A/N As Skarloey and Rheneas are brothers in the books, Duke and Bertram are in the show.

Bertram was broken-hearted. His brother, Duke had died and he had no will to live. He had frequent crying spells of constantly sobbing, just bawling his eyes out. His driver pressed a cloth to his eyes and offered comforting words, doing his best to help Bertram though his grief-induced depression.

"You can rely on my help and compassion in your heartbreak, Bertram," he said to the little old engine, drying his tears during his first crying spell. He rubbed his engine's cheeks, then pressed the cloth to his weeping eyes, feeling empathy for him, as he tuned into the little engine's emotions.

Bertram released wailing sobs, as loud and hard as he could. He sniffled hard, coughed, choked on his tears and hiccupped. He gasped and gulped, shaking as huge tears poured from his eyes, not once stopping, as many and as fast as possible and allowed his driver's comfort still.

He said, as he continued to wipe the tears away, " I know you're dreadfully grieved about your brother, Bertram. So, I shall be attentive to your needs and do my best to offer comfort and practical help. You can cry to me, when I'm with you and when you do, I'm here for you. You can trust me to dry your eyes. Cry it out. I care about you and want to help you feel better, so you've got my support and comfort in your grief.". He wiped all his engine's tears away as best he could.

Bertram's tears and bawling sobs went on until he could cry no more. His driver dried his last tears away, wiping his cheeks and eyes dry.

Bertram became very ill, so that night, he said "To the one in charge of The Big Railway In the Sky, take me to my brother. I've got no will to live without him, because I'm just depressed and old on top of being very ill."

Bertram was found dead, so a meeting of his friends was called at the Steamworks. The other narrow-gauge engines, along with Toby and Thomas were there.

Bertram's controller said, dabbing his eyes, "Bertram's died of a broken heart. We checked him at the Steamworks to determine a cause of death and it seems he was too depressed to live, in addition to being ill.". Bertram's crew were in tears as well.

Bertram's friends buffer pressed and cried together, at least if they were willing to cry around so many others, comforted by their drivers.

Thomas gave a tearful speech about Bertram's death. His driver pressed a cloth to his eyes as the tank engine said, "I once thought he was a ghost at the mine, but found out he was just Bertram, an old engine who worked at the mine and was left there. Toby became friends with him and I know he's very sad. I quite dislike my friends being sad, but I know it's a part of life. We must carry on and be Really Useful Engines until we join him on The Big Railway In the Sky, if he believed.". He continued to cry, shedding big tears and sniffling until his emotions were spent.

Toby, as his closest standard-gauge friend, went off somewhere to be with just his crew and Thomas, after that. The tram cried his heart out, until he had no more tears to shed. Because he was on the timid side, he hadn't wanted to cry around all the others, unlike Thomas. Toby had pressed Thomas's buffers as the latter sniffled out his speech. Thomas now did the same and Toby's driver offered comforting words as he dried his engine's tears with a cloth.

The narrow-gauge railway was closed to allow the engines time to grieve and have a memorial service for Bertram. Toby and Thomas came, buffer pressing as Toby cried in the back of the group. The railway re-opened and Julie replaced Bertram. She was quiet, creative, gentle and optimistic.

A/N Toby and Bertram are canonically friends, but I'm not sure how many of the other engines are his friends. Thomas doesn't like his friends being sad, so he feels bad about Toby being sad, given Toby's his friend. Memorial services for engines are outdoors, at a place with lines for both gauges if needed, like this time it was for the narrow-gauge engines, along with Thomas and Toby.
