Chapter 16
Chloe's Pov
Last night was absolutely fantastic when Lucifer created a wonderful game night with me and Trixie and then watched a classic film 'Ghost.' Unfortunately, I fell into a deep sleep during the middle of the movie, and I couldn't remember what happened afterwards until I woke up the next morning.
Since sleeping in Lucifer's large and comfortable bed, I could always tell when Lucifer is sleeping next to me by sensing his body heat and how he heavily weighing down on the other side. However, I felt the weight next to me lighter than usual, so I slowly turned around and notice my daughter resting her back against a stand-up pillow while she was reading on her iPhone and dressed in colourful pyjamas.
"Morning baby" I whisper as I stretched my out and gently stroke the top of her hair.
"Morning mum" she replied before placing her phone on the bedside table. Trixie laid herself down fully on her side and faced her tiresome and messy hair mother.
"Did you sleep well?" I quietly yawned.
"Yeah, though you sored so loud" she complained through her mocking smile.
"Sorry about that, monkey" I laughed before realising that it was just the two of us in the bed. I slightly lifted my head and scanned around the quiet bedroom before facing Trixie again, "Where's Lucifer?"
"I think he's sleeping on the couch" Trixie yawned before closing her tired eyes for a second.
"Oh, that's nice of him" I whispered, thinking of how sweet Lucifer was to give up his bed for me and my daughter. My head was already coming up with puns that Lucifer would say in his sexy, British accent like 'Oh, you know me. My bed is always welcoming for ladies.'
"I'll go and make some breakfast" I suggested.
"With chocolate cake" her voice became high pitch when Trixie announces her delightful idea.
"Not in the morning, you cheeky monkey. Save it for tonight" I grinned at how my daughter still thinks of her delicious chocolate cake.
I passed over a warm kiss on Trixie's forehead before I slide out of bed only to quickly realise that I was still wearing my clothing from yesterday. I remembered that Lucifer bought some spare pyjamas in case I stay over, so I popped on some black pyjamas and wore a red, silky dressing gown over myself.
Walking out of the bedroom down the short stairs and into the living room where I sense the large emptiness all around me. Feeling the coolness down below when my naked feet pressed against the marble floor. The morning's golden light peaked over the balcony and shot through the glass windows and brighten up the furniture in the living room.
Already my nose caught the smell of smoky bacon and scrambled eggs as I walked down the other small steps between the library walls and into the big, bright kitchen. I already spotted Lucifer cocking by the hub while wearing a blue apron that says 'Kiss the Chef' in red writing.
Lucifer raised his head when he hear my footsteps and welcomes me with a morning smile, "Good morning detective."
"Good morning" I walked over to him and stood on my toes as I leaned forward and pressed my lips against his. Could already feel his warmth and his intoxicating taste hidden behind his sealed lips, until I pulled away to see the love in his gorgeous eyes like watching the beautiful sun rising.
"Something smells nice" I sleepily grinned.
"I thought I make the effect while you and the urchin were sleeping" Lucifer replied.
I looked at all the tasty food he has made for us and noticed that he has created the same, delicious smoothie and indicated, "You don't have to make the smoothie all the time, you know, I can have some other drinks."
"Well, I just to make sure that you are in a healthy fit and you got all the protein" Lucifer answered in a voice that sounded sweeter than honey. I usually see Lucifer act professionally sometimes at the precinct whenever the work became too serious, but I don't think I have seen him act quite professionally in our personal lives. Unless he's trying to do the wrong things for the right reasons.
"Thank you, though, it is very tasty" I took a big sip from the smoothie and licked my lips, "I'm sorry you had to sleep on the couch."
"Oh, not to worry, I have slept on the couch so many times with…" Lucifer answer casually until his last words dried. I raised him a suspicious eyebrow while giving Lucifer a death stare waiting to hear how he would end that sentence. I had a feeling that one of the words he was about to use was either 'many people' or 'men' or 'women.'
With a wit mind, Lucifer quickly recovered, "With me. I have slept on the couch many times alone. And sometimes with you."
"Well saved" I hummed in laughter when he winked at the end as Lucifer sigh in relief.
"Morning Lucifer" Trixie's sweet voice echoed within the kitchen as my daughter strolled up and stood next to me with still so much tiredness in her eyes.
"Morning urchin. I hope you had a good sleep" Lucifer smiled down at the child while setting up another breakfast plate for Trixie.
"Yeah. Your bed is super comfy" Trixie complimented meanwhile Lucifer served another plate filled with food to her.
"Come on, monkey, eat your breakfast" I encouraged her as Trixie sat down on a stool next to the kitchen island. Lucifer served my daughter a plate loaded with lovely food, and it didn't take long for Trixie to start eating.
"Mmm…" Trixie hummed in delight after taking in a mixture of boiled egg and toast into her small mouth. After chewing and swallowing her food, Trixie looks up to Lucifer and asked, "Lucifer, can we please have some chocolate cake for breakfast?"
"Trixie, I said we will not have any" I turned my head around and faced my daughter with a disapproved look as if she has already forgotten what I said to her earlier.
"Yeah, but Lucifer is more fun so he might" Trixie answered.
"Oh, thanks" I sarcastically replied.
"Well, she's not wrong, detective" Lucifer agreed as he grew a mischievous smirk which made me roll my eyes. I know Lucifer can be a little bit spoiled and he tries to spoil me sometimes and Trixie as well, but since we started dating, I think Trixie had the idea that she could have the life of Riley knowing that Lucifer is extremely rich.
"Alright, Trixie, eat your breakfast" I kindly instructed and eventually Trixie finishes her breakfast before putting her plate by the sink.
Once Trixie left the kitchen and left me and Lucifer alone again, I felt Lucifer's warm body approaching closer to me and standing next to my body. I still eating my breakfast unaware that Lucifer had an unease look on his face when he started speaking, "Detective, I've been thinking…"
"That sounds dangerous" I joked and we both chuckled.
"But I was wondering about when the baby comes" Lucifer finished his sentence.
"Oh, really?" I raised my head in surprise, which I shouldn't be really. I knew that we have to talk about the baby, but I wanted to wait until Lucifer was ready to talk more about our plans.
"Yes" Lucifer proudly nodded.
"What is it?" I asked, feeling ready to listen to his words before I took another sip of my delicious smoothie. Until he asked…
"What if you moved in?"
The bombshell exploded right at my face and the shock detonated in my lungs as it harshly impelled all of the air out through my mouth and forced me to spit out the smoothie. Lucifer took an inch step away from my unexpected reaction as I spat out the smoothie bits at the bottom of the blue apron.
"Dear me, detective, I thought you're more of someone who swallows than spit" Lucifer slightly joked while acting surprised.
I took in a few deep breathes to adjust to the unforeseen question before getting off the stall and standing up steadily and locking eyes with Lucifer as I gawked and stuttered in a breathless tone, "Move… Move in… As in move in here? In the penthouse?"
"Yes, it would be terrific. What do you think?" Lucifer cheerfully suggested.
"Yeah. It's… Um…" my eyes were still filled with shock as I literally had no words to say except this, "It's a good idea."
"It would be a splendid idea" Lucifer rephrased my words as he sounded very passionate about it.
I nodded with a stunned look, "Yes, but-"
"Mum!" Trixie's voice interrupted the awkward moment which I was quite grateful for. She dashed up to me with her iPhone in her hand showing me her text messages, "Julia said she and her mum are going to the aquarium this weekend. And she said I can come."
"Oh, yeah baby, that sounds great" I smiled at Trixie's request. She leaped in excitement before taking off again leaving me alone in a baffled spot while my mind was still tangled with Lucifer's question.
I didn't want to leave Lucifer hanging with no answer, but I wasn't even sure about what to say at that moment. To face him with a straight and honest face, "Okay, Lucifer, I want to talk about this later, please. Just not now, okay?"
"Of course" Lucifer accepted as he must have known how big this was for me.
"Great. See you later at the precinct" I leaned forward and kissed him on his left cheek before walking away.
I held a gentle grin to smooth the awkwardness but when I left the room that grin melted away. Lucifer's single question was rapidly repeated in my head as I still couldn't believe what he asked of me. Wasn't sure if this was because of the pregnancy, but I was getting a massive headache making my mind quiver in confusion. At first, Lucifer was scared about the whole baby thing and then gradually he came around to it, and now he suddenly suggested that we should live together.
I should have finished that smoothie. Or a cup of coffee. Or something stronger.
Later that day, I drove down the busy streets of L.A and dropped off Trixie to meet her friend, Julia for their trip at the aquarium then I travelled down to the precinct. I walked down the stairs to the precinct which was half-crowned with police officers and a few normal people either as arrest suspects or witnesses. Halfway down the stairs, I quickly spotted Dan standing by his desk and I realised that I haven't talked to him in a while since I'd been a bit distracted with Lucifer and the pregnancy.
I walked over to him and smiled, "Morning Dan."
"Hey Chloe. How are you?" He replied.
"Oh, I'm good, just-" I stopped my answer midway when I realised what Dan doing; packing his stuff from his desk into a big, white cardboard box. I gave him a questionable look, "What are you doing?"
"Switching desks with McMillan" he answered.
"What? Why? McMillan's under the stairs" I was bemused by his decision as I glanced over his shoulder to see McMillan's desk that was covered in light shadows as the staircase was blocking the sunlight from that angle.
"Yep. It's cosy. Not that dark" Dan explained with a false grin.
"And as far away from Lucifer as possible. What happened? Did he steal your pudding again?" I joked at the last bit, but deep down I should have known not to joke when I could already sense that Dan was certainly not in a good mood.
"No. People don't get killed or betrayed over stolen pudding, Chloe" Dan's voice swiftly became bitter and dark while talking in a mocking tone.
"Okay, Dan. I'm sorry…" calling out his name doesn't make him stop unpacking his stuff from the boxes. Calmly, I spoke in a more demanding tone, "Dan stop."
Gratefully, Dan followed my request and stopped packing before placing his full attention on my face as I continued, "Listen to me, what happened to Charlotte, it wasn't Lucifer's fault. You know that and…"
"Here's the deal, Chloe. It was funny at first. And I was charmed, just like everyone else around here. But after everything that we've been through, Lucifer is still always the one who jumps out first and leaves us in the dust. He acts out, he takes off and leaves, he does whatever the hell he wants and gets away with it" I felt his unscrupulous anger boiling in the core of his voice.
"That is not true" I shook my head. Obviously, Dan was talking about Lucifer's sudden absence when I find out I was pregnant, but he didn't understand Lucifer's real motives for leaving; to control the demons in Hell and Dan didn't understand that Lucifer didn't know about the baby until he arrived back.
"Remember the year you were kidnapped by that psycho priest? Somehow Lucifer was involved with Father Kinley and his freaky, blood-thirsty cult... don't you ever wonder what other secrets the guy's got? Or what else does he have that is so mess-up in his life?" Dan insolently argued like he was desperately trying to get me to see his point of view. He was adamant that Lucifer was the real bad guy in the story.
"Lucifer is like everyone else. He can do some crazy and stupid things at times, but he is a good man. And, saying that one horrible situation that caused an innocent's life was Lucifer's fault, that is insane Dan" I debated in a softer tone but Dan just rolled his eyes in disbelief, then I thought of something relatable that cross my mind.
"And you know what else, it reminds me of a time when a good man became part of a horrible situation that nearly cost some lives" I stepped closer to Dan to show how ruthless I can be in this meaningless quarrel before I released a small but sharp word, "Palmetto."
That single word glued his lips together and forced his prepared argument back into his mouth. Dan had nothing to say in his defence because he knew I was right when he realised that his involvement with Malcolm at Palmetto has caused some serious damage to our relationship, and me and Trixie nearly lost our lives because of it.
"Think about that, Dan. Because it nearly coasts my life, and Lucifer's life, and don't forget your daughter's life" I viciously hissed before walking away and left him drown in his own regret.
A part of me was thinking that I might have stepped too far or crossed far over the line of insulting his vulnerability because I should recall that Dan was still in deep grief since Charlotte's death. But, I didn't want him to forget that I am too in a vulnerable state with being pregnant and, not to his knowledge, carrying a half-angel baby. And so was Lucifer since he is trying to learn about having a baby and that it will be his first time being a father.
From the corner of my eye, I spotted a figure walking in the forensic lab and assumed Ella was in working on her science stuff and forensic tests. I was actually pleased to know that Ella was in because there was so much going through my mind, it would be a relief to get it all out and chat about it to a friend. And, Ella would be the perfect friend to listen and help me talk through everything; such as Lucifer's offer about moving in and Dan's ridiculous accusations.
"Hey Ella" I walked into the lab and my smile instantly faded away with I noticed it wasn't Ella. It was a guy of a similar age to Ella's, except he has brown hair and was wearing round glasses.
"Oh, hi. Sorry, Miss Ella isn't in today" the other guy answered as he was typing on his own silver laptop.
"She's off sick?" I asked which is sort of a shock to me because I couldn't recall a time when Ella actually took a day off work.
"Apparently, she had a family emergency and needed to go to Detroit" he explained.
"Okay, thanks anyway" I nodded with a friendly grin before exiting the lab.
Closed my eyes and sigh in annoyance after realising that Ella wasn't working today because I desperately needed to talk to someone about everything that has been happening.
I walked over to my desk and looked over the flat surface to find a short pile of files, I knew that the top file was my new murder case. It would probably be best as it could keep my mind busy, because truthfully, I didn't really want to think about Lucifer's offer or Dan's childish attitude at the moment. I sat down at my desk and open the files up, at the same time I heard my name being called out by a sexy, British voice, "Detective!"
"Oh, hi Lucifer" I put up a smile to find my irritation.
Lucifer stood by my desk and leaned forward and asked, "So, have you been thinking about what I asked?"
"Um, I little bit" I answered with honest words because I know Lucifer cares for the truth. Lucifer seemed pleased and I see in his brown eyes that he was expecting me to say something more about my final decision. However, I still don't have my full answer yet so I thought of a small distraction, "But, now I've been assigned to a new case."
I lifted up the new file and asked, "You coming?"
"Of course, after you detective" Lucifer smiled and lifted his hand up to give me access to walk past him and lead the way towards the stairs, and quietly, I deeply sigh in relief.
Ella's Pov
I ran. I just ran.
That red face was haunting my mind.
Took off in my car and travelled straight to Detroit where I crashed on the couch at my older brother, Ricardo's apartment. I only explained to him that he needed to get away from a horrific case which deeply spooked me and thankfully Ricardo didn't question on it as he could see that I was in an impotent state.
The next day, I visited my childhood catholic church where I always felt safe and secure. Since I was a little girl, I gradually deposit my entire faith in an unseen deity, believing that if a good person devotes their mind and soul to God then he should surely create a good future for you. Being raised in a family of troublemakers, I tried to crawl my way out of my genetic darkness, hoping that I could become a better person with a greater need to lead a simple life.
Now, knowing that all this time that instead of walking down the good path, I have been misled by the Devil himself. I used to say that perhaps the Devil had a misunderstanding story from the Bible until I saw that burnt face and those red eyes. My mind was scarred by the images of that red face made of deep burn marks, it was like looking at a mirror and it reflects all the evilness and darkness.
After walking in and dipping the tip of my fingers into a stoup and did 'The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit' sign, I kneed down in a narrow gap between two, long pews in the church and rested my elbows on the top side of the bench and glued my hands together. Rested my forehead against my hands and closed my downcast eyes while quietly saying a little prayer to God. My tired eyes glanced up at the wooden crucifix of Jesus nailed to the cross.
"Dear Lord" I whispered.
"If you are real, which I believe now that you are. Then you will know how much I have put all my faith in you. Hoping that it would take off me a darker route, away from my past" I started off as I nailed my focus on the wooden crucifix.
"But, I've failed. Knowing that I am much closer to my darkness, now realising that I have been led by the Devil" my lips trembled at the very thought. I thought I'd made a great friend within the workplace and he became like a brother to me, and now I've realised that it was all fake.
"And, that means I'm… I'm going to Hell. That I'm already so gone" I burst into tears as I parted my hands and leaned my anguish head down till my forehead touches the top edge of the pew. Releasing all my pain and sorrows through my sobs and in every teardrop.
"I need guides, I need a sign, I need anything!" I loudly begged while hearing my cries echoing within the empty church. I wept out my deepest fears, "I've lost faith. I've lost hope. But now I'm begging you, please help me."
"I'm so lost" my weak words vanished into thin air and all there was left were more sobs and tears.
My loneliness was the only company within the empty church, but I never realised that it wasn't true at that moment. Behind me was a tall figure walking down the shadowy aisle so slowly like a lion stalking through long grass. I didn't pay much attention but the figure gradually stop and stood by the end of my pew chair.
"Ella Lopez" I recognised that voice, it sounded different but I definitely knew that voice, I slowly turned my head around in fear to face the speaker, "Your prayers have been answered."
My wet eyes scanned the shadowy figure, but I mostly caught the sighting of his familiar but diabolical face, it was Lucifer but he was wearing a turtleneck top beneath a tweed jacket and he had a long scar diagonally across his face. But my instinct kicks in, it was Lucifer, the actual Devil.
"Lucifer. Diablo!" I cursed at the wicked creature before me, while standing up and stumbling backwards on pew. When I saw his scarred face, I was quickly reminded of that horrific face I saw last night.
"I am not Lucifer" the creature raised his hand to calm me down, but I was still afraid. He pointed his finger to the long scar on his face and spoke more in his innocent voice, "You see, my twin brother did this to me. He scarred me with hatred for I am his opposite. The good to his bad."
My mind was becoming more puzzled than it was before, I shook my head and exclaimed, "Then, who are you?"
"I'm the Archangel Michael" the amicable man pulled his hands together and pressed his palms against each other in a prayer position.
"The Archangel? God's warrior?" I was blinking so fast thinking that this was all in my head, that it was all just a hallucination. And, God, I wish that I was right so that Lucifer didn't have a monstrous face or in fact the real Devil himself.
"I am" he nodded.
Somehow, I could already sense that he was telling the truth because he was talking in an American accent and Lucifer usually speaks in a British accent. And the scar across his face was an obvious clue.
"I know that you're struggling. Scared that befriending the Devil will promise you eternal suffering in Hell" I was taken by his sedating voice as Michael slowly unravelled all of my fears. I lowered my head in shame until Michael added, "But, there is still redemption as my father, the Lord himself, has heard your cries and has offered you a chance to right your wrongs."
"How?" I raised my head as a little bit of hope splashed upon my face.
Michael whispered, "Chloe Decker."
"Chloe?" I spoke her name in a breathe of fear after realising what a deep, dark pit she was trapped in. My breathing became heavy as I finally realised something which made me cover my mouth with my hand. I gasped, "Oh, God. She's… she's carrying the Antichrist."
"She has been poisoned and controlled by evil himself" Michael clarified, "I understand your deep love and respect for your friends and family. And you wish to protect them. There is a way for you to do the right thing Miss Lopez, to save them from the eternal damnation."
"What can I do?" I asked. Knowing that I have a good advantage from an angel who could help me save me and my friends and I must take it.
"Kill Lucifer" he calmly propounded.
"What?" I quietly gasped.
"If you kill him. Lucifer will go back down to Hell where he cannot return to harm anyone anymore" Michael explained the ideal plan, but I wasn't sure, to be honest.
My tired head was still progressing with all the information I was received since meeting Michael. My anxious eyes lowered down my stare to the floor and Michael see my worries paint all over my pale face, "You're worried."
"I'm just not sure about what to do" I replied as I slightly shake my head.
I've been torturing myself about what to do and now Michael, a powerful angel, is here to help me. But the idea of eliminating Lucifer, who may be the Devil but still a living being and who I befriended in the past few years, doesn't agree with my standard of service to God.
"Perhaps think about Chloe" Michael eloquently tried to make my hesitant mind focus back on Chloe. Reminding me that she was entrapped in a much deepest and darkest pit and she was all alone. I was feeling apprehensive about her future and what could Chloe do now that her malignant fate lies in the appalling hands of the Devil. I can't imagine what she's going through now that she's literally carrying the Devil's child. Michael continued, "Lucifer has manipulated her since the beginning. My brother has twisted her, toyed with her, used her, and now impregnated Chloe with something that will destroy her. And, possibly destroy others in the future."
"All because of Lucifer" Michael snarled in disgust when he mentioned his brother's name.
I did have some small doubts about the idea of Lucifer being portrayed as the foul Devil we all know today. But after listening to Michael's unsettling words, my heart has lost all faith in my dear friend and have finally made up my mind about what Lucifer truly was. A lair. A fraud. A monster.
"It can be avoided, Ella. However, as an angel, I am forbidden to get involved with mortal affairs" Michael stepped closer towards me and pressed his palm to the centre of his chest.
"But you, Ella Lopez, you can save Chloe and all those lost souls" he proudly preach with a friendly smile as Michael raised his arm and pointed his hand directly at me. I felt like I was hit by a sudden wave of warmth and hope when I listened to the smooth sound of his calm voice.
My gaze dropped down to the ground again as I tried to think really hard about this. Realising what my duty was and how important it was. If I help Michael with this mission, then perhaps his father, God, might help me and grant me another chance to get me off this dark and gnarly path. I looked up at Michael with a straight face and asked, "How do I kill him?"
