Hello, everyone! Love how the timeline is very much engaged with Sarah's recurring role on Chicago Med. Certain scenes have inspired me to write and make it all about Darvey (yes, because I don't think I'll ever move on from them hahaha!). I wasn't planning on making this a multichap but we'll see... Hope you enjoy!

He received the call just as he exited his client's building. His trip back to the firm was postponed, a detour taken to reach the hospital as soon as possible.

"Mr. Harvey Specter? This is from New York Presbyterian Hospital. You are listed as the emergency contact of Dr. Donna Paulsen…"

The words play in his head on a loop as he sits anxiously in the back seat of Ray's car. His leg hasn't stopped shaking the whole ride, only changing its movement when he walked out of the car and into the hospital.

He reaches the front desk and asks for her room. The nurse directs him to the hall on the right, an area more private than the others. He whispers his thanks before slowly making his way to where she is.

It's been quite some time since they last saw each other, not since their relationship has reached its end, something neither one of them ever expected. They care for each other, always have and always will. But with their careers at the top of their priorities, things hadn't quite worked out in their favor.

He pauses just outside her room, his hand holding on to the knob. He hesitates for a moment. He has no idea what will happen when he gets in there. What will he say? What will he do? Nothing. He knows nothing.

But what he does know is that, when he got that call, he knew he just had to be there for her.

He takes a deep breath before finally entering the room, white sheets and white walls welcoming him in. It shouldn't come as a surprise to him anymore, the sight similar to whenever he pays her a visit here. But the only difference is she's now the patient on the bed rather than the doctor checking in.

He quietly makes his way to her side, every movement so careful to not cause any disturbance. She is resting just like the nurse said earlier. Her eyes are closed, her hair out of its usual ponytail and fanned over the pillow. She is quite pale, a little more than usual but he can almost hear her voice saying, "I'm a redhead, that's normal." He immediately knows she's been working herself too hard.

Her dedication to her job is what he admires most about her. She has always been hardworking and passionate, but definitely knew her limits. So it baffles him that she reached this point, especially when the nurse explained that she lost consciousness just before doing her rounds.

He slowly lifts his hand and gently places it on her bed, just beside where her hand is lying, close enough for the side of their fingers to brush. He wants to hold it but he's trying his best not to, afraid to wake her up now that she's finally getting the rest she needs.

"I'm not sleeping."

He hears her voice, low and weak. He quickly looks up only to see her eyes still closed but a small smile is on her face.

"Hey," he whispers. He steps closer and finally takes her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"You didn't have to come." She opens her eyes but then immediately regrets her words when she sees the worry written all over his face.

He chuckles lightly, carefully perching himself on the edge of her bed. "I kinda had to. I'm still your emergency contact." He pauses, looking down at her hand and starts tracing random patterns on the back of her palm. To calm her, he thinks. But maybe it's to calm the both of them. "And I wanted to see you."

"I'm fine." She tries to reassure him, still holding on to his hand.

He hums. "That's not how it sounded when I got the call."

She rolls her eyes, "I'm the doctor. Trust me, I'm fine." She takes a deep breath and then whispers, "I just forgot to eat lunch."

He shakes his head. "They say that doctors are the worst patients." It earns him a weak laugh from her.

"Sleep, Donna. You need to rest." He says with a firm voice, his free hand tucking away a strand of hair from her face. "I'll be here when you wake up."

"Harvey," she warns. "You don't have to stay," she continues but makes no move to let his hand go.

He leans forward and drops a kiss on her forehead, her eyes falling shut from how tender it felt. "But I will."
