"Man, I'm so beat! I feel like we've been doing even more work since we got back from our internships," Matoi groaned.
"It's not that bad, Ryuko," Midoriya tried to cheer her up, though she only scoffed.
"Easy for you to say. We've got those exams coming up later next month and I can still barely keep up," she grumbled.
"I hear you on that, Matoi," Jirou sighed as they waited for Present Mic to show up for English class. "No rest for the weary."
"You can say that again," Kaminari groaned as Ashido entered the classroom.
"Dang! Everyone doing okay?" Ashido asked, getting shrugs back in response.
"Just feels like a lot's been happening, ya know?" Kaminari said.
As the rest of the students filtered in, Mr. Aizawa showed up with a letter in hand.
"Ashido, looks like you have some mail."
The pinkette perked up slightly, as she took the letter from her homeroom teacher's hand.
"What is it? Do you know?" Uraraka asked.
"Nope!" She replied. "But we're about to find out!"
Opening the envelope, a letter was enclosed and neatly folded in three. Carefully undoing the folds, Ashido started to read it over as a few silent moments passed.
"OH MY GOD!"
"What is it?" Iida whipped his head around at the sudden commotion, with the others turning their attention to the right side of the room.
"ICHIRO TANAKA IS INVITING US TO A PARTY OVER IN TOKYO BAY! NOT JUST THE GIRLS, BUT THE WHOLE CLASS!" Ashido squealed. "It's gonna be a fancy party, too! The only weird thing is that it's taking place near… Honnōji Academy?"
"What did you say?!" Ryuko nearly stood from her chair as she heard that last line. "Honnōji Academy?"
"Uh… yeah," Mina responded blankly. "Is that a problem? I can read the letter off."
Ryuko quickly bit her tongue and nodded. This was gonna get awkward if she had to talk.
"To Mina Ashido,
Thank you again to you and the girls for coming out for the fashion show! It was a great time and I'm glad you all were there.
As promised, I found a way to compensate for the lost time during our meet up in Tokyo. There's going to be a ball and gala in the area near Honnōji Academy in Tokyo Bay. I'm inviting you and the rest of your class to come and enjoy! The catered food is supposed to be top-notch and there will be music and entertainment as well.
The event will be Friday, June 3. I've attached a number to give to UA's principal to help with RSVP arrangements.
I hope to see everyone there! I can't wait!
Kind regards,
Ichiro Tanaka"
Everyone was shocked and most of the students were excited. Though Iida, Uraraka, Matoi and Midoriya were somewhat apprehensive.
'Out of all places, how come it's near Honnōji? Tokyo's a big place,' Izuku thought as he had a grimace on his face.
This whole thing felt fishy to him, which spiraled into a bunch of conspiracies in his head. It could be an ambush on Ryuko, or maybe even Inumuta trying to coax him into joining. There was a lot to worry about when it came to that school. But there was the chance to see Mako again since she lived in Honnō city.
Maybe this would be something he'd discuss with Ryuko, just so he could anticipate whatever may come.
"Next Friday?! Why can't it be this Friday?!" Hagakure nearly had a temper tantrum by banging her fists on her desk.
"Is it really that big a deal?" Ojiro tilted his head.
"Of course it is! The Ichiro Tanaka will be there! -gasp- I just might have a chance to dance with him!" Hagakure's voice slowly turned into a squeal upon that realization.
"Ichiro Tanaka? Bleh! You mean that rich pretty boy that acts all happy-go-lucky?" Sero rolled his eyes.
"What's that supposed to mean?! You don't know him!" Mina puffed and crossed her arms. "FYI, we've actually had the pleasure of meeting him in person! And he's a sweet and honest guy!"
"You sure that's not just him trying to put on a face for a party full of girls?" Kaminari snickered at how Mina was simping for Tanaka.
"Yeah. All these rich guys always use what they can to get the girls. While real guys like us are left in the dust," Mineta boldly claimed.
"Maybe it's because guys like you have no charm other than being a lame, comedic, pervy character," Jirou said with a chuckle.
"HEY! I HAVE GOOD QUALITIES IF YOU'D JUST GIVE ME A CHANCE!" The purplette cried out with tears.
"Speaking of dance…" Ashido dashed around the classroom, grabbing Uraraka by the shoulder and bringing her to Matoi before wrapping an arm around her.
"Girls night tomorrow! We're going shopping for the best dresses~! No guys allowed! Think of it as a surprise~" The pinkette winked with a teasing smile.
The thought of these girls being glamoured up drew reactions out of almost all the guys in the room. Many were blushing while Mineta and Kaminari nearly drooled before both received the Grape Treatment™ from Jirou.
Even Izuku couldn't help but imagine what he might see that night. Just thinking about what Ryuko could look like in a dress… And Ochako too?
'Damn it! Cease these thoughts!' Izuku palmed both sides of his face to avoid dwelling into any ground that Mineta tread through. The sound of it startled the three girls beside him.
"Sheesh! Anyway, girls! We meet tomorrow night at UA again. Just like last time!" Mina shouted before letting Ochako go, but still held onto Ryuko.
"Umm, Ashido? You can let-"
She stopped once she saw the horrific sight of Mina with pure black eyes staring at her.
"Your phone number. Give it to me. The others get to have the cool gal's phone number, but not me? That doesn't seem fair, huh?" Mina said with a low voice.
"Cool gal? Oh right, I remember you saying that when you wanted me to get her phone number," Izuku struggled to keep himself from snickering.
Seeing the carefree Ashido get so worked up was pretty funny. Even Ryuko could hear Senketsu snickering at the sight.
"And whose fault is it that I haven't gotten it until now?" Ashido stomped towards Midoriya.
"U-Um, Ashido?" the greenette took a step back cautiously.
Ashido wanted to get up in Midoriya's face about it but found that she couldn't move any further. She tried to pull but couldn't budge. The pinkette turned back and saw that Matoi was now holding her arm.
"Alright, alright. Don't get so uptight about it," Matoi chuckled before loosening her grip. "Get your phone out."
The dangerous aura Mina had begun to dissipate as her lifelong goal was finally fulfilled.
"Are you finished yet? I've been very generous in not disciplining anyone this morning because I'm in a good mood," Mr. Aizawa cut in with his hair standing on end.
Everyone promptly scrambled for their seats so class could start without being caught in their teacher's bindings.
..~~~HLK~~~..
A few hours later, 1-A's classes ended for the day. This left four students who remained behind as Iida and Uraraka went to take their leave.
"Are you two coming?" Uraraka called over to the pair.
Midoriya stood up immediately, being more than ready for the trip to the trains with them. But Matoi stayed in her seat, looking rather zoned out. Seeing her be so silent was unusual, downright eerie. It was starting to worry the Uraraka and Iida.
"Matoi?" Iida spoke to try and get her attention.
"Y-Yeah. We'll be there in a sec!" Midoriya answered quickly, seeing that something was clearly wrong with Matoi.
Tenya and Ochako were skeptical, but they decided it was best to take their leave and wait outside. To give distance from themselves and the classroom, they waited by the stairway. Whatever was going on with Matoi, he could tell by the look on her face that it was something rather difficult.
With the other two seemingly gone, It was just the two childhood friends.
"Ryuko?"
The girl was suddenly shaken from her stupor, looking back to see Izuku standing a few feet away.
"Ummm…"
"Are you going to be okay?" Izuku gently whispered.
"..."
Midoriya chuckled and moved closer.
"I'm here for you, okay?" He said with a soft smile, pulling her into a quick hug for a few seconds before separating. Matoi's heart started to beat faster and faster as she stammered the longer she stared into his emerald green irises.
"Do you want to talk about it now? If not, we can wait until we get back to Danchi. Or even until tomorrow. However long you need."
Ryuko wanted to wait, but she knew what waiting was going to do. Whatever she was feeling, she wanted to confront it. She shook her head to rechamber herself.
"Y-Yeah, but not yet," she quickly said.
Izuku didn't need to hear anything else to be satisfied with that answer. Ryuko took a few more seconds to breathe before getting up and walking out with him. They soon joined up with their friends at the stairwell.
"Hey guys. Sorry for the hold up," Ryuko apologized earnestly.
"It's no trouble, Matoi. Are you feeling any better?" Tenya asked.
"Yeah. I was just a bit bummed out about going back to Honnō. Just when I was starting to get comfortable here with you guys," she chuckled.
"Are you sure? Pardon me for prying, but you seem a lot more relaxed than earlier."
"Last week was a helluva emotional roller coaster for all of us. The last thing we need is another one," Ryuko shrugged while waving her hand side to side. "Plus, I didn't want to drive my rain over your parade."
"Hmm? What do you mean?" Tenya tilted his head.
"She's talking about your big speech back in class," Ochako whispered.
"'I promise! I will strive to be the perfect hero!'" Ryuko quoted him proudly while pointing her entire hand out in front.
Tenya's face lightly turned red out of embarrassment. Today was such a blur that he didn't even remember.
"Oh yeah! Man, you looked so cool, Iida!" Izuku cheered him on.
"D-Did I really say that? Geez. I didn't mean to make such a presence," he shook his head, becoming self-aware for the first time.
"No! No! You're fine, dude. This is the Iida we all know and love," Ryuko laughed and patted his back. "It means that you're making a speedy recovery."
"Well, I only have you all to thank for that. I was in a dark place, but you all helped set me straight," Tenya smiled at his friends.
"Of course, Iida! That's what friends are for! We'll always be there for you," Ochako beamed while hopping in place.
"We're proud of you, Iida. It takes a lot to overcome that kind of trauma, but you pulled through. And you're stronger now because of it," Izuku said earnestly.
Tenya grinned, feeling warmth from the support that his friends were giving him. His now relaxed hands soon stiffened as his arms were now parallel to his body.
"In that case… I WILL CONTINUE TO GROW FROM HERE ON OUT!"
Tenya raised his hands as well as his voice. There was nowhere to go but up.
"YEAH!" the other three cheered him on while shooting their fists into the air.
After a few seconds, they simmered down and exchanged laughs as they continued on home.
..~~~HLK~~~..
-The next day, late afternoon-
"Ashido, I can do just fine coming to UA on my own. I still can't believe you asked Uraraka for the address to come and get me," Ryuko rolled her eyes as she and the Pinkette walked down the street.
"What, and miss the chance to hang out with the cool gal? NO CHANCE!" Mina proclaimed proudly with an iron fist in the air. "I'm not gonna let Midoriya have you all to himself on the way over!"
"Could you give it a rest with that name? And what? Do you have a problem with him and I walking together?" Ryuko rolled her eyes with a chuckle.
"Hmph! Dummy!" Mina pouted and looked away. "Thanks to you, I won't be able to eat dinner with the girls tonight!"
"Hey, you were the one who chose to eat with the Midoriyas," Ryuko said.
"How was I supposed to resist that godly scent?" Mina whined and felt her stomach.
It was true, Mina had supper with Ryuko and the Midoriyas when she visited. Well, more like floating in while following the scent. It was very strange for Mina to drop into the foreign land that was Midoriya's apartment. And it was also a bit strange for Inko to meet yet another new face in her home.
But Izuku and Ryuko vouched that she was their classmate who was picking the Kamui wielder up. And Inko didn't mind having more visitors. It just gave her hope that Izuku was making more friends.
"We'll just settle for a light snack, alright? You really need to settle down, Ashido," Ryuko sighed.
Mina nodded silently in response. It wasn't much longer before they met up with the rest of the girls at the front gate of UA.
"Hellooo~! Glad to see you're all here~!" Mina melodiously called out.
"Glad to see that you're still hung up on not being the first to hang with Matoi," Kyouka laughed.
"SHADDUP!" Mina shouted, not wanting to take another jab from the earlobe girl.
"Hey Matoi!" Ochako beamed and hopped over to greet her friend.
"Hey Uraraka!"
Out of instinct, Ryuko opened her arms for a hug until she realized who she was offering it to. She quickly pulled her hands behind her back.
"Oh! Umm, sorry! Force of habit!"
"From hugging a certain green bean a lot?" Hagakure asked with wide eyes that nobody saw.
"H-Hey! If you had to know, Mako's like that too!" Ryuko quickly tried to divert the convo.
"Mhmmm…" Hagakure cooed with a tease.
Ochako stood there with a rather blank look on her face while Ryuko was being teased. She pressed her hands into her chest as it started to churn. What was going on? Matoi offered her a hug and now she was spacing out!
"Hmph!" Uraraka spread her arms out wide like a peacock, which startled Matoi.
"Uhh… Uraraka-"
"Bring'er here!" she shouted proudly before attacking her with the wings of friendship.
"Ah! Hey! Careful! I'm gonna fall!" Matoi strained to the laughing brunette.
Eventually, she relented and slipped her arms out to return the embrace. Matoi was still getting used to the feeling, but it felt nice.
"Alright! We all ready to go?" Mina called out.
All of the girls either nodded or announced that they were ready. With that, everyone began taking a stroll towards downtown.
..~~~HLK~~~..
The high-rise buildings and bustling streets were plastered with bright ads and video boards on glass-exterior structures. The streetlamps bathed the sidewalks in fluorescent light, as the group continued to move through with the masses.
"So where are we headed to again?" Matoi asked.
"We're off to get some pizzaz for the upcoming Tanaka ball party!" Hagakure cheered.
The Kamui wielder remained silent, as she had no clue what she said.
"She means we're getting dresses," Yaoyorozu translated for Matoi.
"Getting? Like shopping?" she asked. "But wait, couldn't Yaomomo just make clothes for us so that we can save money?"
"Huh… That is a good question actually!" Uraraka wondered as well.
The front banged girl winced when she was confronted with that observation. Her hands started to get fidgety as she tried to come up with an excuse.
"W-Well, technically yes! But that'd be against the rules! The economy would collapse if I started making everything!"
"So, you just wanted to go shopping, huh?" Asui said rather bluntly, which shot Yaomomo into a downward spiral.
"Hey now! There's nothing wrong with that when you're doing it with a bunch of gal pals!" Ashido interjected while wrapping her arm around Asui.
"Is there a way that we can keep a budget while doing it?" Uraraka pleaded.
"Don't worry, Uraraka! Just leave it to us!" Ashido and Hagakure said with a big thumbs up.
"She says that while we're in the busiest area of the city. There's no telling how expensive these may be," Senketsu noted, which made Ryuko swallow hard. She already spent her money on a previous shopping endeavor as they stepped into Ōkina Midori no Ito.
Upon entry, everyone took in the bedazzling scene in front of them that spread throughout the entire store. It was almost blinding to some, while others only stared in awe at what they saw. The lights dazzled in crystalic form, with chandeliers and railings laced with gold-like material, and some pure gold. The marble floors were cut into diamond shaped tiles that glistened.
Looking around the area, there were so many dresses, accessories, and all kinds of fancy items were available to be purchased. There was so much they could choose from!
"It's so pretty here!" Mina gushed while squishing her face.
"It's like we stepped into shopping heaven!" Toru added with delight.
"Mhm, it's as lovely as the last time I was here," Momo said calmly, which raised questions from a few.
"You've been here before? For what? A wedding? This place looks crazy expensive!" Ryuko nearly panicked as she got glimpses of multiple price tags that ranged from 70,000 yen to 573,000.
"Maybe we should go shopping somewhere else…" Ochako said with fear. She was intimidated by how pricy everything looked as well.
"Absolutely not! Tanaka will be at the ball! As the only class that he invited, we have to put on our best looks!" Mina shut down the idea of going to a cheaper place.
"If it's too much, I can spot you if you need it. It's no problem," Momo said to tender the situation.
'NO PROBLEM?! Is this girl loaded or something?!' Both Ryuko and Ochako's eyes bulged at the nonchalant attitude Momo exhibited.
"You say it's not a problem, Yaomomo. Don't tell me you have a pile of money lying around?" Jirou scoffed with a smirk.
Yaoyorozu could only stammer as she started to blush slightly and tap her pointer fingers together.
'I didn't want people finding out like this,' the class deputy fretted silently.
"Oh my god. She is loaded," Jirou and Ashido deadpanned.
"Even if Momo's loaded, I think we should just get on with shopping. We don't want to be out too late now," Asui cut in, putting a stop to this circle of onlookers.
"Yeah, let's stop pestering Yaomomo and just get to shopping," Matoi agreed and stepped behind Ashido and gave her a push. "Lead the way, Pinky."
For the rest of the evening, the girls walked all around, picking out dresses they found best suited them. They made sure to go with one girl at a time, so that each person would look their best. Ryuko had to admit, this was a lot of fun.
Getting in touch with her creative senses when she was trying to think of what meshed well with her friends was a blast. It also helped her learn more about each of the girls. This was the most social that she had ever been. Ryuko did feel bad that Izuku wasn't here to experience it.
Last, but not least, it was Ryuko's turn to walk down the runway. The girls sat her down on a bench and surrounded her with analytical eyes.
"What are we thinking, girls?" Mina asked.
"Don't know. She's a lot harder to nail down. Ryuko has the whole tomboy vibe going on, maybe something like what we did for Jirou?" Toru tilted her head.
"Naaah, I don't think it'd work," Mina spoke up right away.
"What, something wrong with my style?" Kyouka asked in a half-offended tone.
"Matoi does have the capabilities of taking on a more elegant look. Maybe something more delicate," Momo added.
"Sheesh, thanks guys," Kyouka huffed and rolled her eyes.
"Ryuko's got nice hair. I think we should go with Momo's idea," Tsu decided.
"You're right! It's so soft!" Toru stroked some of Ryuko's locks before the girl gently pushed her hand away.
"Geez, you all got it down when picking out your dresses. What's all this fuss over me?" Ryuko chuckled.
"Well, you want to look good for Midoriya when you see him at the ball, right?" Toru said with a raised brow and a smile, which made Ryuko nearly fall off the bench.
"H-Huh?! What's this got to do with him?!" her face flushed bright red as she regained her balance.
"C'mon Matoiii! We all know you're totally gonna dance with him at the ball!" Mina let out a cheeky giggle.
"I agree, you both would look lovely together!" Momo couldn't contain the sparks in her eyes.
"Don't encourage them!" Ryuko waved her hands in front of Momo, pleading for her to stop.
"You two are practically joined to the hip. Who else are you gonna dance with?" Tsuyu tapped her chin.
"Dance? Who said anything about dancing?"
"Dude. It's a ball," Kyouka chuckled.
"Whatever! Don't make it seem like everything is about Izuku!" Ryuko crossed her arms and looked away.
"He's the only boy you hang out with. Who else could be the one? Mineta?" Kyouka teased.
"HELL. NO."
While Ryuko tried to escape this by the skin of her teeth, Ochako could only sit and listen in on everything. There was so much attention on Ryuko and Izuku.
Ochako's body started to act up again. Her fingers began to shake, feeling weak in the muscles. She couldn't even form a fist without her hand feeling all weird and ticklish. This agitation spread to her core, which kept her from being able to focus on the conversation any further.
All the sound was being drowned out by a white noise. Her lip started to quiver as she struggled to keep herself together.
"...Ochako?"
"Ochako?"
"Huh!" The brunette straightened herself up immediately once she was snapped back to reality. Ochako turned to see that everyone had their eyes on her, all donning a confused or worried look.
"You okay, Uraraka?" Ryuko asked and scooted over to her.
"Y-Yeah! I'm fine! Just spaced out for a moment. What's up?" she quickly covered up.
"We were asking what you thought would fit dear ol' Matoi here. Fancy or Tomboy-ish?," Mina cheekily pointed towards Ryuko by laying her hand out.
"It'd be easier if we knew what a certain special someone's tastes were, but she for some reason doesn't have a clue."
"Shut up," Ryuko snarled embarrassedly.
Ochako tucked her hands towards her body, letting them rest on her thighs while looking down. She was feeling that nastiness again. But she pushed it down, not wanting to let it ruin the night with her friends. Her hands tightened up and she looked at them with a friendly expression before saying her words.
"I think she should be the one to choose what she likes. If the person really is special, they'll appreciate whatever she wears."
The girls were all silent for a moment, as they weren't expecting such a response that hit pretty deep.
"Damn. I can't argue with that," Kyouka shrugged.
"That's romantic!" Momo covered her face so that they couldn't see her gush over it.
"Yeah… You're right, Uraraka! We're here to look good and steal the show from the boys after what they did at the Sports Festival! We can't just cater to what some "special" person wants!" Toru launched her invisible fist up, her bracelet and sleeve being the only indicators of her doing this.
"Aren't we here because you both wanted to impress Tanaka?" Tsu asked.
"Then it's settled! Let's just grab whatever we think works for Matoi and she can pick!" Mina chimed back in.
Ryuko was still trying to wrap her head around what Ochako said. It was quite vague and left even more questions. But, if it got the girls off her case about Izuku, she wasn't going to complain.
"Let's go!" Momo called out before they split up, leaving Ochako and Ryuko sitting together.
"Finally. I didn't think they'd ever stop," Ryuko exhaled while wiping her forehead.
"By the way, Uraraka. What did you mean by-"
"I'd better get going, too. I want to at least pitch in!" Ochako said and quickly walked away to another area of the store.
"...Oh, alright! Thanks!"
Ryuko drummed her legs with her hands for a few moments, letting everything process.
"What was that all about?" Senketsu asked curiously.
"Your guess is as good as mine," Ryuko pulled out her phone and decided to get comfortable because she was about to go through a whole fashion show.
After about an hour and a half of changing clothes, listening to feedback, and messing with some of her features, the night was finally coming to a close. Each of the girls left the store with bags in their hands, thanks to Yaoyorozu covering the brunt of the funds.
Ryuko was able to settle for something that she really liked. She could only hope that the same feeling she had would reflect on the others.
And maybe…
She felt her cheeks burn a mild red before she shook off that thought. It was a long night, and the idea of hopping into bed was suddenly very welcoming.
The girls shortly went their separate ways afterwards, since they all lived in different prefectures. Ochako sat alone on the train, thinking over everything while looking into her bag. She was quite stirred up today, and it bothered her greatly.
She spent the rest of the ride trying to figure out what it was.
..~~~HLK~~~..
-8:55 p.m. Uraraka's Apartment-
As Ochako walked into her apartment, quickly closing the entrance door and locking it, she silently shuffled to her room and gently sat on the bedside.
There was a sliver of moonlight illuminating her back in a thin strip, as she could only continue to think back.
'Maybe…'
It wasn't terribly late, so she decided to open her flip phone. Scrolling down in her contacts list, Ochako selected the name she was looking for.
To Be Continued…
Buckichamp A/N: Hey everyone, sorry this chapter was delayed by a day!
We've had a ton of personal shit coming up and some other things on our end that pushed things back. We weren't sure if we'd have to delay until next week, but fortunately that didn't happen.
With this chapter, we've kicked off the new arc with a little bit of original content! I dunno exactly what I'd call this arc yet, but it's taking place in the gap between the first MHA movie and before the Midterm Exams before summer vacation (so there's your answer for those who wanted to know what our substitute was for Two Heroes). This arc will be a heckuva lot of fun!
There's also another note here to pass along:
This arc is going to have a lot of important developments and we really want to take the time to make sure we have everything nailed down right. It's going to have a big impact on the remainder of the series. We can't afford to rush this, since we're going to make some big (and small) changes to some of our already pre-written draft chapters.
We also need a proper goddamn break before we tackle this and do what we need to do, so here's the plan: Chapter 40 will be released on Thurs, April 13, 2023 and Chapter 41 will go live on May 4 before we take our hiatus.
We'll be taking a five week break and publish Chapter 42 on Thurs, June 8, 2023 (we have some content for the YouT–ube that needs to finish up along with this fanfic, and we can't neglect it any longer).
And oh my god we nearly forgot to address this review:
Q: "Um, during the last chapter you said that one of Nomu's arms were cleaved at the shoulder. But then you had it able to grab both Izuku and Ryuko, and now when it's regrowing it's limbs you only mentioned how it lost one arm instead of both. In the last chapter did Ryuko actually cleave an arm off at the shoulder, or did she just scratch the thing? I did think it was odd how no one seemed angry or amazed or shocked that the thing had lost an arm but kept fighting like nothing had been done to it at all while utilizing it's remaining limbs. Or even disturbed if the Nomu decided to regrow it's arm shortly after it had been severed.
Anywho, other than pointing that out to you Author-san, I'd like to say that I like your story. It's written quite nicely so far."
-Wondla Master
Buckichamp: This is referencing back in Chapter 12. We fucked up with the word choice and it was due to your review that we will (hopefully and eventually) fix it.
We didn't have Ryuko cleave through the Nomu (or that's what we intended, but chose the words poorly). Rather, it was more supposed to be that she landed a hit with the blade but it didn't cut through much at all in that moment before the fatigue and vertigo set in, knocking away the blade as it grabbed onto her wrist.
No one ever pointed out the mistake and we let it be without realizing it. We actually have to thank you for pointing it out so we could set the record straight.
