Chapter 14
(Toshi)
The light of the magic circle reflected off Toshi's eyes as she saw his mother slip, then fall, then vanish into the floor, the light snapping off like the lights when you touched the 'switch' by the door. Her command had frozen him in place, the importance of doing as you were told in an emergency well known to him.
But as the light faded, and left nothing but a bit of an afterimage in his eyes, and a weird magical tingle running over the fur of his tail, there was no trace of Kodori, save the book that had landed on the nice red chair/couch.
Turning, holding down tears, he did the other thing the children had all been taught very young. When something happens and you don't understand, you get an adult. "Aunty Aisha-san! I think it happened again!"
It wasn't... panic. No, the denizens of the Manor were far too professional for panic. Even for something like this. As a matter of fact, for something like this, they already had a system in place!
Considering this wasn't the first time it had happened, and Kodori's weird skill 'Eye of the Storm', it was just 'something that was going to happen eventually'.
So, the first thing they did, was start at the top.
Toshi was sitting in Haruhime's lap, his face worried but not upset. It was the Hime's practise to never start angry at what ever the children did. Instead, they would listen calmly, wait until the child (or children) figured out what went wrong on their own, and admit it was silly. Special cases of course existed... Like this one.
So, to the best of his ability, Toshi explained what happened, from the last time another adult had seen Kodori, to when she vanished. Around him, aside from Haruhime, were the three Gods of the Manor, the other six children, Haruhime of course, and the three captains, Bell (in Kodori's place), Ryuu and Aisha.
"Before dinner, we all went to the library." Toshi started, "O-ma asked us all to decide on a book for story time."
A common enough thing to happen, so no one stopped Toshi from continuing.
"The book was that book there." Toshi pointed at the book that was still on Hagane's couch/chair. "It was a good book! With a strange story about waves and des... um..." He paused to mumble the word out in his head, "Destruction. Yes!"
A few smiles, but also nods from Toshi's siblings.
"But then it was almost dinner time." He went on, "Then O-ma got us all to leave, but went there," He pointed to a table with an empty cup on it. They all knew it as a bookmark holder, "And marked a bunch of pages!"
All eyes went to the innocent looking tome on the couch/chair, then back to Toshi.
"I waited at the door, holding it open for O-ma." The adults nodded approval, since being polite was important. "But then there was a glow! And a circle! And O-ma threw the book away! She said 'Trap!' and then fell through the floor!" Toshi even mimicked the motions of 'throwing' then a pulling motion for Kodori falling through the floor. "Then... there was no more light or circle, and O-ma was gone."
He fell silent, and the adults shared a look. "Is that all?" Ryuu asked.
"Um... Then I went to find Auntie Aisha." Toshi added.
Another shared look, then a sigh.
"Hestia?" Takemikazuchi started, "Is she still with you?"
Hestia nodded, but looked worried, "It feels strange. I feel her life, but nothing else. Different than before, when she was so far from us on 'Earth'. Or on the other side of the Gate. All I can tell is... well she's alive."
All the other adults let out a little sigh, "Even her... prayer? Is it not reaching you?" Haruhime asked, knowing of Kodori's strange way of talking to Hestia.
"If she is, I can't hear it." Hestia shook her head.
"So, what do we do about it?" Aisha asked, "Won't be long before someone notices."
"Do we know where the book came from?" Bell asked.
"It was one of the books collected by Akeno-san and her friends." Haruhime said, giving Toshi's ears a little attention, then setting him down. She then gave all the other children's ears a pat, "Go wash up for dinner."
"Yes A-ma!"
Once they had evacuated, Ryuu spoke, "Akeno and Rias's peerage are good people, if strange. I doubt this was intentional on their part."
"Is there something strange about the book itself?" Astraea asked.
"After dinner we will have our magical experts look at it." Bell said, "I'll talk to Mr. Fels, and ask him to come visit?"
"He might know. What about Lelei?" Hestia asked, "She's a magical genius, right?"
"I think she's on Earth right now. Arpeggio is on this side though." Aisha said, "I like her more, but she's a little... scatterbrained."
"Can you talk to Akeno?" Hestia asked.
"Of course." Haruhime nodded, "After dinner is the usual time to contact them as well."
"What of Shinkage? She is not prone to feats of magic, but her knowledge is vast." Takemikazuchi said.
"The Brothers may have an idea." Bell offered, "Though they're more fighters, they have been around a long time, and know all kinds of things from Miss Kodori's world."
They pondered that for a moment, "Anyone else?" Aisha asked, "I don't want to sound pessimistic, but maybe warn our closest friends, like Lord Ganesha or Lord Ouranos, or even Royman about it?"
"Sir Royman will do his best to redirect people away from Kodori in an official capacity." Takemikazuchi nodded, "From him, Ouranos will find out. I do not thing others need know yet however... Ganesha may have something slip, even if he is a trusted friend."
"King Marius told us that if we want people to think everything is okay, then don't change anything." Bell said, "We should do just that, while we look into it ourselves."
"Oh... What about Fen-chan?" Ryuu asked.
With a sudden, nearly silent whoosh of air, the truck sized guardian of the Manor, and shadow of what was left of Fenrir's soul, appeared next to them. He sat like a good fox, but he had a subtle aggressive air around him.
That was, until he saw there was nothing wrong. Then he started looking around, his silent expression one of puzzlement.
"As you can see... He's still here." Hestia said, holding up her hand to the fox that was nearly two metres tall sitting down. "Yes, you are still a good boy." She added, standing up from the reading chair and scroofling his ghostly chin, "Do you have any idea where Kodori went?"
"Didn't he vanish when Kodori went through the Gate last time?" Bell asked.
"Perhaps she did something to bind him to the Manor properly?" Ryuu guessed as Fen-chan pulled his head away from Hestia's attention and sniffed the air silently.
They all watched as Fenrir turned his head towards the innocent looking tome on the couch/chair, and squinted at it. To anyone else, getting that look from Fenrir would turn their blood to ice and their bones to jelly. But the book didn't care.
"Well... He knows why at least." Hestia sighed, "Relax. Just... um... sniff that, and make sure it doesn't leave the property."
Fenrir stopped giving the book the look of death, stopped looking like he was going to pounce and eat it, and just... leaned down and wiggled his nose over it. He then stood by Hestia's side again, his tail flopping back and forth, obviously waiting for more headpats.
"Thank you." Hestia said, giving said headpats, "Dinner then, before we get to... figuring out what happened... again..." She sighed.
They all nodded and started to leave the library. Haruhime stayed until last, looking up at Fen-chan, then giving him a huge hug, wrapping her arms around his neck as best she could, "I'll do my best." She said.
Fen-chan lowered his head over Haruhime's shoulder, his best imitation of a hug, then nudged her with his nose as if to reminder her it was dinner time.
Excluding the immediate circle of Rias and her peerage as the 'guilty' party, they set aside 'who done it' and went to 'how done it'. It would take time, even for such experts of information mongering that the Devils were, to track down where every single book had come from, so, the Orario team worked on what hey could, instead of worrying about what they could not.
Arpeggio, Fels, Delly and Shinkage, the four most qualified 'magical experts' in Orario (at the moment), stood in the Library looking at the book.
"The Brothers said it didn't smell familiar." Shinkage said, "So we can likely exclude anything of 'Eastern' origin."
The other three nodded, "That area of your world specializes in more spiritual practise, correct?" Fels asked, his sand on tile voice thoughtful, "I may have to find an expert some time soon... Maybe from Earth."
"Be a nerd later." Delly giggled, "Well, what I can tell you, is it isn't illusion based. Any magic I can sense on it is very reality based. But a good translocation spell needs to be."
Arpeggio stopped tapping her chin, "What happens if it isn't?"
"Remember the apple? When you guys were testing the teleport spell for the Gate?"
Arpeggio went pale, "Oh... you don't think..."
"Lady Hestia said she lives. So we can assume she arrived where ever she went intact." Fels assured, "What else can you feel, Delly?"
No one had actually touched the book yet, and no one was about to do so now. Delly just put her hand near it, like she was testing a hot stove. "I'm not sure. It's not Eastern, as the Brothers said. It honestly doesn't feel like anything from Earth. Gah, we need Gasper! I miss the little guy..."
"Fortunately, Christian magic does not function here." Shinkage said, "But you feel something else, Delly?"
"Probably? It's so faint that it's more like a smell than a touch."
Yes, four magical experts, and all four of them saw magic differently. Collectively, they sighed.
"If you wanted to risk touching it?" Arpeggio started, "Though, Lady Kodori is sensitive to magic, right? If she didn't feel it then..."
"Oh! Maybe that's what I smell? A concealment spell?" Delly frowned, "But that is super specific!"
"What do you mean, Delly?" Fels asked.
"Most of us magic types, no matter who you are, and even if you aren't really..." Delly started to ramble, stopped herself, sighed, then reached around and grabbed her tail to hug. "Okay... Welf. He's not really a magical type. Too much of an anvil head, too much iron in his blood. But when he touches something metal, or anything to do with metal, he just... knows what he can do with it."
"Very instinctual." Shinkage nodded, "Honed to a point where he is like a master wine taster, except with metal."
"Yes! That!" Delly pointed at Shinkage, "Exactly that! Most people who deal with anything magic, start to 'feel' the magic in stuff they deal with. Welf with metal, me with illusion and air magic. Ryuu with Spirits. Fels with artifacts. Arpeggio with minerals."
"So... a concealment spell?" Arpeggio tried to get Delly back on track.
"Yes!" Everyone kind of shied back a little from the excitable fox pixie. "Think about that! It went through the Devils, Fels, all of us, Haruhime, ALL the children, and finally Kodori. Without being noticed." She finished ominously.
"So you're saying... This was targeted?" Arpeggio asked.
"I would ask, 'who would want to do this to Kodori'?" Shinkage sighed, "But the list is very long."
The four of them sighed again, knowing that list included all manner of beings, mortal, devil, divine, gods...
"So back to your point, Delly?" Arpeggio asked.
"Oh! Well, the more power you have in a concealment spell, the harder it is to hide the spell. So there are two options really..." Delly replied.
"Spend just a tiny bit more time on the concealment spell as the trap." Fels said, getting a nod from the others.
"Or have a very specific target in mind, and have trigger conditions that only work when they are met." Delly said, "That hints at blood magic... brr..."
"And it doesn't narrow things down at all." Shinkage sighed, "Blood magic is used all over Earth."
Again, the four of them sighed.
For the next week, all efforts were made to figure things out. Past the initial 'how' though, not much could be discerned. At least, not without touching it.
Before that however, the people of the Manor had to inform their trusted friends. The Guild, very specifically, Royman and Eina, needed to be told. As much as she didn't like it, Kodori was a figurehead for the city, and occasionally had to meet 'the people'. Be it a social function, an introduction, a new idea from the Odds Workshop, advice about the people from Earth, or meeting various ambassadors from Earth who were staying at the Gate House Base... It was a long list, and the Guild (knowing that Kodori hated having to be famous) tried to keep those meetings to a minimum.
Sadly, due to diplomatic contract with Earth, when someone said, "I want to talk to the Strongest," Well, it had to happen.
"Well." Royman sighed, looking at the book (now covered in a super fine but noticeable layer of dust), "We'll do our best to delay any meetings.
Haruhime and Hestia were there, and had just finished telling the two Guild Masters (not official yet, but the entire city knew at this point).
"Thank you, Royman-san." Haruhime smiled, "We can't really apologize, but we can feel sorry for the extra work you'll have to do."
"You've already started to look into who and how?" Eina asked.
"Of course. Though all we can say so far is 'she is still alive'." Hestia sighed, "I would ground her when she got back, but..." She put on an evil smile, "She'll be allowed out to do paperwork." It was a forced smile, but the sentiment was sincere.
"Very well. We'll simply tell anyone who wishes to speak with her that she is indisposed. That won't work long however..." Royman said. "And there will be no hope of hiding it when we open the Gate next."
"Who else have you told so far, Lady Hestia?" Eina asked.
"Well, you two, Fels, and our friends on the other side that gave us the books." A pause as Hestia tapped her chin, "Ah, and Lelei's sister, Arpeggio."
"Good. Please, keep it to yourselves as best you can." Royman said with a little sigh, "I am sure anyone you tell would keep the secret, but a careless comment in passing would be the end of the charade."
"Have you heard anything from the other side?" Eina asked.
"Akeno-chan and her friends are due to check in tonight." Haruhime said.
That night, a few minutes after most of the Manor had settled into 'quiet time', Akeno did indeed call. It started with a little chat over the Tarot, before switching over to the Occulus.
"Ha-san." Akeno greeted Haruhime, the two of them looking down a long black corridor at each other. "I wanted... I wanted to talk first like this."
"A moment." Haruhime said, standing and giving the children around her headpats with her free hand, "A-ma will be back soon, then we can talk with Akeno-san." She smiled, then left the living room, wandering down one of the long halls of the Manor. "No-chan?"
"How are you holding up? I know it's only been a week, but..." Akeno started, worry clear on her face.
Haruhime smiled, "It is much different this time." She said, "Though it worries me, the city is in much better place than when she arrived there."
Akeno tried to smile, but she couldn't do it, "That... That can't be all..."
"Do not misunderstand, No-chan." Haruhime smiled, "I miss her dearly, and all her friends and family do as well. But tomorrow is a blessing, not a promise. We will do our best to find her, and she will do her best to return to us. I..."
Akeno saw the small crack in Haruhime's calm, but didn't dare point it out. "We will all do our best." Akeno said instead, "I'll have your Tarot on me at all times, so if you need to talk, or find anything new..."
"Of course." Haruhime nodded, "Speaking about that, have you found something?"
The breakdown averted, for now, Akeno all but jumped at the topic change, "Yes, and no. This may be better for all to hear though."
Haruhime returned to the living room, and some thoughtful soul (Delly) had already set up the Occulus projector and started the call to make sure everything was in focus.
"Ah! Hello Lady Haruhime." Gasper greeted, his face close enough to the Occulus that his image was starting to distort slightly, "And... there?"
Delly nodded, "Perfect. Haven't lost your touch kiddo!"
"Am I late?" Fels asked as he drifted into the living room, Arpeggio striding next to him.
"Just in time." Gasper said, "Ah, Akeno-san? We're just starting."
Akeno appeared next to Gasper and walked behind him, giving the still effeminate half vampire a pat across the back and shoulders that you might have imagined was a little more intimate than it seemed, and sat down primly on a nice red couch behind him. "Good evening everyone. Is that all we are expecting?"
There really weren't many in the living room. The three Gods, each on their favourite chairs. Haruhime, Delly, Shinkage, Fels and Arpeggio. The children, as children do, got bored the instant Haruhime stopped story time and had wandered off to play.
Shinkage spoke, setting her book down. "Pretend nothing has changed, and fewer will notice the problem. Most of the Manor is in the dungeon, or working in the city."
"Ah, and since Sensei spends so much time in the workshop, no one will notice her not being in the dungeon." Gasper nodded, "We're just waiting for..."
He was interrupted by a deep blue teleport circle appearing mostly in frame beside Akeno's seat. A moment later, Sona appeared, looking picture perfect as always. She was still wearing a school uniform, but this one was that of a Teacher, not a student.
"Pardon my tardiness." She said without even looking at who was on the other side of the Occulus, "I am beginning to understand why teachers of the Mortal Realm keep going on strike." She turned to look at those gathered in the Manor, "Ah, pretending nothing is wrong, and keeping up appearances."
No one was surprised the master strategist would understand the sparse turnout at a glance. "Good evening, Sona-san." Haruhime greeted, "Ko-san mentioned that... something about working 'unpaid over time'."
"Indeed. It is a depressing topic, so we will not speak of it until later." Sona sat next to Akeno, "Lady Rias and Lord Issei are following up on some leads, but otherwise we have gone over the list as best we can."
Straight to the point, everyone on the Orario side of the call leaned in just a little closer, "And did you find anything?" Hestia asked, "Did you find out who took my Child away, again?"
It was rare to hear frost in Hestia's voice. "Unless those leads turn up something, no." Sona admitted, "Both our information nets have been cast, and almost every book, and their donor, has been tracked back to their place of acquisition."
Everyone in the living room frowned, "So you know where all the books came from, and they were not suspect at all?" Astraea asked.
"All but three. The book you have is one. But also two others." Sona said, "Comparing it to the inventory you sent us of your shelves, two of those books are not even in your collection."
"Wait, so there are two other books that might be magical world jumping traps?" Delly asked, "That's..."
"Do not panic." Sona said, "Simply do not touch the books again until we find out."
"Speaking of." Gasper started, "Ah, pardon, Lady Sona."
"Go ahead." Sona said, perking up and taking out a cell phone from her vest pocket.
"Well, Delly? I came up with a Fairy Friendly way to manipulate that book. I'm sure by now you can't learn anything new until you open it so..." Gasper clapped his hands twice, then opened them, a complex magic circle forming between his hands.
Again, everyone leaned in, "Can you... Just a little closer... To the left? No no your left." Delly directed, then "Aha, right there, hold still."
All three of the 'magic circle capable' magic users started to replicate the circle, keeping a little distance from everyone else just in case they got it wrong. "Ah! Miss Arpeggio, it's backwards." Gasper said.
"Oh! Right, mirror image... Like so?"
It took a few rather amusing minutes for the three of them to get it, then test it, the effect similar to a 'magic hand' spell, save that it was far gentler. "I use this spell for working on super delicate and sensitive magic computers. Well, I modified it so it would work in your world, but yeah! It's like wearing a glove to hide the magic you're using to touch something."
"Well, you'll be able to turn the pages." Shinkage nodded, "Just do not show that to Loki. She would use it for evil."
Mild, very naughty evil, but evil all the same. They all agreed without voicing the idea.
"We will try this, and contact you if it reveals any new information." Fels said, already using the 'magic hand' spell to move little things around the room, "Quite a clever trick, very efficient."
"Too much magic can spoil the enchantment." Gasper smiled at the praise.
"We've tracked down one of the two books." Sona said, "Ah it seems Irina-san borrowed it, and didn't return it before it went across."
"Air headed angel?" Delly said with a giggle, "Well, since she didn't end up... where ever it is the Boss went... That just leaves two."
"We'll continue our efforts then." Sona said, "Good luck, and let us know if you require anything. We will have it ready to send by the time the Gate is opened again."
Another week, and little to show for it.
The three mages able to use the 'Gentle Hand' spell Gasper had shown them, had gone through the book front to back, twice, each. The children, safely behind a layered barrier spell, talked about some of the things as the three of them read the pages. Most of it was about the stuff Kodori had read to them. The rest of it was complaining, then pouting, when Fels started to read some of the Sword Hero's story out loud.
"O-ma is gonna read it to us!" "Yeah!" "When she gets back she'll read it!" They had said, making Fels not only fumble his spell, nearly dropping the book, but slump his shoulders in defeat.
"I was careless, please forgive me?"
There was a silent 'conference' between the seven, then Kei spoke for them all, "Teach us magic later!"
"I will ask Lady Haruhime what I can teach you, then do my best to do so." Fels replied seriously.
Eight pairs of eyes went to Haruhime, who had hidden her laughter behind her kimono sleeve, "I will allow it." She said after a moment. "After dinner."
"Yay!"
"But we have work to do now. Why not see if the Oni want to play in the pool?" Haruhime suggested.
"Yes O-ma!"
Once quiet had fallen over the library again, Delly, Fels, Arpeggio and Haruhime sighed. "We still haven't really figured out anything."
"On the contrary." Fels said, the smile clear in his voice, if not his face. "It is something that gives me hope, as well."
All eyes went to him, and he summoned up his Gentle Hand spell again, "This book is clearly speaking of another world. That much is certain. Lady Kodori is likely there, now. That is likely. But!" He used his free hand to point his index finger into the air, "That this book was on Earth, meant one of two things..."
The three of them (yes, even Haruhime, though she had very little talent for 'free form' magic), considered this. Then Arpeggio perked up, "The book, or the person, had to get back to Earth!"
"Very good, Miss Arpeggio." Fels nodded.
"Then... There is a way back." Haruhime said, "Even if she has not, or cannot, contact us, there has been at least one person to make it back from this place 'Melromarc'."
"Oh! Ohhhhhh... sneaky..." Delly gave the book 'the look', "Back near the beginning, it said 'four heroes', and each got a weapon."
"Indeed. Though, I wonder how a legendary weapon would work in Kodori's hands..." Fels mused.
"No no... If this is a summoning, this book might be part of a ritual. You know, oh wait, you wouldn't know... It's like... 'whomever holds this thingy, is now beholden to etc etc."
"So Lady Kodori accidentally ended up as part of... some magic contract?" Arpeggio asked.
"It's possible." Delly nodded, "But it might also explain why no one sensed it! It was getting it's power from someplace else, and Kodori just happened to be holding the book when that 'power' was used."
"Ah, so the book was simply a 'key' not a 'trap'." Fels said, his hand vanishing into his hood to stroke his chin, "That is something of a long shot, is it not?"
Haruhime sighed, "My wife's luck is sharp on both sides I'm afraid. So if this is just a... 'wrong place at the wrong time', as you suggest, well... It wouldn't be the first time, would it?" She looked at Delly.
"Oh... yeah... suppose not. But it would explain the lack of sensation! I mean, the Boss had to basically turn off her magic senses to get a decent sleep! A portal that's able to pull someone to a place far enough that even Lady Hestia can't hear her? She'd have felt it instantly."
"Well... We have a working hypothesis on 'how', then." Fels said, "We will work with that in mind unless we find evidence against it."
"Now, we search for 'who'?" Haruhime asked.
"Or where?" Arpeggio asked, "I mean... 'who' doesn't seem as important? Getting Lady Kodori back would better, right?"
Haruhime shook her head, "Who, would solve 'why', and possibly 'how'." Her voice was still gentle, but her eyes hinted at 'how' she would ask 'who'. "I trust my wife to help us discover 'where', since she is already there and no doubt working towards trying to contact us."
The three mages nodded, "Besides, if the Boss gets back before we figure out 'who', we might not get to ask 'why' and 'how' before she stops it from ever happening again." She smacked her small fist into her opposite palm meaningfully."
Three weeks. It had been just over three weeks since Kodori vanished.
Contrary to what some thought, nothing bad had happened. The dungeon didn't suddenly run wild. The average life expectancy for a level one adventurer stayed the same. The trains ran on time. The people worked and played as usual.
Most of this was due to people simply doing their jobs. Adventurers continued to slay monsters. Citizens worked the jobs adventurers did not. And all of Orario followed the rules of the Guild. More or less. But that was normal, even if 'The Strongest' was currently 'working on something and was not to be disturbed'.
If anyone was suspicious, it didn't show. If there was a culprit to Kodori's disappearance, they didn't show themselves. Life went on as usual.
Inside the Manor, it was slightly less calm. This wasn't the first time Kodori had suddenly vanished, and unlike the first time, the Manor was in a much better state, and didn't need to rely on her being there. (You know, to be a mother/father, captain, and general deterrent to a Goddess who wanted to steal her children.) Still, when ever they could get away with it, or had an opportunity to, those who understood any amount of magic were trying to figure out 'who' and 'why'.
But it was mid afternoon, just as they were cleaning up after lunch, when Hestia herself discovered 'where'.
For a city of Gods, it was incredibly rare for one to do something 'godly'. Occasionally, one would show off part of their natural skill. Such as Takemikazuchi and his martial ability. Or Soma and his unbeatable ability to make wine.
But when Hestia suddenly dropped a plate she had been drying, started glowing, and floating just off the ground... well, everyone was very surprised.
"Hestia-sama! What's happening?" Haruhime asked, wanting to hold the Goddess so she wouldn't float away (though she wasn't going anywhere, just... floating in place) but worried that touching her might interrupt something important.
Hestia took a deep breath, her arms out to either side, her toes pointed down towards the floor, her blue eyes glowing like spotlights, "I see where she's gone."
It was the first time anyone in the Manor had heard that tone of voice from a God, much less Hestia. It was filled with power, loaded with barely contained anger, "Can you help her! Can you speak to her? Can she speak to us?!"
Slowly, the glow around Hestia dimmed... no... became focused. She brought her outstretched arms together, the glow pooling towards her hands, and she reached forward with one hand, a motion she'd done to everyone in the manor, no matter the Familia. It was the motion, the touch, she used to encourage people. That small warm hand pushing Her Child forward.
But that voice, that voice of power remained, though the anger was gone now, "Fight, and return home at the end of the day, my Beloved Kitsune." Her hand, elbow and shoulder moved slightly, pushing at something invisible, "this is all I can do for you..."
And with a blink, like a flipped switch or closed book, Hestia stopped glowing and fell into the arms of Haruhime, her body hot with fever, even though her sleeping face was smiling as if she'd accomplished a great task.
Haruhime kept Hestia's bare feet off the floor, away from the shards of the broken plate Hestia had dropped, and called for an 'expert' since she had no idea what had just happened. "Astraea-sama! Takemikazuchi-sama!"
