Jaypaw heard Firestar call the clan together for a meeting and stumbled into the clearing. Trees loomed over him, and the warm, new-leaf breeze rustled his fur.
"As you all know," Firestar began, ominously, "twolegs are starting to come into the forest with large monsters. I'm afraid they might destroy the territories around the lake."
Shocked whispers and terrified gasps arose from the crowd of cats before the leader. Their tails were swishing violently, and Molekit bounced around outside the nursery whilst his mother tried to herd him back to the safety of their nest.
"I have had a message from Starclan. They led me to a shiny, swirly, white thing. They said that 5 apprentices would be sent through the 'thing' and would save the clans. Now, apprentices, any volunteers?" Firestar reported, looing expectantly at the apprentices, as if he could convince them that easily.
'It obviously doesn't mean me.' Jaypaw thought, 'I'm blind!'
Nobody stepped forward. It was silent. Firestar waited. Still, nobody. Jaypaw realised that he might as well go. It was then that Firestar said something that would change his mind completely, "Oh, I think they also mentioned that if you have any disabilities, you will lose them if you become a twoleg."Jaypaw stepped forward, nervously, as he heard Briarpaw dragging herself over aswell. Hollypaw came to join them, who then presumably glanced at Lionpaw, but he shook his head. Cinderpaw waddled over, closely followed by her sister, Poppypaw.
"Just like that, we have our five." Firestar remarked.
They wandered deep into the forest, following Firestar. Cinderpaw waited for Jaypaw and Briarpaw to catch up.
"Do you need help? I mean your eyes, and your legs." She asked, her head cocked.
"I'm fine thanks!" Jaypaw snapped, but Briarpaw nodded her head.
Cinderpaw scooped her onto her back and hurried off to Firestar.
A giant, swirly, white circle lay before the apprentices' eyes as they gaped in awe (except Jaypaw).
Briarpaw meowed, "Oh, Jaypaw, I wish you could see this!"
"Well, tough, I can't. Waste your wishes on someone else!" Jaypaw spat back, suddenly regretting his words when he heard Briarpaw shift away from him.
Firestar carefully told them what they had to do. Then he left them in the forest. On their own.
Jaypaw heard nervous whispers ripple through the apprentices like waves slamming the shore. Until Hollypaw spoke up, "We go in the order we volunteered in. First Jaypaw, Then Briarpaw, and me, and Cinderpaw and Poppypaw."
Everyone nodded in agreement. They all lined up, and Jaypaw stepped forward, cautiously. He Held his breath and stepped into a swirl of white like snow on a Leaf-bare day.
