Chapter 4

"Andy, your mother's extended family is still here in Seattle." Rendon watched Andy's face change and paused before telling Andy this next news, knowing it may break her even more than Ryan's death. "Andy…there's something else."

"What? What is it?" Andy's face was scrunched up in confusion.

"Andy." Rendon looked up at her. "Your mother.."

"What? What it is?"

"How did you say she died?" Rendon asked, looking at her.

"My dad told me she was sick and died from some kind of illness." Andy looked confused. "Why?"

"Because according to the death certificate, she didn't die from any type of disease. She died in a fire."

Andy's mouth opened and closed, gaping like a fish. "Excuse me?"

"Yeah. She was meeting with Sandra Vasquez about something and the restaurant they were at caught fire." Rendon watched Andy's face turn to a frown. "I'm so sorry Andy."

"I need to go," Andy said, running a hand through her hair. "Thank you, Captain Rendon. It was nice seeing you."

"It was nice to see you too, Andy. Hey, you should come by and have dinner with me and Cathy one night."

"Yeah, maybe," Andy said, wanting to leave.

Captain Rendon and Andy said their goodbyes and Andy got in her car and drove away, trying to keep her breathing calm she made her way to Maya and her apartment. When she was parking she saw Maya's car and sighed.

Andy entered the apartment and was peppered with Questions from Maya.

"Where did you go? What did you do? Are you okay? Why was your dad so pissed at you becoming captain?"

"I'm going to answer these questions and then I'm going to bed because I'm exhausted," Andy told her, putting her keys on the side table. "I went to the police station to talk to Captain Rendon. We talked about my mother and aunt. I wanted answers as to why we never see her anymore. I'm fine, just really tired and confused. And I don't know why he was so pissed. You'd think a father would be proud that their child is following in their footsteps."

Maya looked taken aback. "Wow. So did you get any answers?"

"I did. I'll tell you about it tomorrow." Andy brushed past Maya and to her bedroom. Andy changed into some sweatpants and then jumped into bed, falling asleep minutes later.

The next morning Maya woke up, expecting to see Andy in the kitchen, coffee in hand but was surprised when she didn't see Andy or a pot of coffee brewing. Maya sighed and made her way to Andy's room and knocked.

"Andy? Are you awake? You've been in here since 12 pm yesterday. You need to get up and eat." Maya was about to knock on the door again when it opened.

"Sorry. I know I should've woken up earlier."

"It's fine. I just wanted to know if you were still asleep." Maya explained. "I was a little surprised you weren't in the kitchen with a coffee in your hands though."

"Yesterday was just a lot." Andy walked past Maya." Sullivan letting me know he was making me captain. Going to that factory. And then there was the shit with my dad that I'm still confused about." Andy ran a hand over her face. "Can we just have a chill day today? If you don't have anything to do I mean." Andy quickly added.

"Yeah, of course." Maya pulled Andy into a hug and Andy just melted into it, wrapping her arms around Maya's waist. "I'm going to go start some coffee, and you, are going to grab a couple of blankets and get settled on the couch," Maya told her, going into the kitchen while Andy walked back into her room to grab a couple of fluffy blankets and took them to the couch.

Andy settled on the couch, grabbing the remote and looking for a movie to watch on TV. "Ugh," Maya heard Andy groan from the kitchen. She finished making their coffees and then walked to the living room.

"What's up?" Maya sat beside Andy.

"There's nothing on TV." Andy huffs dramatically. "Netflix?"

Maya giggles. "Sure. Show or movie?"

"Show," Andy answered a second after Maya asked. "What show?"

"Um. How about Gilmore Girls? Think we were on season 2."

Andy smiles. "We were." Andy loads Netflix and they start to play season 2 episode 3, where they left off last time. They were halfway through the episode when they heard a knock on the door. "Ugh. I'll get it." Andy told Maya, standing up. Andy walked to the door and was shocked to see Sullivan there. "Robert? What are you doing here?"

"I needed to talk to you about something," Robert told her. "Can we talk?"

"Um. I was just watching a show with Maya but-"

"It's fine. I need to go out to get some groceries. I'll be back in an hour." Maya told Andy, grabbing her coat and keys. "I know you two probably need your own space so if you need me to stay out longer I can?"

Andy shakes her head and smiles "No, an hour should be fine. If not we can go out. I'll just text you or leave a note that I went out."

"Okay. I'll see you later." Maya said and walked out of the apartment.

"This is bold, Robert," Andy told him, expression turning serious. "What do you need to talk to me about?"

"Us."

"What about us?" Andy asked, confused.

"I love you, Andy. I really do." Robert saw Andy's face turn into a frown. "I just don't know if I want to keep us a secret anymore."

"Robert. You just promoted me to captain. If we come out now we're going to be suspended, investigated and then one or both of us fired, Robert." Andy started to pace. "I'm not ready to lose you."

"Then what do we do?"
