Meaning: Mystery, elegance

For someone who spends so much time in the public spotlight, Zatanna is quite the phantom.

People think they can read her just off what they see on stage, but there's far more to her than meets the eye. And most people who think they know her haven't even come close to scratching the surface.

She likes it that way. She's always kept her cards close to the chest, only ever dropping the odd dime when she felt like it. She gets that from her father. Only a small handful of people have ever met the real her, and fewer still have had the privilege of seeing the magician in her entirety.

She's had a bit of a rough day. Her producer just told her they'd need to lay her off for a few weeks due to the financial crisis, not to mention the fact that she was supposed to be meeting with her dad before this, but scheduling conflicts with Khalid forced Giovanni back into the helm to cover for him. Needless to say it was a pretty shitty Wednesday, even by her standards.

But the show must go on.

She hides the emotions behind a charming smile, the way she always does on stage. Nobody in the crowd seems to notice, which is good. She doesn't want their experiences to be hindered by her personal troubles, especially not when people have given their hard-earned money to see her tonight.

But still, she can't deny the fact that a small part of her wishes she didn't have to hide right now.

Zatanna gives the crowd an elegant bow and winks with a tip of her top hat. It's a new look she's trying, and she wants to see if it's a bit much. Her eyes scan over the audience, and she sees exuberance and delight littering the crowd. But there's one that stands out to her. She recognizes him almost immediately and feels her heart jump a bit. He's watching her from his seat up on the top row, smiling like all the rest except his smile is laced with clear concern.

She should've known she can't fool him. He knows her too well. But maybe that's not a bad thing.

After the show she'll explain everything to him. And she knows he'll find some way to make her feel better because he always does.

But for now, she'll stay hidden behind the mask of mystery. After all, the show must go on.

"So who's ready to have some magic tonight?"
