I don't own Loonatics Unleashed
Enjoy!
Acmetropolis may have been rather quiet during the last couple of weeks, but trees, different types of plants, and buildings were slowly beginning to be restored. Slowly but surely, the city was beginning to look like how it had been before the meteor struck. Each afternoon, Rev tried to set some time aside to help the citizens in restoring the trees at the park. The last time he had helped, there hadn't been many trees nor flowers planted, but right now the place was getting better and better each day. Imagine how beautiful the place was going to look when it was in full bloom. He had hoped that the rest of his teammates would be willing to join him on some of this volunteer work but it seemed their interests lied elsewhere in training.
He had shrugged it off and decided to go ahead and do it himself. After quickly digging a hole in the ground, he went ahead to pick up a sapling plant and his arms almost failed him when he noticed how heavy the object was. Maybe asking for five saplings was a little bit excessive he thought to himself. He couldn't return them now, even after he paid for them. Wherever that money was going, he hoped that it would be for a good cause.
"Need some help over there, Rev?" a voice asked as a look of shock crossed over Rev's face.
The roadrunner turned around and when he noticed whom it was, a smile formed upon his beak. He zipped over to the source of the voice. "Lexi!" he exclaimed, "I-thought-you-were-busy-with-training."
"Ah," Lexi said as she waved her hand in the air, "I could use a break. I can play hard just as I work hard." Her green eyes looked around the park as a smile formed on her lips. "Wow, this place is coming along nicely." She then looked over at the saplings that Rev had bought. "You're gonna be planting all of those?"
Rev nodded his head. "I'm-just-trying-to-give-back-to-the-community," he answered her. "This-is-one-of-my-favorite-places."
This park had quite the calming nature to it as well as many sculptures that were made by local artists and students. It was a shame that the shockwave from the meteor had destroyed most of them. However, many of the artists and students had remade the sculptures and placed them back to their original place. It was nice to have that as a reminder of how Acmetropolis used to be. Just like Rev, Lexi enjoyed this park as well. On her weekend mornings, she would always come to this park and do her jogs for about an hour before heading back home to complete the rest of her routine. She wished that she had taken advantage of it and enjoyed the scenery that surrounded her, and how grateful she should have been to witness such beauty. One thing that this meteor taught her was to never take anything for granted. There were both good and bad things that happened in life but the most important thing that mattered was her and she had to look after herself.
"How come I never bumped into you here before?" she then asked Rev.
"I-was-probably-working," Rev answered her after digging another hole for the sapling. "Cookie-had-me-working-at-some-odd-hours-that-during-my-lunchtime,-I-was-able-to-come-here."
Ah, that was probably one of the reasons why she hadn't seen Rev then. In any case, she pointed over to the shovel. "Hand me that shovel. I wanna contribute."
Yes! One of his teammates was willing to join him on something that he enjoyed doing. He handed her the shovel and she gladly took it from him. Of course, her speed didn't match Rev's but the roadrunner could see that she was enjoying every step of the process. Once she had dug a hole that was deep enough for the sapling, Rev helped her by carrying the small tree and gently plopping it inside. Afterwards, the whole was filled back with the dug-up dirt and smoothly patted with the shovel.
"Now we wait for thirty years until it grows," Lexi commented as she motioned to the sapling with her hand.
It was going to take quite the long time and both he and Lexi were going to be old, but it was something that they planted and he hoped that the future generations would appreciate the work that had been put into restoring this park.
"Why wait for thirty years when you can have these trees blooming in a matter of weeks?"
Both Rev and Lexi turned around when they heard a voice behind them. There stood a red-haired woman sporting, what looked like, a long satin dark dress that hugged her figure and she held a small bottle in the palm of her hand.
Rev looked over at Lexi before he approached this mysterious woman. "In-weeks?" he asked her, "you-mean,-from-that-thing?" he pointed to the small bottle.
The woman didn't expect for this bird to talk so quickly, but she was able to understand what he asked. "Why yes," she answered him, her voice sounding a bit too aged for the features that she possessed. "Just a little drop of this and these trees will be beautiful."
Rev motioned to grab the bottle, but the moment than the woman allowed him to do so, he cupped the bottle in his hands and looked at it as if he was holding a foreign object. "What's-in-it?" he asked her.
"It's a little recipe of mine," the woman answered him, "I can't give out all of my family secrets."
Oh, so it was one of those family recipes that people enjoyed keeping a secret. Rev didn't understand why, but to each their own. "What-do-you-think-Lexi?" he asked the female rabbit, "should-we-give-it-a-try-on-the-trees?"
"Sure," Lexi nodded her head to Rev, "anything to restore the park back to its original state."
Rev turned around to thank the red-haired woman but was shocked when he didn't see her there. All there was left where she stood were a couple of strands of bristles. "Huh," Rev said, "did-you-see-where-she-went?"
Lexi answered him with a shake of her head. "Not sure, but I must say she had quite the good fashion sense. Black is always a classic color."
Rev didn't think too much on the woman's fashion. He uncorked the bottle and a delightful aroma made its way to his nose. "Ooh," he said as he held it close to his nose and took a long sniff, "that-smells-very-good!-This-will-make-the-trees-happy."
He slowly tipped the bottle towards one of the saplings and watched as a small drop of lavender liquid fell onto the soil and disappeared. He stared at the section where the liquid dissolved, thinking that he was going to get results right away.
"She said it was going to take a couple of weeks," Lexi reminded Rev, "why don't we go ahead and plant the rest of them and add the concoction to it?" she suggested as she took the bottle in her hands. The aroma also hit her nose and, just like Rev, she noticed how sweet it smelled. "Wow, it's very strong."
"Right," Rev said to her, "I-guess-that-lady-knew-what-she-was-doing."
"Too bad she didn't drop us the recipe," Lexi said, "I would've liked to have used that as a perfume." Of course, without the side effect of growing any leaves from her ears.
After planting the rest of the trees, Rev went ahead and added the rest of the liquid to them. "Depending-on-how-many-'weeks'-this-takes,-I-look-forward-on-how-they're-going-to-look-like!"
Lexi never took Rev to be an environmentalist, but she was glad that there was someone that cared about his hometown just as much as she did. Good or bad, it was still their home and either way, they had to remain here to protect it.
"You-know-what-we-should-do?" Rev suggested, "we-should-also-try-some-on-the-flowers!"
The excitement and amusement that he showed was compelling but she didn't want Rev going overboard by using that concoction. "Rev, wait!" Lexi called out as Rev went towards a rose bush and poured a drop of the liquid onto it.
If the trees took a while to grow due to their size, he wondered if the flowers were going to take less time to bloom. The moment that the liquid hit the flowers, he noticed the buds popping out of the ground and going into full bloom. "Lexi!" Rev pointed to the rosebush as the petals began to form into a beautiful flower. "Look-look-look!-It's-working!"
Lexi ran towards Rev and looked down at the rosebush. It was quite the beautiful sight to behold and they were growing very quickly. Once the last rose sprouted, she noticed the flowers jerking upwards and then falling limply onto the ground. "What happened?" she asked as she picked up the limp flower from the ground and looked at it.
Rev blinked upon seeing that. "Wait-that-wasn't-supposed-to-happen-was-it?" he asked. He turned the bottle over to see if there were any instructions written on it, but there was nothing.
"Maybe this was for trees only, not flowers," Lexi said to him. "I guess they're going to have to build another rosebush here. We'd better tell the coordinator about this."
Rev felt ashamed that he had been careless with the use of this mysterious liquid. He didn't want to be blamed for a mistake, but Lexi was right. It was better to come clean with it and be a good example, as a superhero, in the eyes of others.
"Excuse me," Lexi said as she walked up to the coordinator that had set up this whole committee. "My friend and I were planting some trees and this woman gave us this liquid to use on the trees. We got a little carried away and used it on some rosebushes. They grew but quickly died off."
The coordinator listened attentively and was disappointed to have heard what this liquid did to the rosebushes. "Wait a minute," she said as she looked at the two superheroes, familiar with whom they were. "What liquid? Who gave it to you?"
"This," Rev said and held the bottle towards the coordinator, "and-the-woman-that-gave-it-to-us-didn't-say-her-name."
Taking the bottle from him, the coordinator shook her head and led out a sigh. "And you went ahead and used this into the soil. Do you know what you have done?"
Lexi felt her heart stop and Rev felt his stomach drop. Had they done something that was detrimental to the soil.
"That woman that gave this to you is not to be trusted," she said as she threw the bottle in the trashcan. "She has constantly come here and given the same bottle to the other volunteers and they have been smart enough to come to me before using it."
"But we didn't know," Lexi said, "we thought that she was one of the members of your committee."
The coordinator rolled her eyes. "Of course, because I want someone who's mission is to destroy the agriculture of Acmetropolis to be on this committee. We're trying to save this town for crying out loud."
"What?" Rev almost yelled when she said that. "Why-does-she-want-to-do-that?"
The coordinator gave them a shrug of her shoulders. "She didn't specify. All I know is that she's not happy with me after I refused her offer in using that concoction for the soil. It's not natural."
Lexi took a deep breath. Even though they were still new to this job, her and Rev should have known better than to trust a stranger especially one that looked young but had the voice of a seventy-year-old woman. "We'll make this right," the female bunny assured the coordinator, "you can count on us."
"Can I really?" the coordinator asked her.
No don't say that Lexi thought, taken aback by her words. She didn't want the citizens to lose their trust in them. "Of course," Lexi said to her with a nod of her head, "this is our park too and we're willing to make things right."
"Then you'd better hurry," the coordinator said, "before she destroys everything."
