A mysterious blonde woman that donned a maroon-colored hooded cape stared at the destroyed streets of Acmetropolis in horror. She couldn't believe how it had come to this! After fleeing from her planet, she thought that coming to Acmetropolis would help her get away from her power-hungry brother. However, her brother had been smart to track her where she had fled and in response, he had sent a meteor to destroy her.
Unbelievable she thought as she looked from one distraught citizen to the next. It was going to take a long time to bring this city back to the way it once was. She felt guilty that she had been the cause of all of this, but she had to flee somewhere. She was aware that it wouldn't be too long until her brother realized that she was alive and would most likely do everything to make sure that she was gone. She wasn't going to allow that. After the devastation that her brother had caused, she was going to do everything in her power to make sure that she kept these people safe.
As her eyes surveyed the area once more, she turned to head to a different direction and was almost run over when a gurney zipped past her with a mink lying down who screamed that she wouldn't be able to dance ever again. That was a curious thing to see. Anthropomorphic animals with human-like qualities? Science had really evolved from the last couple of years. If this was one anthropomorphic animal, would there be others? Curious, she followed the gurney that disappeared inside an ambulance, heading over to the hospital.
Ace Bunny didn't want to stay in a hospital bed. Getting up from the hospital bed, the moment he placed his feet on the cold floor, he wobbled but quickly regained his strength. At least all the time that he had practiced at being a stunt bunny, was paying off on his balance. He assumed that he wouldn't be allowed to leave his suite, but if he was going to watch another news segment, he was going to go crazy! Slowly, he made his way towards the door and stood out in the halls of the hospital.
He was shocked. Many of the victims were out in the halls as nurses and doctors tried to tend to as many as they could. All the other suites had been filled at capacity and there was only so many patients this hospital was able to take. Ace cringed at the sight and he felt awful for what these people were going through, but it was unavoidable. His ears picked up their moans and his eyes saw the blood that came out from their wounds.
God help 'em was all that he could think. He looked over when he noticed a little child who was weeping. He swallowed and walked over to the little child. "What's the matter kid?" he asked him.
The child looked up and was taken aback when he noticed a rabbit speaking to him.
"Don't worry," Ace said as he knelt to the floor on one knee and looked at him, "just wanted to check in on you. What's going on? It was quite scary what happened out there, huh?"
The slight surprise passed the child as he nodded his head. "Yeah," the kid agreed, "my parents are with the doctors."
God, I hope they'll be okay Ace thought as a look of sympathy passed his eyes. This kid was worried sick about them. "I'm sure they're alright," he said to him.
"How do you know, Mr. Bunny?" the kid asked him.
"Ace," he introduced himself to the kid, "Mr. Bunny is my father. Well, you're in one of the greatest hospitals in all Acmetropolis. The nurses and the doctors are doing all they can to make sure they're alright. You gotta be a warrior for your parents. They need all the support from their little guy, right? If you're strong for them, they'll be strong too."
He noticed that a small smile came upon the little kid's lips. That's what people wanted to hear. A little bit of empowerment to help them get through something like this. "They'll be alright, kiddo," Ace said to him. "And you will too."
"Mr. Bunny?" a nurse spoke as Ace looked over and saw the nurse standing right in front of him and the child "What are you doing out here? You're supposed to be in bed!"
"It's all good, doc," Ace assured the nurse with a slight smile upon his lips, "just having a conversation with my new buddy here." He gave the child a nod of his head followed by a courageous grin. "Stay strong kid. You will all get through this." He then turned his attention over the nurse and said, "even my arm is doin' dandy." He emphasized by moving his arm and then flinching at the pain that shot throughout his whole arm.
The nurse gently smiled at the rabbit and walked up to him. "Why don't we head back to our hospital bed?" she suggested, "I think it would do you good to remain there for a little bit."
He didn't want to but it wouldn't be wise to argue with the nurse. She was the expert and knew a lot more than he did in this field. As he walked along with the nurse, he looked up and noticed a curious figure walking down the halls. This figure sported a maroon-colored hooded cape and had her eyes casted to the floor. For a mere second, both he and this woman exchanged a look and she disappeared down the long hallway of the hospital.
Even though he had no idea whom that woman was, Ace couldn't help but feel that something was going to happen sooner or later.
So, her intuition had been correct.
After following the ambulance to this hospital, she had been exposed to a good number of these anthropomorphic animals. She had first seen a Tasmanian devil who was having a conversation with his nurse. She didn't know how the nurse was able to comprehend him, but it was sweet that she was engaging in a conversation with someone that others deemed to be a monster.
The next room she had passed was a family of roadrunners and it was a grateful sight to see. That injured roadrunner was surrounded with a family that loved him, unlike hers who had tried to kill her.
The next suite she was passed, she had witnessed a coyote who exchanged insightful conversations with a wolf. She didn't know what they were talking about but at least he had some company to keep him busy.
In the other suite, she noticed a female rabbit sitting upright on her hospital bed surrounded by her parents and another set of rabbits that stood by her side. Whatever conversation they were having, she could see that the blonde rabbit was bought into good spirits when she let out a lighthearted laugh.
Lastly, there was that gray rabbit that she had exchanged a look with. There was something about that rabbit that she took notice of. His face showed a lot of empathy for the victims. To her, it seemed like he wanted to do something to help them but didn't have the right tools to do it. And the way that he consoled that child. It was very kindhearted of him to do so.
Just then, the woman stopped in her steps when she noticed a duck that stood by a hospital suite with a pair of crutches under his arms. There was a forlorn look upon his eyes as he just stared at the window and didn't move when the nurse placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Mr. Duck," the nurse said, "we have to go to your suite."
"I'm not going anywhere," he simply answered the nurse.
The woman adjusted her position in the hall and got a better look of what was going on within the window. Inside, there was a female duck lying comfortable in a hospital bed. There was a ventilator next to her to help her breathe.
"What did the doctor's say?" Duck asked the nurse.
At first, the nurse had hesitated to tell him about her condition, due to her not knowing of the relationship that they had. When Duck had confirmed that he was her significant other, she had told him that they had found her lying on the ground by the dance studio. She had suffered a severe head injury and had fallen into a coma. He had been instant on wanting to go inside the suite and be with her. The nurse had never seen anyone so instant nor dramatic as him before. The two had reached a compromise that he was to visit her from just the window view, and eventually would go in to see her.
"They still need to run some tests on her," the nurse said to him, "to see how severe her injury is."
"I meant is she going to die!" Duck snapped at her nurse, angry of the fact that no one in this hospital was able to understand him and angry that anyone that was close to him either left him or wound up dead. He knew that life was not fair, but it had been very unfair to him and he knew that he didn't deserve that.
"Let's not think that way," the nurse said to him, "there have been cases where people have made a full recovery and were unaffected by it."
"I don't care about them! I care about her!" Duck snapped at the nurse again. "Do everything you can to bring her back!"
This was a common reaction that she had been faced with ever since she had worked in this hospital and she couldn't blame any family member or significant other from feeling that way that they did. Keeping a calm demeanor, she gave him a gentle nod of her head. "The doctors are doing everything they can. Come now, you need to lie down."
"Leave me alone," Duck simply said to the nurse. "I just…want to stay here for a bit."
"Five minutes," the nurse simply stated in an authoritative tone of voice as she took a step back and left the duck alone.
As for the woman, she was glad that she was out of sight to let the duck have his space. This meteor…it had affected the lives of so many and yet, she wasn't able to turn back the time to stop it from happening.
