A massive crash occurred right behind them, launching Alfonso a few meters away. Emerging from the smoke, Rukia stood with Renji by her side. Rukia locked eyes with Alfonso.
"Yo, Alfonso… How bad is the war over here?" Rukia asked.
"Fucked, I think," Alfonso replied.
"The usual then," Rukia remarked.
Renji raised an eyebrow at the exchange.
"Well… that's reassuring, isn't it?" Renji commented.
Alfonso inquired, "Who is our enemy?"
"I suppose the Seraphim," Renji answered, his attention focused on the debris.
"Though, that name doesn't exactly bring great tidings. Especially after our… encounter," he sighed. "The Soul Society hasn't exactly had the best run-ins with the Quincy, and these Seraphim aren't different from their ilk."
"Yeah, well. I don't want to use my bankai..." Alfonso stated, standing up and drawing his zanpakutoh sealed as a katana.
"Hm? Why not?" Renji looked over, raising his eyebrow at the blade. "Most Shinigami wouldn't hesitate to use their Bankai, so I'm curious as to your reasoning."
Alfonso replied, "Is... so big... and unstable."
Renji furrowed his eyebrows, inspecting the Zanpakutō. "Unstable? How so?" he asked, turning to Alfonso. "Does it affect you in any way? Does it feel… wrong to use?"
"Mmmm... you only know when I'm gonna need to use it. Sorry. I am a foot soldier. That means I shouldn't have one," Alfonso explained.
"What… what do you mean by that?" Renji's expression changed as he heard the words. "Is there some kind of policy for Bankai that I've managed to know nothing about?!" he asked, looking at Alfonso. "If you have it, use it when the time is right. Whether you're high in the ranks or… well, a foot soldier." He sighed. "There's no reason to keep something like that to yourself."
"LIEUTENANT RENJI, BE CAREFUL," Alfonso shouted.
Alfonso swiftly jumped with an agile shunpo and positioned himself between Renji, Rukia, and the hand of a white being with wings of ghostly energy – the Seraph.
"Release, storm. Shikai, Kinkou Ina: Ogon Raisho," he announced, combining his sword and its sheath, transforming them into a two-meter golden lightning bolt with which he parried the Seraph's attack.
The golden lightning bolt collided with the ethereal arm, sending shockwaves around the three Shinigami. Dust and debris flew through the air, kicking up and dispersing around them, leaving the Seraphim's arm blackened with burns. Despite the damage, the Seraphim seemed unfazed as it growled menacingly, contorting its face into a hideous sneer. It then drew the sword in its other hand and stepped toward the trio, intent on cutting them down.
"And are we at war with this? It's damn creepy," Alfonso remarked.
The Seraphim chuckled, its laugh sounding like the cries of the damned in hell, causing unease among the Shinigami. It smiled, revealing a twisted face with rotten and missing teeth, and its eyes filled with a haunting void. The sight was horrifying.
"War? What an odd word to use," the Seraphim spoke with eerie calmness, swiftly and sharply moving its blade. Its grin deepened as it continued, "War would imply some sort... of equality."
Alfonso's Shikai allowed him to move at lightning-fast speed as he followed the Seraphim's movements. He attempted to connect blows with his spear made of golden lightning.
During the intense battle, the Seraphim managed to dodge some of Alfonso's strikes, but a few caught it off-guard. The creature grunted in irritation and took a blow to its stomach, gritting its teeth. However, the attacks seemed to do little substantial damage, as the Seraphim quickly retaliated, drawing its sword back in a flash, preparing to continue the fight.
"Well, well, you are a bit cocky, aren't you? I can go faster," Alfonso challenged.
"Is that a fact?" the Seraphim's grin widened sickeningly, its eyes still filled with an empty void. "Show me."
It mockingly raised its head in respect, prompting Alfonso to prepare his lightning spear as if he were going to throw a javelin.
"This is the strongest technique I can offer you with my Shikai: Kin Arashi," Alfonso declared.
With perfect coordination and utilizing all the muscles in his body, Alfonso executed a beautiful and total use of his power. He hurled the spear at speeds approaching the light, reaching the Seraphim in less than the blink of an eye, causing a golden, electric explosion.
The Seraphim didn't seem to make any attempt to dodge or avoid the attack until the last second, as it raised its blade up in time to stop the spear. The spear was knocked back, and a deep, guttural growl escaped the Seraphim's throat. Its gaze was filled with nothing but contempt, and a sneer curved its lips.
Taking advantage of the moment of distraction, the Seraphim stepped in for an attack. Moving in a flash, it brought its blade down toward the Shinigami in a swing.
Alfonso managed to dodge it, but not completely. The slash made his blood spray in all directions, and he couldn't help but fall to the ground. He could only wait for Renji, Rukia, or another ally to grab him before he smashed to the ground.
"And here I thought you might pose something of a challenge," the Seraphim laughed, its tone a sadistic mockery as it looked down. Its face contorted into a hideous sneer as it took an aggressive stance, watching the blood pool under the Shinigami, its cruel gaze meeting the wounded Alfonso.
"And yet…" it raised its blade, a glint of steel flashing in the light, "you did not even last a minute against me."
No one picked Alfonso up in the air, but at least it was a clean fall. Struggling to his feet, he used his spear for support.
"I have one last trick, Quincy," Alfonso declared.
"And what is that?" the Seraphim laughed mockingly, its gaze still focused hard on the Shinigami. Its blade was still raised, its grip on the hilt solid, not slipping for a moment.
"You know, every zanpakutoh has 2 forms: shikai and bankai... my bankai is not good right now, but I hope it works for you," Alfonso explained.
The Seraphim tilted its head, its expression looking puzzled. It drew its blade to its side before bringing it down to its hip. It looked down, its gaze focused on the wounded Shinigami. It tilted its head, its sneer contorting its face further as it spoke in a mocking tone.
"If you are attempting some sort of reverse psychology, I hope you know it will not work on me…" the Seraphim laughed darkly, "However, what is this Bankai of yours? I am curious to see it."
"RENJI! RUKIA! LOOK CAREFUL... because this is my bankai," Alfonso called out once more.
The golden blast ejected the Seraphim several meters away. A storm began to form, a gigantic storm unlike any witnessed before. Golden lightning bolts fell from the sky indiscriminately, striking Seraphim and allies in unison with the fury and strength of God himself. The light that enveloped Alfonso disappeared, and the wound closed. The electric spear took the shape of a guandao, made of the same material: lightning bolts of gold, but more defined. A black cloak of dark feathers covered him.
"Unmei no Kami no Ogon no Yari," Alfonso declared. The storm was unstable, and lightning struck everyone without distinction.
The Seraphim growled, its expression darkening as it saw the destruction caused all around it. It shook its head before staring at Alfonso once more, its eyes flickering with fury. Its lips curled into a twisted sneer as its chest heaved. It spoke again, its voice thundering, as the earth shook under its footsteps.
"So you're saying that your only method of attack is... electricity?" It chuckled darkly. "How very mundane... how very typical."
"It's not electricity," Alfonso raised his hand, pointing to the sky.
"Kinu."
Rain began to fall, golden rain, harmless to everyone else but abrasive to hollows and quincies by nature. The pain inflicted on the Seraphim was greater than any lightning, akin to pouring acid on an open wound.
"It's Not Just the Storm," a second self appeared, piercing the Seraphim's back with his polearm.
"Is everything."
The second spear struck, and the Seraphim growled in pain. It spun around, its voice dripping with rage as it addressed the new enemy. The pain seemed to only fuel its anger, as a thunderous crack rang out all around. The Seraphim's eyes flickered, showing a look of fear and agony crossing its expression. Its body burned, and it fell to its knees.
Suddenly, its expression returned to a cold glare. Its eyes flashed red once more, and it proclaimed, "You all will die."
"Executioner Lightning," a lightning bolt fell on Alfonso's polearm, giving it a more intense golden aura. He went straight to slit the Seraphim's throat. The shock generated a crescent-shaped wave that split the ground and created a fissure. But there was no explosion, just a clean and perfect cut.
"That's impossible!" The Seraphim cried as it fell to the ground, the attack landing squarely on its throat. It coughed, blood splattering the ground. With one final groan, it faded from existence, its body dissipating into fine yellow mist. The air fell silent, and Renji, Rukia, and Alfonso felt their wounds begin to heal, their power returning to them, the air returning to a calm silence.
Renji looked up at them, sighing.
"It... appears we have won."
The storm disappeared as soon as Alfonso sealed his sword back to its original form.
"Fuck, man, I told you that using my bankai was a bad idea," Alfonso said to Renji.
Not only had he swept away the Seraphim, but the place had also received serious damage from heaven's lightning. Many reapers were taken out of the fight because of him, and he almost made them lose some captains.
Renji stepped forward, his look serious, and his expression solemn. He looked down at the damage done before letting out a heavy sigh. He looked back up, his eyes flicking to Alfonso with a look of concern as he placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Your Bankai is... a great power. Yes. And you cannot hesitate when it is an enemy like a Seraphim... that could get you killed."
He paused, letting his words hang for as long as they could before speaking again.
"You have power... use it well."
