Guest:
Judy Greer as Karen Mitchell, Zach and Gray's mother.
Josh Duhamel as Ben Duncan, Karen's boyfriend.
At a two story, yellow suburban house, Karen Mitchell was loading luggage in her Nissan minivan parked in the driveway. There was snow on the ground, on the roof of the house and the trees.
After she put another luggage in the van, Karen turned around. "Boys, let's do this!" Karen yelled out for her two sons Zach and Gray after she put in the luggage in the van.
At Gray's bedroom, he was checking out the slides of the dinosaurs in his Viewmaster. The room was full of toy dinosaurs and various posters. Then a knock of door came.
"Gray." Karen said through the door. Then she opened it and see her youngest son occupied by the Viewmaster.
"Honey, what're you doing? What is this here?" Karen said as she gently takes the Viewmaster away from Gray and puts on on his desk. "Let's go. Come on, honey. Your flight's in two hours." As she said that, Karen went to his bag that is on his bed.
Gray turned his chair to face his mother, who was counting his things on his bag "Dane County Airport is 36 minutes away, 60 with traffic." Gray said.
Karen was packing up Gray's things in his bag as she asked, "How many minutes to get your little butt in the van?"
Both of them smiled at each other. Then Gray got up from his chair as Karen carried his bag. "How many of those?" Karen said as she and Gray walked together. Then she asked her youngest son, "Feed the monster under the bed?"
"Yes." Gray said as Karen closed the door to his room.
Gray went outside with his gray jacket on and walked into the snow, passing by his older brother Zach and his girlfriend.
"Call me everyday and text me pics so I don't forget what you look like." Zach's blonde girlfriend said as Karen walked by them and Gray came into the van.
"I'm only be gone for a week." Zach said to his girlfriend.
"Zach." Ben Duncan, Zach and Gray's stepfather, who is in the driver's seat on the van, said. He sounded impatient and amused in the same time. "You're not going off to war here. Please, come on."
After hearing his father, Zach and his girlfriend looked at each other in the eye.
"I..." Zach was trying to figure out what to say for the moment, but couldn't find the right words.
"I love you." His girlfriend replied.
"...will see you later." Zach finished. His girlfriend was obviously amused of Zach's inability to say "I love you".
"Vamanos." Ben said in Spanish, trying him to hurry up.
"Bye. Okay." Zach said to his girlfriend as he was walked by her to get to the van.
"Bye." The girlfriend said to Zach.
Zach was heading to the van as Ben started the vehicle. "Coming, buddy?" Karen asked as Zach was coming to the van. Zach's girlfriend waved at him as he got into the back passenger seat. Ben and Karen look at their sons at the back seat, mainly to the sullen Zach.
"I know it hurts, sweetheart." Karen said to Zach in a sympathetic tone.
"Are you gonna okay?" Ben asked, teasing his oldest stepson. Zach ignored those remarks by putting on his headphones. Gray smiled while in the back driver's side seat.
At Dane County Airport, the Mitchell family are in the airport. A Christmas song was played in the airport in the background.
"Everything right there?" Karen asked Gray.
Gray nodded.
"I'm so jealous. You're gonna have so much fun. I love you." Karen said to her youngest son.
"I love you too." Gray replied. Then he and Karen embraced. Karen closed her eyes to savor the last hug before Gray and Zach get on the plane. While that was happening, Gray looks at his father. Ben let out a tiny smile, but he seemed uncomfortable.
"Okay. Right." Karen said as she and Gray finally finished their hug. Then she turned to Zach and again to Gray.
"All right. Umm... Let's give these to your brother, okay?" Karen said as she gently takes the tickets from Gray to hand them to Zach.
"Can you hold these, please?" Karen asked Zach to take the tickets, but he wasn't paying attention because he had a hood on and the music on his headphones.
"Zach!" Ben called out to his oldest son.
"Can you hold these?" Karen asked again. But Zach wasn't listening until Karen finally got his attention. "Honey, I need you to take care of these."
Zach noticed the tickets and reluctantly takes them from his mother."Yeah." Zach replied in a indifferent tone.
"Hey." Ben called out to his oldest son as Zach looks at his stepfather.
"Alright." Karen said.
"Listen to your mother." Ben said to Zach.
As Ben told Zach that, Karen quickly said to him, "Take care of your brother, answer your phone. I'm serious. It's the green button. When you see my name, push it. Okay?"
Zach nodded.
"And remember if something chases you..." Karen paused for a moment. Then she said in a low, dramatic tone, "...run."
Gray smiled at his mother's joke.
"Come on." Karen said apologetically, trying to get them to see it was just a joke to them.
Zach half-smiled and said, "Yeah, very funny." Then he said to his younger brother, "Okay, let's go. Come on." He then ushered Gray to come along as they headed for the plane.
"Bye, guys." Karen said to her son.
"Bye." Zach said as he waved to his mother.
"I miss you already." Karen admitted to her sons.
"Yep." Zach replied with mixed reactions as he and Gray headed to the airport check-in.
As their children were heading to the check in, Ben then remarked to Karen, "So much for our first blended family breakfast."
"Why do you have to say things like that?" Karen asked bluntly, annoyed by her soon-to-be husband's remarks. As that happened, Gray waved goodbye while he and Zach went through the gate to board.
"Did you call your sister?" Ben asked, referring to Karen's sister, Claire Dearing. Claire works at Jurassic World as an operations manager.
"Straight to voicemail." Karen replied unhappily, since her sister is always busy running the park.
"They'll be fine. She handles twenty-thousand people a day. She can handle two more." Ben said.
But Karen was still worried about her son. Especially knowing they would have to meet her sister's ex-boyfriend, as well as the latter's gunslinger daughter.
After landing at Juan Santamaria Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica, Zach and Grey had later went to the dock that lands to a Isla Nublar ferry. There were hundreds of people boarding the ferry. The boarding ramps to the ferry had Jurassic World logos on them.
"How big is the island?" Gray asked.
"Big." Zach replied in an uninterested tone.
"But how many pounds?" Gray asked.
Annoyed with his brother's question, Zach only replied, "That doesn't make sense." As he said that, the brothers went on board the ferry.
At the ferry in the Pacific Ocean, Zach and Gray were standing at the rail at the top of the ship. "When they first opened, they had eight species. Now they fourteen herbivores and six carnivores. That's like fifty tons of food." Gray said to Zach as he remembers what he knows about the history of Isla Nublar, Jurassic Park and Jurassic World.
Zach wasn't paying attention to his younger brother as he was smiling at some girl below the ferry.
Meanwhile, Ava had prepared an Olive Drab jacket belonging to her grandfather, who had served in Vietnam, as well as her father's old combat trousers and combat boots before packing a M4A1 carbine and a Glock 17 pistol. Just as she and her father arrived at the pier, they both saw a nervous Claire standing before them. She had her white blouse opened and had tied it showing her purple tank top, beige hiking shorts and brown hiking shoes. Ava guessed Claire would have a hard time with her nephews, since she barely knew them in the first place. Just as the father and daughter arrived, so did the ferry, which let go its gangplank for visitors to leave or embark the ferry.
"Nervous?"
Claire turned around and saw Owen and his daughter. And on Owen's shoulders was Valentina, who was munching pretzels and was entirely dressed in pink, contrasting with Ava who was wearing old military surplus clothes while chewing gum. And given Ava and her father's experience with each other, they were there to help Claire out with her nephews while simultaneously taking care of Valentina, since Wu had a big task to do with the baby Ceratosauruses.
"In a way..." Claire replied looking at the gangplanks.
"As long as you don't fuck their ears off with this dumb intinerary junk." Owen replied.
"I'm an organized person as you probably know. And I took Masrani's advice to take a week off." Claire answered.
"Fucking nonsense. Just fucking wing your nephews some fucking time down, they fucking deserve it. And bout Dad, it wasn't my fucking fault if you turned her back to Valentina." Ava commented.
Claire then searched for her nephews, Ava heard the PA broadcast the same message in several languages. But she also witnessed the enthusiastic tourists leaving the ferry by the gangplanks.
"Welcome to Isla Nublar, home of Jurassic World. Hope you have a safe and enjoyable stay with us."
"So. How old are they? For a hint, Ava's now 16 years old." Owen asked Claire.
"The oldest one is Ava's age and the youngest one, well... he's two or three years younger." Claire answered, remembering her sister sent her pictures of how her nephews looked like as well as informations about their age.
"Great. Looks like someone's gonna consider me for some fucking romance." Ava grumbled as her father and Claire both smirked.
As the trio looked through the crowd, the Mitchell brothers were walking through the crowd after leaving the ferry. They then spotted Claire with the two Gradies and Valentina. The excited Gray then ran for his aunt.
"Aunt Claire!" Gray happily exclaimed.
Before Claire could react, Gray gave her a huge hug, surprising her and leaving her with mixed feelings about this reunion. Not knowing what to do, Claire turned to Ava who motioned Claire to return the hug. Claire hugged her nephew back as a distant Zach caught up with them.
"Oh my crap. You're so sweet now Gray." Claire said before looking at Zach. "Zach! Last time I saw you, you were like Gray's height. And look at you now. After six years maybe."
"Oh, seven actually. But you almost got it anyway. And I guess it's Ava, whom Mom also calls Calamity Jane." Zach replied.
"I don't want any fucking romance. And don't fucking think of romancing me." Ava warned as her father cleared his throat.
"So you're Zach and Gray. Meet my niece Valentina." Owen replied.
The two boys nodded before seeing Ava preparing her rifle and switching the safety on. Claire then handed her nephews an enveloppe with the Jurassic World logo on it.
"Okay, here's money for food. And I see you already have your wristband." Claire said.
"Sweet!" Gray answered.
Zach and Gray then put their wristband on before they followed their aunt and Owen, still carrying his niece, to the monorail closely followed by Ava. Once onboard, they took seats. The Mitchell brothers sat next to each other with their aunt behind them. Owen and his niece were playing thumb wrestling to avoid boredom while Ava was setting the scope on her rifle. As an excited Gray elbowed his brother, the latter heard the PA broadcast.
"Okay, everyone. We're going to pass through the main gate, built from the original park twenty years ago."
As Gray excitedly ran for the front, Ava muttered a bad word, since she knew Gray hated cursing. Everyone then saw the gate, which greatly ressembled the original gate except it read "Jurassic World" in large blue letters. As the doors creaked open, Ava yelled to Gray not to wander off while other children were grinning upon seeing the door open.
Once the monorail stopped at the hotel, the doors opened before the passengers left the monorail while others boarded the train. Gray excitedly ran, much to Ava's anger as Gray gawked at everything he saw. Zach, although not enthusiastic, didn't understand Ava's cynical behavior. Claire and Owen (who carried his niece) raced behind Gray as Zach followed them.
"Can he fucking slow down?" Ava angrily asked.
"Nope. He never can." Zach apologized.
"He should join a track team." Owen teased Gray, making Claire smirk at the older man.
As he was upstairs, Gray was so excited he wanted to explore everything right now, without even waiting. "Come on!" Gray called out.
"Shut the fuck up! We're coming!" Ava said.
They were able to catch up with Gray and went to their destination, which happened to the boys' room. Claire came in first and saw the employees had already put her nephews' luggage into the room. Claire also saw her nephews already had VIP badges, which looked like Ava's identification badge for employee's children.
"Shit. You got VIP badges, meaning you may skip the queue if you want to." Ava said. "Just like employee kids like me."
"Dude, just wait. We got plenty of time." Zach said as he laid onto his bed.
"I don't want to wait anymore." Gray said as he went for the balcony.
As Gray went to the balcony, he could see Masrani's park in full view. Gray knew a dinosaur park was John Hammond's dream, which Masrani fullfilled. The park feature a hotel with a beach at the bottom of the lagoon, which was divided in two halves by a huge fence, allowing Tilly the Tylosaurus to enjoy some privacy. Additionally, Main Street was built with the Innovation Center at the far end, allowing tourists to go back and forth between shops and attractional buildings. Once Claire settled her nephews at the hotel with Ava's help, they all went to Main Street with Owen carrying his niece for her not to be lost in the huge crowd. Gray ran excitedly from one building to another trailed by Zach and Claire followed by Owen and his daughter.
"Come on!" Gray impatiently yelled.
"Dude, chill. We got one whole week ahead." Zach calmly stated.
"Come on!"
"Slow the fuck down!" Ava signaled Gray.
"Ava's right. Jurassic World isn't going anywhere." Claire told her youngest nephew.
Soon, the Mitchell brothers pushed the two big doors leading to the Innovation Center and came in with Claire, Owen and Valentina closely behind while Ava came in last, knowing the building was a whole flurry of activity. And the part Gray liked the most was the huge statue of John Hammond standing tall in the middle of the building.
"Welcome to the Innovation Center, where prehistory meets technology. Join us for an exciting trip 65 million years ago." the PA announcer said.
As various children were using brushes to pretend being paleontologists in a sandbox while announcements were being made over the PA system, Ava saw the hologram of an Apatosaurus seemingly roaring at the boys. There even was a theater where parents and their children could watch documentaries about how a meteor caused a chain reaction ending with the extinction of dinosaurs. Children were both frightened and amazed while Ava was unimpressed, even in front of the holographic depiction of the Earth at different time periods of the Mesosoic era.
Needless to say, Gray used the hologram of the Mr. DNA show, where people were being quizzed about scientific knowledge.
"Cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine. The four basic components of any living being." Gray answered interacting with the hologram.
As Mr. DNA hologram appeared, Zach slid to Gray in annoyance of having to chase his brother around all the time. "Hey, please. Don't wander off. Mom's not paying me for babysitting."
"Gray. Slow down." Claire told as she and Owen arrived with Valentina safely on his shoulders while Ava switched the dinosaur hologram to that of an Parasaurolophus.
"There's a dang mess of places to eat before keeping on with the visit." Ava said.
Gray then grinned at his aunt. "Where are we going? Jurassic World Lagoon? Hatchery? The Aviary?"
"Shut the fuck up Gray. Your aunt's gonna take us here anyways. So shall we, Claire?" Ava said.
Claire and Ava first took Zach and Gray to the Gentle Giants Petting Zoo, where children were having fun with the baby dinosaurs, fullfilling a dream for many of these children. As he was in the crowd, Gray tried to get a better view of the baby dinosaurs by hoping up and down. Gray always dreamed of seeing one. Ava was more into working while chilling since she took a huge pair of pliers and took some vegetables to help the staff feed the baby dinosaurs before taking a goblet and pouring grain into the feeder in front of the baby dinosaurs.
"Lift me up! I can't see a thing." Gray excitedly said.
"Hey, I'm not Dad and you're not five anymore." Zach politely but sternly reminded his brother.
"I can still ride a Triceratops. I'm 47 and a half inches." Gray said trying to get a better view of the baby dinosaurs.
"Only kids are allowed." Owen said, causing his niece to giggle.
"He's right. This place is for little kids." Zach reasoned. "And cover your dork pouch."
As Gray covered his pouch suggesting to go to the spinning dinosaur egg, Claire began worrying as she didn't plan the tour for teenagers but for children. Fortunately, Ava who had just finished helping feeding the baby dinosaurs arrived and stopped beside Claire while Owen tried to explain the situation to his niece. Ava then whistled, getting the boys' attention.
"How 'bout going somewhere really fun? And how about watching me get dirty?" Ava asked grinning.
Claire couldn't help but chuckle, since she knew Ava would always look for an occasion to get her hands dirty. Litterally.
Once at the Tyrannosaurus Rex Kingdom to see the mighty T-Rex feeding on a dead goat, Zach and Gray stood next to Owen and Claire while Valentina sat on her uncle's shoulders. As Gray readied his camera, Zach saw Ava applying camouflage makeup on her face before putting gloves on. He then wondered why Ava was doing this.
"Look away, Valentina." Owen advised his niece.
Valentina nodded and covered her eyes with her tiny hands before Claire gently blindfolded the toddler. Just then, the T-Rex handler cracked a flare and tossed it next to the dead goat while Roberta was getting closer and closer. Once facing the mammal, Roberta didn't hesitate and grabbed the dead goat in her huge jaws and swallowed it whole while the tourists cheered. All this while Ava was cleaning out Roberta's dung with a shovel with almost no effort. Zach then turned away, seeing how dirty Ava was when his phone rang and he took his mother's call.
"Hi, Mom. I know I was supposed to call you upon landing." He greeted.
"You have a good memory, Zach. But could you please tell me your aunt is with you?" Karen inquired to her son.
"Yes, I guess. And Aunt Claire's giving a tour. With her failed date and his daughter. The guy's daughter I mean." Zach briefly explained.
"Oh, Owen and his daughter Ava. I see what you mean. Remember that time I told you what your aunt told me about her first date with a man?" Karen laughed at the other end.
"Yeah, I do. And as a matter of fact, you told me how YOUR first date was a disaster. And turned out Aunt Claire's datesaster and yours were both called..." Zach laughed, joining his mother.
"Owen." Karen laughed uncontrolably before hanging up.
As they left the Tyrannosaurus Kingdom, they went to the Mosasaurus Lagoon, where they could witness the feeding show. Gray excitedly ran while Owen and Claire chased him as Valentina happily bounced up and down upon seeing Tilly again. But Ava had better things in mind since she texted Sarah and Tiffany to replace the dead shark with a bunch of dead tunas instead. Everyone wore a raincoat, since Tilly was so big she drenched people at the exhibit. Suddenly, Claire's phone rang, forcing her to yell into it due to people taking their seats while Ava got an affirmative answer for the meal swap.
"Hi, Karen. How are..." Claire inquired, only to her sister laugh at the other end while Zach chuckled next to his aunt.
"Soooo! You are planning a second date, aren't you. With Owen? The man-who-wore-boardshorts-while-his-daughter-wore-cut-offs?" Karen teased her sister.
"Stop with this please. It was funny at first but not now. And the boys are having fun, they're right next to me and Owen. If you ask me, Ava's also there. And they volunteered to help me out with Zach and Gray. I know you barely have time to take care of them since your divorce. Ben has a new life now, as you do with Ben." Claire said.
"All of what you say about me, Ben, Moira and Ben is right. But remember you are now doing your best less than trying." Karen reminded Claire.
"Mom's line again. But yeah, you're also right. But I gotta leave you now, cause you're probably busy right now, Mom." Claire politely said, joking the last part, knowing Karen's divorce was a harsh time for both Zach and Gray. That was until they and their mother started a new life with Ben, a mechanic who happened to have repaired Karen's car.
Sarah soon appeared onto the platform and started explaining, "The Tylosaurus was known to have hunted near the surface where it caught anything it could sink it's teeth into, be it sharks, turtles, birds or even smaller marine Tylosauruses."
But Gray now had to behave, since Claire gently tapped his shoulder while Zach looked at a picture of his girlfriend before sliding to a picture of his mother with Ben as Valentina giggled upon the perspective of seeing Tilly again. But Sarah saw the big bunch of tuna being lifted over the lagoon.
"Please folks, give a hand to Tilly the Tylosaurus when she emerges. Just prepare to greet her." Sarah announced.
"Zach! Zach! It's the Tylosaurus!" Gray excitedly told his older brother.
As Zach looked up from his phone, Tilly jumped out of her pond and caught the bunch of tuna before falling into the water and dragging the fish with her, drenching people in the process. Everyone, including Zach, clapped at this sight, not minding being wet and drenched just as the bleechers were being lowered.
"Hold on tight. We're now going to give you an even closer look at Tilly." Sarah announced.
"Wanna see more and better?" Ava asked as people clapped Tilly eating tuna.
"I hope they'll like it." Claire replied referring to her nephews.
