Later that day, after the goblins had left the castle with their magical bags full of basilisk meat and other body parts, Dumbledore and Amelia sat in his office with the folder open that Amelia had gotten last Saturday on the desk. Dumbledore had used a spell so no one could listen to them while they discussed the contents of it. "Amelia, I must admit that I am surprised that those people came to you with this information at all. As you may have guessed I also had some talks with this organization, but I am not in a position to talk with you about them freely. I will ask if we can talk with each other in the future with and about them, as I am sure you now have a way to contact them?" Dumbledore pointed to the small pin next to her Auror badge on her robes, showing her that he had noticed it as soon as she stepped foot in the castle.
Amelia nodded at the aging wizard on the other side of the desk. "Yes, he gave me this pin that works the same way as my badge it seems. But the main reason I wanted to talk with you Albus, was what we are planning for the next Wizengamot session when Fudge tries to push this motion." Amelia said the minister's name with distaste as she could ot understand how corrupt the man was. Shaking her head she continued, "You know that there are enough families that would vote for it just because they want to be on the minister's good side, so we must discuss how we have something to push back against it." Amelia leaned back in her seat, looking sternly at Dumbledore. Just as he had guessed last weekend; he already had known that something was going on in the Ministry thanks to his position as the Chief Warlock. He had not to be informed about the contents of every topic that would be discussed beforehand, just that someone wanted to bring forth a motion. And this was the reason why she had brought him the folder in the first place, so he could make preparations. But she had not thought that this organization that gave her this information had already talked with Dumbledore before, another point to clear for her curiosity.
Dumbledore had folded his hands on his desk, looking at the woman in front of her. It did not surprise him that ONI had contacted her at all, after all he had advised them to do so after they had the information on what Lucius Malfoy and Fudge were planning. Now they had an ally to work against it.
"I have thought about this motion Madam Bones. What Fudge or Lucius did not think about was that when this information would be public knowledge, the privacy of every customer that Gringotts has would be affected as well. So everyone could ask the goblins what their neighbor has in their vaults and the goblins would have to answer it as there will be no more privacy, in contrast to when the status quo would stay as it is right now. When we bring this point to the Wizengamot, I think the Minister will see the danger that it would be for the future. Also, you could tell the other members that when they would vote for it, according to the law they could be committing line theft by proxy, because they had allowed it to happen. As this falls under your department's purview I would recommend you bring this point up first." Dumbledore saw a small smile in the face from Amelia, glad that she understood what he wanted her to understand.
Amelia thanked him for his advice and time as she grabbed the folder that Dumbledore handed back to her and stood up from her chair. She would have liked to talk with Susan, but she had to return to the Ministry as soon as possible. After asking Dumbledore if she could use his Floo back and receiving a nod, she threw the powder into the fire and left the office.
Dumbledore watched the flames return to their original color, before he asked Cortana if she had recorded everything he and Amelia had just talked about. As a projector was integrated into his desk, he was sure that she had listened to everything and prepared a report for Captain Lasky. After he received her acknowledgement and that she had also contacted John so they could all discuss the development, Dumbledore thanked her and told her to also contact Captain Lasky for this talk, then waited for the knock on the office door. Soon afterwards he heard the awaited knock on the door to his office. After granting entry, he saw John enter the office without his armor equipped, Dumbledore concluded that John was in his office and removed it while Dumbledore was talking with Amelia.
"Well Chief, first thank you for coming here. I wanted to ask you if you are informed that your Intelligence agency had made direct contact with Madam Bones. She had come with information about the motion that Lucius wants to push through, of course we will fight against it with everything we have." Dumbledore stood up from his chair and walked to a window to look outside.
John nodded, confirming that he was informed through Cortana that ONI had begun to take a more direct approach to get their information and making allies in the wizarding community. All for the goal to get all the death eaters that had escaped justice after the war over a decade ago.
"You have to understand Professor, even if we will not interfere in the governments of this world, our mission is to put terrorists to where they belong and protect civilian life since Captain Lasky took command of this operation." John stood at attention as he was used to in front of a higher-ranking officer in the old war between the UNSC and the Covenant. And being the Chief Warlock was almost like being a general by the rules from the UNSC, so John had no problem following his old behavior.
Soon they heard a beeping from the desk, as Cortana announced to have a transmission from the Infinity. Dumbledore nodded towards Cortana, who switched with the image of Captain Lasky who now was ready to talk to the other two men. "Master Chief, Headmaster, pleasure to see you, even if it is via hologram. I guess that the chief and yourself made sure that we will not be overheard by anyone, Headmaster. Now how can I help you?" Captain Lasky's hologram crossed his arms over his chest and looked at the aging wizard with a stern look.
Dumbledore thanked the captain for his time after he had asked Cortana on a short notice to tell Lasky that he wanted to talk with him. "Captain Lasky, am I right in assuming that you had ordered one of your men to talk with Madam Bones about the upcoming motion from the Minister? She was just in my office after she oversaw the rendering of the basilisk, and we talked about our plan to counter it. I wanted to run it by you and ask if you have any suggestions, maybe you see something that we have overlooked. And afterwards I wanted to ask for a favor if you would be willing to listen."
Dumbledore then explained every detail that he and Amelia came up with, showing the captain that those two magicals really had thought about almost every loophole that their counter could entail.
Dumbledore saw a grin forming on the captain's face, as his arms relaxed and were falling from his chest so he could put his hand into his pocket. "It is nice to see that not all from your world are as stupid as some examples would like us to believe. I agree that when you tell the Wizengamot that they would commit line theft by proxy after voting for this motion and what the punishment for it would be after the DMLE would have found out about it, what would be a guarantee when the law would pass, as the DMLE would just have to ask the goblins to find the criminals in the first place. Now if that would be everything needed on this topic, you wanted to ask for a favor?" Lasky was looking at Dumbledore with a founded curiosity for what he would need from them and by proxy the UNSC.
Dumbledore prepared himself to be shot down for his request but he did not see harm in asking. "You see, the main schools on this continent wanted to restart the Triwizard tournament and we are already in discussion for the rules and tasks that the tournament would include, but it is still one and a half years away before we would even begin with it. But for security reasons, I wanted to ask you if you could install more security equipment as well giving me similar glasses like Harry has. This way, I could talk with the Chief and make sure that no harm would come to the students that would not be participating in this tournament." Dumbledore looked at the hologram with a sincerity that would be hard to come by when you would look at him like the political figure he sometimes tries to be.
Lasky looked at Dumbledore thoughtfully. He could understand why Dumbledore wanted access to their network like Harry had, but Lasky would not have the authority to give Dumbledore his own AI to work with if he would ask, so Cortana had to do double duty. Suddenly, Lasky's eyes shot open in shock.
Lasky voiced his thoughts as he started to realize what the real issue was. "You think that Voldemort would hear about the tournament; that he would try to make it happen that Harry would have to compete? That at least is what I read between the lines that you have said. Why else would you like to have access to our network after Harry has become a Witcher and can watch after himself."
Lasky was now thinking about what Doctor Halsey had proposed, to make sure that this world would be safe from any kind of danger after they would have to leave for good when the UEG would see that this mission would be over. Maybe making the GUNGNIR variant from the MJOLNIR Gen 3 armor platform to its own whole armor set would not be a waste of time after all. But that would also mean putting Harry through the same procedures as the Spartan II had to endure when they had been his age. Could he really allow that to happen again to a child? No, he really would need confirmation that Riddle was on the rise again before he would green light these augmentations to another child before it would know what that would mean.
Dumbledore once again was surprised at how much Lasky could find out just by listening and combining the information he has to a whole picture. "As expected, you understood the bigger picture, Captain Lasky. Yes, I am afraid that Tom Riddle will find a way to make it happen that Harry has to compete in potentially deadly tasks during the tournament, whatever we would decide to make sure that no underage wizard even would be considered by the judge who would decide the champions for the three competing schools. But as I said, this is still just over one and a half years away from happening, so if you want to discuss this on a more personal level, you would be free to visit me over the summer break so we could plan for any eventuality." Dumbledore held his hand towards the hologram in an inviting manner, almost forgetting that Lasky could not grab it physically.
Lasky agreed with Dumbledore's suggestion and said that he would contact him when he had time to come down to the planet to meet him. When Lasky closed the connection, he stood up from his desk on the Infinity and walked to the section where ONI was placed. He stepped into the maglev train that moved inside the vast ship when he saw that the agent, Mr. Smith, was already waiting for him. Lasky rolled his eyes as he approached the agent. "Is ONI still so paranoid to listen to my transmissions or why are you already here?" Lasky grinned a bit when he saw Smith also grinning widely.
"We do not Captain, at least not with our commanding officer on this mission. But thinking ahead, it was obvious that Madam Bones would meet with Chief Warlock Dumbledore about the information we had given her. We just anticipated that would also lead to the point where Dumbledore would contact you and ask for permission to talk with her about us was the next logical step. We see no downsides to allow this, so that would be no problem as long as Dumbledore keeps silent that we are here in space." Smith looked at the captain while shrugging his shoulders. It was almost common knowledge that ONI mostly did things in absolute secrecy, but since this detachment from the intelligence service arrived in this world, they were open to their captain and commanding officer, as working against him would not be beneficial.
Lasky listened intently, agreeing with the best agent they had on this mission right now. Remembering why he wanted to talk with ONI, he asked Smith if he could investigate the Triwizard Tournament and its history, they would need to plan for the event that Harry Potter would be forced to compete.
"And if that would really happen, we need contingency plans to make sure that he will be protected. I will talk with Doctor Halsey about the preparation for Harry's augmentations and the plans for his armor, but only if she finally had her breakthrough to unite the procedures from every Spartan generation until now." Lasky saw the hidden surprise on the ONI agent's face, as he had just suggested making Harry into a Spartan.
After Mr. Smith had worked through his surprise, he asked the captain if he really was sure for this course of action. "With all due respect for you Captain Lasky, but in my opinion it would be sufficient to allow our Spartan IV to hunt down all the Death Eaters and this way Riddle would have to show himself to see what is happening. Do we really have to steal the childhood from Mr. Potter just to make sure that we get Riddle in the end? Granted he is already a Witcher and adding Spartan augmentation would likely see him outclassing Spartan II in physical abilities." Smith saw the understanding in the captain's face, but he was assured that Lasky did not make this decision lightly.
Lasky explained his thought process for leaving Harry as someone like a hero for the people of this planet. "Also it would be good if you watch Barty Crouch and Ludo Bagman, as I got the impression from Dumbledore that those two heads of their departments are mostly involved in discussing the Triwizard Tournament with the other two European schools."
Lasky then told Smith to continue with his work and left the train at his next stop. Coincidentally, it was the viewing platform where he could see the back of the moon where they were still hiding. On another display he saw the feed from one of their satellites looking at Earth itself. If he did not know that they were in another dimension of something like that, he would think they had traveled back in time as this Earth was almost a carbon copy of theirs. Thinking about the future, he would talk with Doctor Halsey as soon as he could about the next step in the augmentation of Harry Potter. That this could also be seen as a step to take over this planet, he would have to plan this carefully.
Back on the planet, Amelia sat in her office in the Ministry with the report from Kingsley after he had brought the goblins back to Gringotts. She was glad that all worked out without a hitch, as the goblins had told him that no one had seen them enter the bank. The goblins now would process the meat and contact the one who hired them for the next step, so Kingsley would not be needed anymore. Putting the report in her drawer that would only open for her, she thought back on the meeting last Saturday and what name was dropped back then.
Amelia sat back and muttered to herself, "Geralt of Rivia, where did I hear that name before? Somehow, I feel like I should know him, but I can't put a face to his name at all. And where is this Kear Mohen? Ohh, how I hate it that I don't have all the information's needed." Burying her face in her hands, she tried to remember who this man was. She then heard a knock on her door and pulled herself back together and told the visitor to enter.
When the door opened, she saw that it was Amos Diggory, the head of the department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. He had a worried look on his face, and she knew almost immediately what he wanted to ask her. "Hello Amelia, please excuse my intrusion. I would like to know if you could spare one of your Aurors for the next week or so. We have received some worrying reports about a pack of werewolves that do not want to follow our laws and they are attacking children from magical as well as muggle families." Amos had to stop himself as Amelia almost fumed out of anger.
Based on her reaction, he assumed that she was not informed about what happened the last few days. He knew that the Auror force was thinned out almost too much to function, but his department was not much better off. That was one of the reasons why he thought to ask Amelia for help in this matter, as the Aurors would be much better suited should it come to a fight. He even wanted to suggest in the next budget session that those two departments be put together for the future to make better use of the budget.
Amelia was looking through the last few days worth of reports if there was any mention of any kind of werewolf attacks, but she found nothing. So even her Aurors did not know about this. "Amos, who reported these attacks? I never received anything about this, and as far as I know the procedure is that I should be told immediately when there is an attack from an intelligent being, especially if breach of the statute of secrecy is involved, so we could investigate it. And as there were even muggle children attacked; we need to find out quickly who it was and explain to the parents what now had to happen. The last thing I want is to remove their children and modify the memories of the parents, and for that we need some mind healers either way. Now please tell me the family names so I can dispatch some people to do their work." Amelia frowned as something didn't add up. "Amos, you said magical children were attacked. In January? Are you telling me that this pack was so brazen as to break into their homes?"
Amos winced as he neglected to mention that fact. "Based on the report, that is what happened, yes."
Amelia stared at the man hard. as she tried to think of why a werewolf would draw such attention until it dawned on her who could be so bold to attempt this. "Greyback is back, this was his calling card back in the 60's and 70's. If this is indeed Greybak's pack then we're going to need help for this. Let's first investigate the families and work our way down from there."
Amos' eyebrow rose in surprise. "What, you want to hire a Witcher? You know how Fudge is about them. He'll tell us to do our jobs instead of paying more gold to them" Amos was more worried about keeping his job if he brought this idea up and Umbridge got wind of it.
Amelia rolled her eyes. shook her head. "If the Prophet gets wind of this that Greyback is back in the country and attacking magical children to expand his pack, do you think Fudge will sacrifice his popularity or suffer causing a panic? We don't have the manpower to hunt down Greyback, assuming it is him. Either way we need help, Amos."
Amos sighed knowing she had a point. Greyback has remained at large and wanted for over 30 years because the Ministry was too stubborn to hire a professional hunter like a Witcher.
Amelia was now walking around her desk to leave her office and order one of her Aurors to leave immediately.
Amos looked after Amelia and told her the family name, hoping that it would not be too late. After this matter was taken care of, Amelia returned to her office, hoping that it would be enough. Looking at the picture frame on her desk, where she was with her niece on one of her rare holidays in another country. Seeing her mirrored face in the glass, she wished that all these problems would not be happening right now, even if her niece was safe in Hogwarts. She then noticed the small pin she was still wearing from the man in the muggle café. Sudden realization that she could use them dawned on her, and she placed a privacy charm on her door before pressing her thumb on it. She could feel it vibrating on her robe, before she heard a voice from it.
"Madam Bones, you called earlier than we had expected. Has something happened?"
It was a voice she did not recognize, even the man in the café had sounded differently. This voice sounded more feminine, so maybe someone from this organization had given her the information.
"Excuse me for calling you, but I wanted to know if you are aware that there had been multiple werewolf attacks in the last few days? If this is the case, would it be possible to send someone to protect those families from another one while we hunt them down? Just in case." Amelia really hoped that this would not backfire on her later in her life, so she breathed a sigh of relief as the voice acknowledged this request and asked for the names and addresses. She would soon send some agents to these locations to look after those victims.
After Madam Bones had thanked her, Mrs. Smith disconnected the call with her neural interface. It was almost the best ONI had, coupled with a dumb AI she could deliver messages to her superior just by thinking about it. It had now proven to be an important tool in her work to spy on the Ministry and working together with the DMLE, so she wrote a report in her mind to be sent to the Infinity. She also suggested making sure that there would be at least two agents per assignment, one ONI agent and one Spartan IV. But this decision would be up to her command. In her mind she then pulled the files on all the known werewolves and analyzed them, only to see that there could only be one werewolf that would have no scruple using these attacks to get his point across or having what he wanted. "Fenrir Greyback. Maybe we need to take you out sooner than we had thought. She murmured to herself with a grim smile.
Somewhere else on the planet, Spartan-B312, also known as Noble-Six, was looking at some tracks left on the ground from the target he was tasked to watch. It was just a small ranking Death Eater, but that one still could have some information about the organization and would not be missed when he just disappear.
"Micheal, we just received new orders from ONI. It seems some targets were moved from the watch list to the hit list. They're ordering you to stop what you are doing now and remove the target from the equation. Name of the target: Fenrir Greyback, Werewolf. Catching him alive would be preferable for questioning, but ONI would count it a success if he just stopped attacking people." Dot reported the change of orders.
Micheal looked at his helmet's HUD to look at his AI, Auntie Dot.
"Understood, let's hunt a werewolf then. Contact Geralt, we will need his help" Micheal stood up to his full height and turned around while calling his Pelican to pick him up. He would need to stop by Kear Morhen to pick up specialized bullets to put down werewolves.
