The Tale of Twin Hearts

(Chapter 2) Hot Head and A Thorn in My Side

Page 1:

Did you know that the way most Froslass move around is based on a dance? I didn't know either until my mother showed me. The first time I saw it, I thought it was amazing, so I asked her to teach me. She did her best, of course, but I couldn't exactly levitate around like she could. Still, she never gave up on me and I learned the dance the best way I could with two feet; One of my bigger accomplishments really...I can't wait to evolve so I can be just like my mother...

On another note, she also told me the way some Ghost Pokemon move is based on some form of dance while others just move how they like, you know, whatever works for them.

Now I know you must be thinking, "Why is this puffball lecturing me about Ghost Pokemon and Dancing?" Simple. Chatot can mooooove.

The moment Chatot readied himself, I knew we were in for something since I've never seen any of his stances before. The issue? He was too quick. We could barely see how fast he was moving before getting struck with Wing Attack. To top it all off, he did it with such style and grace that he even ended it with a pose. Although it was only one move, it was enough for me to understand the amount of force he put into it since it knocked Miya and Pumpkin down.

"Overflow, such a maaarvelous and POWERFUL ability!" He sang, his voice shimmered like an echo.

"...and yet-"

Feeling it was the best opportunity, I leaped at him with Endeavor. I knew if I used the damage he did to me as a counter, I could do some damage back at him. Big mistake.

"-anyone can use it."

With unbelievable precision, he grabbed my paw with his wing and spun me around before nailing me in the chest with a Shadow Punch. The force of the punch was enough to launch me back before tumbling into the sand.

Frustrated, Pumpkin scrambled to his feet and shook himself off before going on the defense.

"Chatot, I thought you were going to show us how to use Overflow! This feels more like a beatdown than a lesson!"

Chuckling, Chatot leaped back and perched himself on the edge of a palm tree leaf...somehow. The fact that the leaf didn't bend, it was like he weighed nothing. Closing his eyes, Chatot cuffed his wing together to his chest. In moments, a sharp burst of fiery light appeared. The light was overwhelming, illuminating the area around him. It almost looked like was holding the sun with flares emitting from its core, only purple.

"This here is my Energy, the same energy we all use for our moves. Using my own special technique, I can show you what it looks like on the inside. We all have energy and we all can use it in some way, but it depends on the Pokemon. Tell me, have you ever felt this energy inside of you slowly grow the more you fight?"

"Uh, now that I think about it, yeah I have," Miya said, with Pumpkin and I nodding as well.

Seeing us all in agreement, Chatot took a deep breath and dissipated his form, causing the light to explode in a showy fashion as he turns back to normal. "Good, good. Our energy grows the more we fight, however, a Pokemon could fight their entire life and never achieve Overflow. That's because it's all about Focus and Willpower. The stronger our will, the faster it grows!

As I attempted to pick myself out of the ground, Chatot leaped off the palm tree and landed in front of me, holding out his wing. "Here, let me help you."

The moment I grabbed it, a rush of energy hit me. The flow of the energy was so immense, I felt like I could take on anything; Like nothing could bring me down. Though, as cool as it was, the energy left me as I let go.

"W-whoa! what was that?"

"That was my energy, Liloxi. It connects and grows when I'm willing to help someone, but that might not be the case for you, or even the others. The way everyone's energy grows is different individually, however, it can still grow fast when around others who have the same purpose or will. You've experienced this before. Think back to the first mission."

"The first mission? Wait, you mean the light?"

"Mhm, that's correct," Chatot said, nodding to me before turning to the others. Holding out his wings once more, Both Pumpkin and Miya grabbed them to get up. As soon as they did, their eyes lit up like Volbeats in the night, glowing just as bright as the ball of light Chatot summoned earlier.

"As much as I would like to simply 'show you', this isn't possible. To gain this power, you must fight! Fight in a way that fits who you are! Just because the way someone fought helped them gain the ability, it may not work the same way for you. Only you know who you are and no one can change that, not even your enemy. Sure, they'll try to stop you from growing stronger, but don't let them get the best of you. Some will even leave nasty reminders of themselves despite being long gone. Such things can crush a Pokémon's will and keep them from achieving Overflow."

Looking over at Pumpkin, I noticed he was touching the scar on his face. The scar was deep and for sure permanent. Understanding what Chatot meant, Pumpkin sighed. "Chatot, if this is true and our power does grow, how do we know when we have the ability?"

"Now that's something I can show you. Watch." Cuffing his wings to his chest once more, the ball of light appeared, but there was something different about it this time. Although it glowed, the light wasn't as bright, only illuminating Chatot's wings. Honestly, it looked more like a shiny marble than the sun, compared to earlier.

"Overflow looks different for everyone, but you can't miss it. Sometimes you might see signs of it beforehand, like a new move will appear or your eyes or body may glow a little. But the best way to know is when the energy inside of you is full and it feels like it can't grow anymore. When that happens, you're ready."

Closing his eyes, the light began pulsating. "By focusing both on your energy and your will to fight, you can let the energy within you flow out of your body, allowing you to transform into your Overflow Form."

Within moments, both Chatot and the light suddenly erupted in a flash, causing chatot to change back into his Overflow form and the light into a fiery ball of purple inferno, emitting flares like before. All three of us sat in awe as we watched the transformation smoothly unfold in front of us.

"I remember the first time it happened to me. It was when I was protecting the Guildmaster from a fatal attack."

"Really? What did it feel like for you?"

"It felt like a rush. It felt like clarity. It felt like I could do anything. Honestly, all I wanted to do is protect him. That's the push I needed for it to activate this power."

"Protect..."

Miya looked over to me, then at Pumpkin. As she looked at him, I could tell she was remembering the out first mission; her moments of trying to protect Pumpkin. Her moment of failure. Looking into her eyes, her gaze was deep; A look of longing. Before we knew it, her gaze was cut short as Chatot took another stance before leaping high into the air.

"Now that I've shown you all that I know of Overflow, I must see a sign of it from one of you before I send you on your way. This will tell me if you're ready. LOOK SHARP!"

With grace, Chatot stopped ascending and allowed gravity to take its course, diving towards us at neck-breaking speeds with Aerial Ace. Preparing for impact, my heart sank when I realized who he was aiming at. It was Pumpkin. As soon as I noticed, I cried out to him.

"Wait, Pumpkin! LOOK O-"

Before I could finish warning him, Chatot was immediately halted by a strong force, followed by a loud "ping!". In front of Pumpkin was Miya with her arms up in an "X" position above her head, creating a small barrier in front of them.

"M-Miya?" Pumpkin said as he watches her hold off the powerful bird Pokemon. The struggle between Chatot's Aerial Ace and Miya's Barriar continued, creating a vortex of air that whipped around the beach, sending sand and debris everywhere. Even the water was being pushed back from the shore.

"I'm not going to fail you again," She said before shoving Chatot with the barrier, ending the struggle.

Landing on the sand in front of us, Chatot stared at her in amazement as her body gave off a faint, pulsating glow before suddenly disappearing. Coming to his senses, Chatot chuckled, clapping his wings.

"Phenomenal. I haven't even finished explaining it and yet, you almost activated the ability. You kids are something else."

"For the last time, we aren't kids..." I said dismissively. Turning his eyes towards me, Chatot gave me a bitter look, one of utter disappointment. Probably should have kept my mouth shut.

"That reminds me," As he finish dusting himself off, a shadowy void opened up under him. Stepping in, chatot vanishes before suddenly rising slowly out of the void in front of me. Unable to tell if it was me or my eyes, I blinked as I stared at his Overflow form. It changed. "Mr. Liloxi, why didn't you help your friends?"

"What? What are you talking about? I did try fighting you."

"With moves that you've never used before," He said, inching closer. I don't know why it took me so long to realize, but he was also taller than before, taller than me. The feathers on his wings no longer looked like feathers, but instead purple ghostly flames, like a will-o-wisp. Even the haze around his body was more intense. I slowly backed up.

"How would you know!? Only I would know my own moves."

"You're right. Only you would know that," He said, getting even closer. "But I know when someone's never used a move before. Remember that Endeavor? You've clearly never used that move before, but that Ice Shard you used like a knife during your first mission to cut the rope? remember that?"

In a panic, I shook my head profusely, only for him to intensify his glare.

"What are you hiding Liloxi?"

"Chatot, I don't think he's hiding anything," Miya said, looking at me with concern.

He is, just watch, but don't interfere. You'll see what I mean. Oh and please forgive me for what I am about to do."

"What do you mean?"

Without warning, not even one of his stances, chatot grabbed my paw and tossed me into the air (who knew he had that much strength?). Panicking, I tried Flailing in the air before suddenly being struck by a kick, sending me neck-deep into the sand. Looking up, Chatot was glared down at me once more as Miya and Pumpkin looked on in concern. The way they looked at me...the way he looked down on me...it started to make my blood boil.

"Chatot! Stop! It's clear he isn't hiding anything!" Miya said

"Yeah, you're hurting him," Pumpkin added.

"You kids don't understand. Any other Pokemon would have fainted by now. There's not even a scratch on him," He said, pointing down toward me as I struggle to get up from the sand. With force, Chatot picked me up by the ear, forcing me to look him in the face.

"Look at you, putting on this 'facade', keeping everyone from knowing what you can really do. Why is that?"

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Oh really? Then I don't suppose you have the power to save him?"

Chatot pointed to the other end of the beach. Under a palm tree near the entrance was Lave looking out toward the ocean with the waves rushing against his feet and skirt. He was completely unaware we were nearby. How did I not notice him? He said we would go to the Beach tomorrow. What's he doing here alone?

Seeing the look on my face, Chatot flashed one of his infamous smirks. "Thought so."

Letting go of me, Chatot launched himself towards Queen at an unbelievable speed. Gasping, I scramble into a run, attempting to catch him. What a joke. I knew whatever he was going to do, he wasn't going to hold back from attacking Lave. I KNEW he was doing this so he could get a reaction outta me. And you know what? He succeeded.

Gritting my teeth, I sunk into the shadows after him. Right before Chatot could come in contact with Lave, I appeared in front of him and blocked Chatot's Shadow Punch with Shadow Claw.

"L-Liloxi? Chatot? What are you two doing here?" Queen said, caught off guard.

As much as I wanted to respond, I didn't. I kept my eyes fixed on Chatot. No matter what he could try, I wasn't going to let him get past me. Up above, the clouds started brewing as hail began raining down on us. A Snow Warning.

With a grin, Chatot readied himself, preparing an attack. I kept my eyes on him, showing my teeth and growling, like a wild Pokemon...but why? It wasn't like me to do that but at the same time...I couldn't stop. It felt like I had no control over myself. Seeing this, his grin suddenly turned into a strange stare as he narrowed his eyes at me.

"Liloxi?" He called, but I didn't answer. I couldn't. Attempting to get myself back under control, strange pressure suddenly wells up in me, and my vision blurred. To my dismay, I suddenly began charging Ice Beam from my mouth until Lave rushes in between me and Chatot. Seeing this, the beam dissipates.

"Whoa! Liloxi, What are you doing!? Relax!"

Hearing him, the overwhelming pressure halted, just enough for me to fight the feeling and myself back under control. Confused as to what happened, I looked around; my vision back to normal.

"Hmm, alright, I think I've seen enough," Chatot said, nodding as if agreeing with something. Abruptly, Chatot clapped his wings twice, causing his form to burst in a showy display of light, reverting him back to his original self. It was honestly quite pretty. "Let's head back to the others, ok?"

"Right..." I said, looking at him confused. Although I was coming back to my senses, my body was still on alert.

"Queen, come along too."

"Uh, S-Suurrrre." He said, also confused.

Making our way back, Miya and Pumpkins were waiting for us with hints of confusion on their faces. Pumpkin looked more astonished than anything.

"Chatot, what happened just now?" Pumpkin asked.

"I don't know, why don't you ask your friend here?"

With anticipation, everyone looked at me. I should have told Pokemon this before, but I hate being put on the spot.

"...What? I didn't do anything out of the ordinary."

"Liloxi, stop lying to us," Miya said, shaking her head, refusing to take my word for it. "We're a team. We saw what you did. So, what was that?"

Looking down, I knew there was no way I could sneasel my way outta this. I had to tell them.

"...Those were my actual moves and abilities my mother taught me. Before I left home, she said not to use those moves for any reason and that they should never be seen by anyone. She said they were forbidden, never to be used outside of our homeland. I would never question what my mother tells me."

"Forbidden?"

"Yes forbidden," Chatot chimed in. "It's a rule enforced by all regions. Any Pokemon found using moves outside of the norm will be reported to the Guardian(s) of the land where they will face consequences."

"That's so messed up," Pumpkin said frowning

"Yes, but I'm more interested as to what changed your mind," Chatot said, looking at me intently. I could tell he was fishing for more answers. It was making me uncomfortable.

"I find it strange you would use it to protect this young lad, but not your own team-"

"...There's no reason," I said, clenching my paw. I could feel the pressure welling up in me again.

"Is it because you two are childhood friends?"

"There's no reason!"

"Or perhaps is there something dee-"

"There's no other REASON!"

Quickly, everyone took a step back, except Chatot. Realizing what just happened, I covered my mouth, confused. That voice, it wasn't my voice. It was deeper and harsher than anything I was capable of. It even scared me.

"Thought so…" Chatot murmured, completely unphased. I had no idea what he meant by that, but I was too shocked to question it.

"...Miya, Pumpkin, Liloxi...in fact all four of you, listen up. After what I've seen today, I have decided you allow you to go on this mission. Now don't be alarmed, it's not as difficult as the last one, in fact, I believe all of you can handle it without my help. I'll give more details in the morning but for now, let's head back to the Guild. We're late for dinner. I'll have Chimecho send everyone's food to the room so you all can eat and rest. Queen, You can come along as well. I'll have an extra bed made and ready for you."

"A-Alright...but I had a place made ready for me."

"I'm sure of it, but I need you on this mission because it involves you as well."

"How!?"

"You'll find out tomorrow. Unless you prefer backing out. I won't judge."

"No, no, I'm curious. You can count me in."

"Perfect," Chatot said, smiling. He then turned to me, concern written on his face, as he put one of his wings on my shoulder. "Liloxi, don't be afraid to hide who you are to other Pokemon, especially when it comes to your friends; your team. You all did not become a team just so you could go off doing your own thing, nor did you do it to just so you could think about yourself. A Rescue Team always puts others ahead of themselves. If it was someone else going in after my team with the intent to hurt them, I would have given up both of my wings if it meant protecting them. I probably would have done it even if they weren't my teammates. Regardless, always keep them safe. Can you do that for me, Liloxi?"

Taking it in, I look over Lave, then at Miya and Pumpkin. I knew that if something happened to Lave, I would never have been able to forgive myself. Honestly, that goes for them as well. Looking back at Chatot, I nod.

"Yeah, you can count on me."

"Good, Let's head back everyone!"
