This is the final chapter! It's pretty short 'cause I don't really know how to end this hahaha (only that I have a line in my mind that I want to be written here). Thank you to everyone who tuned in to this story. I appreciate all your tweets and reviews. Hope you also get to enjoy this last one :)
"What's for lunch today?" — H
He's been checking up on her regularly. Calling and texting, reminding her to never skip meals again. She's been indulging him by sending photos of her meals, sometimes prepped by her, others delivered to her office.
"Probably same as yours."
She sends him a picture of the burrito that Ray dropped for her just a minute ago, followed by a "Thanks, Harvey. x D"
He's been nothing but sweet and caring the past few days and it's been nice to have someone looking after her. She appreciates the efforts and as much as she would like to return them, maybe by asking him out for coffee or dinner, her schedule the past week just won't allow her. She knows he's busy too, their conversations through text have kept them briefly updated on each other.
And so they haven't really seen each other since the day he stayed over at her house when she got discharged. Until today, when she stepped into the emergency room and there he was sitting on the edge of the hospital bed — his sleeves rolled up and his shirt unbuttoned at the top.
Her office phone rings on her table and she thinks it's one of her colleagues calling for a consultation. Except it's not, it's someone from the ER looking for her and asking her to come down.
"Dr. Paulsen? You're listed as the emergency contact of Harvey Specter. He was brought in a couple of minutes ago. If you could come down to the ER, please."
She's supposed to be used to it, to hearing calls of emergencies and tending to patients in a hurry. But it made her stop when she heard it's someone she knows, someone she cares about.
She quickly stepped out of her office and to the elevators, pressing the button multiple times as if that would make it go faster. The ride down felt even longer, with just her inside the metal box and nothing but silence surrounding her until the doors finally opened and she rushed through the room.
...
"If you wanted to see me again, you know you could've just said so, right?"
She stands in front of him, hands in her front pockets, squeezed tight into fists. She is relieved to see him fine but the worrier in her is still trying to catch up with this reality.
"Thought you wanted some dramatic flair." He jokes, trying to lighten up the mood because he sees how tense she is. She is smiling at him but her eyes well up with tears. He hates to see her like this, especially when he knows it's him who caused it.
"Hey," he whispers softly as he reaches for her, taking her hands out of her pockets and holding onto them. He pulls her closer, making her stand in between his legs.
"Is this how it felt when they called you?"
"Probably."
She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before saying, "I don't want calls like that again."
"For the record, neither do I."
She steps more into his space, giving his hands a squeeze. "I know we're still each other's emergency contacts. And I'm fine with that, if you are." She looks him straight in the eyes. "But can we keep the emergencies away?"
He nods in reply. "Got it. No emergencies, just contacts."
She chuckles but can't help herself from throwing her arms around his shoulders, hugging him tightly. "We were literally just texting a while ago," she murmurs against his ear.
"I know." He whispers into her, his own arms circling her waist. He nuzzles into her neck and takes in her scent that calms him down.
They stay in that moment for a minute or so before she pulls back, squeezing his arms and keeping her hands there while she waits to hear from him. "Okay, tell me what happened."
He takes a deep breath. "Ray picked me up from a client meeting and we were on our way back to the firm." He pauses then drops the news, "Car got rear-ended."
They are happily chatting away in the car. Harvey is munching on his own burrito while asking Ray if he was able to drop off the lunch he ordered for Donna. The driver responds gladly, saying that he got there just in time for the doctor's lunch break. Harvey smiles at him and says his thanks, then suggests that the man should also grab his lunch after he gets dropped off at the firm.
Ray slows down to a stop by the traffic light and is just about to reply when they hear a loud crash and they're both pushed forward in their seats. The car behind them has hit the rear end of their car. The two men immediately check on each other to assure they are both okay.
He adds, "EMTs said we're all fine but they wanted to make sure we also get checked out here."
"Where's Ray now?"
"I'm here, Donna." The curtain around the other bed next to them opens and the trusted driver appears. "All good."
"That's good to hear." Donna looks past Harvey's shoulder and gives Ray a nod. She then turns her attention back to the lawyer sitting in front of her, taking in his face and checking if he is in any pain. "And you?"
The assigned ER doctor suddenly comes in, causing Donna to step out of Harvey's embrace but she stays close to listen. "He's fine, Dr. Paulsen. Nothing to worry about." The doctor turns to Harvey, "You're cleared to go, Mr. Specter. But we highly suggest you take the day to rest. If anything feels different, please come see us immediately."
Harvey nods, "Thank you, Doc. I'll keep that in mind."
The doctor leaves and the two of them are left together again.
"How about you? Can I see you again?" Harvey asks, reaching for Donna's hand once more.
She is shocked, didn't expect this to be the moment where one of them finally makes a move. But then again, it feels like they have been hanging on these feelings for days already so what the hell are they waiting for?
"Yes," she gives him a smile. "But preferably nowhere near this emergency room or this hospital."
They both laugh. "Lunch tomorrow at that shitty Thai place then?"
Of course, he would remember her favorite place. It's his too, even if pretends he doesn't like the food they're serving.
"I'll give you a call if I can squeeze you in."
...
Harvey is walking out of the hospital when his phone rings. The caller ID says Donna. He smiles like a Cheshire cat as he presses the phone against his ear.
"Mr. Specter? I'm calling to confirm your scheduled 1pm lunch plans with Dr. Paulsen tomorrow." He hears her say on the other end of the call. He then replies, "Absolutely. It's already in my calendar."
"Good," she says. "Let me know when you get home, Harvey."
"You're my first call, Donna."
