Chapter 1: Bonfire

(...) After Jack Horner was finally defeated and they were no longer threatened by anything, everyone gathered watched the explosion of the star, which caused it to multiply into millions of small pieces, which, flying across the dark blue sky in its flash, caused everyone to be delighted by the sight.

"Well...this may be silly, but shall we think of a wish?" Asked Kitty, fascinated by the sight. Puss put her arm around Kitty's paw then they made eye contact between them. Her flawless blue eyes were like a bottomless well...they were so beautiful and deep that Puss could stare into them all the time. His other hand landed on her cheek, she involuntarily bent her head towards his hand squeezing it.

"Kitty...my last life spent by your side is all I want," Puss replied. Kitty smiled at his comment and blushed softly. She had finally found the partner she had been looking for for so long! She had found someone she could trust implicitly and be confident that she would not be left alone. She could see that Puss had changed and that he would not commit the same act as during Santa Coloma when he left her alone in the church...

Puss and Kitty sat on the ground, with Perrito still squeezed in between them, who bent his head towards Puss, who began to scratch him behind the ear to his pleasure.

"You know Perrito, about that name...you have to pick one eventually," said Puss thoughtfully.

"Great idea! I think Hefe would suit him!" She suggested the idea to Kitty. Puss and Perrito looked at her with slight confusion when they heard her suggestion. Hefe? It sounded rather strange...

"Hefe? Does he look like Hefe?" Asked Puss, Perrito denied with a shake of his head.

"I was thinking about Coconut...what do you think Perrito? Coconut..." Replied a fascinated Puss. The name would most likely be a reference to Perrito's fur, which bears some resemblance to the texture of this fruit. Perrito, however, did not like this and laughed in denial with a shake of his head.

"You know what, why don't we just stay with Perrito, okay? It's a good name...since my friends call me that" asked the dog modestly. Puss and Kitty looked at each other giving each other an understanding look, they were in agreement on one thing - it was a good idea.

"Well that's Perrito and it's over, that's it" Kitty communicated. The three of them hugged each other and looked at the now fading sky.

When the star had completely dissipated in the sky and there was no longer a trail on the dark blue mantle of the earth, the three heroes decided to return home to begin their next adventures. Goldilocks and the teddy bears had done so well before them, said goodbye to the cats and went their separate ways. It was a little amusing to Puss that less than half an hour ago they were still fighting each other to the death ready to do cruel deeds to get a star from heaven and in the end they parted in peace. These were rare moments when enmity turns into friendship, usually Puss had to fight to the end, there was no 'concessionary fare' during which an enemy suddenly becomes a friend.

Soon, however, it was time for the three of them to go - it was getting colder and darker, so it was a good time to go home.

"Alright, let's go home...by the time we get out of here it will probably be dawn" Puss communicated. He was the first to get up from the ground shaking off some of the dust that had accumulated from the ground over that time from his fur. He helped to get up for Kitty, and Perrito picked himself up being ready to go back. Before they did, Puss took a quick glance at the star-shaped crater in the ground - there was nothing there but earth. Not a trace of any magic that might have been there. Now the place looked like an ordinary star-shaped crater, a meaningless hole in the ground. No one would believe that the most powerful magic on the entire earth lay there...

Having lost the map that directed everyone to their destination it was a little harder to find their way out of this enchanted place, but they decided to follow the one visible path. There was nothing else around the colourful trees that were everywhere and the heavily green grass. There was no way to go anywhere else because it was already so dark that only the nearest trees were visible. The trees in the second row were already barely visible, they were devoid of colour, the outlines were barely visible and the third row trees were invisible!

"Something is dark in this forest at night...you can barely see our way " said Puss thoughtfully.

"To think that during the day it looks like a children's forest and at night you could shoot a horror movie here!" Kitty added.

"Yes...Horror...well said." Added Perrito uncertainly. Kitty and Puss were both cats so it was natural for them to have excellent eyesight, especially in the dark which gave them a great advantage compared to the likes of Perrito who could barely see where he was going let alone say what was beside or behind them! He kept between Kitty and Puss so as not to accidentally lose them, but he still felt an uneasiness in his heart...he was afraid that something would jump on them or someone would start chasing them. There was absolute blackness between the trees that could hide literally anything.

"The good news is that we'll be out of here by the world," Kitty added.

"Unless we speed up, we'll be even faster" suggested Puss.

"How about...we make a stop?" Asked Perrito uncertainly. His offer was met with a perplexed look by Puss, who denied it immediately with a shake of his head.

"No fooling Perrito, we have no time to waste. The road is certainly not that much," replied Puss.

"But...that's not the point, I'm not tired...it's just this darkness...what if there's something behind it? How will we defend ourselves?" Perrito asked.

"No one will chase us Perrito , calmly" replied Puss. He was stubborn of his own and did not want to make any break. As you can see he wanted to get out of this place as soon as possible and enjoy life...and respect it. Kitty did not add anything on the subject, she also wanted to get out of here, she supported the cat's opinion - they should not waste their time sitting in this forest. The sooner they got out of here the better, and ideally they should leave later that night to arrange some accommodation at some inn. However, Perrito's behaviour and his relatively too-frequent looking around in the dark raised some suspicion in Kitty, who noted how the dog often looked around nervously.

"I have a feeling something isn't about the road, is it Perrito?" She asked Kitty thus giving a wicket for Perrito to tell the truth. He hesitated for a moment whether to tell the truth or not, but eventually decided to admit his weaknesses.

"Yes...I am actually afraid of the dark and when I see...or rather when I don't see I start to get nervous...all too much" Perrito admitted embarrassedly. Puss stopped and looked at the dog, who bowed his head down with some weakness. He expected a heavy sigh from Puss, or something similar, and to his surprise he laughed heartily and stroked his head!

"Everyone is afraid of something, it's not a bad thing" said Puss as he made eye contact with the dog. Perrito, when he heard Puss' words smiled - he said his words! However, the cat took the lessons of the trip to heart.

"We'll make a campfire here, sleep here and continue on our way" planned Puss quickly. Kitty and Perrito didn't mind, so they decided to do just that.

"You stay here, I'll go and get stones and sticks for firewood" Puss communicated.

"I'll go with you" said Kitty, but Puss immediately denied it.

"Stay with Perrito, I'll be right back" replied Cat. Saying nothing more he walked through the bushes in search of firewood materials.

In the middle of the road in the middle of the forest, only Kitty and Perrito remained. The dog was nervously looking around trying as if by force to find some disturbing sound that would be a signal of impending danger, or something like that. His fear did not let up, which Kitty found a little funny and at the same time she even thought it was cute!

"You're the opposite of me and Puss..." Kitty said quietly. Perrito turned towards her with an embarrassed look.

"You mean?"

"You don't try to hide from your emotions or pretend to be someone. You're just yourself, without any artificial patches or anything like that. You're not afraid to show that you're afraid of something, you tell the truth, even if it might be hurtful...ago you had the easiest road on the map," Kitty explained. This was true. While she and Puss were fake, pretending they couldn't be hurt, Perrito had been honest to them from the start, even though he didn't know them! Puss, who seemed to be a stupid pet devoid of any values, turned out to be the best of them all!

"I just never felt the need to lie..." Perrito replied. This hurt Kitty a little, who nodded with a movement of her head. She didn't know what to say. What was she supposed to answer? At one time lying had become her middle name, when she was alone she had no one to confide in, and she didn't want to come across as weak! Life on the streets had taught her those bad manners. Besides, it was what she and Puss had in common - they both made money from stealing.

"Kitty...can I ask you something?" Perrito asked.

"Sure, ask!"

"What exactly happened in Santa Coloma? You often mention it," asked the dog. The cat smiled faintly as she recalled the event. It was an event that had dramatically changed the relationship between her and the cat; they hadn't seen each other since! Anyway, without any surprise - it was an unimaginable pain for Kitty, which was imprinted on her psyche.

"Why do you ask?" Kitty asked curiously.

"When we lost the map Puss told me a bit about it...did he really leave you just before the altar?" Perrito asked.

"Ah...the truth can be painful, but yes... I remember, it was a beautiful and sunny day, there were no clouds in the sky, it was so hot! I remember how prepared I was for the event, a white dress with a veil and flowers...there were white roses and other kinds of decorations on the church pews, and the guests! Ah...they were even there ahead of time to congratulate me, they asked about Puss but I was sure he was coming so I told them to wait. Once it was time for the ceremony and the bells started ringing the guests started to get impatient, the priest was asking me where Puss was but I reassured him that he was coming but then I realised..." She didn't manage to finish Kitty. She sighed heavily kicking throwing a stone that was next to her.

"I'm sorry Kitty...I heard your conversation up there in the tree and I guess it's a good thing he confessed?" asked Perrito.

"Yes, I didn't know it set him off at all, but now that he's told me I feel lighter about it...I told him I didn't turn up either so his conscience wouldn't bother him" replied Kitty.

"So you lied?" Perrito asked.

"Of course I did! But I did it so that he could sleep peacefully. I don't want him to suffer...I just wanted him to confess that he made a mistake" replied Kitty.

"And do you think you could give him a second chance?" Asked the dog. Kitty had to think about this question. It wasn't easy. Yes, she had begun to trust for Puss, after what he had done, but the wedding...it was a deep wound to answer it like that.

"Well, I think..." Kitty's statement was interrupted by a noise in the bushes. The bushes moved violently, drawing Kitty and Perrito's attention. The dog hid behind Kitty, who immediately drew her spade and assumed a pose ready for battle. She drew her spade and, aiming the weapon towards the bushes, approached the source of the noise. Perrito stood still the whole time leaning out from behind Kitty to see what was going on, but he was too afraid to get closer. As for Kitty - she wasn't scared at all. She even felt a bit of adrenaline. The bushes were moving all the time, there was no telling what could be hiding in there, if it was Puss he would have made his presence known, right? She took a stone in her paw and threw it into the bushes.

"Ouch!" Puss' voice rang out from the bushes. He fell out of the bushes along with stones and sticks into the middle of the road. The sight of Puss lying with a dilapidated pile of sticks made Kitty laugh at the sight of the cat and Perrito sighed in relief at seeing his friend.

"Puss in Boots can't get out of the bushes?" Kitty asked ironically.

"It would be easier without the stones and sticks," replied Puss getting up from the ground and shaking off the dust of the gravel. Apart from a slight irritation he was fine.

"We'd better make a pile and light that fire...I'm getting cold too" Puss communicated. It had now become completely dark, so that even the nearby trees were barely visible, the moon was not visible at all and to top it all off, the gusts of wind had started to increase! Fortunately, Puss and Kitty quickly arranged a pile of sticks and a moment later a fire flared up from it, which warmed the three heroes.

The three heroes sat by the fire warming themselves and chatting about all sorts of topics. The bright, pleasant fire from the campfire gave warmth and light amidst the night darkness. In time, Perrito's fears passed, who felt safe among his friends even despite the darkness that surrounded them on all sides. Thanks to them, he gained confidence in conditions that were quite difficult for him, Kitty and Puss helping him to overcome his own weakness.

"You know Puss...sometimes I can't believe how stupid you are," Kitty said at one point, laughing modestly. Her sudden words perplexed her companions, who looked at each other not knowing how to react.

"How can you lose 8 lives in such a quick time...for example, this is my 1st life!" Kitty added and everything became clear.

"Exactly! Tell me maybe what happened to you 8 times that you died?" Exploded Perrito vigorously. Puss hearing his words looked at him in mild disbelief and more surprise that Perrito had said that!

"Wait a minute! Do you want me to talk about my deaths?" Asked a slightly shocked Puss.

"Tell me, I'm actually curious about it too. Surely with every death there is some amazing adventure that everyone else can at best dream about!" replied Kitty ironically laughing. Puss recalling his own deaths, some of which were not the most noble laughed embarrassedly looking at Perrito who was already eagerly waiting for Puss to start telling the story.

"Well...I don't know if I can do it...it's quite traumatic for me..." Puss began to say, trying to convince Kitty and Perrito to change their minds, but to his misfortune the cat was perfectly able to pick up the irony in Puss's voice.

"You know I can hear perfectly well when you're lying don't you?" Kitty asked. Puss sighed heavily. It was a strange idea to talk about their deaths, but on the other hand...hey! They have all night, they don't lack energy and his stories are always the best!

"Well..." Puss agreed. He corrected his sitting position and began to tell the story.

"Listen, because I'm not going to repeat myself several times. We'll start with my first death, and it all started on a beautiful sunny day in Pampelum..."

This is my new story, I hope you enjoy it!
