Chapter Three

They get back to the station and Andy rushes out of the truck and up to Sullivan's office.

"Herrera? What's wrong?" He asked when he saw tears starting to fall from her eyes.

"I need to tell you something."

"What is it, Andy? You can talk to me about anything."

"During my first year as a firefighter, we had a call at the place we were called to today." Andy paused. "I tried to get a little girl out but our exit got blocked and she died in my arms from smoke inhalation." Andy looks down. "I couldn't save her." She told Sullivan. "I froze up at the scene today. I had to get Bishop and Gibson to take over. I am so sorry, Sullivan."

Robert gets up from his chair and walks in front of his desk. "Andy, I know you're an exception firefighter, I know this is most likely the first time in your career that's happened so it's okay. But you know you need to talk to Diane about this. After shift."

"I understand. I really want to be captain and I'll do whatever I need to." Andy said, knowing that she had to do better.

"Captain Herrera." Robert stops Andy from walking out and pulls something out of one of his desk drawers and tosses it to Andy.

Andy catches it and unfolds it. She looks at it and sees that the shirt has a new nameplate on it. Capt. Herrera. She looked up at Sullivan with tears in her eyes. "Thank you so much Chief Sullivan. I won't disappoint you."

"I know you won't." Robert told her. "Go get changed and meet me back here and we'll go into the barn and tell everyone." Robert smiled. "I actually have a plan."

"What is it?" Andy asked, face scrunched up in confusion.

"I want you to line up just like the rest of the team and then I'll annouce that the new captain is here and wants to meet everyone. You'll be in lineup and then you'll step forward and stand beside me."

"Sound ok?"

Andy grins. "Sounds good, Chief." Andy turns "I'll see you down there."

Robert nods and Andy leaves his office. When she's in the locker room she sees Maya come up to her.

"Hey, are you doing okay Andy?"

"I'm good. Just figured I should let Sullivan know what happened on the call." Maya nods. "Sullivan let me know that he'll be calling us for lineup before shift ends."

"Okay. Thanks for letting me know." Maya said and then left the room.

Andy looked around, seeing if there was anyone else around and when she felt she was alone she changed into the new captain shirt, smiling as she did. Not believing that this was finally happening. Andy hided out in locker room, waiting to be called down for lineup. It was 10 minutes later when Sullivan called for lineup.

"Everyone, Chief Dixon wants me to name a new captain." Sullivan told them and they all looked at each other "A new female captain." heads turn Andy's way, knowing that it would be her.

"So, is it someone here or is it someone coming from another house?" Maya butted in.

"Position is being filled by someone at this house."

"Come on, Chief Sullivan. Don't leave us in suspense." Jack asked.

Before Sullivan could respond they all her another voice.

"It's Andy. She made captain." Pruitt told the group, standing beside Sullivan.

Everyone turns to Andy and sees the smile on her face and then they all finally notice the nameplate on her t-shirt. "How long have you had that shirt on and how the hell did none of us notice it when some of us are standing right across from you?" Travis asked.

"Because you weren't focused on looking at nameplates." Pruitt told the group, in a bored voice.

"Sir? Why don't you seem happy by this?" Dean asked.

"You view Andy as your legacy yet seem and act like you don't want her as captain right now." Maya spoke. "What the hell is going on?"

"I don't want her as captain right now." the team sees Andy look down. "I think it's too soon. Especially with what has happened recently."

"But she's ready. She's born for this." Maya tried to fight for her best friend.

The team starts to pepper Pruitt with questions while Andy and Sullivan just stand in silence.

"ENOUGH!" Andy yelled after a couple minutes, trying to get her teams attention to stop the arguing. "I'm captain. It was made offical as of around 10pm last night. Anyone who has a problem with it will have to get over it." Andy looks at her father. "I know that with what's happened recently has broken me but that doesn't mean that I can't do my job."

"Andy-" Pruit tried but Andy just held up a hand, stopping him from saying anymore.

"No, dad. Sullivan chose me. I don't know what's going on with you but you'll have to deal with this decision. I know what I need to do to stay captain of this house and I won't let anyone ruin this for me."

"Andy, I'm sick." Pruitt blurts out.

Andy freezes and can feel her breathing get heavier. "Wha- How bad?"

Pruitt looks down, knowing how much this will hurt Andy. "6 months."

"I-" Andy starts but chokes up. "I can't do this right now." Andy turns to face her team. "I'll see you all next shift. Be prepared for a workout first thing." Andy told them and then rushed out of room and to her car after grabbing her bag from her locker. When she gets to her car she sees Maya leaning against it.

"I don't want to talk right now, Maya." Andy told her, unlocking the car.

"Andy, you shouldn't be alone tonight." Maya told her, reaching for one of Andy's hands.

"I need to go talk to someone. So please. Maya. Get out of my way."

"Andy.."

"Maya, I promise I'll be fine." Andy told her and Maya finally moved out of thew way.

Maya just nodded and got out of the way and told Andy to be safe.

Andy got in her car and just sighed. Thankful for the moment of silence before she drove off to the police station. If I don't have my dad. If I don't have my mom. If I don't have Ryan I need someone. Andy thinks as she tears up. I'm losing fucking everyone I love. Andy speeds up and when she gets to the station she walks in, asking for Ryan's boss.

"Hi. I was wondering if I could speak to Captain Rendon? Tell him Andy Herrera needs to talk to him." Andy asked the front desk officer. He nods and grabs his phone, calling for Rendon. It takes a couple minutes for him to come.

"Andy, it's been a while." He said and pulled her into a hug. "I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make it to Ryan's funeral. I had an undercover mission when he-"

Andy cut him off. "It's okay." Andy pulled away from him. "I need your help with something."

"Anything." Rendon told her. "What do you need?"

"Information on my family. I need to know why my extended family suddenly disappeared soon after my mom died."

Rendon nods and logs into his computer. "Andy, what was your mother's name again?"

"Elena." Andy watched his face change "What? What is it?"

"Andy, your mother's extended family is still here in Seattle." Rendon watched Andy's face change and paused before telling Andy this next news, knowing it may break her even more than Ryan's death. "Andy…there's something else."

"What? What is it?" Andy's face was scrunched up in confusion.

"Andy." Rendon looked up at her. "Your mother.."

Cliffhanger. So 2 things.

1. Robert and Andy are together.

2. Should I have Elena be alive OR should I just have her death be a different cause than the show said she died?
