
"No past-tense." Sara let out a sob, then did exactly like her son, thrusting herself into Ward's arms. She wrapped her arms around him, pressing their lips together.
"Ewww!" Jonathan cried. He ran away and a moment later, Sara could hear the TV turn on. She didn't pay much attention as she wrapped her legs around Ward's waist, cupping his cheeks.
"I love you," she whispered. He let out a broken chuckle as he kissed her back.
"I love you. I'm sorry. I love you. I'm so sorry." He repeated those two sentences over and over.
And in that moment, Sara let herself believe that everything was going to be all right. Because for the moment, it was all right. Ward's name was cleared, sure, Coulson was still after him, but they'd cross that bridge when they got to it. For right now, they were all right. There was always going to be hard times. She had her trauma. He had his. But they had each other.
So… let me be completely honest. I had no idea where this story was going to take me when I first started it. I knew what I wanted, but stories don't always end up the way we want. It's bittersweet to be at the end of my Agents of Shield Era. It will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first fanfiction I ever wrote and the second I ever published. However, I am far from being finished with my Marvel "addiction". I have more stories in the works for my Agents and Civilians storyline. I can't wait for you to follow along with that. For those who will miss Sara and Ward, I do plan on posting in my Sara Reyes-Fitz: Princess of S.H.I.E.L.D. story. It's just snippets from Sara and Ward's relationship prior to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Thank you to everyone who liked and favorited this story. I hope you all enjoyed.
