The shades in Xavier's office were down, leaving him and Wolverine in darkness.
Wolverine had come to him, claiming that he was troubled, and Xavier decided to hear him out.
"What is it you fear?" Xavier asked his student.
"Myself." Logan confessed. "It's like I don't know who I am anymore."
"Why now?" Xavier asked as he wondered what could've possibly set him off.
"I don't know." Wolverine sighed. "If I knew, I'd handle it."
"Is it because of Proteus?" Xavier remembered how his first encounter with Proteus made Logan experience fear for the first time."
Wolverine gripped the hands of his chair as he recalled that time.
"Don't make me bust you up."
And the fear that he made Logan go through.
"Hey! Stop it! Make it stop! No! No more!"
"No, I worked through that." Wolverine said. It'd taken some time, but he put that behind him.
Xavier thought of another possible trigger. "Did the revelation of your Weapon X brainwashing distress you?"
Now Xavier could hear the voice of Kenji Oyama as Logan was going through Weapon X simulations.
"Despite initial setbacks, all subjects are responding to the trauma conditioning. We will be able to reintegrate them into society with no memory that we conditioned them. The key is to reach the subconscious mind. When their covert services are needed, they will attack their target and then remember nothing."
"I got a lot of memories, Doc." Wolverine told Xavier. "So what if a few of them ain't real?"
He could see himself with a woman, Silver Fox, before they were ambushed by Sabretooth.
"What's wrong, punk?" Sabretooth taunted. "Can't take care of your woman?"
"Your woman. Your woman." It echoed through his mind.
Xavier had one last idea. "Is it about Jean?"
Wolverine remembered that during their wedding, he hauled himself up in the Danger Room and spent hours slicing several robots that resembled Cyclops.
"You can't have her!"
"Jean." Wolverine mumbled her name. He loved her and still did, but it was time to let her be happy with Cyclops.
"No, she's happy." Wolverine answered. "I love her enough to want her to stay that way."
"When you first came here, you were wild and confused, out of control." Xavier said. "You learned to harness your rage as you found a home here. Yet I sense you are no happier. What are you afraid that you will do?"
"When I used to go berserk, I was an animal." Logan informed him. "I had no direction, no purpose. You and the others gave me a reason to fight or back off. It's not there anymore."
"Logan!" Xavier was worried about Logan's emotional state. "Consider what you're saying."
"I wanted to waste a kid today!" Wolverine cried in guilt. "For cutting me off in traffic!"
He was driving his Jeep with Jubilee when a kid cut him off. In his anger, he ripped the door off and pulled the kid out, preparing to gut him, when Jubilee tried to stop him, only to be pushed aside.
"I even came close to hurting Jubilee!" Wolverine looked back at the memory with shame. How could he do that to one of his friends?
"And it didn't bother me." Logan confessed. "I didn't care, professor. Even animals care about each other. I don't know what's missing inside. I got no idea how I lost it. But there's one place I might be able to get it back." He gave Xavier a calm stare. "I'm going to Japan. I'm leaving the X-Men."
A taxi honked its horn outside the institute as Logan was in his room packing. Looking into a mirror, he saw Nightcrawler staring back at him as he gave Logan some helpful advice.
"Have hope, Logan."
"Wish I could, pal." Logan said before the reflection of Nightcrawler turned into one of Sabretooth, who started laughing. "But my eyes see me too well." He slashed the mirror apart.
Jubilee walked in. "Your taxi's here." She said sadly. "Why do you have to leave?"
"Don't you get it?" Wolverine said. "I didn't care what happened to that kid! I didn't care what happened to you!"
"The professor helped you before." Jubilee tried to convince him to stay as tears dripped from her eyes. "He'll do it again! We'll all help!"
"Thanks, kid. But right now, I'm not fit to be one of the X-Men." Wolverine grabbed his backpack. "There's a place I was happy once. A simple world where I knew how to live. Maybe I can find what I'm looking for there."
Wolverine then left the room as he took the taxi to the airport.
As he was boarding the plane, a flight attendant approached him.
"Sir, do you mind switching seats so that a mother and her child can sit together?" He asked him.
Wolverine shook his head. "No, I don't mind."
Wolverine was directed to his new seat and was surprised at who he was sitting next to.
"Danny?" Wolverine was shocked to see him. "What are you doing here? Did the professor or Jubilee send you to convince me to come back?"
"I didn't even know you were here." Danny pointed out. "Why are you here?"
Wolverine sighed as he took his seat. "Something horrible happened. I lost control. I was driving with Jubilee, and a kid cut me off in traffic. I don't know why, but I lost control, and I almost killed him and almost hurt Jubilee in the process."
"Is she okay?" Danny asked as his brotherly instincts took over.
"Don't worry, bub, she's fine." Logan told him. "And she will be now that I'm gone. I left the X-Men, and I'm heading back to Japan."
"I'm sorry to hear that." Danny said. He'd hate to see Logan leave. Sure, Wolverine could be an ass at times, but he liked the man and always knew he had his back in a fight. "I hope you find what you're looking for."
"Me too. Maybe I could find a purpose there." Logan muttered.
"Purpose?" Danny raised an eyebrow at the word. "Is that what caused this? You feel like you don't have a purpose."
"You seem like your familiar with this crap." Logan said.
"Well, I've heard of ghosts who lose their obsession or purpose." Danny told him.
"I'm no ghost." Wolverine had heard of Danny's talks about obsessions. "I don't have an obsession."
"True." Danny agreed. "You don't have anything tying you to this realm since you aren't dead. But like ghosts, humans, or mutants in your case, all long for a purpose in life in order to find some form of order and control in this chaotic world."
"Lucky me." Wolverine said sarcastically, before wondering why Danny was here. "What are you doing heading to Japan? Rogue too suffocating for you?"
Danny chuckled. "Hey, she's never suffocated me. Although, I think she might be up for that in the bedroom if I suggest it."
Wolverine shook his head. "Didn't need to know that. So why are you here?"
"The monitors in the War Room detected an ecto-signature in Japan. I was going through some newspaper articles and found out the village it's originating from is experiencing a bit of poverty, with locals claiming superstitions to be the cause." Danny said as he pulled out a map that had been marked with the location of the village.
Logan took a look at it as his eyes widened. "That's the same place I'm heading to."
"Looks like you're not rid of us X-Men yet." Danny teased.
Wolverine rolled his eyes.
Danny and Wolverine arrived at the village temple, which was still being constructed.
An old man noticed the two's presence and went to greet them. "Yokoso, Logan-san. Though many years have passed, I have been expecting your return."
Logan bowed to the man. "Domo, Master Oku." He then gestured to Danny. "This is a friend of mine. Danny."
Danny copied Logan's bow. "An honor to meet you, Master Oku."
"Likewise, Danny-san." Master Oku said.
Wolverine took a look as several men were working on finishing the temple. "I see you're not done with your new temple."
"We do what we can." Master Oku replied.
"Using those tools, you're gonna be doing it for a long time." Wolverine commented as he looked at the primitive tools they were using.
"We have nowhere to go." Master Oku said calmly. "There is no hurry."
"Feels like I've been in a hurry ever since I left Japan." Wolverine muttered to himself. "Mind if I pick up where I left off?"
"It would be an honor." Master Oku said gratefully.
Wolverine saw a pair of men struggling with raising a pillar, and he went over to assist them. He then turned to Danny. "You know how to build a temple?"
Danny grinned. "They didn't teach that in shop class back in high school, but I'm game."
"Perhaps building the temple will aid you in rebuilding your soul." Master Oku suggested.
Throughout the day, Wolverine and Danny would help in constructing the temple, with Wolverine mediating during breaks. The day brought a sense of calm to Wolverine that he hadn't felt in a while.
It was soon evening, and it was time to stop working.
"The workday is over." Master Oku said.
"I ain't tired." Wolverine replied.
"The villagers have prepared a feast tonight." Master Oku informed him. "It would dishonor them to keep waiting."
"It would also dishonor my stomach." Danny joked. "Come on, Wolverine, we can't pass up a free meal."
The three headed down from the temple into the village, where people were staring at the newcomers.
"They don't seem too friendly." Wolverine observed. "What, did we step on some ducks?"
"They are curious, Logan-san." Master Oku answered. "You are different." They then came across a middle-aged man. "This is Logan-san and Danny-san." Master Oku introduced. "They work with us building the temple. Logan, Danny, this is Yoshida-san, the village elder."
Danny and Wolverine bowed to Yoshida, who returned the action.
"We have seen you working at the temple." Yoshida said. "If Master Oku has welcomed you, we can do no less." He turned to a beautiful young lady. "Kisara! Show Logan-san and Danny-san to the table."
"Konichiwa, Logan-san, and Danny-san." Kisara bowed to them. "My name is Kisara."
They were about to be shown to the table when they heard the loud noise of a motorcycle as it stopped.
"Who's Evel Knievel?" Logan asked Kisara.
"He is my brother, Soichi." Kisara responded. "He has a wild spirit."
"My condolences." Logan said.
"You should have been with the fishing fleet this morning." Yoshida scolded Soichi.
"I have been training the few who have the courage to fight our enemies!" Soichi snapped.
"You know this is forbidden!" Yoshida reminded him. "We will do what we have always done. We will pay."
"No!" Soichi cried. "This time we..."
"Show some respect for your elders, kid." Wolverine interrupted.
"I only respect those who earn it!" Soichi retorted.
Wolverine was about to attack when he held back his rage. "You're right, kid. I was wrong to interfere."
Danny went up to Soichi. "Sorry about my friend. I'm Danny. Nice motorcycle; I have one as well."
Soichi became less hostile, probably because he was in the presence of another person who liked motorcycles.
"Soichi." The young man said.
"You talked about fighting your enemies." Danny said. "Who are your enemies?"
"Spirits." Soichi spat in anger. "Several of them come to the village and demand tribute and offerings. They threaten to destroy the village if we don't."
"Tell me about these spirits." Danny encouraged.
"They look like skeletons, and they wield swords." Soichi described them. "Their leader rarely appears, but those who've seen him describe him as some kind of man on a horse."
"Man on a horse?" Danny repeated.
Xavier found a note in his office and read it.
Dear Professor Xavier,
I don't know why Wolverine left. But I know he's unhappy and he's alone. I peeked at his personal file, and it took a while, but I think I know where he went in Japan. I have to try to help him, or I'd never forgive myself. I know you'll understand.
Jubilee.
Jubilee was flying one of the mini-jets to where she thought Logan was.
Logan was doing some more work on the temple when Master Oku went up to him.
"We need more timbers for the temple roof, Logan-san." Oku told him.
"I will get them, Master Oku." Logan headed out to the forest.
"Do you not need a saw?" Master Oku called out.
Logan smirked. "And spoil the fun?"
He found a tree and used his claws to cut it down. "Timber!"
"Interesting appendages." A voice commented.
Logan turned around to see the ghostly figure of a medieval knight come out of the forest riding an Alicorn. This was the Fright Knight and his loyal steed Nightmare.
"I guess I found Danny's ghost." Logan muttered.
The Fright Knight observed Logan's claws with curiosity. "I wonder about the possibilities if they were used in combat."
"The name's Logan, and I'm cutting trees." Logan said. "Who are you?"
"I am the Fright Knight, the Spirit of Halloween!" The ghost proclaimed. "The people of this province know to fear me."
"Perhaps I will learn, too." Wolverine said sarcastically.
Fright Knight's green eyes met Wolverine's.
"I look into your eyes, and I see that we are not so different." Fright Knight said. "Warriors born to fight and cause bloodshed."
"I'm nothing like you!" Wolverine snarled. "Now why are you here?"
"I give you a warning, mortal." Fright Knight said as he pointed at him. "Stay out of matters that do not concern you."
Wolverine crossed his arms. "Not that it's any of your business, but that's just what I had in mind."
Fright Knight nodded in approval. "A wise decision, whelp. May you live to benefit from it. I would not mind a duel with you sometime in the future."
He then went back into the forest.
"Somehow, I don't think he's local." Wolverine quipped.
An army of skeletons marched to the entrance of the village as the people gazed at them in terror.
In front of them, the Fright Knight materialized.
The ghostly knight addressed the villagers. "We are here to remind you that the tribute you owe us is due in three days."
"It has been a bad year for our village." Yoshida informed him timidly. "We can scarcely feed ourselves."
"I care not for excuses." Fright Knight replied coldly as he showed them his green sword. "Have the tribute ready in three days, or you will know what it is like to be pierced by my blade, the Soul Shredder."
"No!" Soichi refused. "The thieving will stop! We will not give you tribute or offerings."
"Soichi!" Kisara was worried for her brother now that he had angered the spirit.
"Peasant!" Fright Knight raised his sword. "You will pay dearly for your blasphemy!"
"No, please!" Yoshida got in front of Soichi. "Have mercy."
The Fright Knight paused a bit as he thought this over before lowering his blade. "Control your villagers, or they will know true fear." He warned them. "I will expect the tribute in two days now, or else. I have left you a reminder of what happens if you don't."
"The Fright Knight?" Danny exclaimed at what Wolverine told him. "He's the one who's been terrorizing these villagers?"
Wolverine nodded. "How do we stop him?"
Danny thought back to the first time he fought him. "Well, without a pumpkin, the only thing I can do is weaken him enough and suck him up in the thermos."
Before they could discuss anything else, Wolverine noticed smoke in the sky.
"Smoke coming from the temple!" Wolverine yelled. They ran to the sight to find the temple burning, with Kisara watching the destruction.
"Master Oku is trapped inside!" Kisara cried.
Danny and Wolverine entered the flaming building as they searched for the man.
"Master Oku!" Logan called.
"There!" Danny pointed to Master Oku, who was sitting down calmly in spite of the whole place burning down.
"Master Oku." Wolverine went up to him and picked him up. "I hope you're not upset if we don't stick to chat."
They got him out safely as Kisara came up to them.
"Is Master Oku all right?" She asked.
Danny looked at the burning temple. "How did this happen?"
"Each year, those spirits demand tribute from all the villagers." Kisara explained. "If we do not comply..."
"We get the picture." Wolverine interrupted. "The old protection racket, medieval style."
"This year we have no tribute to give them." Kisara said worriedly. "They will destroy our village."
"It never ends." Wolverine said bitterly as his peace was ruined by the acts of another.
Wolverine was standing on the beach. Danny had secretly used his ice powers to put out the fire, much to the surprise and happiness of the villagers.
Now Logan was pondering what would happen next. It seemed like life could never give him a break, as something always ended up ruining his attempts to start a new life.
Kisara ran up to him with Danny by her side. "Logan-san, you must help. Soichi is trying to organize the people to fight the spirits. Danny-san has said that he can get someone to help us."
"Who?" Wolverine asked.
Danny winked. "Let's just say not all spirits are like Fright Knight. Some of them can't stand the things he has done and want to take action."
Wolverine nodded as he realized Danny was referring to his alter-ego.
"You can help too, Logan-san." Kiara said.
"Dameda, Kisara." Logan replied. "I'm sorry. I came to find myself, not to fight."
"But the villagers are not trained as fighters." Kisara protested. "We have no weapons. We cannot defend ourselves from bandits, much less spirits."
"What would Master Oku say, Kisara?" Wolverine asked her.
"He would say that no world possessions are worth the risk of one's life." Kisara said without any hesitation.
"So tell that to the villagers." Logan suggested.
"But Master Oku would also say that inner peace is found not by avoiding conflict but in serving your true nature." Kisara added.
"My true nature." Logan looked down at his claws. "Huh, I wish I knew what that was."
"Wolverine, have you thought that your purpose in coming here was to help them?" Danny whispered to him, but Logan just continued to walk away.
Jubilee was asking some locals if they had seen Wolverine. "Wolverine. You sure you haven't seen him?" She had a picture of Logan to use as a reference. "He used to hang out here with an Oku guy."
The man shook his head.
"Great." Jubilee said in annoyance before she felt someone behind her.
"So his true name is Wolverine." Fright Knight looked at the photo. "A fitting name for a beastly mortal."
Jubilee gasped as she recognized this ghost from Danny's stories. "Fright Knight!"
Fright Knight tilted his head. "So you have heard of my legend?" He held out his blade. "Then you know what happens if I cut you with this?"
"I get teleported to a dimension where I'm surrounded by my worst fears." Jubilee answered fearfully.
"You are knowledgeable, young one." He praised. "Now tell me more about this, Wolverine."
"This time, we fight back!" Soichi encouraged the villagers to rise up.
"This is foolish, Soichi." Yoshida argued. "We are farmers and fishermen, no match for armed fighters."
"Better to die defending ourselves than to live in fear!" Soichi retorted. "Since I was a child, I have watched our people work hard, only to have these monsters torment us. Our children shall not suffer as we have!"
A copy of Danny walked up to them. "He's right, and I have someone who agrees." He gestured to the original, who was in ghost form. He decided to make a copy to take the place of his human identity, so no one wondered where he was while Danny Phantom was helping them.
"A spirit." Soichi said in awe.
"Yes, but I'm not like the ones who terrorized this village." Danny said. That man is right; we must fight back, and I'm here to join the battle."
"We can take our home back now that we have a spirit on our side." Soichi said, pleased with this new development.
The duplicate noticed Wolverine walking by. "What about you, Wolverine? You gonna help?"
"Yeah, you were right." Wolverine said. "This is my purpose. Either you stand and fight, or you'll be kissing their backsides forever."
"No more tribute!" A villager yelled.
"We will fight!" Another cried.
"Is this how you repay us?" Yoshida scolded Logan and the copy. "By helping bring destruction to our village?"
"No, we're repaying you by making sure they can never hurt any of you ever again." The copy said to Yoshida.
Wolverine was back at the temple, looking at the night sky.
Master Oku and Danny both noticed that he looked troubled.
"You are trying to decide how to act tomorrow." Master Oku stated.
"They're gonna be slaughtered, Master Oku." Wolverine said before Danny coughed
"Or not." Wolverine corrected himself, knowing that with Danny here, the battle was in their favor.
"Possibly." Master Oku replied. "But I feel like that's not what has you so worked up."
"I came here to get away from fighting! I want to be like you! I just want to live in peace!"
"Do you?" Master Oku asked. "Peace comes with purpose. My faith gives me mine."
"Ripping up people is no purpose!" Wolverine snapped.
"But protecting people and caring for people is." Danny pointed out. "You're more than just some animal full of rage, Wolverine. Ever since I have known you, you have put your neck on the line for others. You're a hero. I just wish you could see that."
"I want to, Danny, but I..." Wolverine couldn't form the right words, so he just stormed off.
As he slept, memories appeared in his dreams.
"Begin the Adamantium feed."
"Adamantium reservoirs drained, sir. Absorption process complete."
"I am afraid that you will go and I will never see you again."
"I promise. Whatever happens, I'll come back to you."
"It doesn't have to end this way, Yuriko!"
"Yuriko is gone. There is only Deathstrike!"
"We used to be old pals. Even worked together. But we had some little misunderstandings."
"Yeah, right. He wasted some friends of mine for no reason, and I misunderstood?"
Logan and Sabretooth were evading shots from armed guards when Logan gestured for his friends to follow them.
"Come on, Fox." Logan urged. "Let's go! Run for it!"
Unfortunately, Omega Red appeared in their path.
Logan was about to rescue them when Sabretooth pushed him aside.
"Forget it, kid; they're expendable." Sabretooth blasted the door lock, closing the door and trapping Logan's friends with Omega Red.
"No!" Logan cried out to his friends.
"Have hope, Logan."
Logan was walking on the beach when he noticed his reflection in a puddle changed to that of Sabretooth.
"No, I am not an animal!" Logan raged internally.
"Look deeper, Logan-san." Kisara said as she touched the puddle, and his reflection returned. "You are only yourself, no one else."
"You're more than just some animal full of rage, Wolverine." Danny told him. "Ever since I have known you, you have put your neck on the line for others. You're a hero. I just wish you could see that."
Wolverine woke up, and he decided he needed to talk to someone. He entered Danny's room, where the supernatural X-Man was sleeping.
"Danny?" Wolverine whispered.
Danny's eyes opened. "Yeah."
"Have you ever lost your purpose or obsession before?" Wolverine asked.
"Once." Danny confessed. "After Dan had killed my loved ones, I struggled to find a purpose. I couldn't go back to protecting Amity Park; what kind of hero could I be to them if I couldn't even protect the people I cared about? My purpose changed from protecting to just surviving and making sure I didn't end up like Dan."
He had a saddened look as he thought about his old family. "Then I was taken in by Steve and Martha, and when I was introduced to Jubilee, my purpose shifted to being part of the family."
He then smiled. "Then, when Jubilee and I met you guys, my purpose became helping you bring peace between humans and mutants. Through you guys, I reconnected with my obsession. To protect. Not only that, but I found a new family. I found friends who understood what it's like to be different. I met Rogue, and I found love. So despite feeling that I lost purpose, I found it again in the end."
Wolverine had another question. "And what about Dan? Do you ever fear that one day you'll become him?"
"Every day." Danny answered without a beat.
"How do you live with that?" Wolverine couldn't believe that Danny could be so happy after everything that had happened to him.
"I live through it because I know what happens if I turn into him, and I refuse to let that occur." Danny said simply. "So that's how I deal with it. I refuse to let myself be turned into something I don't want to be."
"Thanks, bub." Wolverine said, appreciating what Danny said.
The skeletons were charging at the villagers.
"Here they come!" Soichi said.
"Hey, you guys got lost on your way to the Renaissance Fair?" Danny asked as he stared to fire his ecto-blasts at the army. "Let me help you with directions."
Danny managed to destroy nearly the whole army, with the villagers taking care of the rest with several traps that they had set up. Some traps included dropping nets filled with fish on them; another was knocking them down with wooden poles hanging from ropes.
A pair of skeletons came across Master Oku.
"Out of the way, old man!" One ordered, but Oku would not move, so the two made a move to attack him.
"Don't touch him!" Wolverine grabbed them and threw them into a tree.
Logan inspected the kind old man. "Are you hurt?"
"No, Logan-san." Master Oku answered.
"What are you doing here?" Logan demanded.
"We all fight in our own way." Master Oku told him. "It seems you have rediscovered yours."
Soon, all the skeletons were dealt with, and the villagers started to cheer at their victory.
"We did it!" Soichi cheered. "We stopped the spirits!"
"All but one." Fright Knight said as he held Jubilee by her throat.
"Jubilee!" Danny and Wolverine cried out.
"Logan! Danny! Help!" Jubilee pleaded.
"Let her go!" Danny ordered as he prepared to attack.
"You make one move, Hybrid, and she will be forced to live a living nightmare." Fright Knight threatened as he pointed the Soul Shredder at the young mutant.
"Put her down!" Danny shouted.
"I will." Fright Knight said. "In exchange, I want a duel with him." He pointed at Wolverine.
"Me?" Wolverine said in confusion.
"Yes, if you win, I'll leave this village alone and never come back. If you lose, then I will kill you." Fright Knight stated.
Wolverine growled at his enemy. "I accept your terms."
"Excellent." Fright Knight set Jubilee down, who ran to Danny. He then got off Nightmare and held his sword out. "Now come and face the strongest warrior in the Ghost Zone."
"Wolverine, whatever you do, don't let that sword cut you." Danny warned him.
Wolverine didn't pay that much attention. "I can heal from anything."
"It's not the blade that you should be worried about, but what it does." Danny pointed out. "If it cuts you, then you'll be teleported to a dimension surrounded by your worst fears."
"Great if it wasn't easy enough." Wolverine complained before he got ready to fight. "Alright, tin man, let's dance."
The two dueled as Danny, Jubilee, and the villagers watched. Wolverine clashed his claws against Fright Knight's sword as he tried to dodge all the swings. There were several close calls where Wolverine almost got hit by the blade, but he managed to avoid the Soul Shredder.
"You are a formidable opponent." Fright Knight complimented. "But I already knew that. I knew the moment I laid eyes on you. You see, we are so similar."
"I'm not like you!" Wolverine cried, insulted by the idea of being compared to this guy.
"No?" Fright Knight mocked. "Are you not a person filled with rage whose only purpose is to destroy and shred anything that comes across your path?"
Wolverine didn't have a comeback for that, as he realized that Fright Knight was technically right.
Fright Knight took his opponent's silence as confirmation that he was right. "I thought so. You see, Wolverine, we are nothing but weapons. That's all we are and what we'll ever be."
"I'm more than a weapon." Wolverine shot back. "I fight not to harm but to protect. Through that, I find peace."
"Peace!" Fright Knight spat the word out in disgust, as if the very idea repulsed him. "Peace is nothing but a dream for people like us. Let me tell you something, mortal. I never knew peace at all in my life. I was just a boy when my village was attacked by bandits. We lived in fear for what seemed like an eternity. It was then up to me to stop them. So I trained and trained. When I finally slayed them all, I had become the village's defender. I protected it from all kinds of threats. The king heard of my deeds and drafted me into his army. I destroyed anyone that dared to overthrow his kingdom."
Danny was shocked that he was getting to learn who Fright Knight was in life. The book that Sam had on him didn't cover this.
"My prowess became well known as well as my ability to strike fear into the hearts of my enemies." Fright Knight continued. "It grew so much that soon everyone started to fear me. Even the king banished me because he saw me as a threat. Other kingdoms started to recruit me to defend them, but the process would repeat itself. In time, I was nothing more than a mercenary for hire. Violence and fear were all that I had, even when I passed on and returned in this state. Not even death itself can grant me peace, so tell me what makes you think you can find what I couldn't in my lifetime."
Fright Knight swung his sword at Wolverine, who rolled out of the way.
"Because, unlike you, I don't fight just for the sake of fighting." Wolverine caught the sword between two of his claws. "I fight to protect."
He then disarmed Fright Knight as he took the sword and pointed it at the ghost's neck.
Fright Knight was in total disbelief at the fact that he had lost. "No! Impossible! How could you defeat me?"
"Because I have something that you don't. And that's something worth fighting for." Logan told him. "You did too, before you lost sight of who you are." He turned to Danny. "Casper, take him away."
Danny pulled out the thermos and sucked up Fright Night, followed by Nightmare.
"Nice one, Wolverine." Jubilee cheered.
Wolverine smiled. "Jubilee!"
"I heard there was a former X-Man in the neighborhood." Jubilee informed him. "Guess I felt I had something to do with him going."
"My leaving was never your fault, kid." Logan assured her. "It was something I had to do."
It was later in the day, as they were all overlooking the temple being rebuilt.
Danny Phantom said goodbye to the villagers as he snuck off and merged back with his copy, with no one having any idea that they were the same person.
Now Danny was with Wolverine and Jubilee as Master Oku was thanking them all.
The elderly man then looked at the temple. "You see, Logan-san. The temple will be completed without you."
"I know." Logan said. "Temple-building ain't my job."
"We all fight in our own way." Master Oku said wisely.
"Arigato, Logan-san, and Danny-san." Soichi gave them a bow.
Logan stopped him. "No need, kid."
"Arigato, Logan-san, for everything." Kisara thanked him.
"No, Kisara." Logan corrected as he kissed her. "Thank you."
The X-Men started to leave the village as Jubilee started to talk.
"So what did I miss?" She asked. "Who's the babe? Sounds like you two got pretty friendly. And Danny, what are you doing here? Do you know what a tough time I had trying to find him when you were with him the entire time? Nobody speaks English. You think they'd notice a guy with big claws. And wait, who's that Oku guy again?"
"Jubilee, save it for the plane ride home." Danny said in exasperation.
In the Ghost Zone, Fright Knight looked at his sword.
"Was he right? Do I have anything to fight for?" He contemplated this question as he saw several ghosts start to harass a weak-looking one.
"Perhaps I did lose my way. I fought to protect my village, and yet I allowed my own love of battle to consume me and blind me to what's truly important. I must not bring fear, but hope."
Before his eyes, his sword turned from green to a bright blue. Looking at his weapon and the ghost being attacked by his harassers, Fright Knight narrowed his eyes.
"Come, Nightmare." He said to his companion. "It is time to fulfill my purpose. To protect the innocent."
He rode out to save that ghost from his attackers.
