It surprised no one that among the Valar, it were Yavanna and Aulë who announced the first pregnancy - though no one wanted to think too hard about the mechanics of the matter.
At first, it was far from obvious, between the shape-changing and the fact that post Second Singing, her favoured non-tree form was a portly hobbit-mixed-with-dwarf-matron three times the size of a regular hobbit, so she was rather full of shape herself. But after a couple of months, there were reports coming out of Valinor that it was visible now.
However, a few days after that, Ercasseyonde received a new visitor.
"My Lord...?" Telperinquar blinked a few times at seeing Aulë on his proverbial doorstep. "Why...?"
"Yavanna has realized she cannot become a tree anymore." The closest he had to a father-in-law evenly stated. "She is... not happy with me right now."
The Lord of Ercasseyonde heroically managed to suppress bursting into laughter at the realization that one of the Aratar had been banished to a proverbial couch. "I... guess trees don't have wombs?" He suggested between some escaping snorts.
"That seems to be the crux of the matter, yes." The elf-sized dwarf muttered while making a face and crossing his arms. "So I came over for a visit until she has calmed down some and is not liable to smother my forges in vines when I am in there."
"You are always welcome." He assured him, gesturing into the city. "Have you had the tour yet?"
"I believe once, but I would not be averse to another." The Vala easily fell in step with him, following along as they took the scenic route to the forges.
"My Lord." Mairon had clearly heard - and sensed - them coming. Now he stood somewhat awkwardly beside his workbench, a bracelet-in-progress on top with several gems to the side. He had clearly been considering which would look best in the piece.
"Mairon." The Smith quirked a smile. "Tell me what you're working on?" He requested, one hand scratching Harthluin's ears.
"Oh... it..." The Maia shrunk a bit. "Baby-gift..." He barely whispered it, poking the metal.
"Ah!" It was probably pure instinct when the Vala reached down for a brief hug. "Should I leave you to it then?"
"Can't decide what gems to use..." His spouse pouted a bit. "I mean... rubies for you, emeralds for Lady Yavanna, but..." He looked adorable frustrated, but Tyelpë figured he'd better leave mentioning that until they were in private.
"Eru knows what exactly the new arrival is going to be." The large form bend down to consider the arrangement of stones and colors. "He certainly send no warning of any kind, so it's as much a surprise to us as it is to any other set of parents."
"Are... are there any Maiar of either of you two that did not follow into Eä?" He joined them, shifting some gems himself to see how they caught the light.
"Mmrrr... some. Most of the Valar have missing Maiar - for a given definition of 'missing'." The bearded form sighed briefly. "But there are also Ainur that could be counted among the Valar who did not descend, for one reason or another. So it could be related, but also wholly different." He shrugged empathically. "We'll have to see."
"That is a mood." Tyelpë grinned. "Can't be worse than Eldatanno."
"Did he do something again?"
"Neither of the twins will say what happened, but he did come home with a broken leg and broken wrist a few days ago." All three of them chuckled at that. "And here we all figured that'd stop happening after the Second Singing."
"Nope." Aulë brightened. "Oh, how about topaz? Do you have any of those? Yellow for my flames, and Fall foliage. Barring that we don't know when it will be born. And yellow's a neutral enough color it would not clash with too many other color-schemes."
"Good point."
"Oh, maybe we have some yellow diamonds in here too." Mairon had already disappeared in the storage closet that held the gems of this particular forge. "I'd have to add some other metals, because otherwise it's just a block of yellow."
