Chapter 22: Friendly Fire: Tiffany and Stuart
It was well into the summer when Audrey called Stuart. His sister-in-law was going on a work trip and asked if he could watch over the kids for a couple of days. Of course, he agreed. Despite his busy schedule, he wanted to spend as much time as he could with his brother's kids.
"I want to do something for them, Tiff. They seem bored from having to stay home all the time," Stuart told his partner after work.
"So, take them somewhere," she said. "You said your nephew likes video games, right?" When he nodded, she continued, "Then take them to the arcade or the laser-tag."
He smiled, "That's a great idea. I bet his sister would like that too. She's very competitive. You should come with us."
Surprised at the invite, Tiff hesitated, "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, you can't play if there's not enough number of players."
Tiff chuckled, "And here I was thinking you wanted to enjoy my company."
"That too," Stuart giving her a charming smile.
When they arrived at the laser tag place, the kids appeared nervous. Tiff assured them, "It's alright, it's just a friendly game. Just relax and have fun."
Stuart's niece smiled. "It's just that it's our first time to play."
"No need to worry. We got your back," Stuart said as he approached them. "Here are your weapons and protective gear. Just follow me and Tiff and you'll be fine."
After the game briefing, the three teams entered the arena on separate entrances. Tiff led their team, with the two kids following her, then Stuart to protect them from behind.
As the battle started, lights and sounds overwhelmed the kids. In the confusion, his nephew turned his weapon on Stuart and accidentally shot him. The shocked look on his nephew's face made Stuart immediately hug him, "It's okay, I'm fine. The points would be counted at the end of the game." After he calmed down, they continued their pursuit.
In the end, they lost but congratulated the winning team. "You know, for first-timers, you guys did well," said Tiff to the kids.
His nephew turned to Stuart, "I'm sorry again, Uncle Stu."
"And I already told you, it's fine. Like what Tiff said, you did well. Both of you." Stuart's smile reflected back on their faces. "Now, who wants ice cream?"
Watching the kids eating their ice cream, Stuart confessed to Tiff, "They barely even remembered their dad. I just want to give them some good memories."
Tiff held his hand. "You're a good uncle. I know your brother would be so proud of you."
