CHAPTER 1: Two Kegs and a muffin
If you ever happened to try and guess which student from Class-A at U.A. would get caught red-handed sneaking into professor's Aizawas bedroom in the middle of the night, you would probably picture something like Mina frozen in fear without being able to use her quirk; maybe you would even picture Kaminari caught up in Eraserhead's ropes, pleading for his dear life; you would probably be able to imagine all sorts of scenarios...but you'd probably never picture Momo hanging in dead silence in the air by one wrist, in the middle of the room, tied up in the strong ropes of Eraserhead. And yet, here they both were, at 2 am, looking at each other in silence, tension as tangible as the mist in the warm breeze entering from the window Momo had just sneaked in from. Both of them breathing in agitation, one of them with blood-red shining eyes, in pain from using his quirk; the other one petrified more by the cold look in the man's eyes than by his quirk.
Yes, this is the kind of picture no one would believe true; and yet, there she was, vice president of Class-A, Miss Perfect-Grades Yaoyorozu, physically and psychologically hanging by a thread.
However, how and why she ended up there is the conjunction of events that took place some days ago.
"RISE AND SHINEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IN JAPAAAAAN" the radio burst at 8 am in Momo's room. Weak rays of sunshine found their way through a pair of old fashioned curtains. Yaoyorozu's opened wide with the voice of Present Mic drilling her ears. "Saturday mornings are the perfect opportunity to go out for a run or do some errands in the city, but here in RISE AND SHINE IN JAPAN we're not about the ordinary activities! NO BABYYYYYYYY!, this is the last Saturday before school starts again, so we'll be playing your favorite tunes from this summer! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH "
"He gets louder by the day", Momo grumbled as she massaged her full black mane. She thought about all the chores she had for the day while she brushed her teeth, still in the extra-large shirt, Sato had brought her from NY this summer. She hadn't seen most of her friends this past vacations, but Sato had helped her a lot with the situation she was going through this past 2 months, and she knew her secret was okay with him.
"I'm going out Mrs. Kuyamasa!" she yelled as she grabbed her purse before stepping out of the door's building.
"Alright, sweetie! Take care! Remember this is not the best neighborhood so be careful" said the tiny old lady, the concerned look in her face showed the nature of her motherhood, Momo loved that about her.
Just as Mic had predicted, that Saturday was full of errands and chores. She had to buy some basic needs to take to the dorms in the U.A., such as soap, new flip flops for the shower, a pair of shorts comfy enough to sleep in, and a pair of notebooks for next semester's classes.
"I hate to do this...but then again, I have no choice." back home in her small bedroom, she created about 4 boxes to put all of her stuff inside. She very well knew she couldn't be using her quirk to create things she needed instead of buying them, but then again, her economy was not in it's best moments. "It's not like I am creating a Rolls Royce out of thin air." reminding herself this statement to feel less guilty, she started to pack her belongings.
The rest of the day was spent packing, although there weren't many things to pack at the moment; just her clothes, her toiletries, her school stationery, and some sheets and towels. At the end of the day, she sat in front of those 4 packed boxes; a faint smile appeared in her lips as she remembered her first year at U.A. when her parents had to rent a truck to move her things from her house to the dorms. The smile fainted as she remembered her parents...amazing how things could change in a matter of months. Her mind was freed from the hostage of her memories when her cellphone vibrated.
"Party at the Dorms. Tomorrow at 8 pm. Class-A only. KEG AND BOOZE, NO SNITCHING WITH IIDA - DK"
The message from Kaminari made her smile at the idea of Iida's face when he saw the "immaculate school of legendary heroes' good name was being soiled with semi-illegal and vulgar actions such as drinking", she could literally picture him saying those exact words. Maybe she would've frowned upon that action some months ago, but the truth was most of the generation was almost 20, and nowhere in the school's regulations said you couldn't enjoy a drink in the dorms, as long as classes hadn't started yet. That loophole in the rules had been the reason why Seniors used to have a frat party the last day before school started, and she was not going to miss on an experience such as that.
Momo's cellphone vibrated again, this time non-stop. It was the girls' text group.
MINA: did you get Kaminari's text? PARTY IS ON TONIGHT!
TSU: Can't wait to see you girls.
TORU: So nervous, what are you going to wear?!
OCHI: Wtvr you wear will look great Tor, your figure is awesome!
JIRO: Momo, should we bring something to the party? I mean, we are the older ones.
Momo felt troubled with that last message, maybe in another time she could've treated anything, but now her situation was different and she didn't want just everyone to know yet.
OCHI: Maybe we can all pitch in so Momo and Jiro can buy other stuff for the party!
Momo's heart unclenched at the saving text of Uraraka. God bless her soul.
MOMO: Sure thing! Why don't we meet with the guys to buy the stuff for the party in front of the store at 7?
They agreed and the conversation continued as they sent pictures of their outfits, their boxes, and their excited faces to see each other finally after so long.
"Momo dear, could you come downstairs for a sec?" Mrs. Kuyamasa's dry wheezy voice barely got to Momo's ears. The tall young ponytailed lady got her last box downstairs and into the tiny kitchen, where the old maid lightly trembled as usual when she stood up as straight as she could with the help of her cane. She was standing beside the table, where a plain brown muffin rested on a plate.
"Mrs. Kuyamasa, how sweet of you, you shouldn't have." for most people, they could've thought that sad-looking muffin had nothing special, but for Momo, it was a symbol of the love and care this lonely lady had given her since the first time they met. Mrs. Kuyamasa was your typical bird lady at Karikoko Park, sitting on the same bench every day at noon to watch the sunset. The day Momo left her home for the very last time, she walked and walked troubled and with nowhere to go, until she ended sitting on a bench next to Mrs. Kuyamasa; the elder lady could not help but talk to the pretty brown-eyed girl who's world seemed to crumble in pieces. Momo was so helpless and felt so alone that day, that crying in front of the granny was the last of her concerns. After talking for some time, Mrs. Kuyamasa invited Momo to her small apartment near the park, where she poured some tea for both and offered her a warm honey and oatmeal muffin to the girl.
"You see, sometimes life is just like this muffin, sweetie." she had said that afternoon two months back. "It's not flashy, nor expensive, it's rather humble but sweet and balanced. And that's okay too." Momo had taken a bite from the warm muffin, which had indeed a very balanced subtle sweetness (plus, she had not eaten in that whole day, so it also had that taste of homely relief). "Even if it is humble now, you still get to enjoy it. Same happens with life." the wrinkles gathering beside each of Mrs. K earnest eyes as she smiled made Momo feel that even when things had been disastrous, everything would be alright. That very same day, Momo had moved with her to the small room her son had unoccupied when he got married.
Momo's eyes got teary as she grabbed the last muffin of the summer. Every Sunday, Mrs. Kuyamasa would bake muffins to share with the girl each morning for the rest of the week.
"Maybe I shouldn't, but I wanted to," said Mrs. Kuyamasa. "This has been a great summer, Momo," now the old lady's voice sounded brittle as she looked in Momo's eyes. "You made me feel like we were two young roomies sharing a flat, like in the old days. Sharing my home with you has been a wonderful experience…" Momo couldn't take it anymore, so she left the muffin resting on the table for a second and hugged little Mrs. Kuyamasa.
"Thank you for teaching me the value of a home filled with love and care, Mrs. Kuyamasa" Yaoyorozu had this way of sounding so ceremonial sometimes, but she couldn't find another way of making this tiny lady understand how much she had learned from her this summer. They embraced for a good minute or two.
"Make sure to visit sometime, alright sweetie?" the wrinkly fingers of Mrs. Kuyamasa caressed Momo's face with longing. The young woman laughed while the last tears rolled down her neck.
"Where else could I have the best muffins in the world with my favorite gal pal?" they laughed, and Momo made sure to leave her coffee mug in the pantry, as a sign that she would visit often for a cup of tea.
"Off I go then," Momo said as she shoved the last box in the cab. "You'll see Mrs. K! I'll become a great hero!" she said as she waved from the cab window, getting further from the old lady who waved back, tears still in her eyes.
"You already are, sweetie."
"Your granny sure loves you, miss." the cab driver said in a husky voice, with 3 arms on the wheel and one changing the radio station.
"She's the best grandma in the world," said Momo wholeheartedly. After 30 minutes, the cab arrived at U.A.'s dorms.
"MOMOOOOOOOOOOO," Sato and Mina's loud voices in the distance drew a smile on the black-haired girl as she took out the last box from the cab. The rose quartz-skinned bubbly girl hugged Momo so tight that she almost lost balance; however, her look turned from excited to puzzled when she saw only 4 boxes on the floor.
"Where's the rest of your stuff, Momo? Is the moving truck coming later? Where's your chauffeur?" Mina's questioning made Momo's hands sweaty, and her mind went blank. What was she supposed to say now? Sato took one look at the ponytailed girl and rushed into the conversation.
"Is this the new minimalistic trend you were talking about the other day?" Momo's eyes widened and a sigh of relief emerged out of her very discreetly at the lie Sato had just made up. "Y'know, that trend where you get rid of almost everything so you can focus more? No doubt you'll be the top of the class with this new technique!" Mina seemed to believe what Sato had just said because she grabbed a box and started talking about a minimalist documentary she had seen this summer. Sero came by to help with one of the boxes, and Momo walked beside Sato feeling so much lighter now that they had dropped the subject.
"I swear Sato, your hidden quirk is improvising." Sato chuckled at Momo's way of thanking him, and together they entered once again to the dorms of U.A.
Inside, Jiro, Sero, Bakugo, and Tori had already settled, so Mina rushed to put her boxes in her room and went downstairs with her cellphone and her small purse. Mina's parents had bought her a yellow Jeep for her birthday and was parked outside.
"We'll be there in 5 minutes, so hurry up good-for-nothing. Bring the other idiot too." Kacchan was speaking on the phone as he got inside the jeep, standing and grabbing onto the bars of the roofless yellow Jeep. Everyone got inside. "Denki and Kirishima and on their way." the ashy blond told the rest. Everyone was so used to Bakugo's rude way of expressing himself, that now they could realize he was really excited inside. "LET'S KILL THIS PARTY."
When they got to the store, Tokoyami, Occhako, Mineta, Shoji, Denki, Kirishima, and Tsu were already there. They grabbed some chips, dips, sodas, and 2 kegs of beer. Of course, Bakugo had to go all the way and grab a bottle of tequila, which he liked for it's "burning sensation". Mineta decided to buy some weird purple energy drinks, while Tokoyami went for a bottle of Gin. Sato then collected everyone's money and of course, Shoji helped with the kegs.
"HOW DARE THEY ASK ME FOR MY LICENCE?! I LOOK OLDER THAN ALL OF YOU BRATS" no one in the car was able to control from laughing at Bakugo. "MOST OF YOU CAN'T EVEN GROW A BEARD ANYWAY"
"Oh chill Kacchan, if you wish I can create a fake beard for you next time we go for alcohol," Momo replied. Oh, how she had missed each and every one of them.
"Easy for you to say, you look like those beautiful twenty-somethings in American magazines," Mineta added, drooling a little. Momo laughed nervously at that comment.
"I CAN GROW A BEARD."
"Whatever, flame-boy, we're here." Kirishima jumped down from the Jeep when they arrived; he had this maliciously excited look in his eyes. "Let's get this party started"
I hope you enjoyed this chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it, see you next time! Love, Lady B.
