Part 17
Caitlin was sitting by the fountain in the garden when Barry found her.
"May I join you?" he asked
"Of course. I guess you have some questions."
"As do you. So the stories are true. You are descended from Khione."
"Yes. What about you? I have heard two different rumors. Some say your family is descended from the Greek god Hermes some say the Hindu god Savitar."
"It's Hermes. Charlie doesn't have powers does he?"
"No but if he has a daughter she could. For some reason it is only female members of my family that can get these powers. How does it work with yours?"
"Anyone can get them. My dad doesn't have them but Jay does so does Jesse."
"Barry, when my mother finds out that I used my powers to help Eddie she will not be happy."
"You don't need to worry about her. Even if we don't marry, you can stay here as long as you wish."
"Thank you. Do you know why that woman wanted to harm me?"
"She is obsessed with me. She is under the impression that if you are out of the picture then I would take her as a lover. Do you know what my parents would do if I had a lover that I got pregnant? That would cause a major scandal and I could be removed as heir. That would really make Jesse angry. You don't want to see her angry."
"I never doubted that you would do something like that. My father is not very religious but he does believe that wedding vows should be honored."
"So do my parents. Not everyone in my family's past has believed that. But I was raised that way. Caitlin, I am sorry that you were in danger. Eddie took an oath and that is why he jumped in front of you."
"I know, I wanted him to spend some time with Patty so I haven't seen him. But she knows that she may answer his questions about me. Patty was one of the few friends I had as a child. Charlie's bride Erin is someone else that I consider a friend. Now that includes you. I believe that if two people marry they should at least be friends. My parents aren't friends they only married because they were told to. My mother I don't think ever wanted to marry anyone least of all my father."
"Caitlin, I don't know what to do to make you happy. But I am going to do everything I can to try."
"Barry, you do make me happy. This past month has been one of the best times in my life. Barry I told my father that I would do whatever is best for my people. Unlike my mother if we end up getting married out of duty I will not see it as a hardship. I already see you as a friend which is more then I can say about my mother. By the way Barry it is just in public like in the city that I would prefer that you don't use a shortened version of my name. When it is just the two of us or your family and Patty it is fine to call me Cait. I know I am all over the place. But the fact is this is all new to me."
"It's new to me too. I mean yes I have been on dates but I only went because I had to. I didn't like the girls. My dad's advisor Harrison thought it would be good for me to find one of the young ladies of the court to be my bride."
"He sounds like my mother. She forced me to spend time with guys I had no intention of ever marrying. They would have made me miserable. But you don't have to worry about that."
"That is good. Have you gone to see Eddie yet?"
"No. I am kind of nervous. I never used my powers in front of anyone who was not family or close to us before today."
"You do know that he will not betray you. The oath he took to my family extends to you."
"I know. It is just hard for me to deal with this."
"Cait, it is ok to be. But I know that Eddie would be happy to see that you really are ok."
"I guess that it would be good to let the Lieutenant know that he is good at his job."
"It would help his ego. You know how these guards are."
"Yeah I do."
"Then let's go."
Caitlin stood up and followed Barry into the palace to head to the medical ward to see Eddie.
Zoom glared at his men. He was not happy. When they ran into that unit that had been formed by a mix of soldiers from the Snow Kingdom and Central Kingdom, they had been forced to abandon most of their tents and he had to leave his conquest behind. But after forcing himself on her every day since he first took her he had little doubt that she now carried his child. A son hopefully that he would take from her and train to lead his army once he was old enough.
"My Lord what are we going to do? I mean we had to leave a lot behind." Said Mardon
"We will make camp and change plans. I won't be going to the idiot Prince's wedding after all. I know the girl will talk. I should have cut her tongue from her mouth when I had the chance."
"Maybe you should have killed her before we fled."
"I am confident that she is carrying my son. So I need her alive long enough to give birth."
"If she is knocked up with a girl."
"Then I kill them both. I have no use for a girl."
Mardon just nodded. He just hoped that he would never end up on the wrong end of Zoom's temper. He had seen Zoom angry before and nothing good ever came of it.
