It had been a long while since Danny had that run-in with Wilder. Jack's arm was broken in two different spots so he had a cast on. Danny had promised his son that nothing will ever happen to him again but Jack didn't believe it.
"Dad, if you haven't noticed, this world isn't safe. How can I be safe if I can't walk outside without having the fear of being kidnapped again??"
"Calm down kiddo. Your mom can pick you up after school instead of you walking home. Okay? Will that solve the problem?"
"A little. But that doesn't even guarantee my safety!"
Danny sighed. "Stop speaking negatively. You can get back to having a normal life. It just takes time."
"I know. Do you know how frustrating it is to not have a normal life?" Jack pushed for a moment and then continued. "Of course you do. Your a freaking detective. They never have normal lives."
Danny couldn't help but smile for a second before he got serious again. "Look, you've lived a normal life before it happened."
"No I didn't. My dad is a cop! That's not living a normal life. People hate cops dad. My school mates hate cops."
"I know. Now, let's change the subject before your brother comes in here or overhears what we're talking about."
The two stopped talking for a while. Danny checked the time. It was almost time for him to go to work. He was working the Night Shift again. He always enjoyed working nights. Baez however, hated it because she wanted sleep.
Danny met Baez down at the precinct. She was spouting her first cup of coffee. She looked up at Danny before speaking.
"Why do we have to do nights?"
Danny responded. "Because it's fun. Less action. Quiet nights."
"Since when have we ever had a quiet night while working?"
He shrugged. "I don't know. I thought I'd just through that out there. Some nights are quiet."
"Make that a few nights are quiet. Not some." She said as she put a lid on her cup and took a sip out of it. "This coffee is strong. Just the way I need it to survive tonight."
Danny laughed. "Are you ready?"
"Aren't you going to get yourself a cup?"
"Nah. I'll get one later. I sense that tonight will be an interesting night. I don't need caffeine getting in the way." He laughed.
"What makes you think tonight's going to be interesting?"
They started walking outside and Baez took another sip of her coffee.
"I don't know. I'm just saying. Every time we have the graveyard shift it's interesting. That's how I know."
Danny took out the keys to the camero and unlocked the doors. They both got into the car quietly and when Danny started the car, he turned on the radio in the car.
"Do you have to play music tonight? When you play music, you tend to sing and I don't want to hear that right now."
"What, you don't like my singing?" He said, smiling.
"Not what I'm saying. You're a good singer and all but not tonight." She said turning off the radio.
"Ugh. Alright. We will do it your way this time. But next time we do nights, it's my way."
"I don't care. I just want a quiet night with no music."
"Yes ma'am." Danny said.
Baez laid her head back and closed her eyes. The two of them had no idea what that night would bring them...
