1 Ain't this a shit show.

Daiten Kato, hurried down the sunny streets. The heavy-duty hiking boots he wore on principle carried him down the crowded streets, he dodged, dipped and weaved around the crowd going the other way. His destination, the supermarket, his latest pay had arrived; this coupled with the UAU policy of every month giving the household a sizable sum of money to feed the inhabitants of the house for the month; this money was to be split equally between all the students.

For Kato, his housemates were extremely good with him. Of the eight of them in the house, five possessed mutation quirks ranging from a Gecko to a Wolf. Another of his housemates possessed a non-ferromagnetic magnetism quirk; due to the fact it didn't work on ferromagnetic metals had made his chances of getting into the Hero Course slim-to-none. In fact, the other members of their shared dormitory accommodations possessed a quirk that allowed her to store kinetic energy and release it as either raw blasts of energy at the cost of ripping her muscles apart or running the risk of breaking her limbs for not channelling it effectively.

Kato was in fact Quirkless. However, instead of having a quirk, he used his brains and fought smarter than most. But being a hero didn't interest him, he was more interested in the workings of a quirk and how they manifested into their resplendent appearances and unique abilities. He had lucked out of Primary School and then after acing the United Alliance High school entrance exam had resulted in him being offered a full-ride scholarship from UA High School to any University or College that had educational ties with the most prestigious Hero School in Japan. That was until Kato had reached Middle School when UA had announced they'd be opening a Further and Higher Educational Programmes.

On this particular Tuesday in April, Kato had no lectures which were rare, no assignments handed out; rarer still but three still needed to be handed in, common. He was twenty-two completing his final Bachelor's Degree Project but had been guaranteed a Masters and PhD, providing he could find a sponsor.

Kato had been working my assignments since 9 in the morning. It was now pushing Midday. We, the household, had no supplies for my next week of meals; it didn't help that there was a pandemic ongoing. Since Kato had been hit by the disease and had subsided on his room chest-freezer of homemade supplies and a microwave; he'd been unanimously selected to be the one to do the shopping for the foreseeable future.

"Come on, nearly there…I'm nearly there." Kato thought as he jogged passed a café, over the road and was cutting across the large carpark of the Supermarket when a blast of searing heat and a shockwave launched him off of his feet and into the windshield of a Toyota Prius.

The family had just gotten into the car and had started to panic, Kato looked. His face went pale, there was a well the quick response was to label the offender a 'villain' for using a dangerous quirk in a public space. The phrase that ran around Kato's head was "Idiot bloody junky."

Just then as the heat from the initial fire quirk user died down, the heat sky-rocketed again. Kato, knocked on the window "Fire quirk idiot started throwing fireballs, now Endeavour is here. I'd recommend getting out of here, Endeavour's not known for giving a shit about collateral damage."

"Thanks. Will you be okay?"

Kato quickly judged the distance "If I run." With that, he turned and he began to run across the carpark. His stride shortening as he ran, he felt the heat subside. However, as he was passing the last car in a thunderous yell he heard Endeavour roar "HEAT CARPET!"

There was shrieking from the idiot and now the hot summer day was now resembling what his cousin had told him about the Australian Wildfire. The car he was next rocked momentarily before it filled Kato's vision and the twenty-two-year-old knew no more.

There was an ambulance on scene, along with a civilian with a strength-enhancing quirk. This meant Kato had been bundled into the ambulance and arrived at Aldera General Hospital. He was barely conscious as they wheeled him into intensive care "Wha…What's going on?"

"Villain attack, Endeavour…Holy shit, when did you wake up? Mr Daiten, please stay calm…you've been through a lot. You need to rest, amongst your immediate injuries is a punctured lung." Kato, then found a mask being pulled over his nose and mouth.

"He's in a coma, the only way to guarantee his survival." Those were the last words he heard. He was out for six weeks.

(06/05/2020)

Kato came round six weeks later, to see not only his mother dozing in the chair but also found Aizawa-sensei, Recovery Girl and Midnight-sensei all in the room as well. "Kaa-san." Daiten Chiyo jerked awake with a yelp waking Midnight, but merely causing Aizawa to look up.

Kato, quickly realised that the members of staff had been crying. "How bad is it? Miss me?"

Chiyo fixed her son a look "You were almost killed…six weeks ago. You've been in a coma since then."

Kato gulped "I remember the fight; I remember the heat and then the car. What is going on? Will someone please tell me what the hell is wrong. Why…why can't I move…" Suddenly Kato gulped.

"I'm so sorry, Kato…the Emergency Medical Technicians managed to keep you alive, I got here as soon as I heard." Recovery Girl said meekly.

"You suffered irreparable damage to your Lumbar Spine," Aizawa started thickly, his tears hidden by his scarf.

"It means…" Midnight began.

"I know what it means sensei. It means I'm not going to be able to walk again. Wonderful, absolutely fucking wonderful, quirkless and wheelchair-bound." Kato moaned sinking back into the bed. Kato Daiten had been a tall and lanky teen, taller than the majority of his classmates aside from Diddy. As a result, his balance and coordination had been lacking, he possessed his mothers long brown, black-streaked hair and her honey brown eyes. However, his father had been a stern man with stern features and those features appeared in Kato now.

Kato now seemed to have aged three decades in five minutes "What…does this mean about University? My degree, my masters…"

There was a rustling before a high-pitched tone appeared from somewhere "Am I a bear? A mouse? Or a dog? That's right it's me, Nezu. More importantly, I'm the Principle."

Chiyo's eyes widened and looked at Kato with a look of "Is UA normally like this?"

"Yes and No, Daiten-san. Kato-san, it is good to see that you're awake. As for the most recent turn of events, the school board has informed me that you and your education will be temporarily suspended until you feel like returning to your studies."

Chiyo sighed with relief "Kato, everything is going to be tough for a while."

"It's going to take some getting used to. I guess I know my focus now."

Nezu looked at his student "What's that?"

"Find a way to repair the spine, in a way that does not involve machines. We live in a world where we have technopaths and electrical dumbasses. One wrong move and a person's repaired life could be ruined again by a dumbass. Especially if what I've heard about Kaminari Denki is true."

"Who is Kaminari Denki?" Asked Aizawa curiously.

"Electric yellow hair, skinny either ADD or ADHD or exceptionally stupid. I used to babysit him; his quirk is electrification with the consequence of him short-circuiting his brain…He wants to be a hero."

Aizawa nodded "Should he get in, thank you for the information."

"Is there anything we can do to bring charges against Endeavour? There is more than enough evidence that the Heat Wave technique that took my sons' legs came from him."

Aizawa scoffed "Not a chance…Daiten-san, Endeavour was unwilling and the HSCP was even more unwilling to pay out for the damages caused to civilians by Endeavour and his inability to control his ever-explosive temper."

Chiyo's eyes hardened "You didn't hear this from me but I want to see Endeavour crash and burn for what he did."

As Nezu hopped onto Aizawa's shoulder he called out "UA will foot the bill. Kato-san, change the world. Take it by storm. I predict a lot of rough seas ahead of you."

"Smooth seas don't make good sailors, Principle. As for changing the world…Consider the challenge accepted."

"Now, how the fuck am I to do that…" Kato thought as he folded back into his bed. "Is there anything you want?"

"My books, my laptop, notepad and a connection to the internet. Oh, and if I'm allowed... sushi and curry."

(Day Fifteen. Kato Daiten second day at therapy)

It wasn't until the second day of physical therapy for Kato, that he had a visitor that wasn't his mother, or his therapist. This man turned out to be a Doctor, a short man and bald across his head aside from a truly spectacular moustache.

"Doctor Garaki, I didn't expect to see you here! Is there anything I can do?" Asked the cute physiotherapist, in Kato's opinion. There was no ring on her finger, he hadn't even managed to find out what her quirk was.

"It's fine, I was here for Daiten Kato…I found this in the laundry department." The newly named Garaki explained holding up a bulging black note pad.

"My…notes…Where…"

"They ended up in the laundry room. I'm sorry but I had a look at them 'Hypothetical usage of Regenerative and Healing Quirks and the Potentiality of Repairing Irreversible Spinal Damage' title could use some work but overall, so far, your scientific methodology and resources are rather sound, definitely a lot of old references. Can I ask why?"

"Anyone current must have used these resources as a platform for their own theories. As you said, Doctor, my scientific methodology and resources are sound; that means you must have used them yourself and nothing is truly old in science. Something is found, others debate it and then it becomes relevant until the next breakthrough until the new breakthrough has revealed undiscovered links to a prior breakthrough."

There was a wide grin on Garaki's face. "First of all, my sincerest apologies for our inability to save your legs. I've heard from my staff that you were looking for a Doctor or a Nurse to bring you into a hospital for you to attempt your study."

Kato nodded "That's correct."

Garaki grinned "I would like to sponsor you. When you return to your studies, let me know and I'll talk to UA about you doing your work studies for me…At my private hospital."

"You have a private hospital? Isn't that…"

Garaki chuckled "I do, it is completely legitimate. It's a learning hospital, one that I helped to get off the ground. It also doubles as a lecture theatre for philosophical and sociological debates about hypothetical sciences and how they could be applied in the field of medicine."

Kato couldn't keep the grin off his face "Doctor, I shall take you up on that offer."

Garaki grinned, his future pupil was going to change the world. For some reason, the old man, couldn't wait for this day to end. And sure, enough it did, and within half an hour he had pulled up outside of his residence.

He entered through the front door, pressed the lift and pressed descend nine times. The ride was smooth and the elevator opened out into an underground laboratory, with tools and instruments everywhere. Everywhere you looked there was something prepped, there were test tube vials filled 'Quirk Particles', there were bodies in giant vats all of which were in varied states of change.

"Garaki, my friend…is it that time again?" Came an old but powerful voice.

"No, my friend. If you'll allow me a moment, I shall check your vitals; you need to rest. You fighting All Might has done some serious damage to your body. Remember, I'm not as young as I was. But I met someone today."

There was a muffled wheezing "You've got my curiosity. His name? Quirk? Occupation?"

"Daiten Kato. Quirkless. UAU Student and recently paraplegic. Courtesy of Endeavour, I found the notes for his PhD…He's looking to do what I couldn't before I met you. Then I discovered the quirk singularity."

Shigaraki grinned and twisted his mangled face to Garaki "Do what you must to get him on our side or at least neutral."

"That can be done, it'll be interesting to see what he does…especially after I tell him 'All the paperwork has been ratified' and it will. Sometimes, the law hinders too much."

(UAU)

Kato, sat in his armchair, legs up and body crooked as he played music through his headphones as he received an email from Garaki-sensei. It was a mere formality, finalising his future studies. But on another level, the lurking League of Villains would gain the services of another talented medical specialist.
