I woke up, panting. I was in my bed, Buttercup, my cat, at my feet. I looked to my left, to see that my older sister, Katniss, was already out and about. I assumed she was out in the woods, hunting with Gale. She would be back soon. I was immediately was brought back to my nightmare. It was the same one every night this time of year. It was always about The Hunger Games. Today was the day that one boy and one girl would be chosen. Katniss was sixteen. Her name was put in four times, but since she had requested tesserae for five years, which is a years' supply of grain and oil for one person, she had her name put in twenty times, as she also requested it for me and my mother. This was my first year, I am only twelve. The Capitol provides electricity to all twelve districts so they can watch children fight to the death. It's a show about real children starving to death and being knived. There's always only one victor. The victor's district gets flooded with gifts and riches, until the next year when a new victor comes into place.

...

My mother prepared me for the Reaping, putting a white button up on me, with a grey skirt, then French braiding two pigtails in my dirty blonde hair. I heard the front door shut, and I waited upstairs with my mother for Katniss. She walked in, and immediately a smile grew on my face as she said, "Oh, look at you! You look beautiful! But you better tuck in that tail, little duck." kneeling down in front of me, she tucked in my shirt as it was creating a duck tail on my back. "I laid something out for you, too." My mother said to Katniss. "Okay." Katniss responded, taking a look at me one last time, and then went to the bathroom to get ready.

She came out, with a light blue button up dress on, with a matching light blue ribbon tied around her waist. Our mother began putting her hair a braided bun. "Now you look beautiful, too." My mother said to her. "Wish I looked like you." I blurted out. Katniss walked over to me, and sat on the bed next to me. "Oh, no, I wish I looked like you, little duck!" She said, and smiled. "Here, look, I brought something for you." She said, reaching in her dress pocket, and pulled out a little gold bird pin. "A mockingjay. As long as you have this with you, nothing bad will happen." She said, smiling, and pinned it on my shirt.

And this is where it all begins.
