Chapter 3

KLANG! KLANG! KLANG!

Hiccup groggily opened his eyes and directly started to look around, wondering what happened and where that headache-inducing sound was coming from.

Someone spoke behind Hiccup: 'Well well, good morning sleeping fishbone.' As he tried to look back, he noticed he was in a small stone cavity with iron bars blocking the only exit.

It was then that the memories of the assault came rushing back to him and his mind bolted awake. 'Toothless!' Hiccup yelled while attempting to stand up, but his headache spiked with the sudden rush of blood and dizziness overtook him temporarily, making the pre-teen fall back on his butt.

He tried to shake the dizziness off and staggered to his feet again. As he attempted to straighten up, he suddenly lost his balance as his head swam even more violently from the sudden strain. He felt himself fall to the floor and waited for the inevitable collision with the stone ground with closed his eyes, but no pain came.

'Wouldn't try that again if I were you, kid.'

Hiccup opened his eyes again, remembering the voice that woke him not one minute ago. The first sight he was confronted with, was the tip of a sharp rock sticking out of the ground inches from his face.

Hiccup registered this and slowly turned his head around to see the silhouette of a broad Viking standing behind him, one hand holding the side of his tunic.

Hiccup's first thought was that Alvin came to persuade him to train his dragons even before the Dragon Conqueror had regained consciousness. But although the Viking behind him possessed a striking resemblance to the irritable Outcast, the stranger has some traits which differed from Alvin's. The Outcast Chieftain's hair was a much darker shade of brown than that of the stranger and instead of Alvin's green eyes, this one had piercing brown ones. Moreover, this Viking's voice was lower and smoother than Alvin's raspy tone.

The man's suddenly lifted Hiccup completely off the ground. Hiccup instinctively started to struggle against the hold, but the older viking didn't seem to notice and he dropped Hiccup nonchalantly to the ground.

It was then that Hiccup noticed a shackle around his right ankle. He followed the chain with his eyes and saw that it was attached to a ring in the wall. He looked at his other leg. At least they were dumb enough to leave my peg leg on. Next to this on the ground lay a hammer: the perpetrator of the horrible sound he heard when he first woke up.

The stranger smirked as he noticed Hiccup's gaze on his shackles: 'We wouldn't want you to get away, seeing as you could easily fit through the bars. Ha!' Hiccup rolled his eyes at the Outcast's obvious jab at his small body posture.

Hiccup looked at the stranger with a wary look. 'Who are you?'

'The name's Simon.' He introduced himself as he crossed his arms. Hiccup was sceptic if that was the viking's real name.

'You're welcome by the way for saving your life from that rock.' Hiccup snorted and looked away.

Suddenly, loud voices were bouncing of the cave walls and Simon straightened before rushing off in a hurry.

Hiccup was confused by the sudden hurry to leave but did not let the opportunity pass by: he quickly reached for the hammer, hiding it behind his back. Alvin turned around the corner seconds later, followed by an Outcast soldier Hiccup didn't recognise, and a grin began to spread on his face when he saw Hiccup was finally conscious.

' 'iccup! Ye're awake! What a joy!' He beamed with exaggerated happiness as the unknown Outcast opened the door for him. 'How 're ye feeling boy?' A sadistic grin was plastered on his face.

'How many times do I have to tell you Alvin, I'm not training your dragons!' Hiccup said, wincing as the strain on his voice caused his head to throb painfully again.

Alvin's grin widened at his statement and he started walking towards the Hooligan heir. When the Outcast leader was just a few inches away, he grabbed Hiccup by the collar and lifted him easily from the ground. Hiccup resisted the urge to grab the Outcast's arm as he would the reveal the object he held behind his back.

' 'iccup 'iccup, I don't think ye call the shots 'ere. I want ye to train me dragons, so ye're doing just that.' Alvin said while tightening his grip around the boy's collar.

Hiccup's sight started to darken due to the pain paired with the lack of air. 'I won't Alvin! You can't make me!' he wheezed while struggling to breathe, clawing at his captor's arm with one hand.

This made Alvin frown and he gave Hiccup a strong punch in the stomach to prove his point.

'Let's see about tha', Dragon Trainer.'

The Outcast chief let go of Hiccup and the teen fell to the ground in a heap. He unconsciously curled up to his side in an attempt to ease the pain and to control his breathing again, bringing the hammer to his chest without thinking. Alvin didn't give him the time to recover as he aimed a kick at Hiccup's stomach, unknowingly pressing the hammer harshly in the buy's stomach; he tasted iron in his mouth.

Alvin felt the hard sensation on his foot and frowned. When he saw the hammer and the blood dripping out of the boy's mouth however, his grin became even wider as he planted his boot as well as the hammer into his stomach for a second time. Hiccup's pain-clouded mind frantically threw the hammer away as the third and final kick made contact, this time in his abdomen. The boy felt like he couldn't properly breathe in anymore as he curled up on himself again, every inhale causing his body to convulse painfully.

'Well 'iccup, changed yer mind?' He asked again.

Hiccup mustered a glare towards Alvin as retaliation and spat in his direction, causing the blood that had accumulated in his mouth to fall onto the Outcast's pants. Instead of the angry glare he expected however, Hiccup saw Alvin's smile becoming even wider, clearly happy that he could continue the session.

Dritt, he's definitely enjoying himself.

The large viking grabbed the helpless pre-teen by the hair and pinned his head painfully against one of the walls. Hiccup cried out in pain, not able to keep his suffering quiet any longer. This seemed to rill up Alvin even more: he baled his free hand into a fist and Hiccup readied himself for the upcoming punch.

But it never came.

'Alvin sir we have an emergency!' A shout sounded towards the opening of the spacious cave, claiming the Outcast leader's attention. Not a second later, an outcast Hiccup recognised was standing in the doorway and pointing towards the sky outside.

Alvin looked lazily in his second-in-command's direction while keeping his fist at the ready: 'You'd better be right about this Savage.' He said menacingly.

Dragon riders! They're coming towards us from the northwest!' Alvin turned around fully, not letting go of Hiccup's hair as the Berkian heir's head was dragged to Alvin's side.

'WHAT?! HOW?!' Alvin tightened his fists even more and Hiccup could feel his hair follicles being pulled out of his scalp. He reached for Alvin's hand again, desperately attempting to relieve the tension on his hair when suddenly, he was thrown harshly to the side of his cell.

Alvin rushed towards the exit as he barked out orders: 'Gather the men! I don't know how they found us, but we won't be givin' back their Dragon Conqueror anytime soon. You!' He pointed his finger to an Outcast stationed outside Hiccup's cell who immediately tensed up, 'Close the door and don't let the boy out of yer sight. If he isn't where I left him when I get back, the dragons will have somethin' else to kill in the ring tonight.'

Hiccup heard the heavy door of his cell grind to a close. He lifted his head to try to focus his blurry vision on the retreating Outcast chief as he felt a small cocoon of hope nestle inside him. They're coming for me.

He attempted to sit upright, but the damage to his stomach caused a wave of pain to burn into Hiccup's senses as he tried to arch his back. The boy quickly gave up this endeavour and instead started massaging his head to soothe his burning scalp.

Thud.

Hiccup looked up at the unexpected sound as save for his occasional wincing sounds, the cave had been silent. Green eyes met brown and Hiccup found himself gawking at the scene before him: Simon stood over the unconscious body of the guard, bloodied club in his right hand.

A heartbeat later, Simon crouched down towards the guard and rummaged near his belt, removing the keys of Hiccup's cell door. The boy jolted back to reality at the loud clinking sound and furiously looked around for any escape. His eyes fell on the hammer he threw away moments ago just as he heard the door creak open again.

Hiccup haphazardly started to crawl towards the hammer, determined to get himself out of here. Loud laughter erupted behind him, but he didn't turn around. I'm almost there.

He heard heavy footsteps approaching him. Just a little bit more.

His fingers brushed the handle of the hammer and he managed to grab it just before he felt himself being lifted up by his tunic.

He swung it as hard as he could in the viking's direction and felt rather than saw it connect with the man's side. Hiccup was suddenly dropped again as he heard Simon grunt in pain and wasted no time running towards the ajar door. Haha I did it! I actually hit some-

He felt one of his legs give out on him and his face connected with the ground hard, letting his headache return tenfold. As he turned around to look what happened, he saw a half smiling Simon holding his side with one hand and the chain connected to his foot with the other hand.

Damn I forgot about that.

'You sure have one nasty swing there runt.', Simon said as he stood up again. Before Hiccup could react, Simon lifted the red-smeared cub and swung it against Hiccup's temple. The overwhelming pain caused black spots to consume his vision, gobbling it hole as he felt his consciousness leave him.

Alvin rushed towards the beaches in the direction where the dragons have been spotted. He was followed by some of his most trusted men, barking orders towards the archers and warriors all along his route.

Alvin had a harder time trying to navigate the unknown paths of this island compared to home, but eventually he reached a hill where he could best keep overview of the upcoming battle.

'ARCHERS! TAKE YER AIM!' He yelled at the top of his longs, making sure all of his men could hear his orders.

'AIM!'

He waited a moment until he estimated the swam of oddly shaped dragons were close enough.

'FIRE!'

Dozens of arrows flew swiftly and silently towards the dragons, but none of the arrows appeared to have hit their targets as the creatures continued their trajectory towards the small island undisturbed.

Alvin shared a confused glance with his second-in-command and he shrugged, not believing his eyes either as the well-aimed arrows appear to have simply passed through the approaching group.

'SLINGMEN!' Savage directed his attention to the men steering the large contraption used many times to down a dragon. 'FIRE!'

The large bolder was let loose and flung with an arch towards the flock of flying reptiles. This finally received a reaction; however, it was not one the Outcasts expected.

As the bolder crashed into the silhouette of one of the dragons flying in the centre of the group, suddenly and without warning, the whole flock of dragons just disappeared without a trace.

What is Odin's name…
