Author's Note: Happy birthday to our yakuza princess, Akane-chan! I wrote this last year as part of my ASMR ambiance writing project. It was finished for the most part but I just had to add a little more to it. I got the idea from another video by Miracle Forest. It's the one where the car is driving through the clouds in the night sky. It's really cool. You should check it out. Next month will be Kadota and Ruri's birthdays. I already know what I am doing for Kadota's birthday, but I don't have anything planned for Ruri's just yet. You will have to stick around for next month to see. For now, enjoy this latest bite.
Drive My Car
Mikado awoke in another strange place. He took a look around. Soft cinnamon perfume teased his nose. There was a strap holding him in place from shoulder to waist. There was a windshield and dashboard in front of him. Was he… in a car? Not just that either. He narrowed his eyes. Were those clouds going by the windows? Mikado blinked but the image didn't change.
"Am I… in a car?" the tadpole boy asked.
"That's right, honey," a flirty voice said. Mikado looked over to his left. Gypsy was behind the wheel. She broke into a foxlike smile. Mikado blinked at her at first.
"Where are we?" he asked.
"Just taking a little drive in the sky," Gypsy said. "Oh and don't look down. That's not going to be good for the stomach."
"Good to know," Mikado said. He looked out the windshield. The clouds rushed by them. They gave off a light purple and pink hue.
"Why am I here?" he asked.
"We need to talk," Gypsy said. The tadpole boy froze.
"What is it now?" he asked. Mikado had the feeling that he wasn't going to like her answer.
"Noticed anything off lately?" she asked.
"Like what?" Mikado asked. He went through everything in his head. Where was he going to start with that answer? The tadpole boy looked out of the windshield in front of them. Nothing but clouds as far as the eye could see. He froze when he saw a pair of glowing eyes staring at him.
"What the-?!" the tadpole boy shouted. Gypsy giggled.
"Don't mind him," she said. "He just likes to pop out of the clouds from time to time. Don't worry. He won't bother us." Mikado wanted to believe her, but something in him knew otherwise. Still, the tadpole boy couldn't think about that right now. He went back to the issue at hand.
"How bad is it?" he asked again.
"Really bad," Gypsy said. She put her hand on his knee.
"We are all here for you," she said. Mikado pressed his lips together as he nodded.
"Where exactly are we going?" he asked.
"Do we have to go anywhere?" she asked. Mikado shrugged and shook his head. He leaned back in his seat. Things like this used to excite him. But he's been through this before. He's starting to lose track of how many times.
"What's a matter, baby?" Gypsy asked. Mikado shrugged. He didn't know how to put what he was thinking into words. Instead, he kept his eyes forward. The clouds rolled by them. It was so peaceful up here too.
"Is this what you do from time to time?" Mikado asked.
"Yes," Gypsy said. "Otherwise, I would be bored out of my mind," The tadpole boy saw the big shadowy figure again.
"Am I dreaming right now?" Mikado asked.
"Pretty much," she said.
"But I'm not asleep right now."
"Does it matter?"
Mikado shrugged and shook his head. She did have a point. He didn't feel the need to ask any more questions. The answers wouldn't matter. He leaned back in his seat. She never played the radio on these drives through the clouds. Somehow, moments like this didn't need it. The wind blowing outside calmed him down.
She still had her hand on his knee. He had an idea of what she was thinking.
"When was the last time you went to your chatroom?" Gypsy asked. Mikado looked up.
"What?" he asked. She had her answer just from his tone.
"You need to get on there some time," the ghost said. Mikado tilted his head.
"Why?" he asked.
"There are some rather interesting things going on there," Gypsy said. The tadpole boy felt around for his phone.
"You do know that you can't check it up here, right?" she spoke. Mikado froze with his finger hovering over the screen. He frowned as it turned into a shiny black mirror. Cell phones only worked in the living world. Mikado shoved his phone back into his pocket. Now what?
The boy looked out the window again. Lately, he had more questions. More questions than answers. It wasn't like Purgatory or Limbo had anything to give him. Gypsy looked at him out of the corner of her eye.
"Come on," she said. "What's on your mind? Talk to me." Mikado looked over at her. Where would he even know where to start?
"I wish I had the answers to stop all of this," Mikado said.
"You're getting all of your memories back, right?" Gypsy asked. He nodded once.
"How is the coming for you?" she asked. Mikado drew his knees to his chest as he frowned. Such a sore spot to bring up. Gypsy patted him on the shoulder.
"Come on," she said. "Let's just enjoy the rest of this ride. The sun will be coming up soon." Mikado leaned back in his seat. He's been in her car before. Sure, some of the conversation was different, but it was the same vibe.
"How many times have I been in this car?" he asked. "At least tell me that?" Gypsy took a moment to think about it as they passed that shadowy monster again.
"Counting this time, I would say about twenty times, give or take," she answered. Somehow, this didn't surprise Mikado.
"That sounds about right," he said. Gypsy smiled a sympathetic smile.
"Look, you all will get through this," she said. "We're here to help you."
"I know," Mikado said. "It's just…" He set his feet down on the floor.
"Something has gone horribly wrong," the tadpole boy said. "I think we might have missed something." He looked down at his hands in his lap. His "date" had a curious look on her face.
"Oh?" she asked. Mikado looked up at the car ceiling.
"I don't know," he said. "I have been going over it in my mind and I still can't find it. Somehow, something must have slipped through the cracks while we weren't looking."
"So you think there might be a leak somewhere?" she asked.
"Exactly," Mikado said. He buried his head in his hands.
"I just don't know where to start," he said. Gypsy slowed down her car. The tadpole boy looked up.
"Why are we slowing down?" he asked. "Are we stopping?" Gypsy took him by the hand.
"This might not be much," she said. "But maybe this drive could help give you something to think about." Mikado said nothing as he held her hand back. They said nothing for the rest of the drive.
He's ridden in her car many times. Gypsy loved her deep red Porsche. She had this car in life. She thought she lost it forever when she died. You can imagine her surprise when she was reunited with it.
"How did you do this?" she asked. Maria gave her a little smile.
"I pulled some strings for your birthday," she said. The woman bowed.
"Thank you so much!" she said. The woman would drive around in the skies and the living world. She would be driving alone. Gypsy only had one person in mind.
Despite having the car back, she can't drive freely whenever she wants. Limbo is just outside of hell after all. Souls don't get that many privileges. You have to earn them. Gypsy was one of the few who did so. Still, she had to follow the rules.
Mikado turned to her in the car.
"How often do you drive in the sky?" he asked.
"Not often," Gypsy said. She began to think about to her days alive. The car was the only means of escape. Means to escape from him. She wasn't weak by any means. Gypsy could hold her own in a fight and gave as much as she got. She would have just rather not have to deal with him at all.
"Do you like driving up here as opposed to driving out there?" Mikado asked.
"It depends on my mood," Gypsy said. "Do you like riding up here?" The tadpole shrugged.
"Don't know," he said. He wondered if it was possible to park in the sky. He did try to pleasure her while she was driving once. The more broken version of him would've gone ahead and tried. Gypsy seemed to like it when he tried to slip his hand into her panties.
He just didn't have it in him this time.
"It's okay, baby," Gypsy said. Mikado glanced at her from the corner of his eye. She didn't look at him.
"We can just sit here and enjoy the drive," she said. He didn't say a word.
"Right," she said. There were those glowing eyes outside again. The tadpole boy looked up at the rearview mirror. A pair of tiny black skulls hung from it.
"What are these?" he asked as he reached for them.
"Don't touch them!" Gypsy shouted. Mikado drew back his hand. Her tone made him shiver.
"I'm so sorry," he said. She shook her head and sighed.
"No, I'm sorry," Gypsy said. "They are just charms."
"To protect the car?" the tadpole boy asked.
"Yeah," she said. "I'm sorry. I didn't mind to yell at you." Mikado shook his head.
"No, it's fine," he said. Once again, they went quiet.
They made it back to Mikado's apartment. Gypsy pulled up to a stop. However, the tadpole didn't get out.
"Can I stay here for a while?" he asked.
"Sure," she said.
"Thank you," the tadpole said. They are going to do this again. This was his escape without sex. Sometimes, that was what he needed.
"What do you plan to do next?" Gypsy asked.
"Right now, sit here," Mikado said. "After that, go in and be on my computer for a while. And then… I don't know." She rested her head on his shoulder. He didn't bother to ask what she was doing. He just allowed it to happen. This was going to have to do for now.
