I don't own Loonatics Unleashed
Enjoy!
On such a beautiful sunny day, Duck walked Miranda to the studio where she was going to rehearse with the girls and head to the competition. He would risk being a bit late for work but this was a good excuse for him to avoid going there. Miranda had protested, for she didn't want him to get into trouble, but Duck had insisted and he had won the argument.
"I really enjoyed our night last week," Miranda spoke up as they came closer to the dance studio, "I hope that we have the chance to do it again soon."
It had been quite the enjoyable time that he had spent with Miranda. The two of them took a walk around Acmetropolis, spent the rest of the afternoon at a park, ate dinner at a place that they had never been to before, which to Miranda's surprise he had offered to pay, and finished the rest of the night by heading to a club where they danced until they couldn't anymore. It was a night where he and Miranda had felt the happiest. During that night, nothing crossed his mind that would interfere with his mood and his girlfriend was dancing her heart out and enjoying every moment of it. The upbeat music was fun to dance to, but the moment the slow dancing music came on, it was the most intimate and enjoyable for both. He ought to do more of those surprising night outs with her. At least they had both been happy that night. Those fun nights would have to wait for now. He just needed to accumulate some more cash and save up.
"Me too," Duck said as he put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close to him for a side hug. He then looked up when they arrived at the front building of the studio. "Good luck today," he said to her. "You're gonna do great."
"It's not hip hop but we'll see how it goes. I keep fumbling with the steps that they do," Miranda said as she adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder.
"You practiced all week. Here and at home," Duck reminded her, "you got this."
At least someone believed in her more than she did. "Thanks Duck," she smiled at him, "I'll see you later today." She held onto his hands tightly and looked in his eyes with a slight smile upon her beak. "After this competition is over, I'm gonna take a break. Olivia has become too much."
He didn't blame her on that. "One thing I can tell you, she's not that great of a dancer anyway."
Miranda scoffed at his words. "She is and both you and I know it," she said to him.
"I meant that she can't do hip hop the way you can," he said to her. "Get in there and show them the kind of duck you're made of. Make me proud." He pulled her closely and kissed the top of her head before letting her go.
Miranda gave him one last smile as she headed inside the studio and she kept looking at him the moment he turned around and walked down the street. She didn't know why but her intuition told her that this may be the last time she would ever see him.
As he walked to the pool, Duck wished that he could be at the studio. Miranda needed some support and he knew that she wasn't going to get it from her group. It was either being with her, which is what he wanted, or risk getting fired. He noticed that the lifeguard chair was vacant. This 'lifeguard' really wasn't doing that great of a job leaving his seat empty. Seeing this as his opportunity, Duck climbed up the chair and sat down overlooking the pool and seeing if anyone needed help. So far, so good. Maybe now would be the time that someone would see his potential.
Just sitting on that chair boosted up his ego. He imagined himself heroically jumping into the pool and saving lives and people thanking him for doing something so brave. "The handsome lifeguard sits calm, yet focused," he found himself narrating his little fantasy. "Confident that should danger arrive he stands ready to protect the lives—"
"Yo Duck," a voice interrupted him as Duck felt his body flinch at the voice of the lifeguard.
It was good while it lasted he thought to himself as he took off the pair of sunglasses that he wore and looked over at the lifeguard making his way towards him.
"Get outta my chair and do you job!" the lifeguard said.
Duck felt a hand grab him by the back of the shirt and pull him out of the chair.
"Pool boy," the lifeguard taunted him, "and make sure you use the net." He placed the net in Duck's hands and pushed him towards the pool.
Duck stumbled towards the edge of the pool but caught himself from falling inside. Anger boiled up inside of him as he clung tightly onto the handle of the net and gritted his teeth in anger. "Use the net, use the net," he mimicked the lifeguard. "Talk about a waste of talent."
That was it! This job was something that he was never going to get used to no matter how much time he spent working here. Just until the pool season was over, he was going to get out of this place and go elsewhere. He didn't know where but any place was better than Acmetropolis. Maybe there was a place where there was a decent job where he could easily get rich and live a better life and wasting his time as the pool boy. He didn't know if Miranda felt the same, she had never expressed any desire about leaving to him before. Though if she wanted a career as a dancer, Duck knew that she wasn't going to get anywhere by just being here.
He felt some weight inside the net as he lifted it off the pool and had a look of disgust upon his face. "Ugh," he groaned when the object that he lifted was a diaper, "another treasure from the deep."
He heard the cries of toddler as his mother approached Duck and picked up the diaper from the net. Duck internally shuddered when he saw that. "Just put me out of my misery!"
From his peripheral vision, he noticed a bright light making its way towards Acmetropolis. "What the—" he yelled and didn't bother to see the people by the pool evacuating. Was that a meteor that he just saw.
The meteor hit part of the city and a shockwave was sent towards the perimeter. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding!" Duck yelled, wishing that he could take back the words he had just said. He felt the head making its way towards his feather and then he felt the shockwave.
The shockwave was potent enough to send him flying a couple of feet and into the lifeguard chair. He felt his body growing weak from the impact as he slowly opened his eyes and saw nothing but a blur.
So, this is how I end Duck thought to himself as he felt his eyelids getting heavy. God he was never going to see Miranda again and that made his heart ache.
