Chapter 7-Packing up the prison
Shane's P.O.V
Shane opened his eyes and looked around the cell he was in. He looked at Octavia, who had her head on his chest. "Octavia, it's time to wake up."
"Five more minutes," Octavia says softly.
"I wish, but we gotta get up. You gotta check on Eugene and Rosita, and I have to help Daryl and Glenn load up the guns."
"Fine," Octavia says with a groan as she climbs out of the bed. "When we find somewhere safe, we are spending a day in bed."
"Fine with me," Shane says as he stands up and puts his boots on.
Glenn's P.O.V
Glenn and Daryl were putting the guns in duffel bags when Shane walked over to them. "Nice of you to join us," Glenn says with a smirk. "Octavia, keep you in bed?"
"I wish," Shane says as he grabs a bag. He looks over at Daryl's bike as it sits by the police cruiser. "Still runs?" Daryl nods.
"Yes," Daryl says as he reaches into his pocket and throws Shane's car keys. "Your car is in that building over there," Daryl tells him.
"We'll be ditching the police cruiser and van. We'll take the bus, Daryl's bike, your car, and a truck we have back there," Glenn tells Shane, who nods.
"So, when did you and Maggie get married?" Shane asks him.
"About three months ago. I guess we both found love at the end of the world," Glenn says with a smirk.
"Guess so," Shane says as he looks at Daryl. "Are you gonna find love, Dixon?"
"No," Daryl says.
"Daryl likes his reputation as a lone wolf," Glenn says, making Shane chuckle.
"Come on. We have got work to do. Talk about your love lives later," Daryl says as he grabs a bag and walks away. Shane and Glenn follow him with smiles on their faces.
Octavia's P.O.V
Octavia sat beside Eugene and looked at Rosita as she walked in. "How is he?"
"Abraham could have done a lot more damage," Octavia says. "As long as he wakes up, he'll live. How's your hand?"
"Doesn't hurt too bad," Rosita says as she sits down beside her. "I wanna hate him for lying," Rosita says. "But I can't because if I was in his shoes, I would have done the same thing," Rosita says. "He just wanted to live."
"People died because of him," Octavia says.
"Their blood is on his hands, and he'll have to live with that," Rosita says, and Octavia nods.
Beth's P.O.V
Beth, Maggie, Noah, and Theo were taking whatever supplies they could from the infirmary. "You guys had an impressive setup," Noah says.
"It took a while to become this. A lot of runs and a lot of teamwork," Beth tells him. "Everybody here worked together. We were all family."
"For a few months, it was almost like the world didn't end," Maggie says. "We were happy, and then the Governor showed up and destroyed everything, killed Daddy, and put us back on the road," Maggie says.
"We'll find somewhere else," Noah says. "If Shirewilt is safe, you'll be welcomed there."
"Thanks, Noah," Beth says.
Abraham's P.O.V
Abraham stopped the truck in front of a trailer and climbed out. He walked up to Rick, Clarke, Oliver, and Carol. "How's the hand?" Carol asks.
"Fine," Abraham says as he hooks the trailer up. "Any news on Eugene?"
"Still sleeping," Clarke tells him. Abraham nods as he hooks the trailer up. "Let's get the boxes of food on here. You got straps, Rick?" Clarke asks.
"Yeah," Rick says as he opens the truck door and pulls them out. "Abraham, go find Tara, Michonne, Carl, and Blake. See how they're doing with gas."
Abraham nods as he walks up the field and walks over to Michonne. "How much gas do we have?"
"Enough to get us to Shirewilt and back," Michonne tells him. "We'll be fine. Daryl, Shane, and Glenn are almost done loading the guns into Shane's car and the bus. Once we get the food and medical supplies loaded up, we will be ready to leave. We'll be out by morning."
Abraham nods as he walks back down towards Rick.
Shane's P.O.V
Shane opened his eyes and sighed as he heard knocking on the door. He walked to the door and opened it, and Noah pushed his way in. "Good morning, Noah," Shane says to the young man.
"Two officers are dead," Noah tells him.
"What?" Shane asks him.
"Lamson found their car and their bodies. This works for us. You're on watch tonight. I know Blake is in here for a few hours before she goes to bed, so get her down there, and I'll meet you," Noah tells Shane, who nods.
"Alright, we get out tonight."
Carl's P.O.V
Carl walked down to the graves and stopped in front of Lori's. "I miss you," Carl says as he sits down in front of the grave. "I've lost myself, Mom. I've dishonored you. I should have never killed that boy. I'm supposed to do what is right, not what's easy, and killing that boy it was easy. I'm going to try, Mom. I'm going to be the man you want me to be. I'm going to honor you. I'm gonna beat this world."
Carl walks back up to the prison and looks at Shane, who is watching him. "You okay?" Shane asks Carl, who nods as he walks away.
Rosita's P.O.V
Rosita sat with Octavia. "Can I get some water?" They both turn their head and look at Eugene, who is looking at them.
"Yeah," Octavia says as she hands him a bottle of water. "How are you feeling?"
"My face and head hurt," Eugene says.
"Yeah, that's gonna last for a while," Octavia tells him.
"Are you okay?" Eugene asks Rosita, who nods. "I'm sorry."
"I know you are," Rosita says. "I'm fine, Eugene. Everybody is fine. You have a lot to make up for, but to make up for it, you have to learn to survive, so when we are safe, I'm going to teach you how to fight, how to shoot."
"Alright," Eugene says as he lays his head back down.
Rick's P.O.V
Rick walked up to Beth as she zipped up a bag. "Hey," Rick says. "Can we talk for a second?"
"Yeah," Beth says as she looks at him. "What's up?"
"You and Daryl became pretty close out there. Something is bothering him. He's been quiet; he didn't sleep last night."
"How do you know that?" Beth asks.
"I came out of my cell. He was just sitting with his back against the railing. You know what's wrong?"
"He blames himself for what happened. For the Governor coming back, for him destroying the prison, for Daddy. Said that if he didn't stop looking, he could have found him and killed him."
Rick nods. "Thanks," Beth nods as Rick walks away.
Daryl's P.O.V
Daryl puts the last duffle bag in Shane's car and looks at Rick as he walks up to him. "How are we doing?" Rick asks him.
"Good man," Daryl says. "Got enough ammo and guns to arm everybody here ten times over," Daryl says, and Rick nods. "What's up?"
"We haven't much time to talk," Rick says as he sits in the back of the car. "It's been a lot."
"Yeah, we ain't done yet. We still gotta get Noah home," Daryl says as he sits down beside him. "If it's safe, we'll stay. If not, we'll find somewhere, give little ass kicker a life."
"We all deserve a life," Rick says. "Including you. I talked with Beth. What happened here? It wasn't your fault. You have this really annoying habit. You blame yourself for shit you can't control. Hershel dying, that wasn't your fault. He would be grateful that you kept his daughter safe, kept her alive."
"I didn't," Daryl says. "She kept herself alive, kept me alive too."
"Point stands. Stop blaming yourself for this shit, Daryl. We can't change the past. We can only make the future better."
"Alright, come on, we should get inside. Everything is packed up," Rick nods as he follows Daryl inside.
Shane's P.O.V
Shane was sitting with Blake when he heard the door open. He turns his head as Octavia walks into the room with Clarke and Oliver. "Mom," Blake says as she runs over to her mother, who hugs her and kisses her head.
"I've missed you so much, baby," Octavia says as Shane stands and Clarke raises her gun at him.
"No," Blake says. "Leave him alone."
"We gotta go, guys," Oliver says.
"Let's go, Blake," Octavia says as she grabs her daughter's hand.
"Not without, Shane," Blake says.
"We don't know him, and we have to leave," Clarke tells her niece.
"No him, no me," Blake says as she crosses her arms.
"Fine, grab your things," Octavia tells Shane, who nods as he grabs his knife, gun, and radio.
"What about Noah?" Blake asks.
"Get downstairs. I'll meet you there," Shane tells Blake softly. Shane walks out of the room and walks down the halls. He stops by Noah's room when he hears talking.
"I've seen you with him a lot, Noah," Dawn says as Shane looks around the door, and Noah sees him. "What is he planning?"
"I don't know, if I was him, I wouldn't want to stay here. Maybe it will be easier if he just goes. For his safety and ours," Noah says, and Shane stares at him. Shane nods to Noah as he turns and leaves.
An hour later
Shane stood with Octavia, Clarke, Oliver, Thea, and Blake outside the city by their car. "You ready to go?" Octavia asks.
"Yeah, I just got a message to give, Dawn," Shane says as he pulls the radio out. "Dawn, this is Shane."
"You got out with Blake. I'm impressed. What do you want?"
"I'm gonna take you down, Dawn. Not today, not tomorrow, but someday I will come back here, and you will die," Shane says. "I promise," He says before he drops the radio to the ground and crushes it. "Let's go."
The present
Shane walks down to Lori's grave and lays his hand on her cross. "I wish I got the chance to tell you how sorry I am for everything that happened for the CDC. I was an asshole to you, to Rick, to Dale. To everybody. You made a beautiful daughter, Lori, and you gave your life so she could live. I can't tell you I'm sorry, but I'm going to do what I can to honor you. I'm gonna make sure that both of your children alive. Goodbye, Lori," Shane says before he walks back up to the prison.
Daryl's P.O.V
Daryl sat on the perch, sharpening his knife. The prison was silent as Beth walked up to him. "You know you have to drive a bike tomorrow, and I'm gonna be on the back of that bike. So I would feel better if you slept," Beth says as she sits down beside him.
"I'll sleep," Daryl tells her. "Maybe we could find another casket that was comfortable."
"I'll keep my eye out," Beth says. "I'm not leaving this spot until you're asleep."
"Alright," Daryl says as he lays down on the mattress he had brought out there. He looks at Beth. "You can go to bed now."
"Nope, not until I hear you snore," Beth says with a smirk, making him chuckle.
"Fine," Daryl says as he gets up and walks into Beth's cell. He grabs her mattress, drags it onto the perch, and sets it down beside his. "Now, lay now."
"You're my chaperone again," Beth says.
"Shut up and go to sleep," Daryl says, and Beth smiles as she lies down beside him.
"Goodnight, Daryl."
"Night, Beth," Daryl says as he closes his eyes.
