The more she looked at this place the more… dead it felt. The endless expanses of the brown desert were an almost surreal view for the girl as she looked out through the humvee's window. The only sign of life she could see was the occasional Joshua tree and bush, but other than that…

Fionna turned her gaze to the man driving the jeep, Six, At first she thought they'd be fast friends but given what happened earlier at the base. What he said sat wrong with her, almost as wrong as the pistol that now sat in a holster on her hip and the rifle she was supposed to use now attached to her backpack in a sling.

She glanced at that pip thing Six had given her earlier, sighing when it told her they'd just been driving for ten minutes. She swore that it felt way longer than that.

"So, didn't ask earlier but what's your sister like?" the question cut through the silence like a chainsaw, Fionna glancing at Six.

"She gives me some pretty good advice, most of the time anyway. And she always has my back. Oh, and she really likes it when you scratch her behind the ear."

"Ah… What?"

"Cause she's a cat." Fionna shrugged. "Ya'know?"

"Like… she has cat ears?" Six glanced at her, his curiosity peaking.

"No, she's a cat."

"Oh… Ok." Six replied evenly before laughing to himself. "I don't know why I'm even surprised." He admitted with a chuckle, Fionna laughing with him. When she thought about it, her sister being a cat is kinda funny all things considered.

"Anyways. There's this place coming up that I wanted to show ya, It's a race track and there should be a race scheduled for today." Fionna raised an eyebrow.

"But I thought we had to be somewhere?"

"Eh, it's not super urgent. Besides we've got a lotta time to kill." Six replied with a shrug as the jeep pulled in closer to a parking lot in front of some kind of rest stop, the jeep being the only car in the lot.

As they stepped out Fionna looked at the pitstop and how there was barely anyone there, only one guy sipping at a soda. However, she did hear the sounds of what she thought was mechanical work inside the pitstop's garage.

"The race should be in a half hour, so if you wanna see it there should be a ticket booth inside here. If not, stock up on snacks and soda." Six said as he locked the jeep, he then reached into his coat and pulled out a small bag before tossing it to her.

Fionna caught the bag, the jiggling of coins inside catching her attention. She took a peak inside the bag and then shot Six an unamused look. "Bottle caps, I know it's what you guys use around here but why? Why bottle caps?" Her question was completely genuine with a hint of frustration behind her tone.

"Well uh, why not? You can find em everywhere and they look pretty neat." Six shrugged. "Besides, they're hard to counterfeit so it protects against inflation." Fionna considered the words and looked back into the bag.

"They do look kinda neat." She admitted.

"See? But yeah, I have some business I need to take care of, you go in and get whatever you want along with some tickets." Six said as he pulled his pip-boy out of his coat. Fionna nodded and entered the pit stop.

Looking around she saw a long line at the front and huffed before turning her attention to the racks filled with all kinds of candy and junk food.

She giggled at the vast selection of snacks she could pick and choose from. Grabbing an armful she shoved the snacks into her backpack.

Six walked through the desert, away from the pitstop and towards one of the nearby caves, Each step he took was measured and he made no sound. When someone looked in his direction they'd just see a passing shadow.

In the distance, he saw his target, one of the many caves that dotted the Mojave. Near the cave was a scout, almost impossible to spot from a distance thanks to a combination of camo and a tarp that looked like another rock that dotted the Mojave.

As Six got closer to the scout he saw the woman was peering at the cave with a pair of binoculars, her rifle off to the side.

"Spot anything good?" Six asked, watching in amusement as the scout almost jumped out of her armor at his sudden appearance next to her. The woman scrambled to pull out her sidearm and rushed to aim it at him but stopped when she realized who it was that sneaked up on her.

"Waddup?" Six asked casually as the woman looked at him wide-eyed before shaking her head and looking back at the cave.

"You're an asshole, sir." She said after a moment of Silence, Six barked out a small laugh before shaking his head. "I know." He muttered before turning his gaze to the cave.

"Regardless, what exactly did you see?" Six continued to look at the cave, he could see movement.

"At first I thought it was a group of ferals but…" She trailed off as she tried to find the right words. "They were really green, like a super mutant, but way too small to be one of those." She continued while looking through the binocs.

Six hummed to himself in thought, rubbing the chin of his gasmask before deciding on a course of action.

"Alright, I'm gonna go in and talk to em, provide overwatch and fire support if anything goes wrong." Six ordered as he stood up, the scout nodding as she shouldered her rifle and looked down the Acog sight.

The Courier walked towards the cave at a calm pace, taking off his helmet and clipping it to his belt before shoving his hands into his pockets. Not showing any signs of fear or hesitation as he stood in front of the cave entrance.

Looking at it for a moment he could tell that whatever was inside chose to stay quiet and stick to the back of the cave, definitely more afraid of him than he was of them.

He grinned to himself before knocking on the edge of the cave. "Hello? Anyone home?" He asked. "Just wanna talk." Six continued, keeping a calm tone of voice and casual posture.

After a moment and some whispering inside one of the creatures hesitantly walked to the opening of the cave. It was a diminutive little thing, the thing barely came up to his waist as it nervously twiddled its fingers. Wearing what looked like some tattered leather pants and wrappings around its chest.

The creature looked up at Six with big, almost cat-like eyes as its giant knife-shaped ears twitched every so often. Six studied it for a moment before putting on a friendly smile.

"Heya pal names Six. Nice to meet cha." He then held out his hand, the thing looked surprised for a moment before grabbing Six's hand and shaking it.

"N-Nice to meet you too Mister, I'm glimglom." The creature introduced himself in a soft-spoken manner, Six pausing as he fully registered the name. Fighting not to burst out laughing at the silly name.

"Same here, uh, Glimglom." The two broke the handshake. "So, not to be rude or anything but I haven't seen anything like you around here."

"O-Oh, well I'm a goblin sir." Glimglom explained before his eyes widened and he remembered something. "Oh dear, would you like to come inside? I could tell you more over some tea and cookies." The Goblin gestured to the inside of the cave.

"I'd love to." Six said with a smile as the Goblin nodded gleefully and showed Six inside the cave. As the two entered the cave Six paused as he saw far more Goblins huddled in the cave than he originally anticipated.

One looked like an exact copy of Glimglom, clothes and all while two of the goblins looked more feminine so he assumed they were women but he could be wrong. There was an elderly-looking goblin on a wheelchair with a grey beard as long as he was and about a dozen smaller goblins that he could only assume to be children.

"Hello everyone! This is Six, he'll be joining us for tea." Glimglom said as he introduced the mailman. Everyone turning to him and waving

"Hello, Six!" They all greeted cheerfully, waving with unmitigated enthusiasm and glee.

"Uh, Hi!" He greeted back with a small wave of his own as Glimglom turned back to him.

"Six that right there is my twin brother Snipsnap."

"Yo."

"That's my wife Clampclomp."

"Hello!"

"Her sister Gamgum."

"Hey there!"

"Grandpa Farfem"

"Huh?"

"And there are our kids Amble, Bamble, Camble, Damble, Eamble, Famble, Gamble, Hamble, I-amble, Jamble-"

"Alright!" Six cut the goblin off, maybe a little too abruptly. "Alright, I-I think I get it now. So the last two are Kamble and Lamble right?" Six asked sarcastically and Glimglom raised an eyebrow in confusion.

"What? No, why would you think that? Their names are Jeff 1 and Jeff 2." Six looked at the Goblin for a moment, dumbfounded before he slowly started to nod, pretending to understand.

"... Oh, right… Of course."

Fionna shoved the remaining snacks into her backpack and pocketed the bag of caps. As she put her pack back on and waved goodbye to the clerk she exited the pitstop and walked back into the parking lot.

Her nose scrunched up almost instantly as the wasteland air permeated around her, smelling like rusted iron. Combined with the heat of the desert she immediately regretted stepping out of the insulated pitstop.

Sighing she made her way to the jeep to see if Six was back yet but stopped when she saw two people spray-painting the side of the jeep.

"Hey!" She yelled out, the two teens turning around and bolting, dropping their spray cans and running like their lives depended on it. Fionna sighed and walked over to the jeep, frowning as she saw the graffiti.

"Oh, that's just great." She muttered to herself, looking it over she saw some cloaked figure in all black with neon red eyes, the figure holding a scythe with the word 'courier' written under the graffiti.

"The heck's that supposed to mean?" She muttered before reaching into her pack and pulling out a small bag of chips.

"Yo, You the girl that rode in with the Courier, right?" She heard a deep voice ask, Turning her head she saw a dark-skinned man wearing a grease-stained dark blue jumpsuit and sitting in a wheelchair.

Fionna looked around for a moment, looking to see if maybe this was a trick Six had set up, when she saw nothing out of the ordinary she nodded. "Yeah, Six is my bud. What of it?"

The man in the wheelchair raised an eyebrow before just shaking his head. "Your vault must have only opened recently huh? Then you should know that your 'bud' has a reputation around here." The man then wheeled closer to her and glanced at the graffiti.

Fionna furrowed her eyebrows in confusion before looking back at the graffiti again, realization striking her as she connected the dots.

"Oh…" Fionna looked conflicted for a moment. "Uh, I'm Fionna, by the way. Nice to meet you." She said with a small smile, trying to ease the tension slightly. The man glanced at her unamused before sighing.

"Just call me Boxcars, I'm a mechanic round here; despite me being a useless fuckin cripple I'm pretty good with cars it turns out." The man said with a sardonic tone as he shrugged, Fionna mentally cringing at his casual potty mouth.

"Oh neat, but could you not swear, please?" She asked kindly, Boxcars looking like he was about the scoff before glancing at the jeep again and bitting back whatever comment he was going to make.

"I'll try to, but no promises, got it?" Boxcars spat out, Fionna nodding as she opened her bag of chips and ate a few. "Aight."

Boxcars sighed in exasperation before shaking his head. "Alright, so the guys that tagged your ride? Don't hold it against em, they're a buncha dipsh-..." Boxcars paused, glancing at the jeep again before grumbling.

"Buncha idiot kids that used to run with some gangs way back before your 'bud' made the Mojave his territory. Those gangs ain't worth sh-... mentioning no more but that is something you should know."

Fionna hummed to herself, a slight grimace flashing across her face. Her mind drifted back to what Six had told her at that fort.

"Hey, uh…" She sucked in a small breath. "This is gonna sound bananas but… has he… killed people?"

Boxcars turned to her so quickly he might have gotten whiplash, the man looking at her like she had grown a second head. "The hell kinda question is that? He killed so many people that you could have made a goddamn mountain of corpses the size of Hoover Dam!"

The mechanic grumbled. "'Has he killed people?' Of fuckin course he killed people. He ain't called the goddamn grim fuckin reaper 'cause he liked picking flowers."

Fionna looked taken aback before frowning. "H-Hey! You said you wouldn't swear!" She punctuated by pointing a finger at the man.

"That was before you asked me a dumbass question like that! Your buddy is the biggest damn killer on the West Coast!" Boxcars grumbled out before shaking his head and scoffing. "Christ, you soft Vault Dwellers."

Fionna frowned at the mechanic, huffing before crossing her arms. "Oh yeah! Well, you're a butt face!" She punctuated by pointing a finger at the man. Boxcars rolled his eyes and grumbled.

"You twelve or something? Waste of my time tryin' to help you out a lil and…" Whatever the mechanic was going to say next died in his throat, eyes going wide as his face paled. As though he had caught a glimpse of the Grim Reaper.

"Whatcha guys talkin' bout?" A soft, almost friendly voice rang out from behind her. Fionna almost jumped in surprise before a groan escaped her mouth, she spun on her heel and jabbed at Six's arm. A laugh came from The Courier as she glared at him light-heartedly.

"You jerk! Don't spook me like that." Fionna said while jabbing at Six's arm, The Courier pretending to be hurt before chuckling.

"Sorry, can't help it." He explained before glancing at Boxcars, the mechanic holding The Courier's gaze in spite of the sheer terror he felt when he first saw the man.

"Howdy Boxcars, how's the car thing goin for ya?" Six asked, acting like he was reconnecting with an old acquaintance. Boxcars didn't say anything for a moment before nodding.

"I complain bout it a lot, but it ain't too bad." Boxcars glanced at Fionna. "Heard you've got a lot on your plate lately."

"Yeah, but you know me. Nothin' I can't handle." Six said with a chuckle. "Welp, nice catchin' up. See you around." The Courier began to walk away, a slight pep in his step. He paused for a moment before glancing back at the two of them. "Y'all can continue your conversation, I won't eavesdrop, promise." His tone was sardonic before he laughed to himself, continuing to waltz away.

Fionna waved as he left, Six waving back while still walking away. The Courier Eventually disappeared from sight as he entered the convenience store.

"Christ…" Boxcars muttered to himself before shaking his head. "Can't stand him." The Mechanic muttered, Fionna, glancing at him before frowning.

"Hey, he's not that bad." She whined in response. Boxcars glowering at her.

"Listen, you're the one gettin all pissy 'cause he killed a few people."

"A little, yeah." Fionna frowned. "But he's not a bad guy, I mean… I've killed things too. It's different sure, but he can't be that bad.

"That and, I doubt he's killed as many as you said he has. That's just bananas." She said while crossing her arms. Boxcars looked like he was going to argue before just grumbling to himself.

"Yeah, sure, you keep believing that." He grumbled before unlocking his wheelchair and rolling away. Fionna gave him the stink eye before very maturely sticking her tongue out at him as he left.

"What a jerkwad." She muttered to herself. She then stuck a hand back into her pack and took out another bag of junk food, some two-century-old snack cakes pumped full of preservatives. Yum.

While munching on her creme-filled snacks she noticed a small shadow had enveloped her, raising an eyebrow she glanced up. Confusion gave way to a smile as she tossed the bag aside and held her arms apart, waiting for the hug that was soon to follow.

"FIONNA!" An all too familiar voice cried out from far above her.

"CAKE!" She screamed in joy moments before something slammed into her. The two fell to the ground as they held each other in a tight embrace. Both sisters cried tears of joy.

As the two continued to hug Lord Monochromicorn slowly came down from the sky, landing next to the two. Stamping on the ground with a rhythmic beat, catching Cake's attention. The sisters broke their hug as Cake glanced at her hubby.

"Oh you shouldn't worry so much Lord, I'm fine ain't I?" Lord Monochromicorn just huffed, Cake shook her head fondly before looking back at her sister. The cat's eyes widened before they narrowed.

"Oh glob, Honey what in the world are you wearin'?" Cake asked as she picked at the washed-out vault suit and the Kevlar vest over it. Fionna looked down at her armor before shrugging, picking Cake up as she stood up.

"I don't know, it's some armor my friend gave me." Fionna said. "Apparently my shirt and skirt were torn apart when we got displaced."

"What?" Cake cried out, dismayed. "But your clothes were so cute. These are so…" She gestured at the washed-out and decades-old jumpsuit. "Not cute." Fionna just shrugged.

"I guess, but I kinda like it. It's super comfy, like PJs." She told the cat, Cake looked unhappy before sighing.

"When I get the chance I'm making you new clothes. Cause those." She pointed at the vest and jumpsuit. "Are not it."

Fionna pouted slightly. "I think it looks cool." She muttered.

"I agree, it is it kinda cool." Six's voice rang out, catching everyone off guard as they turned towards him. The Courier leaned against the wall, standing there for who knows how long. "Practical too."

"Right, and who are you?" Caked asked, her eyes narrowed in suspicion at the guy in all-black armor.

"Don't worry Cake, that's my bud, Six." Fionna said with a smile, Six waving at Cake and Lord.

"Pleasure to meet ya both. As Fionna said, I'm Six." The Courier said as he pushed himself off the wall and walked closer to the trio. Cake looked him up and down for a moment before stretching out a hand. Lord Monochromicorn tapped one of his hooves in a set pattern.

"Nice to meet you too." She said, Six shaking it before glancing at Lord.

"Thanks for the kind words Mr. Chromicorn." Breaking the handshake.

"Uh-huh. Now, Thanks for keeping Fionna safe Six. We gotta get back to the candy kingdom." Cake said, Fionna nodding in agreement.

"Yeah, some of my other friends are there too and they're prolly worried. Thanks for your help though." Fionna continued, Six hummed in thought.

"While I understand, I do still need your help with something." Six said before pointing a finger at a distant tower. "I need you to come with me to over there." He lowered his finger and looked back at the two.

"It'd be a hell of a lot easier to convince my peers of what happened if you were with me. After that, you can go on home to this 'Candy Kingdom'." Six said. "It won't take long, promise." He continued.

Cake looked like she was gonna speak up but Fionna cut her off. "Sure, no harm in it." She said with a smile. Cake and Lord both glanced at her before lord tapped his hoove, agreeing with the blonde.

The cat sighed in annoyance. "Alright, we'll go with you for now."

Six nodded, a smile spreading under his mask. "Great, we'll be in and out." He Said before unlocking the Humvee. "Hop in, won't take long." Six said before everyone entered the vehicle. Fionna and Cake lounged in the passenger seat as Lord Monocromicorn shoved himself into the rear, taking up the entirety of the back seats.

North Vegas

Hidden away in one of the many caverns outside of the shining city, lay a den that fiends once called home. Now a hideaway for outcasts and former raiders, shunned by Vegas.

Out of sight, out of mind. Most of the city unaware of what vile creatures now resided inside said cave.
