A.N. — The trend of August duos and pairs resumes today, with a married couple that has a dark past. The next two chapters also revisit the another (unplanned) August theme: abuse. I'm starting with the mother, for two reasons. One, she's actually named. And two, I'd rather begin with the more sympathetic side of the story.
236. Tomie Takami
Tomie Takami felt perpetually empty. Her husband, at least, filled her with an emotion like love, even though she knew normal marriages weren't like theirs. Most didn't have murder as a foundational event in their relationship, after all.
The thrill of being on the run waned considerably once Tomie became a mother. Keigo was a burden she felt shackled to, a view her spouse shared. Their child had wings but had stolen their freedom. And once her husband was arrested, the only possible joy Tomie could envision was washing her hands of Keigo and severing ties to the Takami name.
